- I've noticed a common trend online in the last couple of years. It seems like there is a select group of people who think it's somehow interesting or intellectual to hate everything and talk down to those who are enjoying things. Valid criticisms are one thing, but it really does seem to be a case of some people not being able to tolerate what others enjoy, or not being able to enjoy most things. These aren't people with selective taste - they're just people who want to have a different or controversial image to stand out, and I really don't find that interesting or unique. #spiderman #starwars #hipster

Another thing that I noticed is that there is a push for someone to either love or hate something. You can't feel like a movie is just good, it's either amazing or awful. It feels like we can't have movies or games which are "decent" anymore.
In a similar notion, you can't call something mediocre or good enough. If you don't absolutely hate something or absolutely love something in the same way as someone else you are put down for it. Anything that's rated between 3-7 out of 10 doesn't exist anymore.
@@65firered I recently had a chat with a good friend where I said a recent movie was a 6/10 and he replied "so it's bad?" and he also said a 5/10 means it's a bad score.
Maybe I'm the crazy person here, but it makes sense to me that if you have a 10 point score system a 5/10 means the product is completely mediocre and a 6/10 means the product is very slightly above mediocrity.
@@AlissonMK9 Exactly. 6 is decent like a -B where a 5 is meh, mediocre, average a C. 7/10 is good but for some reason, a lot of people think it's a bad rating though I think the media is mostly responsible for this.
Yeah that's absolutely true. Also nobody will watch a video that any TH-camr posts it seems like when they think something is decent. It has to be an insane polarizing thing to get them attention to even from that mindset. So I think you see a lot of people who genuinely think like a movie's okay or not that great but it's fine and they will create a video about how they hated absolutely everything about it, or you'll have people who think a movie is okay or fine and they'll create a video to defend every aspect of it to show how much they love it and bring in that audience. And when you actually feel that way I think that's valid and worth doing and sharing those opinions but when it's just exaggerating how you feel and not genuine I don't really like when people do that unless it's meant to be done for comedic purposes etc.
@@DegenerateJay I never thought about this from the creators perspective. I guess the whole situation is a loop, the audience eats up polarizing content which is an incentive for TH-camrs or reviewers to make more polarizing content and this is slowly putting us in a position where any media project is either above 8/10 or below 2/10.

Look at how all the vitriolic hive mind hate bots are acting with the Matrix. Everyone are now like caricature representations of the comic book guy from the Simpsons.
A lot of fandoms on the internet seem to have a cult mindset of if you don't absolutely adore something they love or you don't dislike something they hate, then they will tear you down. Long story short, it feels as though we can't always have our own opinion. I'm really hyped for The Batman and how we're getting an angry and brutal noir detective that is basically psychologically fucked up and is going to make mistakes and also learn from those mistakes. The Burton and Nolan movies are good but they are not perfect and the same could be said for the Snyder DC movies, they are good and fun and I respect and accept the director's vision for these characters, but it doesn't mean I have to love those interpretations especially with me seeing the OG DCAU as the perfect adaptation of the DC universe. I really like the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, especially more because of Clone Wars, but it's definitely not perfect. One of my guilty pleasure DC movies is Green Lantern, it's a fun but far from flawless movie. I honestly couldn't care if some people aren't excited for the movie. It's cool to have agreements and disagreements, but when it comes to this toxic behaviour, it can be rather annoying and it come to a point where they don't matter.
In like 10 years from now there will most likely be videos called “10 reasons why Spider-Man no way home is not as good as you remember”

It's not hard to figure out why.
The thing is its just so boring and seriously tiresome after a while. It's takes far more energy out of you especially from the mental side to hate loads of stuff that it does to love just a few stuff. When it comes to Cinema I would say it's actually important to like bad films (not all of course) in order to 1. understand why they are bad, 2. why some of them tend to have a pretty big following and 3. it gives you an even greater insight into makes good films good. This is why big filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Edgar Wright amongst many others mostly of that whole generation are really great to listen to. None of them are afraid to showcase the bad films they do love. If you seen all 9 Tarantino films than you know straight away he either references or literally borrows many techniques and scenes from many bad films. Kill Bill Volume 1 and Death Proof are both made because of his love for those seriously cheesy and way over the top 70's, 80's and 90's Asian martial arts Cinema as well the Grindhouse films of the 80's.
I like to say that enjoying certain bad movies creates character lol. Even though there is a lot of technique and artistic prowess, movies are still art and art is subjective. There may be a movie out there which is widely hated but ticks all the boxes for you.
For some weird reason I really love the movie "Never Back Down" because I watched it in a very specific time of my life where the movie clicked with me and now every time I watch it not only I get reminded of those times but I also get the same level of excitement that I did back then. I also really enjoyed The Unforgivable which is a recent movie that clicked with me even though it didn't click with most people.

That's true. I still think then, personally, people should be able to articulate why they like something and at least have some sorts of standards for things so that they're not just going into everything and not caring at all, but also people are satisfied with doing that I think it's much less harmful. My only issue with that sort of thing is that it leads to a slip in quality for everything else if everyone is that way, but I also think the people who tend to like everything are much less vitriolic and angry towards others than the people who hate everything.
I've noticed the people who actively cannot enjoy things also don't really have the capacity to let other people enjoy them a lot of the times. They go after the entire group of people who might like one thing, and not just going after their behavior like saying this fandom doesn't behave well or this group of people over here is not very nice, but they go after their personality and their interest and start hitting them with personal insults and all kinds of stuff. That's where I draw the line on either side but at least if you like everything you're not making the world insufferable for everyone else.

I think one reason people react this way to certain projects before they’re released is because these days the executives and even the actors will use woke political statements to promote the projects which may in turn cause preconceived biases in a lot of people. For example when the Eternals was promoted they kept highlighting how “diverse” ethnically it was instead of what actually made the movie worth watching as they tokenized most of the cast while basically promoting what might as well be called “Tokenism The Movie” and not to mention Brie Larson’s comments while promoting the Captain Marvel film. But I enjoyed your take on this as I do agree, elitism seems to be more common due to how much social media has changed our culture to the point of where simply not buying into a status quo or having a difference of opinion will cause people to go as far as assassinating your character.
It's also just really exhausting, I remember when I was younger I thought it would be cool if I hated everything. It's not fun and it feels so much better to just like things

I think there are certain levels of love and hate with medium, or middle ground levels to both sides.
I've seen things that I've wanted to like more but just couldn't and other stuff where I feel like they honestly tried their best but I just didn't care for it.

You have every right to be disappointed/sad/mad about something that did not impress you, but YOU shouldn't throw tantrums at people who've done nothing wrong to YOU. Mad at what Disney did with Star Wars? Mad that Saints Row 5 is being quote and quote "woke"? Maybe don't release all that hate on people who've done nothing to you and/or anyone. Stop it! Clearly, the internet and social media nowadays had outgrown hate culture and yeah, it's a very big problem mostly for those who actually enjoy what they're getting from their entertainment. It's very disappointing to see how game developers, authors and movie directors don't listen to their fans anymore because of them fighting over which opinion is better, over who's a fake fan and over obnoxiously spamming and begging sequels without appreciating the plot. It says a lot about the entertainment industry as a whole and why certain movies and video games either some get shelved and ignored by the higher-ups or get milked to death until it starts to show some cracks. But, that doesn't mean that all fandoms have toxicity and an inferiority complex to think that ruining people's joy from something they can't understand is a privilege, no it's not - it'll tarnish those trolls or bullies and also ruin the fandom's reputation for everyone both newcomer and mainstay believe that the fandom of their favourite movie, book or video game is toxic and it's not worth giving their time's worth because it looks like a madhouse in there, and might as well enjoy and express about it in our own comfort zone. Whenever someone's trying to trigger some drama, just leave them be and let them think they're always right and I think that's more appropriate than confronting them and giving them what they want.

Thanks for talking about this. I am so sick and tired of this attitude towards any film, TV show, video game whatever now. It's really horrible to see and just ugly.
I mean for example, whenever you have MCU Spider-Man being discussed online, there is always so much backlash around the fact that he is never always independent or that he's Iron-Boy or that Zendaya is not playing Mary-Jane but just a new character with the same initials as her. Just because the filmmakers decided to do something new with the Spider-Man mythos in the MCU doesn't automatically make it bad, maybe in future as they've left it open, they WILL introduce a new Mary-Jane, a new Gwen Stacy or a new Harry Osborne or Eddie Brock.
I certainly didn't mind it and I actually really enjoy the MCU version of Spider-Man and like all three of those movies with No Way Home being my favourite one.
I could think of a bunch more examples such as No Time To Die or The Last of Us 2 but I think you get my point. It's horrible.
I agree. I'll be the first person to tell you how much I hate entertainment being woke, but a lot of things people say are woke arent. Like the Boba Fett episode. People were saying its woke because the Tusken Raider Boba Fett lost to was female (gender does not matter and he was in terrible condition). People make up bullshit reasons as to something is "woke" and it creates and echo chamber. Don't get me wrong I hate when things are actually woke, but when something isnt woke and it is being labeled as woke, it pisses me off.

I love checking out gaming essay channels on youtube, but usually if I find a channel and all their videos are negative I'll unsubscribe. When I see channels like that I usually think that the person behind the channel is probably going through something and taking it out on media.
Also, 2020 and 2021 were shitty years and I'd rather watch more positive, I feel like negative content gets way more views on youtube because it creates more reactions (if you look at your most watched videos, you'll see 4 "Top 5 Worst x" before you see the first "Top 5 Best x").
Lately I found a few channels who are more wholesome which I really appreciate, like the "Cinema Wins" channel.

It's like people when people say Fortnite is bad, even though a lot of the people who say this haven't played the game for 2 years , or at all, and say these things just so that they can fit in with the people who generally dislike the game and who they *think* are the majority.

Funny thing is I'm one of those people who give movies a pass for the most part. Unless something is GLARINGLY "bad" then I'm usually good.
I usually advise people to look at / watch the movie or show like it's actually happening IRL. So if it's real, then the plot and character decisions can't be "bad" or "unbelievable" etc.
Some people IRL DO make poor choices, some things in life DO happen randomly and not as planned etc. So when it happens in a movie, that doesn't bother me.
Hating everything tells me that the person is just angry and bitter inside. They're lashing out to get "even" with life for dealing them a bad hand. They would be the type of person to spout off some drivel like "Why should I apologize for being a monster when life didn't care about turning me into one" lol. It's just sad and regressive.

I'll give you my 2 cents. In my opinion once an artistic project is out it doesn't matter what the creators say it is, it matters what the public says, since the artists may fail in realizing their ideas and the public might transform that project.
Here in my country a very popular director made a movie intending to criticize police brutality and added a lot of scenes where cops would kill criminals in cold blood. What ended up happening is that people started idolizing the main character because he killed criminals. So the ideal behind the movie fell flat for a lot of people.
I’ve never had a fear of a white character being replaced. I’ve just been disappointed when it does happen without reason. Like for instance got nothing against Miles Morales because although he is Spider-Man he’s not just black Peter, he’s his own character that puts a unique spin on it. But if you take characters like James Bond or Clark Kent and do that then that’s when I get disappointed.
I actually agree with that. And on the opposite end of this issue, I also think it's very disingenuous for people to call someone a racist every time they bring up this point as well. I see that a lot too. Where essentially you can't have an opinion on it, even if say someone was being tokenized or something not genuine, you have to just smile and wave otherwise you're considered racist. I don't like that extreme of this argument either. On either side there's an extreme that I think is incredibly unreasonable and almost comically out of touch.
But I think it's case by case basis for me. My issue with a lot of this stuff is that usually that's the whole pitch. Remember when they were pitching the whole new Superman Clark Kent project? The whole pitch was just what if he's Black?
To me, when you go right there for your pitch and you have nothing else, that's where I'm like okay we're just doing this for no reason there's no point to it. I know I'm a bit in the minority on this, but I think for example MJ in the new Spider-Man movies, I never really thought about how she wasn't white or a redhead because it was a different take on the character and I thought Zendaya was cast because she's a great actress who pulled it off and did a good job. It never felt to me like they were actively making a decision to replace anyone at all with that. But I've seen a lot of projects where they do, and where that is the entire pitch and there's no hard or soul behind it. It's not picking who's best for the job or who can play this character or who could liven up this movie and make it feel more organic and lifelike, it's just hey let's throw person x into the role or "What if we change this character trait of this character that they've had for 50 years in order to drum up controversy because we know it'll upset some people and other people will just find it to be inorganic and then we can paint them as bad people." I've been on the receiving the end of that as well like I said before with my opinions on Tim Drake currently in comics being written poorly and essentially being taken different character directions, several over the last 5 years including changing his superhero persona for a while to just Drake, and changing his interest in romantic partners, and breaking him up with Stephanie, etc, all of this I believe was done just to drum up publicity and try and make the character interesting instead of actually take him somewhere organic where he should go or grow the character over time. But people call me a lot of names for that still to this day and say that I dislike anybody in the LGBTQ no matter what I say at this point, so people have just decided that despite the whole point being I think it's poorly written and silly.

I absolutely agree with your point about people crying "woke" using it as a catch all term to explain how much they dislike it.
It annoys me to no end because I don't personally agree with woke ideology, but crying that every film involving a black character or a woman or a homosexual is automatically woke just cheapens the term and gives people a pass to consider anyone who criticises woke culture as a laughing stock.
For example, I dislike God of War 2018 and Ragnarok. I just can't stand them and massively prefer the original trilogy and PSP games. A relatively large TH-camr called Synthetic Man had a huge rant about Ragnarok being "woke" and now because of that, legitinate complaints I have about the new saga aren't taken very seriously, since I'm grouped with loons like him.

When it comes to matters of “taste,” like in food or music or movies, there are thing that, in the making of them, are objective. For example, whether a note is being played correctly is objective, or whether a fish is over or undercooked is objective. However, your experience of the final product is subjective. How much the flaws bother you is subjective. You can make the best fish in the world, and I’m still not gonna like it cause I don’t like fish. Even then, sometimes doing things considered “bad practice” can be used to good effect. Typically playing and E and an F together causes dissonance and is bad. But it depends on what the conductor is going for.
On a separate note, if there’s something my computer engineering degree has taught me, there’s no such thing as someone being smarter than someone else. They just know more about a subject you don’t know about. And you probably know more about a subject they don’t know about.

Can unity is underrated
There has to be diversity. I'm what's known as the "Local celebrity", dressing up as Batman and going around in the dead of night. While I have a lot of, admittedly controversial takes, a lot of which are considered negative, I'm pretty open about liking what I like too. I think this is where I found success - Being genuine. People like authenticity and humanity; humanity is a yin and yang. Example: I hate alcohol, and people wonder what's wrong with me but I love ginger ales and sodas. I don't judge someone for drinking, or smoking and on top of that too I don't like a lot of Marvel movies but I loved No Way Home and even defend it to some people who expect me to hate it. I loved the Alien vs Predator movies despite them being hated too. I always loved the Zack Snyder DC movies, and still defend them. I despised the new Matrix but - that's OK. Great video. It has come to a point where I can't take serious people who call things woke. It's like it stopped having meaning.
I agree somewhat but I think the woke argument holds weight with a lot of things and at least for me this is awful because I do like a lot of the franchises but a lot of them get hijacked by “creatives” who don’t really care about whatever franchise it may be, they just care about checking boxes which leads to a poor product overall especially when compared to what came before, I do think it gets blown out of proportion but it’s definitely there

While I do agree people are to negative and I agree but I don't agree that everything is fine majority of fiction right now. is either ruined be it Canon / lore is completely handled terribly marvel and DC and mk or alot of things gaming wise have legit issues that need to be discussed like the issue with micro transactions. but while I do dislike a good chunk of modern media I don't really care if people like them. I don't like any of the new star wars stuff after Disney took over or even newer marvel and DC comics but I don't bully others I respect their opinion but for me it's terrible. if anything everyone should just respect each other's views rather than hating each other over difference of opinions as bad or too positive.

@@1eyeddevil929 nah, have you seen the reaction when marvel revealed the next Spider-verse comics Spiderman would be gay? A bunch of people lost it for no reason. As far as trans storytelling goes, there's several cool trans characters in One Piece's Wano arc if you're interested
Look at TLOU2, before the leaks and the game came out, there were people claiming it was woke trash when the first trailer came out and showed Ellie kissing a girl (which anyone who played the Left Behind DLC for the first one would already know she was lesbian) and people were shitting bricks because it was “woke”
TLOU2 is actually woke for whole different reasons other than this
I have my own reasons for why I just like a lot of the last of us 2 But I just think in general before something's out if people have an opinion and they're unwilling to change it once the thing comes out if maybe it's different than they first perceived or they are unwilling to check it out at all because they saw one trailer shot or one thing they disagree with, that's where I kind of find it to be a little silly. I dislike a lot of the story elements of that game, but I also think that it was treated unfairly by certain people who decided it would be bad before it came out.
I still really really really dislike a certain thing that they did personally and it really frustrates me, but it's not something I knew about prior to the game coming out.
