When and How to Drop Shot Bass in Grass

- Take it from Jacob Wheeler, drop shot rigging isn’t just for rock piles or wood. Putting the setup to work in weed beds often out-produces conventional Texas rigging, jigs and other weedless presentations but requires some rigging knowledge and the correct gear.
Wheeler dives into the importance of using a braided mainline to a heavier fluorocarbon leader. Light yet strong braid reduces wind drift while delivering excellent strength and abrasion resistance around cover. While offset hooks work, Wheeler prefers Texas rigging finesse worms using a straight shank hook. He explains his case and favorite hook for Texas rigging thin-profiled baits.
While grass certainly transmits differently than hard cover, the concept of reading the cover is pretty much the same. Jacob explains the importance of feeling the weeds and working the bait in place next to clumps or other anomalies. As with any Texas-rigged bait, you need some hook setting power to drive the hook home through the plastic and into the mouth - Wheeler details how to execute successful hook sets when drop shotting Texas-rigged plastics.

@@chaseerry The MLF format of fishing is better for his type of fishing. He's a machine and catches fish all day. Plus the MLF format is better for our bass fisheries with the catch and release on the spot. BASS needs to change this if they want to be considered a BASS conservation format.

i just spool 8lb nano 3 weeks ago and i must say its pretty good. no issues at all. i switched from sunline sx1. prolly wont go back to sunline braid for spinning applications. its 20$ plus per 150yrd spool.

I don't get to fish the drop shot in the weeds much but It's nice out deep vertical. That's my favorite way to fish it.

You have electronics and a boat. How does work for the shore caster?
It works. I just got a boat, never had one before used it from the bank plenty to not get hung up. Run a chatterbait through the weeds and find the fish, if they get finnicky pull out the drop shot and a straight sinker cylinder shaped. Doesn't get hung in the grass as bad, not sure if Jacob covered this.

Nano braid comes 150 yards do you tie a knot to join more line to fill your spool..

Is it possible to see bass in the weeds with sonar?
Hi Richard, clearly seeing gamefish in weeds is one of the biggest limitations to all varieties of sonar. Variables include type of vegetation, density, how the fish are positioned in it, etc. If bass are tight to the cover, then clearly reading them is not likely.
What is that hook?
Is that line similar to nanofil? I have 8 lb on my spinning reel and I tied a 6 ft leader with 8 lb flouro. I guess I’m asking is the leader even necessary?
You know there is fish there , your using under water camera’s .
