      Before I watch the video, he uses multi tonality, aka multiple scales 😊
      In his masterclass video he also admits he doesn’t know s**t about music theory and uses what sounds good to him. Seems a valid approach, in the end it’s about how it sounds, the theory is just a tool to get there.

Something I feel he excels in is the composition of the songs and vocal melodies. His sound design is good but even mau5 said sourcing vocals and Melodies was kaskades strong point. I’m sure he played a huge part in the vocals for I Remember.

    I think what's also key for him in newer tracks is the way he uses polymeters and -rhythms and "unexpected" re-sync triggers of arps. So he might have a chord of 4 notes and set an arp-sequence of length 7/8 that would return to home after 8 meters, but throughout he changes chords 3 times and 2 times he resets the arp-sequence back to 1. And if you do it "randomly" it would sound off and out-of-tune, but he chooses them such that it works out.

    Go play Random Album Title to hear the ingredients that make up a Deadmau5 track and this came out years and years before LFO Tool and Serum came out (however one tip not mentioned is that Joel and Steve Duda (the guy that created LFO Tool and Serum) was a buddy of Joel's and Joel has been using beta versions of LFO Tool and SERUM for years before they were available to the public. That helped because the sounds Deadmau5 was creating were so in your face compared to what most everybody else was doing. They also released a killer sample pack you can still buy which is even today a gold mine of killer samples, especially the cymbal/kick effects. Great video dude.... If you play Random Album Title (which spells RAT by the way for those wanting an inside joke) - you'll hear techniques that are now used in most EVERY genre of dance music that in many cases, Joel did first. He's one of our pioneers being truly one of the OG of EDM before it was even called EDM.

    Never been fully convinced by Joel. His Masterclass wasn't great (learnt more about his style from just this tutorial..) but he's made a few quid hasn't he? so what do I know.. Great job anyway Will. Think the simplicity thing is going to be my takeaway from it, as probably like many people, I've a tendency to over-complicate the arrangement. Actually, a good tip is leave it a couple of days then give it an honest appraisal.

    Honestly his work with Mellee was where I first came across him, as a DJ for "adult oriented" events. I have seen some major musical growth since then. However I think his willingness to push a sexual envelope certainly didn't hurt and got some immediate attention for him, after that he stepped up his game seriously, but that old stuff still gets played more in my DJ sets.

    Great tune, it would be amazing if you could to do a deep dive into the advanced mixing techniques your using on some of these productions, like after you finish a track video like this one.. maybe do a one off part 2 followup of it- showing a more in depth form of how you used your techniques to get to the next step in mixing it and so on. It would be cool to see sometime, knowing when not to overmix and when to stop is a good concept as well. Keep up the good work 👏

    Will! Great video as always.
    Question: I don't really use sends for fx ever, maybe in a special case i.e. sidechain ducked reverb.
    Do you feel that using either busses instead or on single tracks is worse? And why/why not :)
    I feel the control and overview is better using sends, but i find myself often wanting to dip over to 50%+ wet when doing atmos, fx etc, and i can't do that with the aux channel technique afaik.

    • @PlugInGuruVideo
      @PlugInGuruVideo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Set your dry channel to Pre Fader so 100% of signal is also being sent to the AUX channel to get more signal. The killer thing with AUX busses is you can have a dry signal that you automate up the send for a reverb splash and even if the reverb is 10 seconds long, it doesn't get cut out which would happen if you automate the wet/dry on a reverb on a channel. Once you nail using it to add splashes into a huge reverb you'll never go back. :D

  • @xnaut_g

    Opening up the filter itself is an interesting technique. So is dragging and dropping samples into the midi clip’s sample bay although I’m confident there’s a different term for it. Of course ducking the plucks and mixing them into the kick brings out a whole lot of deadmau5 vibes, thank you for that. It occurs to me that you’ll possibly make known many options within Ableton Live. I’m only about 15 minutes in and the use of both compression/ return is what I find most boomy. Boomy as in great for producers to practice and get to know. To really cook the track consider all your preset ideas to be the oven and automation as raw fire doing the work. Except that would make your tracks specifically way too hot. So please take my input with a grain of Jesus’ humility. Practice makes perfect and I believe that.

    Another question, i see people not wanting the kick tail to be longer than 1/4 nowadays, even Joel himself. Is there any genres which this "rule" doesn't apply? I figure the song you ripped the kick from is an older track

    • @JakkeJakobsen
      @JakkeJakobsen ปีที่แล้ว

      Well a fully developed hardstyle kick (as opposed to the dry kick it's made from of course) is one example, but that is obvious I guess, it's the bread and butter of the genre.

    Hi, Will! Great content as always! Personally, I’ll try not be as shy with the sidechain and the plucks on the 8ths (maybe with a rhythmic twist here and there) is what I’m taking away as far as techniques. (Always a good reminder from you about stuff that I know but simply don’t employ too much of).
    Best advice I’m taking tho is that one simply can’t get good without dedication and practice. Sounds so cliché, but it’s because it’s true and one can’t really get this until actually putting in the time.
    Similar to Guetta, peeps can have different opinions about the persona or the brand, but d-mouse clearly knows what is going on. And so do You, sir! Many thanks as always!!!
    P.S. is it me, or You didn’t in fact use the Mpc 57 swing groove!? :)😊
