I add yellow split peas or red lentils in some form to most of my soups, as a thickener and protein source! It makes a nice broth and kicks up the nutrition/heartiness, to just about anything.
Ok so the fact that her book comes out on my birthday... and it is purple!! 💜 💜💜 My favorite color! I'm taking that as a sign to order and continue on my vegan journey!!
I like the idea of promoting underrated sources of vegan protein! I will definitely buy the spelt flour! And I have already promised myself to eat more tempeh because it’s just so delicious and as much as I love tofu, I think that tempeh deserves more appreciation because it adds a satisfying bite to dishes
I'm not vegan, but I do struggle with getting enough protein and I've been slowly moving towards a more plant based diet. My current favorite obsession is soy curls! They're not 100% like chicken but they scratch the same itch and they're shelf-stable and so, so easy to cook! Gathering recipes now because I'm planning on going vegan for Lent this year!
As a former vegan, don't go vegan. Plant nutrients are more poorly absorbed. This is a major issue if you already struggle with eating enough protein. At least continue eating eggs. You can get a few backyard chickens or find a local farmer to ensure the chickens are treated well. Also, it's a myth than chickens need to eat their unhatched eggs to stay healthy. Feed the shells back to them for calcium, give them kitchen scraps for other nutrients, and let them forage outside for bugs and stuff, and they'll be fine.
@@msjkramey Not a dietitian, but if you're trying to get more plant-based protein, it's probably fairly easy to just include more of the high protein ingredients in your meals, between those featured in the video, alongside tofu, seitan, tvp, beans, and hemp hearts. Might have better recommendations if i knew what your general diet and preferences actually looked like, but maybe this helps.
@DoesItMatterAtAll I'm just not getting it because I don't really gravitate towards protein-rich foods and I'm in a calorie deficit (didn't make that connection until she pointed it out). I just need to put a smidge more effort into it. When I'm exhausted at the end of a long day, I've just been gravitating towards low-protein convenience foods. That's all it is

Good morning Jenee, just discovered your channel and have already ordered your cookbook and have even made two of many of your recipes. I’m not 100% vegan, but I eat like I’m one 😂😂❤❤
@tzar103 I usually just make a version on Simnett Nutrition’s tahini dressing and message it into raw kale and make a salad. I add pumpkin seeds and cucumbers to it. Here’s the dressing recipe: 1/2 cup tahini 1 tbsp mustard 2 pitted medjool dates a little over 1/2 cup water blend all ingredients together and serve
I've been watching your channel for a few years and also bought your first (I think) cookbook. I've made a few of your recipies and they are good. Yours always looks better than mine though. I wanted to mention this on the last video you made like this but didn't get around to it. I recently reread Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe from back in the 70s. She discusses net protein utilization, which I'm sure you are familar with. We know that plant protein isn't "complete" and it's why you get questions about how to get enough protein. That is for example from the book an average serving of tofu has about 8 gms of protein and a NPU of 65 so your body can only use 5 gms. Similar for beans, lentils, etc with NPU ranging from 30 to70. So 80 gms probably is more like 45-50 gms, which is still plenty.
@SweetPotatoSoul Wow these sound so good! Thanks for the personal response. Question about the book. I would like to get it, but my hubby wont eats sweet tater....can I sub regular potatoes in most of the recipes for the sweet ones. At least the savory dishes? Assuming you have sweet potatoes in many if your recipes? Thanks again for the personal reply!!!! Love your channel. ☮️♥️
Can you clarify - is it .36 g per pound of total body weight (even if a person is overweight), or .36 g per pound based on “ideal weight”? I’ve heard both. I’m currently about 50 lbs overweight and trying to lose it. If I use my current weight for the calculation I would need over 75 g daily. If it’s based on my goal weight I would need about 54. I find this confusing when I read about how much protein to eat.
My understanding is that it is current weight. High protein plant based diet can aid in weight loss because these wholesome foods are also low in calories and high in fiber. That combo is great for increasing satiety and supporting your weight loss goals.
So weird...I know I commented and forgot to put the date I originally did this workout (1/21)...just repeated (was supposed to do it three times this month). All good, cause I'm so happy I was able to handle this workout...love your power Pilates @HR, hope you continue to incorporate! 1/30/2025!
Love the meals you showed. However, I would like to add that while the RDA for protein is 0.8gm/kg of body weight. Most experts think that this is not enough for healthy ageing. Most studies point towards a range of 1.2-1.6gm/ kg of body weight. This is very much doable on a plant based diet but will not be possible if we are only relying on whole grains and vegetables for our protein. They are obviously awesome and do contribute to the overall protein intake and are an excellent sources of vitamins and minerals but shouldn’t be treated as primary sources of protein. I think of them more as compliments than really the main source. You yourself obviously eat a very balanced and healthy diet. But there are these idiotic raw vegans who will avoid soy and then think quinoa and chia seeds and kale will get them all the protein they need. They will then develop deficiencies down the road and blame veganism for it. I think it’s important to mention that within plant based protein sources, its wise to try and include one of the more dense protein sources like soy products, seitan, lentils and beans, TVP and may be even plant based protein powders ( though not absolutely necessary, they make meeting protein targets for easier) in the main meals. I don’t think it’s difficult to get 1.2 gm/ kg of body weight protein on a plant based diet at all. But education is key and it’s important to include more protein foods at most meals to ensure we don’t just survive but also thrive living a plant based lifestyle. You yourself are obviously doing it effortlessly and beautifully. Kudos!!
As a dieting overweight vegan I think it’s important to note that the daily protein requirement should be calculated using your ideal weight, not necessarily your current weight.
But when eating low protein for your weight, and you feeling satiated? You guys know I don’t touch weight loss, but someone else commented asking about this. Very curious.
Oof, I eat beans daily but lentils mess me up! I've tried soaking them, buying them precooked, everything... even lentil chips are hard on my tummy. Any tips?

You can just use regular potatoes or butternut squash to sub the sweet potatoes. Instead of Tahini you may want to try sunflower seed butter or almond butter :)
Nothing compares to a steak. Better absorbed, complete amino acid profile, natural creatine and carnitine source, loaded with other vitamins and minerals, and better for the environment. When you add up the number of insects and small animals killed by the heavy machinery, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, one single cow's life for an entire year of protein doesn't even come close. Taken in tandem with the lower bioavailability of plant nutrients and the absorption-limiting effects of fiber, there's simply no reason to be plant based.
