I'm in my 50s, and we had a home Pong clone when I was very young, but I don't know which one it was. The first console I remember well was the Intellivision, a second-gen console.
20:12 what with this new technology and home product, I love how Coleco didn't notice that the game was not being played as intended at the beginning of this commercial. The left player just scored a point for the opponent. 😂
My family first had a Colecovision. I’m not sure how old I was but it must have been quite young. I do remember it well though. But it gotten forgotten about once we got a NES.
Most of these game systems did just that, then ended up in closets and attics. I'm pretty sure that's why there was such an influx of early game systems in the early 2000's. Lots of garage sales, and estate sales as the older people moved or passed away. It's a shame the retro game collecting market has went full crazy $$$ now. But every now and again, you can still find one of those estate or garage sale deals.
The clip of the Magnavox prototype test play is really neat. I also found it neat that my home town of Grand rapids, MI was chosen for play test alongside LA, On the first home gaming console at that. A bit of G.R. history I was not aware of. Great vid
The old ads are endlessly fascinating. Here in the UK, my dad bought us a Pong clone, perhaps the Binatone one, and that was the start of an epic gaming journey for me which still continues now! (ps where is that amusing 'game over' sample from?)
Same here I was born in 79 and had older brothers so I was pretty much born with a joystick in my hands lol. But yeah same as you I missed the first Gen so this was great!
Brilliant. Ralph Baer German American who fought for the US in WW2. A visionary and as all visionary's his greatest gift was to keep pushing for the adoption of the technology.
Thanks. Good luck fixing the video pinball. Yeah it's truly funny. If things would have changed just a little bit back then how things would change dramatically nowadays as far as history goes.
Back in the day there was an article in one of the electronics magazines that showed you how to mod that speak n spell into a speech synthesizer for your computer.
@@RetrogamerGenX yeah it looked good the article is online somewhere and some photos. I have a stockpile of speak n xxxx’s from the early 2000’s when I was all into circuit bending.
The Channel F and Astrocade are what's considered 2nd Gen consoles. They both are controlled by a microprocessor, and have interchangeable programable game cartridges. While first Gen consoles were DTL, TTL logic or pong on a chip, and were dedicated consoles. Meaning you couldn't swap out games. I released my 2nd Gen video yesterday. The channel f and Astrocade are on that one if you want to check them out.
Although you spend a lot of time talking about Nintendo, only few time is spent talking about the video game console of the 1st generation. I have never seen these games, it would have been interesting to see what those different games looked like.
Sorry about that brother. But really once you've seen one Pong colorized version you've seen them all. For history and gameplay I have my "A look At" series, but since I don't own a color TV game I've yet to do one for it. Stay tuned, once I get one, I'll post gameplay of it.

WoooW i didn’t know the prototype magnocox odyssey was actually digital as opposed to the retail version wich is fully analogue.
Great video!
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks. I thought having that clip in the video brings shows his excitement for the game he created. That's cool, a little piece of GR history for ya.

Nice, I started off with Atari Pong, it's been a journey for sure. It's from an Amiga Alien soundboard that someone made like 30 some odd years ago.
Really enjoying these friendo, excellent stuff.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment.
I started gaming with the second generation of consoles, so it’s nice to see such a detailed vid about the generation I missed :)
Thanks. I caught the very end of it. Then we got the Atari 2600.
Same here I was born in 79 and had older brothers so I was pretty much born with a joystick in my hands lol. But yeah same as you I missed the first Gen so this was great!
Excellent video and information. Very cool. Subscribed man.
Thanks brother. Welcome, lots of retro gaming videos to come.

He made so many things, from the Odyssey to Simon, what a brilliant mind.
I need to fix the Atari pinball I found still lol. History is just fantastic on why systems made or didn't make it and just in general. Amazing

$99.00 in early 1970s was over $700 in today's dollar.🤯
Crazy right!!

That would have been cool. Doing a little ET type engineering on the Speak & Spell.👍

What about Fairchild channel f and Bally astrocade? Those should have been included

"Syzygy was already taken by another company" ... Only in the 70s man 😅
Right!! 🤣🤣

Ted DABney not DANBey
Yep, I still forgot to change that from last year. Well there always next year.😉
@@RetrogamerGenX haha. Not that it matters 😆
