I am 74 years old and have had a back itch in the exact same spot for about 65 years. I have a dear husband who knows how to gently rub "the spot" without irritating my skin with his nails. and in the shower, i scrub with an exfoliating cloth. I could not imagine how or why this one little place would itch if nothing were "wrong," but you have finally explained it to me. Thank you so much for this clear and easy to understand video.

I too have a spot on my right scapula. I resorted to using a lotion applicator (3-4" silicone pad on a curved bamboo stick about 20" long) to rub lubriderm or equivalent on my back. I have been a widow for 20 years now and live alone. I also have a back scratcher made from deer or elk antlers that is really handy for the needed occasional scratching! LOL

Buy yourself a BAMBOO back scratcher, they are light and strong, and I guess you can sand paper the tips smoother if preferred!!!

Over a year ago, I noticed I started this itch on my back between my left shoulder blade and spine. I also have the Brachioradical issue with the dry skin and itch on my lower arms. It was only several months ago that a dermatologist told me what it was. Gabapentin doesn't work for me. I use an Icy hot gel with lidocayne and menthol. It helps but not often through a whole day. I got some exercises from a chiropractor, and i am applying that. This condition can drive you nuts. Dr. Bailey, BTW my family name, you've given me some tips and a better understanding. Thanks.

thank you, dr. Bailey. My name is john and I've suffered with unreasonable itchyness for all my 73 years. Because I'm a man hair began to grow out my back at around 40, and this seems to make things worse. Itching and pain are closely related, I read. the little extra hairs bend around and tickle me, or so my brain thinks. then the itching begins. I have an itching tool, yes it gets really bizarre, but I bought it at a yard sale about 20 years ago. It a plastic tool with tines for digging sphegitti out of a pot and its works well. I have to scratch every square inch of my back parts fearroiushly and howl it a kind of relief that borders on pain, and the pain errupts from my back with a great flood of relieving energy, maybe for 10 minutes before it begins to finally settle down. Also the fronts of my legs itch and I get tiny biting iches on neck scalp and feet. Please don't laugh but because of this discomfort I also hope to die, even my eyeballs itch and within my ears bite at me. I berate myself since I've known people with worse pain and discomfort. But I'm going to go to the store tomorrow for the alpha hydroxy acid and use it the way youu instructed. thank you for your compassion.I'm tired of fidgeting and scratching. There's even a lot more to tell but......

Thank you so much for this informative video. I have been suffering from this unsatiable itch for almost 6 years now, have gone to several doctors everytime getting a different diagnosis (neurodermatitis, macular amyloidosis and finally nostalgia parasthetica). I've never had a biopsy only physical examination. My condition has gotten so bad the itchiness and thus pigmentation is all over my entire upper back from my neck to the bottom of my shoulder blades both sides basically separating my upper back and lower back into two distinct colours! The treatment I've been prescribed everytime is applying cortisone cream twice daily for months and it does relieve the pain but once I stop it's back again and I'm concerned about long term use of cortisone. It's insane how a little itch can affect your life so much I'm constantly scratching my back subconsciously from the moment I wake up, at work, while driving, and also during my sleep!
I'm glad to see treatments out there that are not cortisone related I will try them out and hopefully they help in relieving the symptoms. Do you have any general advice regarding the aesthetics? My entire upper back is significantly darker than the rest of my skin and its appearance is really frustrating. Does the treatment also help with the appearance or something else? Thanks once again Doctor for all your help!!

the AHAs can lighten hyperpigmentation from chronic friction. amyloidosis is a biopsy diagnosis. Interesting that a doc mentioned it. Best of luck and thanks for watching - itch is so vexing. You’ve hit the nail on this one. As a mature adult, I have had chronic atopic eczema since birth, but recognise what you describe as distinct from the AE. Up to now, the only solution has been a very hot hand held shower - you should see my energy bill! Will consult my GP and consultant again with this in mind, but try your tips in the mean time. Would love some relief from the problem.

  • @pluckydad

Very informative and concise video. Thank you for posting it.
I suffered from brachioradial pruritis (BP) for many years. Some years were not so bad but recently it became unbearable such that the biting itch would wake me up most nights and I would go to the freezer in the middle of the night to apply ice packs to my two arms, wrists, and shoulders then apply thick coats of lidocaine before I could get any sleep.
I did some research in the medical pubs and I also saw a dermatologist and a neurologist, neither of which seemed to know how to get rid of my affliction.
From the medical pubs, I could see that, while the origin of BP is still not definitely known, a lot of the evidence points to nerve damage in the C5 and C6 vertebrae from which nerves extend to the arms. That sent me to investigate whether chiropractic treatment might help. After some roaming around on the internet, I found that an upper cervical chiropractor (a specialty in chiropractic treatment) would be appropriate so I found one and went.
For me, the three visits, which included three x-rays, one adjustment on my C1 (the Atlas vertebrate) and one adjustment on my C5 vertebrate, helped relieve the itching tremendously. I still get an occasional itch every couple of days but, like I told my wife, the itch feels more like someone passing a stiff turkey feather down my arm rather than someone throwing a bucket full of angry fire ants on my arms. I don’t need to see the chiropractor anymore after these visits. It’s not like an ongoing treatment that some ailments require (cancer, diabetes, etc), but it is more like a doctor who sets a broken bone and I’m good to go. Now it’s up to my body to heal. BTW, total out of pocket cost for me was $720. Well worth it.

Hi Dr. Bailey. I came across your channel. So for now 2023, what body wash, soap, and laundry soap do you recommend. I am one of those that I keep scratching my back. Sometimes it's tolerable and sometimes it's not so I will ask my husband to scratch it for me. There are times that I take a shower more than 2x a day thinking that maybe the dust.

  • @jdee4956

I think that must explain my itchy forearms, particularly my left arm. I can find no bites or rashes, yet it is itchy as hell. It wakes me up in the middle of the night sometimes (when I am warm!) and I scratch away until I lift skin. I actually thought it might be hives, but it can be quite stingy as well. I think loads of moisturiser helps - but thanks for the ice pack suggestion! Never heard of that before ...

PLEASE if you are going to scratch clean your hands and nails THOROUGHLY before you scratch. Avoid infecting your skin at all costs. Apply Sudocrem to damaged skin, it probably saved my life.

Axsain gel or Capsagel is also supposed to help (it's the capsicum in it, I think).

Capsaicin is interesting and it can help with nerve signalling. We have used it for post herpetic neuralgia from shingles and it gives relief to some folks. It is an interesting thing to try along with the good skin care to control skin flakes that start the tickle cascade. Heck, capsaicin and an ice pack when the itching is crazy - why not?! It's worth a try. I love to slather glycolic acid lotion on the itch to confuse the nerve signals. Most important - no scratching!

I have both, but only in winter. My theory is that the less I perspire the dryer the skin is and vice-versa. Wish I could find a nice place to live - on the equator.

I have the back itch exactly as you describe. Thank you for this excellent explanation. I also have the same itch sensation over one hip/buttock, especially at night. Is it likely this is caused by nerve irritation lower in spine/hip?

I have had this condition for several years. It comes and goes and is usually associated with excruciating pain around my left shoulder blade. When I first started experiencing the itching my Dr sent me to every specialist she could think of and no one was able to diagnose it. I ended up at a neurologist who sent me for an Xray where they discovered the skeletal connection. I was about to go out of my mind with the itching when I saw a television commercial for "Tri-Calm". I use it topically whenever the itching starts and it calms it down until the next bout. (this last time I was itch free for months). Others have said it does not work for them, but it is a miracle for me. Also great for poison ivy and mosquito bites!!

I found Dr.Teal's eucalyptus and spearmint bath oil to be soothing to the itchy sensation.I also use oregano oil mixed with olive oil to be helpful by applying it to the affected area. I just put 3 drops of f oregano oil to a tablespoon of extra virgin oil to relieve the itch at night. I put Dr.Teal's eucalyptus and spearmint oil on my body right after bathing not during bathing because it is too slippery .It might cause an accident on my part.

I didn’t hear her mention chiropractic care? If you have nerve impingement perhaps a chiropractor can release the impingement, if it’s degeneration I’m not sure that helps. It’s about complete body care, not covering up an issue.

I am from middle east. to take a shower we let the skin gets soft then we use a rough cloth made like a pocket slightly we apply caws fat on it and move in a slow motion on skin and roll the dead skin off of our skin. then we use soft cloth and apply soap to wash our body. We use help to wash our back. It matches the exfoliate explained here. A great video.

I had one of these itchy spots and it turned out to be a mild form of skiing cancer . very slow spreading and can be removed via surgery . however after it was removed there has been a sporadic burning type pain on one end of the stitched up area .

Yes, from both knees down the shins to the ankle area. My last bout was 10 days long. And I started with hot water and warm compresses... not good. Need cold water to calm the itch. It does eventually go away but it brings madness when I have an outbreak.
