I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you so much for your videos, Ruby. I’m in my 30’s now, so haven’t been to university in about 15 years, but your content has helped me so much recently. When I’m at work, I have your videos on in the background. They’ve motivated to use my time more wisely and try to be more organised as I’ve been suffering with a lot of anxiety recently, which has zapped my motivation and caused a lot of procrastination. I’ve started making to-do lists so I can try and do more of the things I enjoy like reading, writing, crafting (I make junk journals), so thank you!!! I wish you all the best with your studies and know you will smash it, lovely! ❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve been watching you since your high school days and honestly, you’re my favourite person on TH-cam. Your content is so intelligent, so comforting, and I can’t imagine life without a Ruby Granger video. I’m nearing the end of my first year of my Bachelors in English Literature and I just wanted to thank you for being such an incredible inspiration.
Digital books at 7:17. That was just starting early in my career as a librarian back in the late 1980s. Today it is common for documents and books to be scanned and available in digital format. However nothing compares to being able to hold the real physical object of a book. I worked in an archive and research collections section of the university library. We had an original printing of Canterbury Tales. Many books in the early history of printing, handwritten books (pre-printing press), documents, writer's archives, and broadsides.
I teach college English in Dallas, Texas, and I am so glad that I subscribed to your channel some time ago. You're giving me some ideas on how to get my students to develop a more organized, structured study environment. Thank you.
I am a Japanese university examinee. I saw your video so early for the first time! Today, I was shocked to receive a rejection from my second choice of university yesterday and was studying until late at night. The entrance exam for the university I want to go to the most is 10 days away, so I will play your video and do my best while maintaining motivation😭
I am watching more and more of your videos in Oxford, and the timing is perfect since I started BABEL last weekend, and it is great to have a better idea of the surroundings while I am reading (even though, Babel itself isn't real). Plus, I am studying for cybersecurity certifications, and instead of romanticizing my life, I was inspired by your videos to "univerticize" my life, at least regarding my solitary study days. This mindset is helping me to deal with my organization to the certifications more disciplined, organizing deadlines and goals to each amount of time until the test days. Thank you for being so inspiring just by being yourself, to share your passion for what you like, and believe. Your content has soul!
Hi Ruby! I am an Italian nursing student currently in exam session and I really appreciated your reflection about ephemerality. I am about to have an important exam and although it is difficult to put all my effort in it, I understand that next year I won’t be doing it again and that all the emotions I am experiencing right now belong to the present and one day will belong to the past. Cheers from Italy! 💕
I love watching your videos! Not only are they comforting, but they give me loads of motivation to study, study, study! Thank you for doing what you do, Ruby
Can't believe i've been following you for 6 years, holy fuck! i haven't watched any of your videos for the past year and a half, but you've grown so much, you were my age when i started following you. Also, i can't believe how much better your video quality is, i'll still have the young ruby in my heart. Looking up to you!
What utterly perfect timings! I have been watcing your last video bit by bit for the past week so as to not run out of your vlogs to watch, and I was so sad when I finally got through the whole video today. So happy I got a new one!!
I really enjoyed your comment that just because socialising isn't productive in the traditional sense doesn't mean that it isn't important. I'm heading into exams in May and so much emphasis is put on academic results that I think we forget how life has to still go on. 'Balance' is my buzz word at the moment and trying to get that balance between studying and looking after yourself is really important.
I agree with your thoughts about those more relaxed pockets of time spent talking/listening with friends, it is still experiental storytelling in an every day context .. plus it's nice to share experiences!
Thank you for you content Ruby, especially for your last words on this video! It's been an anxious period of time for me these months at work, but it was so valuable to remember the ephemerality of if ❤
I'm happy to hear the Pulter Project mentioned here! I took a Hester Pulter class with Leah Knight (one of the main contributors to the project) and she was so enthusiastic about her work
Beautiful video, Ruby! It is difficult to tell yourself, sometimes, that socializing and spending time with friends IS important, no matter how much your brain says it isn't 'productive.' Because, ultimately, those connections are what matter most in this life. ❤
Hi Ruby! I don't usually leave comments on videos, but I just had to stop by and thank you for including us in your hectic schedule. I am in my last semester of college, soon to receive my painting degree and I love to watch your vlogs while I work in my studio. Your hard work and joy of learning never fail to put me in a good mood. Best wishes for everything!
My favorite TH-camrs are Paola TheCottageFairy , and Ruby grenger . ❤❤. Beautiful souls still exist on the earth . Thanks so much Ruby for your lovely videos Ruby
Loved loved LOVED your thoughts on digitization and online/digital archives! I work for a small archive/museum in the US and we talk and think about this all the time, it's a pretty big interest of mine! Thanks for sharing, and would love to hear more ☺
precisely! Though often something being digitalised doesn't mean it's then publicly available, which is a problem, I think, especially for older material x
@@RubyGranger8Digital is great for communication, terrible for storage (speaking as an electronic engineer). One must remember that if power is removed from a digital computer, its data becomes completely inaccessible. Not so for a book. We had a debate on this topic, in debate club at school in Year 11, and I found myself alone defending paper copies, in front of all of my classmates who were defending digital, and two seemingly confused moderating teachers. (who were especially confused, since I was known as the "science guy" in my school)
Hi Ruby, I wanted to thank you, I am ending a chapter in my academic career (one which I am very sad to be leaving behind) and a lot has changed for me in recent weeks. I want to thank you for what you said at the end of this video about making the most of the time we have and recognizing it's ephemerality. I found it incredibly reassuring❤
❤Thank you for giving us a peek into your studies at Oxford, Ruby! I have a uni. law exam coming up, so after this video I will find a longer ”study with me” video of yours😊 (To keep my motivation and focus up.)
That's it, I'm moving to Oxford. In all seriousness, though, I absolutely adore your videos. I love English language, I am obsessed quite frankly, and after moving back to Poland I miss England so much and I miss the language. Your videos keep me alive basically. Thank you x
ı always wacth you while drinking my Turkish coffee before start my lessons. you and your videos make me feel safe cozy and safe. so thank you for this feeling
Ruby, have you ever considered creating a podcast about things you are interested in and researching? I love podcasts and find your voice very calming, I think it would be fascinating to hear about many things from your perspective.
Ruby, have you ever considered creating an audio book of your favourite poems as you have such a natural talent when reading them and it’s so relaxing to listen too.
That digital humanities article is such a good one, I had to read it to my digital humanities class, I am more a linguistics girl myself but digital humanities has my heart
Nice video. It's so great that you appreciate the emphemeralness of your course and learning activities and opportunities. That old passage you read was lyrical. Also, agree that academic papers should be more avaiable beyond institutional access. Enjoy your studies. :) Thank you for your TH-cam offerings.
Yes, yes and more yes!!!!!!!! The idea of touching a book or a manuscript will never be replaced by a Tablet. The bigger question is the question of Ownership? I use Google One. Do I own my work or does Google own my work because I'm using their platform? Unlike the old days of purchasing Microsoft Office and installing it on my PC I'm now just renting space from Google to use. When the power is down (I live in Louisiana, and we are subject to everything from hurricanes to tornadoes or just rolling blackouts) I can't do anything until I have the Internet back.
Never regret a moment you spend making memories with those you care about. My only regret from Uni is that I put way too much time and effort on academics and not enough time making memories with my fellow students. In the end that is what life is really all about.
Hi ruby! A fan of yours here❤ i just wanna say that i love your videos soo much, it always gives me comfort. And im actually excited because in just a few months we'll migrate to america and it's been my dream😢❤❤
Note on digital material: If you create something in PhotoShop as a flat image with text in it you use to not be able to select that text. But now you can. Take the PhotoShop image and do a screen shot and open it in a basic image editor and you can take you text courser and select the text. Important to know. Also something to watch for.
Your channel has really become special and beautiful. It is even related to me and it makes me motivated to study. When I study, I play your videos and study because I love Oxford very much. I am an Arab girl, but my dream is to study there.
It‘s actually so refreshing to hear from you that it is completely alright, if an evening does not turn our as planned, or to sometimes not be as productive as one wants to be. I just want to thank for sharing that! Media sometimes really pressures me into thinking that I need to be perfectly productive at all times, and if I‘m not I somewhat feel that I‘m failing. It was just so wonderful and validating to see that this completely fine. ❤
Yes it can be fulfilling to have a balance of things, which will vary between people as everyone has different lifestyles, goals, and personal needs. It’s not a 50/50 balance distribution in every case and doesn’t necessarily have to be. The right connections can make life more enjoyable. However, since people are ultimately responsible for their own assignments, exams, other projects, and bills, the demands of each will vary greatly, and the good friends will be understanding and respectful of it since they aren’t expected to look after those results and payments for anyone but themselves and vice versa. No one but you can accurately gauge what the correct balance is for you at any point in time, and you are most certainly entitled to your preferences despite other people’s imposing expectations. ♥️
I was laughing, because your smile was still on your face, and it was because of your friends, Laughing at yourself because of the symposium goof, and then you made me laugh when you stated that you were still procrastinating. I saw a little of your humor side. You keep being you!!!!
Ruby, if you're interested in archives and ephemerality, I'd highly suggest "The Archive and the Repertoire" by Diana Taylor. It's from 2004, so it doesn't account for digital technology developments, but I think the analysis of archives as a concept does really hold up!

I imagine it can be very hard to gain a good work/social balance when studying at Oxford, especially for a Masters. Everyone there is an academic and your 'job' is to study for the time that you're there (which i didn't realise was so short!)
I am also doing my Masters in English from Calcutta University and they conduct their semesters in 2 months time sometimes 1.5 but includes syllabus worth of 6 months study . The situation is so bad we barely study for the sake of study and just gobble everything up for the sake of passing! As a result I am kind of falling out of love with English its really depressing!
I agree with your colleague when it come to trusting digital archives. The digital world is so easy to change or morph facts with agendas that weren't originally there.
If you're interested in digitalisation, I can recommend Sarah Lamdan's excellent book "Data Cartels: The Companies That Control and Monopolize Our Information", which goes into great detail about the way the big publishers track our data throughout the research and publication cycle. It's fascinating, I've just attend a seminar on this topic. It's basically raising some very valid points about how paywalls and other methods that stop people from accessing academic research are going against the very basic tenets of science: exchanging information, learning from the research done by those who came before you, opening up discourse. Highly recommended!

I’m a scientist so I’ll definitely be checking out this Listening app!
Nice. Which branch of science exactly?
There aren’t many scientists in this comment section.
But so many different nationalities are represented, though.
Hi Ruby I finally have time to watch your video! You’re so unique and I wish you could see this😊
Who relates 👇
That hot water bottle is fantastic! ☺
Can you explain more about what do you study? Love your videos 🥰
here comes my fav blogger 😊
your editing and videography is so lovely - this video motivated me to study! fellow uni creator here - so inspired by you and hoping to emulate this energy in my vieos as well!
Do you read every chapter in every academic book? Or do skim reading?
as a movie 😍
It would be interesting if you visited the museums, especially the ashmolean, Pitt rivers and Natural History Museum. I wonder if you can study art history at Oxford?
They have a website.
Some comments I write are visible ONLY to my account, and invisible to everyone else! 😮
I realised that by logging into a different account.
I now have photographic evidence, for anyone who wants!
You seem really enthusiastic of you social interactions, that's so nice to see❤
So enjoyed this, thank you
Hey ruby......Can you do a live study with me stream please? I would love to study along with you❤
Love your videos! If you're interested in digital humanities, put "Graphs, Maps and Trees" by Franco Morelli on your reading list! It's kind of the book that started the field, so it might be a little outdated, but I found it really helpful in helping me understand the field.
Thanks, Ruby. I enjoyed this :)
Are there any haunted places or part of the castles in oxford? OMG you literally look like hermione granger reading and walking around the halls. I am so jealous but also so proud, all that hardwork paid off ruby! all the best wishes to you
Ruby, so your Master's degree in English is just a one year program? When do you expect to graduate? Will you do a PhD?
I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and really like it. I love the videos you are posting. Are you still in University? Do you also work? What job do you have?
Very inspiring vlog:)
Wow I love your blog
The ultimate Betjemin blue stocking.
Hi Ruby! Greetings from Austin, TX, USA. I love your videos! I'm curious though. What are your plans with your education after you complete your Masters degree? Are you looking to be a professor? Writer? :)
Thanks a lot for your videos Rudy, why do you have a desktop, laptop and tablet at the same time?
Still going at it.
Can we please have a new study with me (no music) !! 🥺
