Yes, quite agree; the fundamental principles were discussed without getting bogged down into vast tables of correspondences. The laws of sympathy and contagion underpin all magic. (No, I don'
t feel compelled to add a 'k' to the word magic -- its clear the meaning is real, no stage magic for entertainment). Again, kudos to Angela Puca for sharing her thoughts with us!😊

I really like your approach! I wanted to learn about historical magic and the beliefs and world views connected to it.
If you still take ideas for new videos, I would really love a video on how I might envision spirits. While we today think of them as incorporeal and invisible, in mythology there are several spirit creatures - such as ghouls, vampires, nymphs, satyrs... - who are described as corporeal, even carnal or violent. Yet they all obey more "spiritual/mental" rules like the inability of the vampire to enter homes uninvited.

Very nice synopsis. Regarding the spread of Wicca and its changing role I have a few thoughts. I was involved in starting a chapter of CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) as part of a Unitarian Universalist congregation on Connecticut. We had several members who were more, for lack of better terms, magic oriented and several who were more religious oriented. There was a real dichotomy and eventually the group I helped found died off and a new one took its place that was more inclusive/family friendly. This was one of the big challenges. There were those of us who believed that magic by its very nature is initiatory and requires study and maturity vs the religious folks who wanted to include children in services and have a more general approach. I came away believing that Pagans sacrificed too much to be accepted.

I find it interesting that Frazers two sub-categories of sympathetic magic, that is contagious & imitative, are of the same forms as NLP's anchoring where any part of an intense experience can be used to reaccess that experience, a form of single trial learning & pacing, that is by subtly copying another's behavior ie breathing, certain words or phrases etc, one gets rapport with that person, if these are true, maybe the earlier magical forms were an implicit unconscious understanding of their existence?

Insightful and helpful video! Human cognition is pretty comparative (in contrast to abstract reasoning and probabilistic reasoning) so i understand the need to compare magik with other ways of making [sense of] the world but i have a hard time not seeing comparisons to science or religion as implicitly derogatory on the parts of those scholars. Doesn't any scholar compare magik practices to the artistic creative process? Nelson Goodman's philosophy of World-making or Feyerabend's Against Method seems like golden opportunities for understanding what we are doing when invoking and/or evoking.

  • @NubiBuiltKatchr

Exceptional content! So much to unpack & think about! I appreciate your observation regarding how thinkers have felt a need to contrast Magick to science or religion. I theorize Magick is (among many other things) an intersection of humanity’s attempt to grasp and understand the universe when both science & religion fall short. I feel the more we advance scientific knowledge, especially in quantum studies, and the more we advance religious knowledge, especially in ancient mysteries & mystical studies, the more this gap closes. I believe Magick might be the missing connection between these disciplines. One day we might actually understand our universe if Magick ceases being occult.

    1. Correspondences. I would add to this that one needs to appreciate the mystical nature of human beings and the change in mystical practices as people left gathering societies and emerged in civilizations.
There is sort of a belief for instance that mesopotamians fashioned idols and preyed to them. But there is a growing body of evidence they practiced astronomy and astrology. Some of the temples may have been built to enhance mystical experience. Also there is a long tradition in both mesopotamia and Egypt of desert sages (The upkulla for ea) and there appears to be a site of Jahwist sages occupied from the 9th century BCE.
We have a distinctive magic because of a group of priest that were renouned for certain practices and more open mystical practices, but looking at the spectrum of beliefs there were practices of a variety of nature performed everywhere. The blood ritual and animal sacrifices in Judaism for example.
Getting to my point, the hiddeness in correspondence may be a trend, or inate feature of esoteric mysticism. That not only is esoteric things hard to see, but are meant by many/most practicianers to be kept hidden. The idea here is there is a mystic feature of the mind that allows the practician to see past ones or to influence or understand others. The esoteric influencers/influences constitute a part of the individuals definition of thier divine(ities).

This is great video. I am learning a lot from your videos Thank you! This got me thinking of the concept of the true will and also the training of the will. that is one thing I think that makes magick different from religion, It is not about giving up the will but sharpening the will and making it stronger. there is a quote in the book the secret science behind miracles,"Dr. Paul Tillich, Professor of Philosophical Theology at Union Theological Seminary writes, "Magic is a special kind of interrelation between finite powers; religion is the human relation to the infinite power and value.... Magic is the exercise of imminent power, religion is the subjection to the transcendent power."

I am intrigued by a law of correspondences; how is it that analogy can work at all? I sometimes think of magic as the understanding/ use of the technology of metaphor . I like that positioning of magic between religion and science. (non-causal?; rather Jungs acausal or more accurately non-linear - it seems many confuse the lack of an efficient cause with no cause at all ). You reveal some of my own more obscure thinking to myself; thank you for that! i generally use the term 'fractal' as a way of understanding the way metaphor/analogy operate, how everything can turn into everything else (meta-morphosis as core process philosophy) Your definition of Occult is nice, makes me realize that its just always a matter of thinking larger - speculative riffing. Heck, when your video ended I felt a literal 'shove' forward towards the screen - freaked me out - you must be doing something right! Keep up the good work!

      Hi Morgan,
So glad you liked and "felt" my video! :-)
I agree, there might be various ways of defining and understanding the elements I addressed in the video, like different perspectives to explain the peculiar way analogies work in magic. I will have to make a video on Jung sometime in the future as his thought intrigues me a lot!

Good question, Shane! I'd say it provides an active bridge.

    • @ShaneMorris0n
      @ShaneMorris0n 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@drangelapuca - Does evidence support such a bridge or is it the case that at the base of reality, expression is achieved through reductive alchemical activity.
Seems to me that magic may just be ordinary reality expression cloaked in the inscrutability of the magician rather than something of itself.
Unless you are suggesting its a separate activity of nature?

  • @archaic9525

Magick acknowledges religious claim of a greater reality beyond the physical plane. It also states there is a methodic way to explore it, as rational as science aims to be. Hence a proficient magician is a seeker, never is a believer. He /she knows certain methods produce certain results. That is all. The main actual field explored is, consciously or not, the quantum field.

Ok i surrender. hi angela, thanks for the video! first of all i always thought myself to be an atheist or an agnostic. with that said, lets unburden things i always thought could never be spoken. i used to write short stories and draw little cartoons. but i stoped. because all i ever did was heavily influenced by kafka and camus (sort of tainted on how small and irrelevent our lives are macrocosmically). i would write these things trying to get rid of these feelings and thoughts but it would all come back to haunt me. it all came back to haunt me. i also studied cinema, and i started to believe that part of this haunting thing was due to some people having something like cameras on their faces. positive and negative poles play a huge part on these beliefs. so in this mix of "self-damnation" i stoped producing (what i always thought of as) art or things i did just to get it out of my system. i never really liked "ready" explanations of what was going on, such as calling it magick or turning myself to wiccan beliefs (i did study hinduism and paganism) and have been taking medication and going to a psychiatrist for the last 10 years. i dont want to call it magick. because all i ever did was damn myself with this. id still like to call myself an atheist, because sure there are unexplained things out there (and in here) but i believe gods have nothing to do with it. forces, not gods. polarities and attractions, dispersions, not gods. i think i just wanted to share my (sort of) entry in the occult. i also believe knowlege is somewhat divine. :) i dont really share these things, but your video made me confortable enough to.
Have you ever read comic book authors Grant Morrison (i highly recommend The Invisibles) and Alan Moore? i believe both believe and practice magick, or some sort of manipulation of occult forces and symbols.
    Cheers! and sorry for babling...

    Question
In your opinion do you think that Majik was meant and developed to bring out our inner power to influence our lives and the world around us
Or do you think Majik was developed to cause us to call upon entities from another realm so they could teach us how to empower ourselves

Have you ever heard of Oberon Zell-Ravenheart or the Grey School of Wizardry? His book that he uses more or less as a curriculum for the school covers this same topic in language meant to be digested by children 11-18, just like Hogwarts hypothetically would have in the Harry Potter universe. I deeply appreciated your more adult treatment of the subject, but if you have not already interfaced with him, I would highly recommend it.

this question may not be related but is there any connection with the magician and the artist. can the Magician by creating art ..... cast a spell? is it a ritualistic process in itself?

Interestingly enough, everything in this world is kind of linked as atoms from all substances mix on some level when in the vicinity of one another. It's crazy how many ancient beliefs actually line up, in some ways, with what we have discovered through scientific advancement.

From my point of view magic is divided by its definition and united by its field of study. For the latter, everything. For the former; contrast LeVey's definition of magic as that which science has not yet explained with Crowley's definition as the art of science of causing change to occur in accordance with Will, ad infinitum.

Some other-worldly creatures, like fairies, are reportedly able to use "glamour" (the ability to use the power to create illusions to make humans see them as more beautiful or ugly as they actually are or appear to shape-shift - in fact, any sort of illusion). Do any modern practitioners of magic use this art and if so which philosophical element does it fit into? Thanks :)

    • @drangelapuca
      @drangelapuca  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew,
Thank you for the interesting question.
There are indeed contemporary practitioners who practise Glamour Magic, which fits perfectly the Law of Sympathy and would fit the Law of Contagion, provided there is another person involved.
For instance, if someone has to cast an invisibility spell to go unseen through a dangerous situation, they might construct the ritual by enacting some kind of hiding or using a cloak. This follows the 'like attracts the like' principle, according to which things and actions which resemble each other have a connection and can trigger a change in reality. If the person wanted to become "invisible" to a certain person, they might employ something that belongs to that person (Law of Contagion) and is somewhat connected to hiding or concealing (Law of Sympathy).
Hope this makes sense and answers your question. :-)

I love your videos. They are excellent. Thank you for doing this. I wonder if you have ever heard of a philosophy which says that everything is magick? That once a magical operation is mastered to some extent and phenomena becomes repeatable in a lab, it then attains the invented label of "science"? It still remains magick. Is not the smart phone the realization of the fabled magick mirror? Isn't The automobile the carnate dream of a horseless carriage? Manufacturers can create sapphires and diamonds from a handful a dust and precise rituals utilizing complex and arcane accoutrement. How is that not magick? I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on this idea and how it could pertain to standard magickal philosophy. Personally it makes common life more interesting and special but also frustrating. Standard people refuse to see it that way even if they are holding an all knowing, all seeing god devise in their hands. It's just a phone to them.

It's somewhat funny and strange to see that Frazer built his "evolutionary" framework on the common but false assumption that evolution implies progress. It really doesn't, it implies change and adaptation to the current enviroment. To use the memetic language, it implies that the cultural memes that stay with us are the ones that are best at multiplying and sticking in our heads for any reason. Doesn't necessarily mean they improve or worsen our condition and happiness, only that humans found them attractive enough to keep copying them

Its kind of interesting how similar the law of contagion is to quantum entanglement. In quantum mechanics, instead of being in contact causing a connection, it is making a measurement. So, if one thing gains information about the quantum state of another thing, it causes the two things to become quantum entangled. So, in both magic and science, two items having a past connection of some type can result in a lasting unseen and mysterious connection between the two. Here is a link to a youtube video that talks about the exchange of quantum state information causing entanglement th-cam.com/video/sFRdVj4rrAE/w-d-xo.html

I've commented on one of your other videos, where I object to there being any scientific in religion, New Age, magick, whatever. The reason is that science is *far from* almighty. I want to pinpoint that science in the strict sense requires reproducibility, based on rigorous observation, preferably providing an explanation based on earlier science. Therefore science delivers *much much less than* it promises. Then: the rigorous observation apparatus and explanations based on earlier science is missing in magick/magic, or whatever.

Frazer was neither a practitioner of magick nor was he much good at anthropology. The keyword is not Contagion but Persuasion. Stanley J. Tambiah's work with the Zande sorcerer's is much more relevant to magick as it is actually practiced.
