Whether it's worth it or not depends on what you are hoping for. One thing to keep in mind is that if you switch from an i5-3230m to an i7-3632qm, you're going from 2c/4t to 4c/8t, but you're also lowering the base frequency from 2.6 to 2.2 GHz. The 3632qm is designed to fit into a 35W TDP envelope and has to be clocked lower to meet it. Workloads using 1-4 threads will take a hit. You have to get to five or more threads to benefit. And where gaming is concerned, you're only going as fast as that GPU can benefit from added CPU power in any case. I actually did something very similar with an HP ProBook 4540s last year, replacing an i5-3210m with an i7-3720qm, a 45W 4c/8t CPU with a 2.6/3.3 speed. The 4540s never shipped with that CPU but is known to be able to handle it. I have a Radeon HD 7650M GPU onboard. However, I am also running Linux and more interested in multithread performance and not gaming. For me, the upgrade was a tremendous success and makes this machine nearly as capable, relative to time and place, as when it was new. If I were running Windows and wanting to game, I wouldn't have done this, especially since the Ivy Bridge CPUs can't run Windows 11 without hacking.

Something to consider if possible for the GPU is using MSI afterbuner to overclock and specially undervolt the GPU, i personally had some luck with the desktop GT 740 back in the day, and squeezed some extra performance without risking anything, the same with some other laptops i had the luck to tinker with, not always possible, but always worth a check. Something else to consider, is that W10 is quite heavy, specially in these older systems, would recommend a lightweight Linux distro, like Mint or Arch with KDE Plasma, that or roll back to W7, the intended OS for many of these old computers.
I'm still rocking a MacBook Pro powered by an i5 3230M and find it fast enough for my coding and music stuff (Ableton Live 11 Lite runs like a charm). I certainly wouldn't game on it, but for ny developer and music workloads it's decent. I certainly recommend an SSD upgrade, makes all the difference in terms of the responsiveness of a machine
Whether it's worth it to upgrade the CPU probably depends on the price for which one can get a faster replacement. I was thinking about replacing the CPU in my old Dell Latitude that I use as a secondary PC and reconsidered after seeing that the top range CPU for it was selling used for almost as much as I paid for the laptop.

I have a Fujitsu LifeBook laptop too. Need to get it running so I can use it! Thank you 🤓 my regular laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P875 - S7200. Also has a duo - core i5 but can be upgraded to a Quad core! There is also a bay for a second drive, the HDD could be upgraded to an SSD. The RAM is already at 16GB but could do a little better with a better name brand of RAM. As a kind of hobby I look for electronics in dumpsters and curbside stuff!
Me too, I love searching for electronics in dumpsters. I am very surprised to find fully working consoles, monitors from time to time.
@@hardwarerepair200 my recent find is a PS 3 (found a PS 4 Slim 1TB HDD some time ago) that's the 3rd PS 3 I have found. Wanted to look some yesterday but raining too much
I upgraded an old Laptop with an i5, 8GB of ram and an SSD. That was much better than the old Celeron, 4GB and 5400rpm hard drive. I'd say upgrading is usually worth it if you don't want to game on these.
Which old laptop is this?
Have done this to a old Dell E6430 from the lowest possible i5 to the fastest i7 that works. Also put a samsung ssd in it and a 16GB memory kit. It's no gaming monster but all other tasks are running very well in 2024. And if i game on it i stream the game with Nvidia Geforce Now.
Had Fujitsu NH 532 with same GPU GT 640M LE (Kepler 500/900). I modified GPU core and mem to 1000/950 with Nvidia Inspector to get best stable performance.
Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know Nvidia Inspector. It looks interesting and will definitely give it a try.
I only do it for the fun of it; just knowing that I've made the device perform as well as it ever could. Only a handful of the ones I have would be able to run Windows 10 decently; and ironically the best one I have is a Elitebook 2560p that has a non replaceable cpu.
One day I'll get to benchmarking games and other software on them.
The GT 640m is way faster than my k600 overclocked
i upgraded an Emachines amd laptop.. it was a 1.6 ghz single core athlon. staying with in the laptops advertised power limit i opted for a athlon 64x2 @ 1.2 ghz.. while slower at 1.2ghz the second core helps it out . and upping it to 4gb ddr2 from its 2gb also helped at least it plays youtube videos now. if only its gpu was modular but no its onboard ati x1200 so its a great little old school lappy.
altho 1 prob is the emachines craptop laptops limitied bios shows the cpu as ???????? lol but cpuz shows its working fine.
now is 2024, im still using my W540 that i bought back then in 2014, with i7 4800MQ, 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD, of course with windows 10 pro, to be honest, this is the best 2700$ that ive spent.
Old laptops are built to last!
my W540 used to heat up instantly. 70c even when playing a FHD youtube video i sold it but that 3K screen was the best thing i ever seen
Not a waste of money, not a peice of junk .

Old MacBooks are amazing! You can upgrade your RAM and SSD easily. New MacBooks become useless when your SSD dies, which is ridiculous to me.
Whether it's worth it to upgrade the CPU probably depends on the price for which one can get a faster replacement. I was thinking about replacing the CPU in my old Dell Latitude that I use as a secondary PC and reconsidered after seeing that the top range CPU for it was selling used for almost as much as I paid for the laptop.

it is good the upgrade..only not for gaming..the gt 640m is not a gaming gpu..for web browsing..youtube etc its usable
That's sad to know...
Worth it? Maybe not. But, It's fun isn't it? Recently I was upgrading my Thinkpad T430, and had a lot of fun that day.
Agreed!
Is it worth replacing the CPU? No
What can you do? Add maximum memory as supported by motherboard and an SSD then the laptop will be as good as it will ever be.
Oh yes, the GT 640... in this case it's the absolute worst GT 640 LE. There's very little that can save it.
Older games work of course but anything after around 2015 is pretty painful.
you mightve been using the intel gpu, laptops can switch from internal to dedicated gpu
Could have swapped the ram to higher capacity and speed and ssd?!
That's true! Will upgrade it further when I have the chance!

where is the part 4 of ps3 ?? i need in my desk now🥲
I am still trying to find a suitable place to setup my equipment. PS3 requires a larger setup and more space.
Currently, I can only find shared space to do simple repair.
I just set world records for the 3770K in time spy @4,298 and fire strike @12,133 this morning! I was honestly just trying to stress test my 4.7ghz OC, but I guess I must have done something right!

Ive got it installed on a 4th gen but 24h2 will attempt to stop it... Nope I wont let it. If one day my computers will not boot im calling a lawyer. Maybe we should all start something.... I mean my god my Alienware 6th gen is amazing to this day, but they want it in the landfill and make us buy new... Im in no way throwing away a 1800$ dollar laptop when new... Get a life Microsoft....
The i7 runs hotter and you are having throttling issues.
That's indeed one of my concerns. I have been wondering if the i7 version of this laptop has a better heat sink than the i5 version.
But the i7 version the laptop is quite difficult to find these days, so I can't confirm it.
