Always do a reboot from within the Starlink App on the wifi and the router once a day. That will dramatically help with speeds... Also put the dish into stow mode and then hit un stow once a day and that will also force to dish to find a more preferred satellite which helps the speeds big time. I am in a waitlist area with the RV version and my speeds are always up near 70-100Mb download. Get 2-3 mesh units as well.... Huge difference !! AWESOME!!!

Starlink 2.0 will make the biggest difference, sadly we will have to wait for Starship to fly before these are in orbit as 2.0 is to wide for Falcon 9 fairing (current launch vehicle)
The plan is to hit 50% of the Starlinks late 2024, so there is a ton more to be launches and will help with spikes.

Thanks for the info! I'm surprised with the wattage draw on Starlink considering what it's doing. That's great. My Ultrawide 34" monitor only draws 24w and my gaming pc will draw up to 350w while gaming. My 2600w/1075Wh 'grid down' solar power system can manage that easily. I get frequent power outages where I live, sometimes lasting for over 24 hours, and I want to continue to work and game while keeping the essentials up and running.

Just found this channel and am stoked to see another full timer who's gaming on the road! I've been full time in an RV for a year and have been considering moving to starlink for a while but have some hesitations. Typically I am in cities for about a month or so and then out at national parks/off grid for a couple months then back to a city for a while. I was wondering how your experience has been anytime you are nearby cities? I have heard a lot of bad things about portability mode not performing well or having no connection when near cities because of lack of availability

  • @anarex0929
    @anarex0929 2 ปีที่แล้ว

if the wifi is slower, your PC adapter is crap. But what you should be thinking about more is that if you turn the wifi function off on the router and just use it with ethernet, you could save power and NOT advertise your vans not just a van in urban environments. Those two points I would think matter more as your phone can just run off Cel most of the time.
You could also make your wifi invisible in the router settings. Your devices that are already connected will still find it but everyone else but wifi snoops will not see it. enjoy your content.

    Actual network engineer here
Wi-Fi gets a bad rep because of CSMA/CA.
    Ethernet technically uses CSMA/CD.
Both uses carrier-sense multiple access, but Ethernet uses collision DETECTION while Wi-Fi uses collision AVOIDANCE.
Wi-Fi checks to see if anyone is transmitting on the channel. If the node senses that there is a transmission (from another client or the access point), it waits a random amount of time and tries again. It then sends the entire frame, hogging the channel until it is finished.
At best, with only two devices in the middle of nowhere, you are going to get a simplex (or half-duplex) link. This is because only one device can transmit at a time.
Wi-Fi, especially in the 2.4 GHz bands, has significant interference problems, causing dropped packets. 2.4 GHz is particularly bad since only channels 1, 6, 11 and (not legal in US) 14 do not overlap each other, but all Wi-Fi channels overlap with adjacent channels. Many wireless devices (phones, baby monitors, car alarms) and all home microwaves use the 2.4 GHz spectrum as well, since it is unlicensed world-wide.
This is OK for downloading porn, checking your email, watching TH-cam, and talking to your mom on Facebook, as web browsing is mostly one-way traffic, with some control and connection acknowledgement sent back to the server, but this is horrible for gaming.
Gaming not only has a lot of bidirectional communication, but uses UDP, a connectionless protocol. TCP checks to see if the data was received and has information embedded in the datagram to allow for reassembly of out-of-order packets. UDP, on the other hand, just throws the packets in the general direction of the recipient and just assumes that the recipient got enough of them to do what it needs to.
802.11ax (marketed as Wi-Fi 6) alleviates this somewhat since it allows the access point (usually a home router) to use multiple antennas to determine where clients are and to beamform the transmissions, creating a fake point-to-point link.
Ethernet does technically do a carrier sense. However, this only really mattered when Ethernet was using coaxial cable and vampire taps. Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T), the current standard for "normal" Ethernet, is a full-duplex connection and, unlike its coaxial ancestor, a point-to-point connection. This means that while the carrier sense still happens, it never sees the line as "occupied", so it never has to wait to transmit.
This is why an Ethernet connection will ALWAYS be superior to a Wi-Fi connection, even if the latter officially offers a higher bandwidth, like 802.11ax in ideal conditions.

60-70 ping as long as it's stable is just fine. In LATAM we play at 100+ ms, if we get 70-90, that's considered really good

Hey use Neodymium Magnets to attach it temporarily to the van, I know that wind can be a pain in the booty.

Were you self taught when modeling/constructing your van? And are energy dishes/batteries easier to set up than it sounds or do you have a background in electrician?
