At 0:19 I expected a completely normal ship to show up, I saw the birds and figured it was a literal air-ship
but then once it came all the way up and I heard "meow!" I jumped in surprise, and then that's when I realized what sort of wackiness I was in for, haha

We need a new Parodious in 2.5D
3D compositing would be cool, but I wouldn't 3D model the sprites in this scenario. I am partial to HD (2000 X 2000) 2D sprites and nicely shaded with a high frame rate. It seems nearly all charm is dead when games depart from an illustrative light-hearted approach to fun designs like in Parodius. Pixar need not apply.
2D sprites in a 3D environment could be good
The processing of HD HQ Sprites is more difficult than detailed 3D models for a PC/console, but as in old games like RAKUGAKI SHOWTIME (PS1) or Dragon Force (SEGA SATURN), It can work really well.

That's more a gradius trope; that the absolutely final boss is basically helpless in most games. GETTING to said final boss is the hard part.

I must admit: in the beginning I couldn't understand why of the existence of these titles, but now... I dunno, it's like knowing its origins and meaning makes me accept it, even for its apparent bad taste.
The taste really isn't so much bad as it is just crazy weird. It's a parodious Gradius clone, so of course they went literally all over the place with it in an effort to poke fun at Gradius's stoic use of outer space and spaceships. Plus, it's Japanese. ...Which is a stereotypical and overused explanation for this kind of weirdness, but I think it does the job here.
The name “Parodius” really should’ve tipped you off.
