I haven't dug deep onbth3 stecs button setup yet but it might be set as a momentary (fast signal then none) which would make engaging quantum a bit tricky as you press and hold. I use one of the buttons on the base of Mt left stick now and it works OK. That profile attached to the video (linked in description) has it bound to left stick hat left.
Thank you so much for the video, I've been dreading redoing my VirPil HOSAS + Pedals because I couldn't figure out what was what with all the changes and this helped a ton! Appreciate you and subscribed!
Very good video. I touched saturation options while trying to adjust sensitivity, and now it's always strafing left and aiming left only even if I aim or strafe right. Edit: I deleted the user folder and rebinded keys. Everything perfect.
Just a suggestion for triggers: I bind one trigger per group too, but in order to avoid having to change default groups, I remove group 1 and bind group 2 and 3 to my triggers. This way the default SC bindings (energy on G2 and ballistics on G3) are already correct.
I've been playing around with fire groups to dual stage trigger binds in the PTU. The new video (still being produced) will have a section about this. Currently I have stage 1 right stick trigger to fire group 1, stage 1 left stick trigger set to fire group 2, 2nd stand right stick trigger to fire group 3, and left stick 2nd stage trigger to fire group 4. I've found this useful for the Hornet and F8C with the variety of guns. I can fire some of them on stage 1, and the others on stage 2. Lets me keep fire on tougher targets while the caps recharge. I appreciate you confirming that I'm not alone!
Really love that you took the time to do this. Been playing sims (and star citizen) for years, with quite a few diffrent setups but mainly used Thrustjunker T16000M HOTAS for years now. ABout 4 sets of them in 10 eyars because they're such garbage. When the inevitable potentiometer went bad the most recent time I manually upgraded it to a hall sensor. But it also needs redone every couple months so long story short I just ordered VKB's and was dreading having to go through the word soup that is Star Citizen's keybinds. Your bit on absolute and stuff extremely helped. SO thanks. Also, what kind of freak yaws with left to right XD. I'm kidding, I know some people do that. I can't. It doesn't make sense in my brain. Z-roation is like a steering wheel which turns left and right. IDK. lol.
Thanx. I have a x52 pro which I use on older pc but on my new rig I have warthog set up with ch pedals, cougar mfd's, 2 game glass tablets, tobi eye. Even with all those input options it's still difficult to make sure I have the most important functions selected. One thing that makes it easier is to find out which one is which and write it down. pedals=(input 3), throttle =(input 1) for example.
I try to keep the controls I use frequently,.or used in the midst of combat on the hats to minimize.hand travel. Infrequent binds, I typically place on the joystick bases, or on the button box portion of the throttle. Landing gear, VTOL, wing configuration, atc,.door and ports are prime candidates. That's my way, but each has to map according to what works best for them.
The only thing I may add is to speak about Joystick Gremlin which can turn a number of controls (e.g. joystick, throttle, pedals, gamepad) into a single, virtual joystick so that SC only sees one device. That eliminates a lot of the confusion about control numbers. It is a godsend for me.
In the linked zip file are my keybinds, and 2 vector images (open with edge if you don't have a preferred vector raster) with the keybinds shown. They were created with joystick-diagrams program. Basically the right stick is nose control (pitch, roll, yaw), targeting, countermeasures, etc. The left stick is navigation, doors, landing gear, vtol, lights, freelook, etc.
I noticed something about the Cruise Control : before you could enable/disable it anytime, but now your left joystick (the one that controls the forward/backward strafing etc) has to be centered if you want the button to be clickable. If you're strafing forward the button won't work. It's not a big deal, but it's not very practical to have to stop to change modes (I do it very often 😅).
I played around with this more. If I leave the left stick (throttle forward/backward) untouched and at Centerpoint, I can enable cruise control and it locks to the speed limiter. I control speed limiter on throttle box. Moving the left stick disengaes cruise control. I thought it a bug until reading the post in spectrum I linked in a text post here. Seems the cruise control is going away at some point. They intend to utilize trim instead. I posted a video about setting and using it today. I apologize for the delay in response. I prefer to have a good understanding before commenting or informing, and some family medical issues as of late took my attentions. After using the throttle trim a bit I'm digging it. Will take some repeated use before it becomes.habit.
You asked for suggestions: I know you are a Virpil guy, but a tutorial on how to add a popular throttle to a two-stick space-sim VKB setup would be well received in the Star Citizen population.
I'm def a VKB fanboy. I have a STECS throttle I could make a quick follow up on how to set it up. Thanks for viewing, and commenting the suggestion! There's an updated guide for 3.23 linked in the description BTW.
@@PaganLinuxGeek what button do you have your quantum start mapped to? Mine doesn't seem to be turning on, even tho I mapped it to quantum start. Appreciate all the help :) without it I'd still be stranded in space trying to figure my settings lol
The same button (left stick, middle hat, left < ) is used for both. Short press to enter qt mode, and a long press (3+ seconds) to engage qt. Th3 default keyboard map is short press B to engage qt mode, and long press to actually jump.
Sub earned great vid. I am trying to figure out how to setup my throttle so it is either is reverse mode or drive like a gear in a car so i can have more length of travel for more precision
There is a throttle forward axis binding option. If you do that then I'd urge you to bind a key for toggling forward reverse a couple lines underneath it if memory serves. Doing this means throttle all the way back is 0, and full forward is 100%. Pressing button means ship moves backwards.
HOSAM for me. Love having a left stick with angle attachment. Excellent console tip. Is there a reference to those commands? Floppy disk lol. I remember those days
Hey Chase! Good to see ya! I'm not aware of a comprehensive console command reference. Some are well known. We're also seen some new ones with the gen12 renderer implementation. Pp_swapdevices joystick # # is a simple flipper to exchange the bindings. You can do the same using a text editor on the xml file if you enjoy that sort of thing. I'm also aware of r_displayinfo [0-3] to show more information about the display such as framerate, memory usage, etc. Also there is r_displaysessioninfo [0-1] to show the session qr code. Handy for bug reports!
if you have the extension that gets added to the VKB joystick, you know that adds dials and switches, does that become part of the stick it is attached to?
Have you ever used the left VKB throttle style stick. I got a good deal on some barely used ones but they’re coming with the left stick being the throttle style. I wonder about buying the attachment from VKB to convert it from HOTAS style to HOSAS style
I've not personally but have heard great things. @scarredcitizen uses one if I recall correctly as well as severally others I see from.time to time. Most love that it makes the vertical strafe more natural. I'd suggest trying it a bit before making changes. Might be good fit. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!
It's been my experience that the first joystick found by SC doesn't get a number designated. It's just joystick X-axis. The 2nd and 3rd joysticks would get a number designated like joystick (2) or joystick (3). If you load into offline free flight mode of arena commander, setup, and test what happens? If bound it will show the button or axis for each in the option list. For example the pitch binding would reflect the axis. If it's not showing the axis then it's not set. There is a short timeout when setting. So if joystick movement isn't being detected that line will remain blank.
@@PaganLinuxGeek Thanks. I figured it out. Single Joystik doesn't have number. Movement didn't work because there are three different bindings for one movement, like "strafe up", "strafe down", "strafe up/down". As soon as I bound joystick to "strafe up/down" it works.
And a few other keybind breaking changes too. Sometimes I feel like Yogi does it on purpose. :-/ I'm planning to record an updated video this weekend. I want to spend a moment explaining some tips for the master mode toggle and Q jump as you cam bind.both to the same button with varying press durations. Short press to toggle mode, and long press to engage jump. The inversion name escapes me at the moment but I recall it was I'm controls - flight movement - forward /backward
Yes in Windows and IN the Game it was workiing but not in the Keyword biddings - I had to hard reset all the Biddings now its working again :) Great Video!@@PaganLinuxGeek
Hey Ive noticed that the current PU LIVE patch 3.22.1 detects my L-stick as it’s first joystick and any keybind from that stick can be bound as a double tap by pressing ‘Y’. However every other controller like the R-stick or other button panels wont allow for double tap and when their keys are bound. Those include all key binds labeled as “button ‘#’ (input #)”. Please share if you have a solution to this. I Have a full VKB setup with dual Gladiator NXT EVO’s and T-rudder Mk. V with SEM THQ and FSM modules. Great video as well! The control swap console command helped so much 👍
I would only use it if absolutely needed. Less stuff running on the system, and managing joysticks is better IMHO. Have a friend that has to use it for pedals as SC doesn't allow mapping them as needed. Trust me he'd love the option of dumping it. I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly: the PTU is allowing ONLY your left stick to have 2 functions for every button if you hold the Y key down?
great video. is there any way to set it so when you make a new binding, it deletes the old one? i copied your missile operator mode to the hat on my right joystick, which was by default set to strafe. but now it just has both, so when i activate, add or remove missile, or change missile type i also strafe in each direction. dont think its a big deal its only a quick press
Sadly no, it warns you that it's also used for ____ but doesn't offer option to remove previous mapped binding. If you have trouble locating the other bindings and dont mind starting over, you can reset to defaults. I show this in the start of video. Also If you are running VKB Space Combat Edition premiums you can toggle between ministick and hat mode by pressing IN on the hat/ministick. The LED will show RED in alt mode. That allows you to map analogue strafing to the ministick and other actions to the hat mode. :-)
If you have the extension that gets added to the joy stick, you know that adds dials and switches does that become part of the stick it is attached to?
Yes. It changes the "name" it reports in the device configuration utility too. A friend of mine @moonraker113 has the sem installed and reports that it appears are 1 device when using the link cable plugged into each device JST connector. If you connect with a usb cable it's a separate device.
Already wrote the script.:-) had been planning to record the video over last weekend but had to do something around the house. I'm reviewing the PTU as there's more keybind changes there as well. Im glad I could help with 3.22!
Where can I get these? I have the warthog and I'm looking to get dual and these look very affordable so could you please send me the link where I can get the dual the left and the right because Amazon only seems to have the right one. And thanks awesome video
www.vkbcontrollers.com assuming your in North America. The models featured in video are the Space Combat Edition EVO Premium left and right. The premium adds an analog mini-stick on the upper section and 5 way hat on the handle in place of a simple button..IMHO worth the extra 20-30..
Hey just a question but I am using a hotas setup with the gladiator nxt evo and a thrustmaster twcs throttle, how do I configure the throttle so that its only responsible for forward movement by moving back and forth but to reverse I have to press a separate button entirely, right now to go backward I have to move the throttle to 0 and to got forward move to 100 and to stay still I have to have it in an impossible middle position? is there any way I can fix this, thank you!
Yes actually! In the flight movement section bind the throttle to forward (abs). And a button the reverse. Then you press that button to allow reverse.
I just received my dual VKBs but as I was setting them up while following the video, the game doesn't recognize certain buttons on just my right joystick. On the left one everything registers, but for example Pitch and Yaw work but when I rotate the stick for Roll the timer just runs out. Same thing for Weapons group one when I pull the trigger.
Sounds like your freelook might be bound to the same control as forward/backward movement. Reset controls to defaults as shown in the beginning of the video.
the z axis on my left stick doesnt work. i have vkb gladiator nxt premiums. the left stick works for all other controlls but it will not let me bind Z for strafe up and down
Does it work when using vkb configuration? If not then hit the vkb discord. They are awesome in there. If configuration utilities show movement then it's not bound in SC. Follow the video again from the start. Use (abs) binds when opted.
So i'm trying to add my virpil alpha primes on mongoose stick bases.. they're not listed on the list of joystick/hotas...... I can't double click to edit the bindings at all..... help??? brand new sticks, and i've never used sticks b4
Launch windows settings (looks like a gear or cog) and search for joystick. It should show the game controller application. Run that. It will list the controllers windows sees. If the virprils dp not show in the list you'll need to verify they are connected properly, calibrated, and any needed utilities are running. If not you need to contact virpril support or a buddy running them. I wish I could help but do not have any personal experience with virpril products to draw upon. Now that we have that out of the way: you setup joysticks with a hierarchical tree in Star Citizen. Follow along with the video at its start. Particularly in the lower right and lower left corners. As this gets you into the joystick bindings and out of the keyboard mouse bindings section.
I have omni directional l throttle. So my right side is perfect with pitch, roll, yaw etc. No issies there. So im having big issies hetting throttle to work right. The speedblomited is screwing me. Ive tried to tweak and turn it off but then throttle doesnt work what so ever. No idea what to tweak in settinge for this throttle
I don't understand. The throttle doesn't work, or the speed limiter doesnt? I'd suggest rebinding the throttle (abs), and leaving the speed limiter unset to test.
Everything works except my right joystick movement. I can fire my guns, switch to missiles, etc but I can not bind the NXT EVO Right joystick to pitch, yaw, roll, etc The VKB software detects and can calibrate both joysticks - just SC not wanting to bind the movements...
Tha ks for the video, ive been running into a strange issue with my velocity one flight stick, when i go to load my my saved keybind control profile the Joystick device doesnt show up and wont let me select it, so i have to manually eedo my keybinds everytime they are defaulted. Its been happening since 3.20 released amd still happens in the PTU too, have you run into anything like this?
Absolutely! Some player prefer HOSAM. Hands On Stick And Mouse. If you want to use the stick for movement and mouse for pitch/yaw then skip the pith yaw section and move joystick for the strafe section. Reverse that if you want the stick to control pitch/roll/yaw.
Thank you so much for the joystick swap info. you have no idead how annoying it is when they switch and dont know how to get them back to normal.

I appreciate the sub, and the kind comments! Glad I could help. o7
This is awsome! im looking into getting a dual stick set up but was a bit afraid of the key bindings. this helped me a lot!
Keep a lookout for an updated video for 3.23 as there's significant changes. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very good video. I touched saturation options while trying to adjust sensitivity, and now it's always strafing left and aiming left only even if I aim or strafe right.
Edit: I deleted the user folder and rebinded keys. Everything perfect.
I've not dabbled much in the adjustments as the defaults seem to work really well for my setup. Fortunate there!
Used your old video very new to sticks with the wipe had to reset my sticks was just watching the old one when this popped up thank you
Happy to help, and thanks for both watching and commenting. It really helps my tiny channel. o7
Thanks my dude, just got myself a dual setup, this has been very helpful.
Glad I was able to help. You'll love dual setups!
just got my dual vkb gladiators and working on setting this up. This has helped tremendously!

@@PaganLinuxGeek get well soon 🙏
Thank you for showing me how to bind my keys.
@@SollomonTheWise you're welcome
I like to have roll and yaw swapped from what you have just because its physically more similar but other that that really good tutorial!
Thanks! I appreciate the comments!
amazing tutorial. lifesaver in setting up my new sticks!!!
Excellent! Check the newest one for some tips on button mapping!
IDK. lol.
Very high praise that is very much appreciated! I started with the tm16k as well. You'll love the vkbs!
Excelent explaination and demonstration! Thanks

Fantastic guide!
Thank you!.
@PaganLinuxGeek This was a life savor. I just got a set of Gladiator NXT for Star Citizen. Getting stuff set up while watching was a breeze.
Very kind!
good stuff, answered questions about the game ive had for a while : )
Thank you! Already getting ready for an updated version.
Thanks, dual sticks ordered, will use this to set them up!
Keep a watch out for an updated video for 3.23 as there's significant keybind changes.
I would recommend making one for 3.21, the 3.20 binds might f the 3.21 up with you keep using the 3.20 ones.
Agreed. Yogi's replies in Spectrum make me think we will see a series of changes for awhile.
Thank you for the video! I'd like to see how the rest of the button is set up.
The left stick is navigation, doors, landing gear, vtol, lights, freelook, etc.
now that we have master modes, I like to see an updated version of this.
It's coming soom (tm). JK I'm dealing with some tummy bug but will resume production.
very good video and clear instructions, thank you

Thanks for your contribution, I have the same controls , very usefull !!!!
They're great sticks, glad I could help!
I was able to engage while moving. Left stick bound to throttle forward/back abs. Were you coupled?
@@PaganLinuxGeek Yes, I always fly coupled. I'll do some more tests tonight.
Please do and share your binds for movement. I'd like to replicate
@@PaganLinuxGeek ok 👍
Thanks for this vid. Been fighting sticks being switched forever! Can you explain the new Adjust Trim Settings and their usefulness?
Let me play around with them more and I'll get something out. Thanks for the suggestion, and commenting on the video!

Great work thank you
Sub earned great vid.
Thank you👌🏿 always my go to
Happy to help
Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help!
So logic, cool. Thx.
Happy to be of help!
1:41 what if there is no "input 1 or 2" mentioned at all while joystick "Y-axis" binds perfectly? It doesn't work after that in the game.
Excellent!
@10:26 when you saved your keybindings, you forgot to change from 'keyboard/mouse' to 'joystick/hotas'. Will that cause an issue?
Not at all. Kbm, gamepad, joysticks all save to the file
Great video thanks for this it will help me sort things out
Thanks for watching, and commenting! Reach out if you need help or have suggestions

Thanks - Short n Sweet
yea they changed the inversion for thrust not sure what it is now (no longer throttle forward/backward(abs.)).
SC is not recognizing anymore my second Virpils Axis any Idea what I need to fix?
Does it show movement in windows joystick configuration applet?
Yes in Windows and IN the Game it was workiing but not in the Keyword biddings - I had to hard reset all the Biddings now its working again :) Great Video!@@PaganLinuxGeek
Thanks. Glad it's working now.
The control swap console command helped so much 👍
Do you have joystick gremlin or other joystick control software running?
Nope, I just calibrated all of the sticks and modules and close the vkb software. I have been thinking about using joystick gremlin though
Well done.
Thank you sir!
Your a joy sir.
Very kind of you sir. Thank-you
Thanks again!!
You're welcome!
great video. is there any way to set it so when you make a new binding, it deletes the old one? i copied your missile operator mode to the hat on my right joystick, which was by default set to strafe. but now it just has both, so when i activate, add or remove missile, or change missile type i also strafe in each direction. dont think its a big deal its only a quick press
If you connect with a usb cable it's a separate device.
your settings worked great for 3.22, can you do an update for 3.23 ??
Run through the reset and configuration utility as per VKB video. I'll bet that fixes it ;-)
Thanks that did the trick!@@PaganLinuxGeek
Glad I could help!.
awesome man, great for noobs on hosas like me :)
Just glad I can help!
When using thrust my heads moving around now and looking in direction of push?
What about set up for throttle 3.23.1. There is not a throttle forward in controls.
Thanks
@OldManGamer65 yeah they renamed it, again.
th-cam.com/video/KUpmdxVEJO0/w-d-xo.html
I have omni directional l throttle.
So my right side is perfect with pitch, roll, yaw etc. No issies there.
So im having big issies hetting throttle to work right. The speedblomited is screwing me. Ive tried to tweak and turn it off but then throttle doesnt work what so ever.
No idea what to tweak in settinge for this throttle
I don't understand. The throttle doesn't work, or the speed limiter doesnt? I'd suggest rebinding the throttle (abs), and leaving the speed limiter unset to test.
Everything works except my right joystick movement.
I can fire my guns, switch to missiles, etc but I can not bind the NXT EVO Right joystick to pitch, yaw, roll, etc
The VKB software detects and can calibrate both joysticks - just SC not wanting to bind the movements...
What happens when you try?
Will you be updating this for 3.23? I’m trying to find some binding suggestions for 3.23.
Yes. I'm in process now, actually. :-)
Is the keybind file located in user/0/controls/mapping folder and named something_keybinds.xml ??
@@PaganLinuxGeek yes
Sounds like it's not recognizing the file format. Can you send me the file so I can look at it?
@PaganLinuxGeek sure how would you like me to send it to you, I can once I'm off work, it's a HOMAS setup btw
If you're on Discord, friend me, PaganLinuxGeek, or email me direct Pagan [dot] Harold [at] Gmail [dot] com
can you do like for one jostick and keybord
Absolutely! Some player prefer HOSAM. Hands On Stick And Mouse. If you want to use the stick for movement and mouse for pitch/yaw then skip the pith yaw section and move joystick for the strafe section. Reverse that if you want the stick to control pitch/roll/yaw.
