RAM 1500 Off-Road 4WD Lock Test In Deep Snow (I Was WRONG..) | Real World 4x4 review 2.0

  • This is my second RAM 1500 off-road 4WD LOCK test and I was lucky to have some deep snow for a great real world 4x4 review. I made a video last week showing how at times my front drive shaft didn't receive any power when my truck was in 4WD LOCK. I had heard rumbling about this issue on the old internet and I set out to see if this was true. specifically I tested if the wheels were turned power would be cut to the front driveshaft and those were the exact results I found. Long story short I didn't fully turn off my electric stability control and so after learning that I needed to re-test.
    So here we are and as you can see the results speak for themselves. With the ESC fully turned off I found in no situation that the front driveshaft didn't have power. So I was first off wrong about my previous video and happy that my truck is a little more capable then I had previously thought. I had lots of fun making this video and look forward to making more!
    Check out my first 4WD LOCK Test

      hahaha they are pretty awesome machines. they are designed to push snow up crazy steep slops. which is why the tracks are so wide, incase the snow cat start to slide down the hill side way it will never flip over. and obviously to help it float on top of the snow

    In 2005, I had a Ram w/5.7 HEMI & here in Michigan, I never once got stuck in any mud or snow, but when I left Chrysler in 2009 and went to Mississippi with my 2009 Rear wheel drive Ram, I got stuck in less than 2 inches of mud! It was a weird feeling being in that Truck, so before returning to Michigan in 2010, I sold my Ram, paid off my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and kept it instead. My 2002 Jeep is what I still drive today! Many things have changed, but I am still a MOPAR Guy!!!

      Just the way my truck was spec'd out. the outdoorsman Ram 1500's are much better equipped for off-road use. and the newer fifth gen trucks do finally have a locker option from factory. but I wouldn't be lying if I said my 96 GMC was more capable in the snow.

      Same way on most trucks with traction control. It’s great on the street but sometimes you need to spin the tires to get out of messy situations. My work uses mostly fords and they spend most of thei time off road in 4wheel drive. After struggling to get anywhere I seen in a owners manual that ford even tells you to turn it off because it won’t allow your front end to spin if your stuck

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kingrider75 very interesting that the manual tells you to do that. makes total sense though. also those fords usually come with those awesome rear E-lockers which make a big difference!

      @@TheGettyAdventures I agree, I had a 16 f150 and recently traded up to an F250 and both had the rear locker. I like the fact that it can be used without putting the truck into 4wheel, and in a lot of cases I have found that’s all I needed to get out of a situation. It’s especially useful on a slick boat ramp too

      Your video was somewhat informational, but you left out some MAJOR details (which “confused” the Hell out of me).
      1) Just after you were kicked out of the Parking lot you mentioned that you did two things: 1) That you disabled the ESC, and 2) That you turned off ANOTHER system/feature (but you NEVER mentioned [in detail] WHAT that secondary thing was (???).
      2) You also NEVER mentioned [Exactly/Precisely] what “Type” of Axle system your 1500 Ram truck had (???), as Ram either has (sells) a: 1) Electronic Locking Rear Axle, or 2) Anti-spin Differential Rear Axle system - So, WHICH ONE is installed on your truck?? (that you used?!?)
      PS/BTW - if you want to be a successful TH-camr (and, thus, better Increase your Subscriptions) then you had BETTER become MORE detailed, with the information.
      Maybe take a College class, on communications, and video Planning, etc. (I’m a college teacher, so I say this, from experience 👍)

I went up on my 2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel & had no issues with the ice & snow while traction control completely turned off & in 4WD lock. I understand. We once had a lady bring her Jeep into the shop complaining about it not going into 4WD. Typical male, i thought she didn't know how or was too weak to manually put it into gear. I tried to shift it, couldn't. So we put it up on the lift and as i tugged and cursed, another mechanic was hitting the shift linkage with a small maul, prying with a crowbar, spraying de-rust and lubricant and cursing like a sailor. We finally employed WD-40 along with the blue-tipped wrench ( had a fire extinghuisher right there ) and got her to finally break free. Really worked up a sweat ! Ran it in-out a dozen times along with over lubrication. She'd had the Jeep for several years and had never used the 4wd. Frozen as tight as Hogan's goat. Told her to use it at least several times a year and if it froze up again to come on back. Don't believe i charged her because i was chagrined it was the Jeep and not her. What's the old adage: Use it, or loose it ...

      @@georgemercado7160 that is the disadvantage of an open differential. really nothing you can do. the traction control does try to apply brake pressure to the free spinning wheel to force the other wheel to turn but that tends to not really work that well. you need a locking front differential for both front wheels to spin at the same time. and unfortunately the RAM 1500 trucks don't have a front diff lock option from factory so you'll be looking at an aftermarket unit.

    Where the problem comes in with the clutch plate transfer cases is when the rear has no traction and the front has all the traction, the plates get overloaded. Example is tie truck to tree with rear tires on ice and front on pavement. All the torque will be put onto the clutches for front drive and you will smoke the clutches. They are fine as long as you know the limits and don’t go mashing the throttle for long periods when stuck in mud. Periodically stop and let them cool.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the clutch pack system has it's limitations. I feel like a lot of folks don't understand that with a clutch pack system there is always going to be some slippage, especially when there is high torque loads like in a stuck situation.
      That being said, I also think 95% of people are going to be just fine with the clutch pack transfer case with the limited off-road use they do. But I just find the difference in off-road performance between the two transfer case options interesting.

    • @sw5334
      @sw5334 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGettyAdventures Your right, they are fine for the majority of people. I know how hard it is explaining to girlfriends who drive my RAM 3500 Dually that when on dry or tight turning in a parking lot to put it back in 2WD when you feel the drivetrain wind up and start bucking. Most of the time they just mash the throttle and use the cummins. LOL. Even when I'm driving I am constantly back and forth with the transfer case. I sometimes wish they could put an auto system that can handle the torque of the big diesels in the HD trucks. Good job on the videos, nice to see more of us Canadians making them. Keep it up.

    That lock is shyt because actually does not do the job of locked the four wheels, so if you get stock, how is going to help you to get out the locked axles if just 3 or 2 wheels spinning?

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So the term 4WD LOCK is pretty deceptive to begin with because is doesn't mean that all 4 wheels are locked into the drivetrain. it means that the truck is "locked" in 4wd meaning there is power going to both the rear axle and front axle. now if you have two open differentials, both front and rear like I do only 2 of the 4 wheels will be receiving the majority of the power. if I had a locking rear differential 3 of the wheels would be getting power (1 front wheel and 2 rear wheels). If I had both a front and rear locker all 4 wheels would receive power (2 front and 2 rear). so in these trucks 4wd LOCK basically just refers to the transfer case locking the front driveshaft to the rest of the powertrain and nothing else. if that makes sense lol

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mctrician2 Exactly. I would need my transfer case locked as well as both front and rear differentials locked (which I don't have) to truly have power at all 4 wheels.

      Well no 4wd is going to do well in most snow conditions no matter what. Having good tires is also important.
      do you have the 4wd auto option?

      @@joseromero1400 ya it does! you have the Bw44-44 transfer case. just means It's not as good off-road but for the odd snowstorm you'll be absolutely fine. if you find yourself in deep snow, make sure you turn off your ESC system and the truck will perform pretty well.
      if you have a rear limited slip diff option on your truck you'll be laughing.
