RAM 1500 Unlocking Off-Road 4x4 Performance | How to Turn Your Traction Control ALL The Way Off

  • How to easily improve and unlock your off-road performance in your RAM 1500. the key is to FULLY turn off your traction control aka also turn off your Electrotonic Stability Control. This videos summarizes my own real world 4x4 testing and how fully turning off your traction control and your ESC can great improve your off-road performance.
    I've had this truck for 3 years now and was not aware about the ESC system so I figured a lot of you guys would know about this either. This ESC system is different then just your traction control system whereas the ESC takes your abs wheel speed sensors and many other driving inputs into consideration to decide what to do with the truck. the best example of this is when in 4wd lock with the rear wheels spinning at different speeds then the front wheels and the steering wheels turned. The ESC thinks the truck is in a spin out condition and will actively cut power to the front driveshaft. which is exactly what you don't want when you are stuck somewhere and the truck is actively cutting power to the front wheels.
    obviously the Electronic Stability Control has benefits like when you are actually in a spin out situation it can dramatically improve the results and maybe even keep you on the road. So before you go ripping out fuses realize its there in the first place to help you. BUT when already in a 4x4 situation this system will hold you back. so turning the ESC off will ensure you get as much power to the wheels as you possibly can.
    hope you guys liked the video!

    Just got a Ram 2020 Warlock. 2.5 level on 35x12.5r20. She is a beast and with the knowledge of ESC I can imagine how much more of a beast its going to be. I have installed totalflow exhaust as well and can feel signific torque gains. Looking forward to trying it out in our recent snow storm. I also have the LSD which is amazing at locking my rear tires when traction control is disabled. I was told if you press tow haul it also disables alot of the ecs and traction as well as adds low end power. Not sure if this is true but with the 392 dif ratio it certainly feels like a torque beast.

    For those of you who have a 2012/2013 ram with a specific software installed on the ecm you may not be able to do burnouts despite your buddies ram doing them just fine, the reason for this is because of your ABS/ESC cutting power to prevent wheel spin. An easy fix is to pull the fuse f26 because you can only turn ESC off in 4x4 which is no good for burnouts. So for the next car show just pull fuse f26. (Note that not all 2013 trucks worn burnout only specific trucks with specific softwares installed on them).

    Great video. I have a 2014 Ram 3500 with 6 speed manual. If I have it in 4x4 HI and turn off the traction control by holding the button for 4 seconds it will disable ESC as you say. But mine when I put it in 4x4 LOW it automatically turns off Traction Control and ESC with no need to press Traction control or hold Traction Control. Maybe different than the 1500.
    This is still good to know as I did not know of the 4x4 Hi trick. I also because of the 6 speed manual with a dual disc clutch and I tow a Toy Hauler I installed a harness which can disengage the front axle to give me 2 wheel LOW which is great for backing up with Toy Hauler and still turn steering from stop to stop.

    There’s a dude (up in Canada) that make a “lock switch” which will make the BW 44-44 “lock” and operate like the BW 44-45.
    That combined with ESC off and the truck performs pretty decent.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have also heard about something similar to that. I would probably greatly help. However, the clutch pack will always have some slip so the bw44-45 would still technically be a better transfer case but I doubt anybody could truly tell the difference at that point.

    • @danielrydza6024
      @danielrydza6024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGettyAdventures there might be but from what I’ve read the clamping force applied is something astronomically high and the clutch pack won’t slip unless the clutches are worn. Also, as info, the internals of the 44-44 are beefier per the folks at Rockland Standard Gear. They sell upgraded clutches (or at least they used too).
      Either way, like the channel man!

    The 44 series transfer case comes with auto but uses clutches to attach the front drive shaft. The 45 which doesn't have auto is a direct lock. But you can't be on dry hard surface or it'll bind and snap something

    Good video. I learned the hard way while knowing nothing about the ESC. While completely losing traction while trying to climb an icy hill, the wheels just STOPPED turning, or at least it felt like it. Consequently I did an uncontrolled slide smack back into a hardened ice berm and it crumpled my rear bumper and took out my left tail light. I thought WTF!? The wheels stopped turning? Yes they did, otherwise I would have made it no problem . That screw up cost me $1200 worth of parts and labor. $400 for an after market bumper and $700 worth of shipping to Alaska. That's right. If you want to move to Alaska, prepare to get bent over by FedEx and UPS. They are rape artists. Their cost to ship by air via a major airline is Approx. $290 for which they charge you $1500 or so, so I had to get raped by ground. Ugh. Live and learn.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I was super interested how my truck would handle 4x4 situations and I figured a lot folks would also be interested. It also depends on what kind of transfer case you have, on the Ram 1500's if you don't have the clutch pack transfer case (no 4WD AUTO option) your front driveshaft is always truly locked in and the truck can't stop power from going to the front driveshaft like it can with the clutch pack transfer case. So there is more then one variable at play lol

    Well to my understanding it's not cutting power from your front wheels because it thinks you're spinning out or losing control it's cutting power when you turn so you don't damage your four-wheel drive if you're using it on dry pavement and turning just a safety precaution for people so they don't damage their four-wheel drive.

    Hi, I have a 2013 1500. When I put 4WD low in says in the instrument cluster that the traction control is disengaged. Do I need to do it manually as you did??
    When I turn the wheels the front seem to lock up and do a shreeking sound and will not engage unless I straighten the wheels.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks for the video

      I believe in 4WD LOW the traction control system is automatically turned off. You may still have to manually turn off the ESC system.
      As for the shreeking sound are you trying to turn on dry pavement while in 4Low ?

      @@TheGettyAdventures no, never on pavement. Always on mud and rock. I use it every week going up to the ranch in the mountains. Very bad road.

      I would want the traction control off. that being said I'm not even sure if it is possible to leave the traction control on while the ESC system is off. If you had a good scan tool you maybe could mess around with the two system and see what happen.

    my ram 1500 classic 2020 jerks while its on 4wd lock when i had my steering wheel fully turned to the left or right. I have not tried this suggestion, but can u please let me know why it jerks? I am driving in a snowy condition that’s y i put it to that mode. otherwise, i am always at 2wd mode. I cannot see anything in the manual that explains that jerky attitude of the vehicle

    • @TheGettyAdventures

      do you have a 4wd auto option? if so, you may be experiencing some transfer case clutch slippage. Could also the truck disengaging and engaging the front driveshaft. could be bad CV axle. should be warranty on that truck. take it into the dealer and see what they say.

      @@Aeschbacher87 think about it like this bro all 4 wheels are locked in right ya feel me bro. You have to slow down to make a turn right bro. Your also slowing down even more when the turn is made that’s why it gets difficult your front tires are making the turn slowing the back ones down while your giving it gas spending the back ones up to straighten the front ones out tbh just keep a consistent speed and don’t do no u turns

  • @lifeinastockwrangler
    @lifeinastockwrangler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is you have the versiono of the truck where to transfer case has clutch packs connecting the front driveshaft to the transfer case. You can tell if you have this version because of the part time 4wd setting on the top left. The Upper models came with this for a auto 4wd conveinience. Even with everything turned off you still have clutches that are designed to slip. the transfer case in the cheaper ram models like mine, the ST have a regular mechanical gear connecting the front drive shaft.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      nailed it on the head sir! those clutches will always slip if there is too much pressure on the transfer case which is not good for off road situations lol

    Anyway to shut it off completely even in 2wd ?

      Traction control keeps coming on dealer says it’s because the speedometer is reading faster and when I corner it’s over compensated thinks it’s skidding out they are waiting for a program to adjust the speedo hopefully that fixes it

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@harlowkinney8206 Ya they are probably correct. the difference in wheel speed is exaggerated because of the larger wheels when cornering. If just turning off the traction control doesnt help then pull your abs/ traction control fuse.
