I did, with Kung Fu Master, and it was awesome. I had a N.E.S. the following year, but the 2600 still gets played today, whereas the N.E.S. got jogged on years ago.
9:23 The VCS (as it was then known) was not a big seller either in the beginning, though I think it did slightly outsell the Fairchild in 1977. It was Atari who did an immediate redesign to cut costs. The early 2600s were made in the USA in Sunnyvale, CA. So they started making them in Taiwan (IIRC). One of the first changes they made to the system was to massively cost-cut the joysticks. The earliest Sunnyvale made joysticks are much higher quality and a different design inside. But they made other changes besides. They also eventually got rid of the pot metal shielding and they integrated 2 circuit boards down into 1 (earlier 2600s were made with 2 boards. one is behind the switches and the other is the main board connected by a ribbon cable).
Yeah it really wasn't until space invaders came out on the "VCS" that it took off. The first killer app. lol Yes sir, all cost cutting measures that Warner did to ensure the most profit.
@@RetrogamerGenX Cost cutting is fine, if they can cut the cost without ruining quality or functionality. Like if they can combine 4 support chips into a single chip and simplify the board and reduce component cost, that's great. It doesn't negatively affect the product. Sadly, they usually throw quality out the window the minute something is popular. They do this a lot with food. They'll invent some new snack or something and it catches on. But rather than just riding the wave, they have to be greedy and start swapping ingredients. Like it maybe it had Vanilla Extract in it. But then once it is a big success, they put the imitation stuff in it. I heard the ice cream brands are all doing this.
@@RetrogamerGenXcost cutting on the Atari was INSANE. It was a miracle that console could even manage games more intense than breakout, that being a stretch itself.
The memories. The Intellivision was my first video gaming experience when I played it at my uncle's house. The 2600 was the first console I ever owned because my family found one at a tag sale. I also tried the 5200 once at a friend's house. The 2600 had great games like Solaris, but I preferred Intellivision because the graphics and music were superior overall. I actually liked the 5200 but I get why it didn't sell well. I'm so happy that the homebrew community keeps these systems alive and makes new games for them. I particularly love what they're doing with the Intellivision, with games like Anthropomorphic Force and the port of Dragon Warrior. Another amazing vid! Please keep em coming! Happy Holidays!!
I was kinda like that. We had the 2600, but a friend had the Colecovision and I was blown away by it. I love the homebrew scene. There have been so many great games made in the last 10 or so years for most of these systems, bringing new life to them. Thanks man, I dropped the 3rd gen video yesterday, 4th gen is coming soon. Happy Holidays too you too!!
I have a Channel F and an Odyssey 2. The Channel F is starting to scare me, getting brittle, lol. I leave them in their box. 5200 was my first console. Awesome history video!
Thanks, I love sharing the history of these retro consoles. I feel the same way with my Atari Pong consoles. They are getting super brittle over the years. Almost too scared to open the bottom cover to put batteries in them now. The 5200 would have been a cool 1st console, showing up all the people with the 2600. Lol.
@RetrogamerGenX yea, the 5200 was definitely my first taste at "console wars" but "dead system" wasn't really a term back then. I understand now why there was bins of cheap games 🤣 sadly I'm down to my last semi-working official controller
Never had the chance to experiment with those consoles. Before I got a Nintendo 8-bit, I had the Tandy Color Computer 1 & 3. I bought cartridges, for the Coco 3, at Radio Shack. I remember the games Rampage and Robocop, at the end of Robocop "Thank you for your cooperation" with a low audio quality voice 😂 There were programs codes for games in magazines/books. With the dumb Basic interface, it could be long typing all the codes.
14:06 “… with the help of Miner.” Who’s that? Did I miss something up to that point? Was Miner a minor player in the story? Maybe just a sidekick of the engineers? One of their friends? Y’Know… their Amigo? 🤣
43:12 … “far beating Atari…” in regards to graphics. Well, 2600/VCS .. sure. Even Intellivision could do that. And I grant you that the CV beat the InTv. But the 5200? That’s a closer call and subjective. To wit, as great as the C= VIC-II chip was, some games looked better on Ataris with the GTIA and Antic. I leave it to the individual to decide which games, where such were available on both 5200 and CV, looked better. I had both systems. And I have no definitive answer. I loved my 5200 and bought it with every penny I had saved as a kid. The CV showed up later even though I didn’t ask for it. And I enjoyed it too. But neither beat the other. Donkey Kong? Only on the CV. Mario Bros. ? Only on the CV. Parker Brothers published games for both, but Frogger is Frogger and you’d have to screw up badly to make you want to say “I wish I had the other system.” I had the original four port 5200 so the 2600 adapter didn’t work unless we took it to the shop for surgery this Coleco’s expansion module 1 was how I played my backlog of 2600 games. And even there the only game I had for the 2600 that I had for the newer better consoles was Pac-Man and then only because it was a Pack-In (having replaced super breakout which I already had on 2600 and it didn’t need an upgrade but obviously “Pac-Man” for the 2600 sure did!
I might have mentioned it on your channel before, but I really don't think game systems like the 2600 and the Intellivision and Colecovision belong in the same generation. Both Intellivision and Colecovision have more in common with the NES and other 3rd generations than consoles like the 2600. Really, the whole scheme makes very little sense.
🤣When you said that I said yep. We both agreed. I believe more in era's then generations. But to stick to naming norms, I made this years by generation. 🥲
Nice deep compilation! It is slightly distracting every time you say inter-gated instead of inte-grated though. Don't worry, I won't go nucular on ya over it, I'm not that pendantic.
Thanks.. lol Yeah, if people would realize English is not my first language. I'm German. But youtube is what it is... But thanks for understanding brother.
I feel sorry for Lawson. Every February (black history month) I have to hear the lie that Jerry Lawson invented the video game console or the cartridge, his name then gets dragged, unfairly, into the mud. He was a competent project manager, but that is what he was. So every year when they start claiming we was kings video-game-edition (they claim this for almost everything, not just video games), other people have to come out and correct the lie.
I got into a pretty heated debate once with someone about that. Yes he was an excellent project manager, and could pull together a team of amazing people. He did help with the conversion from Intel's to Fairchild's chip. But no, he did not create the cartridge.
Your B-roll sucks. I wish you would use better more appropriate clips. Better yet, use your own clips and not these ridiculous generic b-roll totally unrelated to anything clips. Frankly, I would MUCH rather just see you speaking, rather than these clownish b-roll clips. I mean this constructively and not as a criticism of you. I just can't stand these stupid clips which I see the same clips in a wide variety of videos.
Nah man your good. 🤣🤣Out of any of my subs I know you will give your honest opinion man. Sometime a little harshly... 😠 But it's all for the better good. Dude I'd agree, these stock cw free video clips suck. I guess you just want to see more of my ugly face.. 😂
Too bad once the nes came out in 1985, not only were all those consoles history but pretty much forgotten🥲 It’s only that the atari 2600 is still well known today.
Yeah that’s very sad because the 7800 is my favorite of the retro game era. What other companies got right that Atari got wrong was their gamepad format. Joysticks are cool but they are limiting in the evolution of gaming. And in general, until the jaguar, Atari only had joysticks and paddles. I wished Atari would have kept going.
Right, that's why I make these. So they are not forgotten and new generations of people can learn about these awesome consoles that were the stepping stones to what we game on now.
Well the folks that bought Atari now are doing a great job. They are back, in some capacity with the 2600+, 7800+, new games and controllers. Including the Atari 7800 gamepad that was only released in Europe in the 80's. As far as Atari becoming a next Gen console maker, I doubt that will ever happen again. But one can only dream...
Imagine getting an atari jr in 92 for Christmas 😂
Yeah that would have sucked. 🤣
