That i5-2540M a damn good dual core CPU (4 threads). In a lot of good benchmarks (such as Geekbench 6), the i5-2540M actually beats a lot of early intel quad core i5 such as the core i5-750 and even quad core hyperthereaded CPU's like the core i7-2920XM. Especially in Debian Linux, where it absolutely punishes core i5's and i7's running Windows 10, for example.
RAM 3GB: the bottom slot is 1GB DDR2-667. top slot - 2GB DDR2-667, DDR2-800. To make the laptop work as fast as possible, instead of HDD, install an SSD 250-480GB, sata-lll, 2.5". Divide the SSD into two partitions: drive C (80-100GB) and drive D (150-350GB). For weak processors, it is better to use Windows 7 x64.
try with core 2 duo , core 2 quad, and core 2 extreme series. And not supported for core i3, i5, i7. becuz its socket 478. I had one with celeron 900 to core 2 duo t6400
