I'm still hoping they add better sound for landings. When a huge space ship lands on a planet I'd expect there to be large clunks and creaks as the hull bears the weight. Especially a ship that weighs as much as a real life container ship. Currently all ships feel a bit weightless in regards to gravity.

    • @BadTactics101
      @BadTactics101 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Which ship in SC are you referring to? An average container ship weighs 165000 tons. The heaviest ship currently in SC is the 890j at 44000 tons, at nearly a quarter of that.

Just shown towards the end(8.22) was a hovering/landing Corsair and all you could hear was the landing gear moving, can't even see any thrust at all. Take-offs especially for me lack any excitement, almost zero rocket flair and minimal audio; make ships never look like they're actually flying, just floating cameras. Hopefully this will improve things going forward.

Love the idea that everything within the ship is going to creak and groan with every little impact, thruster movement, and even quantum spool. Sound is the binding glue that marries different gameplay elements together such as combat, where knowing where fire is coming from or how damaged elements of the ship are just from sound alone. More over I'm loving these reworked ship ambiences that draws attention to individual stations and component housing. Time to start working on my 10 hour sleep aid videos of Hammerhead engineering bay ambiences.

I want ambient sounds outside the ship while it is landed, like hissing of exhaust vents or the look and sound of liquid nitrogen coarsing through external tubes while the engines ramp down or up depending on the state of the ship, would just add that sense it is a living and breathing machine even when not flying and just sitting on the launch pad preparing for takeoff or just after setting down.

I hope that sound physics are added in the future so that there are proper sound delays according to the speed of sound. Ever since such a casual game like COD seemed to even implement it, it now sounds weird to me when I hear an explosion a kilometer away instantly. I understand how it may be confusing to some people at first but I think they’ll understand what is happening pretty fast and learn to appreciate it. I mean, that is how it is in real life after all.

audio teams aren't making ships, they aren't making gameplay mechanics, they aren't creating missions, etc. etc. They aren't impeding progress at all, they're doing what they're supposed to do. Your logic is like saying a painter should be able to help a sculptor make a statue...they may both be artists but the skillsets do NOT transfer. Same for programmers and graphical design, you can't have a ship designer try to work in server architecture, and vice versa...they'd have no idea what they would be doing.

It's the sound that the background or a hallway makes that causes it to feel more alive. The whistling of escaping gas, or the sound of the spraying fog from somewhere are all things that will affect the feel the sound causes and that adds to the alive feeling. A ship in space might creak as it moves, there might be dampened sound of guns and engines too, the crackling of a fire and a rumbling of the engines might all be heard and there is even more ambient sounds that will add to the alive feeling you might get.

Dear Audio team, please read my message. Please!
As a former DoP, I know very well that audio is at least half of the experience, if not more. That's why I love the work you've presented in this episode! 👍
But I unfortunately also suffer from vestibular migraines, which is why I have the following problem:
Especially high frequency buzzing like here in the video at 1:55 or even more extreme at 2:24 and 2:33 cause me (and other migraine sufferers) very fast severe headaches up to dizziness attacks.
Therefore, I ask you to either turn these sounds as quiet as possible or to include an option to adjust the volume or deactivate them.
Otherwise it will be impossible for me and others to play the game that we have been supporting for so many years.
By the way, I have the same problem in the server rooms of the bunkers. Having worked in data centers for several years, I also know that server rooms don't really sound like that. You don't really hear any electrical buzzing or beeping, but mainly the hissing of the ventilation 😉
I know that electrical devices and especially computers in movies are always accompanied by such or similar sounds (e.g. the typical sound when text appears on screens, although everyone knows that text / code is actually displayed silently in reality), but that doesn't mean that you have to do it that way in games, does it? 🙂
Thank you again for your great work, but please also think a little about your fellow sick people. Thank you!
PS.: By the way, this is a similar problem as the bright light flashes when new ship markers appear in the HUD, which can cause big problems for migraine or eppelepsy patients.

It sounds nice so far, I like that the components and their state will create systemic sound. Hopefully part of the rework is to rely less on "ship board sound simulator" for combat in space, which kind of makes your ship feel thin and hollow. I hope they lean more into making atmospheric and space combat have entirely different sound profiles in that regard.

It does make sense to hear my ship as the air within my ship vibrates but I often wonder if the game would sound more epic if things like explosions in space should be a dull whooomph on the hill of my ship rather than a generalised explosive noise. If I were to observe a battle, I’d love a massive graphical display of explosions while I only hear my ship and crew and comms.

The sound design for this game is impeccable. I wish we could get a deeper technical look into the actual design process for certain components. Like how much of it is foley recording, how much is synthesized, how much of it is from analog (synths/modular). It’s super inspiring to see this as a sound designer.

Thank you, guys, in the sound development for your work. Please allow me a question about ship ambient sounds. How do u people decide how loud the ambient sound will be? I have many examples of ships so loud that it is really irritating after a while. Take, for example, the habitation area in the Carrack. It's louder than in its engine room. Even though the crew should be able to rest there. That's only one example. The ambient sound is important, but its volume should be much lower than now! Remember that people spend much time on those ships. Such levels are ok for the engine rooms but not for the rest of the ships.
Another thing I would like to mention here is the constant explosion-like sound coming from the engines of ships. Each and every single time a ship starts accelerating, every time the pilot stops accelerating, by releasing the throttle, we hear the engines do this explosion- like sound. That doesn't make any sense. Engines don't do that. It is totally irritating because we have to hear it hundreds of times in every session. Please take these matters into consideration.

I often say, you sometimes don't realise how much of how you feel about a game or movie is down to the music and sound design. It's so important, and I'd agree that it's a huge portion of the experience, especially the emotional and feel of an experience. I have always been happy with the way ships like the cutlass feel, how you can really hear an ensemble of systems reacting to how it's being flown. I'm glad to hear they're continuing to focus on that approach as it really adds a whole layer of believability to the experience.

WOW! now this is a real step forward for audio, finally going to match the visuals of the game.
I hope one day, similar to HybridVAudio's video of switching off the sound emulation while you're in a turret or as a pilot to really just hear the thumps and bumps of the impacts, and hopefully more in-depth internal computer announcements and sirens when it's more finalised.

I really wan SC to come out but have a feeling that we will be seeing another inside star citizen episode about sound rework again in 2025 because they came up with newer and fancier version and need to reach Gold Standard.

  • @TheRealMiniIsHere

Sound Design Team, We would LOVE 100% the ability to turn on and off "simulated sound" so if we turn it off, we wont hear things unless we have a direct impact such as lasers hitting the hull and shields, ballistics hittingthe shiled and hull the sound of guns going off and thrusters going off in a muffled form since sound doesn't travel in space. This will bring hard hitting audio immersion bringing the community to a newer level of creativity of playing AND short movies.

Bunch of good stuff in this video; the turrets, hull impact, and collision/explosion effects seem particularly relevant to gameplay (though it all could be).
