Always love the history of game systems. That was interesting. I don't know a lot about neo Geo but I know it's got good fighting games. I did find a neo geo CD just haven't messed with it yet. The memory card thing was pretty neat. Great video
I got into Neo-Geo when they hit the arcades with the MVS system. Just so many great games and quarters lost. hehe. The CD system is cool, I'd like to see it one day on your channel. I've never played with one in person, I'd love to know if the load times are really that bad, or about the same as the Saturn and PS1. The AES system on the other hand I have played on, and it's awesome, just like the arcade. The memory card thing is very unique to Neo Geo. I can't think of any other company that did that.
One of my best friend dad sadly died and left him some money. He bought a neo geo with 2 games magician lord and fatal fury. We were so fortunate. What a machine. He still has it with 70 percent collection.❤
As a kid in the early 90s I recall going to toys r us to look through the big video isle. All the games were displayed as a flip card with the front cover on one side and the back on the other and then you would grab a paper slip to take to the front to get your game. Used to spend a long time flipping over those card. The holy grail though was a display case at the end that held the neo geo stuff. It was mythical, something no kid could ever actually get.
Lol. Yeah you're definitely right. It was like the one system that we just could not get. I remember I asked my parents for it. That didn't go too far when they saw the price. But I did end up getting the Sega tower of power so I guess it worked out in the end. Thanks for sharing and watching!!
I vaguely recall the consoles when they released but never saw one except maybe at Toys R Us, definitely loved SNK in the arcade though. Their art style was super distinct and still holds up as some of the best sprite work ever. I picked up a NGPC when those first came out too and it was insanely underrated and cheap too! Dark Arms alone is a forgotten masterpiece. Wish Neo Geo could have held out longer, losing them and Sega back to back was rough times. And I totally forgot that Crystalis was SNK! That was one of my favorite NES games at the time and absolutely worth a revisit.
I remember seeing it at toys r us too. I was thinking of putting the pocket in this episode, but it really should have its own video. One day I might do a video just on the history of handhelds, the NGPC, Nomad, Lynx, etc.. I think SNK/NG's art derives back to the early days with the micon kit and battle ship Yamato, they always have had that anime look to their characters. Yeah losing both Neo-Geo and Sega was a huge blow.
This thing was Crazy Expensive, and Add it to the List My Rich Neighbors Had I Just Had a Riot whenever we collected enough Book-It Coupons for the Family to eat on the Cheap I'd scour the house for all the Quarters I could find to play the SNK Cabinet stuck in the corner! Bust-a-Move was Always a Favorite: Once I started playing with Linux FROZEN-BUBBLE has always become an Instant Install to this Day
Yeah it was expensive. Crazy expensive. I remember we live d by a military base and there was a Little Caesars Pizza that had an SNK MVS cabinet. I'd ride my bike down there just to play the cabinet. It was just a two-game cab, but the owner switched out games every week to different ones. It was pretty cool to always have different games to enjoy. That cabinet introduced me to most of the neo Geo characters.
I had one friend who had a Neo-Geo when I was young. He wasn't rich, quite the opposite, he was the poorest kid I knew. His grandmother bought him the Neo-Geo because she thought he deserved the best. Maybe he did, but that thing was a terrible waste of money in 1990.. I don't think he ever got another game for it, certainly only ever had one controller.. tough to watch someone get their ass kicked on Baseball Stars, over and over. 😂
Man, that must have sucked. Unfortunately, sounds like your friend wasn't well off as far as money goes and to have the most expensive system with probably the most expensive games of the time. Yeah that wouldn't have worked out very well. Your baseball stars comment made me laugh bro. I can picture it now.
I remember going to a Funco land store and they had a brand new Neo Geo for sale. It was $600 and came with a game of your choice. This is in 1991. Six hundred dollars was a crazy amount for a game console then. But the Neo Geo was literally bringing the arcade into your home. The games were expensive too $250 per game. The Neo Geo game carts were huge. And it came with 2 arcade sticks. The neo geo blew away the snes and Genesis. But was way too expensive for most people.
There is really a lot you are skipping over here. There was about a 5 year period where NeoGeo was simply the best you could buy. Nothing even came close in terms of sprite size, scaling and number of colors on screen. Plus, SNK had a rather distinct art style. Sound was very good too. Its voice feature was fairly unique. Though you could get NeoGeo quality sound off a CD, that was usually just music and you'd need the sound chip for effects or voice. It was hard to set up the music so that it was triggered by in-game stuff. Despite having such a great voice system, they wisely chose not to abuse it with endless dumb speaking in the games, keeping it mostly sparse. Though I had a Neo Geo at one time, it was just way too much money. The games were too much money too.
Man, so you were one of the lucky ones that had one. I would have been coming over to your house all the time just to play it. Quite honestly to this day, I've only played the Neo Geo AES a handful of times, usually at retro video game stores. Man, I could have literally gone on for probably an hour about SNK and the Neo Geo hardware, also the games and characters. You're absolutely right man. It was the best of the best that you could get in the early '90s. It literally made all the other systems look like toys. I haven't really been diving into the technical aspects of the systems in my lookouts lately. According to my statistics, that's when people would start dropping off the video. I guess talking about all the good stuff inside is boring to people. But the people that are in the know like you and I love that kind of stuff. I might end up doing another series other than a look at's, I don't know what I would call it but it would just go over all the electronics inside these systems.
@@RetrogamerGenX I don't recall, but do you run ads on your videos? Cause that might have something to do with it. My blocker stopped working a couple weeks ago. 1/2 the ads are scams or for stuff I will not use. Many of the legitimate ones are so grating and obnoxious that I just click away from the video. I found out one of my fav channels runs an ad every 5 minutes on a 60 minute video. For those, I switch over to a portable device which thankfully does not show ads. I got laid off in the early 2000s and I cut the dish network to save money and just never got it back again. For many years I never even once sat down in front of network TV again. I guess I got habituated to ads as a kid. They grate on me on so hard now. I simply cannot watch them. It's worse than nails on a chalkboard. I don't know how anyone suffers through them. The problem with the NeoGeo in addition to the price was the lack of variety. They really started honing in on shooters and fighters and neglected most other genres. I have a GP2X and an Ambernic r350 which play the neogeo quite well and so when I'm in the mood for NeoGeo, I use them.
Nice video, but that's not the whole story. The system, both AES and MVS, still got official game releases up until 2004, with Samurai Shodown V Special being the last game released for it, and the company offered maintenance and repairs to all of their systems up until 2007, giving the Neo Geo system a full 17 years of support since it's release in 1990.
Very true. In fact I did have their continued support and game development in the script, but it hit the cutting room floor. I should have left it in. My bad.

I'd just have to find the common games

Sorry for his loss, but awesome that he was able to buy one and still has it with a good sized collection!! Thanks for sharing.

Right! The AES was like the holy grail of gaming consoles. The people that had one back then were very lucky, or rich, or both. lol
