I have had 3 deaf ferrets (it is a genetic problem with certain colors, Panda and Badger colors seem to be the biggest problem, not all ferrets those colors will be deaf, but those are the colors). Since they can’t hear the squeal when they get too ruff, I scruff (like a mama cat) and put them in their cage for a min or two only, it’s training not punishment, don’t walk away cos their attention span is very short, even shorter than mine 🤣🤣) then taking them back out and trying again. My last ferret took about two weeks to nip train. You have to be consistent and do this every time they nip too hard. 😊
i had a ferret for 7 years, i was young when we got him and throughout the years he became less social as we didn't take care of him properly and every time we handled him in his last years, we would bite non stop and would draw blood every time. when we get our new ferrets, i will train them and give them a life that my baby was never able to have
I just brought my ferret home as a birthday/anniversary gift for my wife and I knew there would be alot of care going into it. Your videos are extremely informative and I can't wait to apply everything when I get home from today moving forward
I agree I recently brought ours. My daughter asked me too. I began researching to see how to properly take care of him. Thier diet and everything.. I tersering. I. Glad o looked up how to take care of him instead of assuming. I would have assumed he could eart fruit so I. Thankful I also found out things that are sad about where alot of them come from.
Due to some pretty unique circumstances, my mom and I ended up with 5 ferrets our cousins couldn't keep while raising their very young kids (we got the 3 young girls first, the two older boys later). This channel helped a lot with the sudden fur baby adoption. All but one was gentle, our vicious young girl named Lani. Her bite problem was the worst, and for a while I had to keep mom from giving her away. Something about her aggressiveness didn't sit right, and I remembered that my cousins mentioning her possibly being deaf. I noticed she always seemed more hyper than actually aggressive; she is a very loud dooker. It's because of this channel I got the idea she was simply never properly taught not to bite; she couldn't hear whenever she made her playmates squeal from pain or when we tried to use training for a ferret that could hear. Knowing she wasn't really trying to hurt anyone and just wanted to play all the time, the chasing she would do felt less threatening for my brother and everyone else's feet! We had to use a glove for a while, but she got the idea we didn't like her biting because we would only play with a glove. Such a smart little one. For a while she even refused to bite at all, not wanting the hesitant glove treatment, which we wouldn't do again. But now she feels confident enough to nibble and gently mouth at anyone's hands or even toes for attention and is still as hyper as before. Thanks for the help!
Finally something I can work with my second ferret bites so hard it draws blood. Everyone says it's normal but it hurts so bad I was considering giving up. Thank you!
Great video. When my babies used to bite, I had a small 10cc spray bottle filled with cold water. They soon learned that biting leads to a water spray, and the bad behaviour stops. Pick them up and cuddle them every day. They are intelligent animals and respond to treats. I hand feed mine. They take the food but never bite my fingers. Best wishes.

This can be very frustrating, especially with their extra sharp teeth as younglings. I'll be making a bite-training protocol soon to followup on this biting series ♥
Brilliant video - as per usual! 💜 When we got our rescue ferret Bert, he was malnourished and mistreated - we had to work really hard to build up his trust. It took a lot of malt paste, salmon oil and patience! He also wasn’t neutered and this not only made him bite hard, but also overproduce sebum. Thankfully our lovely Vet (we’re in the UK!) recommended the Suprelorin/Deslorelin hormone implant and this really helped with his behaviour - he’s so much happier and carefree. We also had the hormone implant for our female ferret Sunny, as it drastically reduces the risks caused by spaying. I highly recommend speaking with a small animal vet and even getting a few second opinions to work out what’s best for your little one! Bert’s turning six this year and he’s grown into such an incredible fuzz ball - they give so much amazing energy back, so make sure you put a lot in for them! 💜
Many years ago when I had ferrets, one of them (a tiny little sweetheart we called "Lola") was snuggling with me on my chest. She started licking my cheek for a while, but suddenly bit into it. She wasn't a biter. I don't know where that came from at all. I made sure not to hold her within close proximity to my face anymore after that, but wish I knew what caused it.
I have one like this. I think it's the salty taste and soft texture of our skin that is too tempting for them. I equate it to being like when I chew fruity gum and can't help but swallow it; it's just too much for them to resist. My other one is the complete opposite though; bites when hungry and playing but never ever when licking faces.
Baby ferrets from this one particular pet store bit like sharks. But the store employees didn't play with them or give them anything to chew on. Another store they were really sweet and cuddly, but the staff routinely played with them and they had all kinds of things to chew.
Thank you so much for this!!! We got a 3rd ferret that has a bit of a biting problem especially the sudden lick lick into a bite with a rapid head shake dragging motion so little Sweet Pea hasn’t been so sweet 😭

I need advice on helping a ferret feel comfortable in the car/carrier! My 3yr old hates it and we are planning on bringing him with us on vacation soon which is about a 3 1/2hr drive! He’s been this way since I got him at 8wks old.
I’ve done research on ferrets for abt a year and was abt to get two but I decided I don’t think I’m ready and therefore don’t want to hurt or maybe do something wrong
Where did you buy the wall tunnel set up in your house? Or did you make it? I’m thinking about getting something similar for my ferrets so they can play more but I’m not sure where to look
Thank you, 2 of my girls bite wrists. I have had them since they were little. Nibbles has always been a biter but Reki got that behavior from Noodle being dominant. I will watch out for enviromental stressors and work on bite inhabition.
So I always thought that he was being aggressive to himself and would get hurt because I would see those marks. I even told my husband and we decided to see what would he do to make those marks, so we could prevent him from doing it. Now I know it's just that he is a Marshall ferret. 9:23
Having had a deaf ferret, they tend to mouth too hard because they harder time learning that they mouthing so hard it's really a bite. They also tend to lash out because your hands are gonna scare them more easily especially if they do not see them coming. They also can freak out and bite when touch them unexpectedly.
I love your videos! Im a huge ferret fan and had a business of 9. Unfortunately we are down to 5 and ever since we’ve been down to 5 our little love bug Wally has changed. He tends to lock onto a few of the other guys, and not let go. The ones being bit just lay there and cry. I have to carefully open his jaw to make him let go as if I don’t it results in large cuts and scabs on the victims head/neck area. Any thoughts as to what this may be and how I can stop this behavior? It happens several times a day and through the night. Thanks!
So about the bite inhibition and a bite training boot camp. You said you'd link the protocol down below but I can't find it and this is what I'm struggling with right now.
My ferrets are only probably 9-11 months so they bite for playing and 4 no reason what so ever but they like to pounce and play with me and my brother!
Our ferret is still little, she's almost six months old. We like to let her free roam and she loves to play with our cat. They will run around the house, chase each other, and have so many wonderful adventures lol. I'm usually doing work or playing games on my computer while they are playing. She'll sneak into the room and bite one of my toes before running off. She bites a lot more gentler now than when we first got her and it's just adorable. I see it as a way of her saying, "Hey Dad come and join in on the fun. Chase me!"
I have just gotten a new ferret after my last one passed away. My last ferret had only bit whist hyper. But my newest one, will bite my arms and feet all the time. I’m away quite a bit due to school and work. But every time I’m home I will spend all my time with my ferret. The person I had got her from said she was tamed and trained but not only is she biting but she is also using every spot in my bedroom as her bathroom
Some ferrets love biting and others aren't so bothered. It's always play biting in my experience and it's just what they do. It's better if you've got tough hands, but don't put them near your face unless you really trust them.
uhm hi! i watch your videos all the time even tho i dont have a ferret i might be able to get one or two soon btw you and em from i dont remember her youtube but anyway you and her are my favorite youtuber:)
Everyone one I meet say “ferrets are mean, they always bite” this was crazy to hear I had one growing up and she was soooo sweet. Would play fight, but never attacked. She had a big cage and was given free range of my brothers room. She was never “locked up” we left the door open. She was very clean, never pooped or peed (only in one corner) so we added a tray to that corner and boom problem solved. Maybe I was just lucky but mine was like a trained emotional dog and slept with me. I personally have never met a mean ferret. This information is important, because I think ferrets have bad reputations Becuase people are uneducated about the pets they get.
I really want a ferret but I can't get one because there are very expensive and I'm not very responsible and I'm young and we have a dog and a lot of stuff that wouldn't be good for a ferret to run around I
@@Yaptimewithtrin lol I wish that u had a pay pal I could give u 200$ and show u how to train ur dog to like it on discord sry for ur pain 😂 (And all about how u can prove u r responsible)
Watching her videos and I'm a rescue home I went out and offered assistance with two ferrets I have a long journey with them but they are amazing ancient animals I love her informational videos good information shower time was so cute
When I owned one long ago. She NEVER bit only chew. When on my shoulder out and about she would chew my ear to let me know she needed to go bathroom (loved being on my shoulders), when someone she didn't know try to pick her up or chew on my finger when playing.
I’ve wanted a ferret for a really long time and since yesterday I’ve watched about 18 of your videos 💀 Today I wrote my dad a whole paragraph in why we should get 2 ferrets 😭
@@genroa3881 Talking down to young people about how they shouldn’t get pets because they aren’t toys is quite rude. How would you like it if someone told you “you shouldn’t have a baby, they’re not *pets*”. I’m sure these young people are fully aware of the fact that living animals are not the same as toys.
We got our Sassy almost 5 years ago. Well she use to bite hard. I did the same thing I did with my puppies. Give a small pinch on their side. The hard they bite the harder you pinch. She did hiss like a cat, so we just hissed back. Sassy is 100 percent free range. She does bite still but it is a much easier bite that does not hurt at all. She has an apt in every room in the house. She will not go outside during the day. Once the sun goes down. She is ready. She loves to sleep and play with my pitbull.
Thank you so much my ferret likes to follow me around the house and sometimes like to bite my feet and IT HURTS! But he is only three months old and I just got him a week ago
I have 15 ferrets and even though I have a massive cage that I made (6’tall, 6’long , 2’ wide, 5 levels) I still don’t cage them ever, unless someone needs a timeout. I only have 2 that bite me, and that’s to wake me up if I sleep too late. Only a little nibble after a couple of licks. Everyone gets along pretty much, but there are a few factions . Some get along better with others and they are their sleeping buddies.
Hello The Modern Ferret My ferret does exactly the same as the first ferret in this video- lick, lick, bite down hard- I suspect he didn't have the best start in life, may have been abused( unsure about all this as he has been found and taken in by a rescue before I adopted him). What do you think is best to do?
I have a quick question it's not necessary about the video but I'm trying to find out how to teach my ferret not to get into plant pots but hes deaf so idk how to train him if anyone can help plz do
Have you tried getting him a dig box the reason he may be getting into the plant pots might be because of lack of stimulation, if so then a dig box helps a lot.
Sadly this didn't answer my one question I have for my ferrets. Lucy is awesome. We are strongly bonded. She eats and drinks from my hand. She is very communicative. She also at times and with varying intensity focuses on biting/tugging on the tendon area inside my arms opposite my elbows. I see no correlation to it being hunger/need for food. Tho it may be. She does it much less since hand feeding. She was a terrible eater until I learned this is how she will eat. I suspect it's nursing at the root but elevated by mood... or if I need to shower. Lol... animals... go figure
One of our ferrets always bites my boyfriend or other friends but she never bites me. I already thought it's bc i spend most time with her and i really have to thank you for this Video, now i'm sure this is the reason 😄
I just adore you!!! I haven't had a Ferret in about 15 years. I became very ill and I haven't been able to have another Ferret in all of these years. OMG, I miss them so much and watching your videos has made me want to have a couple of Ferrets again in my life. Did I mention how much I LOVE Ferrets!!! I have had 8 Ferrets in my life. All of them wer given to me as rescues and not even one of them was ever aggressive at all. I am a disabled Senior now, but I still want to add a couple of Ferrets into my life! In abour 1 year or so from now, I am planning to relocate to Greensboro, North Carolina. Do you have any suggestions about where I may be able to get some NON-MARSHALL Ferrets. Neddless to say, all of the Ferrets I rescued were Marshall Ferrets and all of them died awful deaths, from either INSULINOMA, (with screaming seizures) or Adrenal Disease, where they lost all of their hair and were suffering fron such awful Hyperactivity where they could never settle down. OMG, Just writing about this just about floors me with the awful memories of those days. I REALLY cannot stand Marshall. They are a Farm that allows their Ferrets to be in the sunlight too much as Kitts, which causes these diseases. Also, they Spay and Neuter the Kitts WAY too young, which also causes these Diseases to Occur. I have been a Dog Groomer and a Dog Grooming Instructor for over 30 years. Animals have been my life and my proffesion. Now I have become a Reiki Mater and more importantly, and Animal Reiki Master. I plan on moving to Greensboro North Carolina in about a year, as I mentioned before. When I get settled, I really would love to invite some Beautiful Ferrets into my life once again! Your Videos impressed me, very much indeed! Please keep in touch, if you would be so kind! Much Weasel Wuv!!! Gracie
We've just got 2 4mo Jill's. Max is so placid but Munson is verrrrry nibbly and has even made little hisses. She's not hurt me, but it doesn't feel like play, it's a quick nip. Any and all techniques to hand train, discourage the nibbling Is always appreciated, thank you x
Hello, What a fun and educational video. Now I see that you have several ferrets yourself. A ferret is actually a solitary living animal, just like the wild polecat. They live alone and visit each other during the mating season. Keeping multiple ferrets together can also often lead to frustration and stress. So actually it is not recommended to keep several ferrets together. Unlike a lot of other animals, this one is not a group animal 🙂
I have a ferret who is now almost 11 months old. I adopted him when he was 8 weeks. He was super bitey at first. It was definitely because he was baby, and well just like puppies and most baby animals it's all they know. I was told by my vet the most effective way to curb biting was to scruff and lick his face every time he bit and to never use my hands as a way of play. It teaches them that people are not toys. Also everytime I take him out in the morning( he is free range during the day, caged at night and when not home because I also own a cat. Safety first although they get along really well) I try to entertain him with plenty of toys( basically all my cats toys) it's worked for me. Also my vet told me they learn bad behavior before good behavior. So if I was holding him and he used biting as a way to be put down, I would scruff lick and when he was no longer chewing on my hand then I put him down so he didn't learn biting as a way to get his way. It's all worked well for me. He no longer bites at all and is super cute and fun. Hope some of this advice helps someone experiencing a bitey noodle. My vet told me the scruff and lick method works on older ferrets as well but may take longer to learn his new habbit.
Mine got be during an extended rough play session. Got me right in the web between the thumb and pointer. He was just too excited. I keep the play hand wrestling down to a few minuets at a time and break it up with chase the plastic bottle.
Thank you so much, I just got a baby ferret and she was the only ferret that never sold and the reason why is because she's a bitter but with your advice I'm going to work with her.. thank again
Hi thanks for the video. I have two ferrets. The female when we are playing and she starts running around wanting me to chase her she often gets ahold of my hand biting it and pulls my hand under the couch, then lets it go. Is she saying your hand is mine ? I am not concerned just would like to know what it means. Thanks in advance for any response.
I have two and I couldn’t even make them bite someone. Bad girl bit me one time when I brought her home because she was absolutely terrified and just a baby

One of mine does this too. She is 8months old. I hope it cuz her milk teeth are coming out
My ferret does the same thing
Yeah I've wondered about that, when I had my ferret she did that.
Lol
I love your videos so much, and I'm probably late on the subject but I'm so sorry about newt but I'm sure he's safe in heaven.
Awesome vid! I am getting my ferret next month I have the cage and everything just waiting and so excited watching all these videos from u thanks for making them 😆
Where did you get those big tunnels on your wall? Id love to buy some please. Thank you
at 3:16 dats wat mines do all night long and his cage is like det I got him from McKinley Food and Pet Supply in Valdosta ga and that's what he does 🤦
Thx for the help! Your one of the best ferret mamas
I need advice on helping a ferret feel comfortable in the car/carrier! My 3yr old hates it and we are planning on bringing him with us on vacation soon which is about a 3 1/2hr drive! He’s been this way since I got him at 8wks old.
We will definitely be doing a traveling with ferrets video soon - thanks for the idea!
@@TheModernFerret I’m happy that u agree with him/her I do too cuz sometimes ppl like to travel and the ferret needs to come.
Great video, but I have to ask, where do I get those hard tubes you have behind you?
I’ve done research on ferrets for abt a year and was abt to get two but I decided I don’t think I’m ready and therefore don’t want to hurt or maybe do something wrong
Thank you for being responsible!
That’s sweet same same, dude!
Thanks!
You didn’t add any of the links you promised.
Where is the biting bootcamp you said was linked? I cant find it :(
I’m trying to find it too 😢
Hi! And thank you for the videos!!! Quick question: wanted to know where I can get a tunnel structure like the one you have on your wall.
So about the bite inhibition and a bite training boot camp.
You said you'd link the protocol down below but I can't find it and this is what I'm struggling with right now.
Luv your vids
Chase me!"
I don't have a ferret YET but this is still very helpful when I get one
Where is the link to the biting boot camp thing???
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for submitting your biting ferret clips to hello@themodernferret.com !!!
I really want a ferret but I can't get one because there are very expensive and I'm not very responsible and I'm young and we have a dog and a lot of stuff that wouldn't be good for a ferret to run around I
Lol the text stickers are adorable, did moose tell u he wanted it this way? Newt and Albert are cute in those too!!
@@Yaptimewithtrin lol I wish that u had a pay pal I could give u 200$ and show u how to train ur dog to like it on discord sry for ur pain 😂
(And all about how u can prove u r responsible)
What are the tubes on your wall called ? I donthave a ferret but my rats would LOVE this !
I’m a fan of the channel i don’t have a ferret in my life
I’m getting a ferret in a couple of months and this rlly helped bc those harsh biting videos are terrifying bc I don’t want that to happened to me 😥
Thank you so much for the comment on my last comment and I was wondering why my ferret bit me
Of course! Thanks for messaging me!
And my ferrets just turned 1 year old So are they teething or biting
Watching her videos and I'm a rescue home I went out and offered assistance with two ferrets I have a long journey with them but they are amazing ancient animals I love her informational videos good information shower time was so cute
Where is the link for bite training that you said you were going to post?
U mention twice about linking a video below, I can’t find either of them :( can u add the biting inhibition video plz
I’m getting my ferret on Tuesday can’t wait
Exciting!
I finally got the ferret nation cage for my ferret and he loves it
When I owned one long ago. She NEVER bit only chew. When on my shoulder out and about she would chew my ear to let me know she needed to go bathroom (loved being on my shoulders), when someone she didn't know try to pick her up or chew on my finger when playing.
I grew up with ferrets as a kid (half my life). I can't wait to have my own as an adult.
when showering i know they have raspatory issues. does bathroom fragrances bother them at all? what would you recommend?
Where are the links you mention
well i dont hv a ferret..but i guess this video can be handy for the future 🤷♀️
I’ve wanted a ferret for a really long time and since yesterday I’ve watched about 18 of your videos 💀 Today I wrote my dad a whole paragraph in why we should get 2 ferrets 😭
Same. I've got two folders worth of papers on ferrets, yet still no baby's in sight. *sighs in fur babyless*
Ferrets are a lot of work and attention. Think hard and a lot about why you really want them, they're not toys. Be very sure of your decision. :)
That is incredible! Keep up the great research :)
Love all your ferret vids - keep 'em coming :-)
Thank you! Will do!
@@TheModernFerret Thank you!! You're setting a great example of how ferrets should be kept :-) Colin (UK)
Hello The Modern Ferret
My ferret does exactly the same as the first ferret in this video- lick, lick, bite down hard-
I suspect he didn't have the best start in life, may have been abused( unsure about all this as he has been found and taken in by a rescue before I adopted him). What do you think is best to do?
I have a quick question it's not necessary about the video but I'm trying to find out how to teach my ferret not to get into plant pots but hes deaf so idk how to train him if anyone can help plz do
Have you tried getting him a dig box the reason he may be getting into the plant pots might be because of lack of stimulation, if so then a dig box helps a lot.
look up clicker training but try a flash light instead. or any vision que /hand signs
@@je46and269 thanks I'll look into that
@@gabrielamilbrandt3510 oh wow I didn't know that thanks
Sadly this didn't answer my one question I have for my ferrets.
Lucy is awesome. We are strongly bonded. She eats and drinks from my hand. She is very communicative.
She also at times and with varying intensity focuses on biting/tugging on the tendon area inside my arms opposite my elbows. I see no correlation to it being hunger/need for food. Tho it may be. She does it much less since hand feeding. She was a terrible eater until I learned this is how she will eat. I suspect it's nursing at the root but elevated by mood... or if I need to shower. Lol... animals... go figure
I need to know how to get that tube wall behind you seriously my ferrets would love it
my ferret scratches my feet all the time
If I don't pay attention to my ferret she bites me lol.
I LOVE your videos!!❤️
One of our ferrets always bites my boyfriend or other friends but she never bites me. I already thought it's bc i spend most time with her and i really have to thank you for this Video, now i'm sure this is the reason 😄
Hi! I'm not seeing a link to Biting Bootcamp in the description, can you please share it?
Just added it to the description! Thanks for reminding me! Here it is again: www.themodernferret.com/how-to-stop-ferret-biting/
Thank you this helped a lot
Hello,
What a fun and educational video.
Reverse UNO card: spray super bitter spray on hand.
Problem is, one of my ferrets seems to consider that just some kind of spicy sauce...
There is no link in the description below for the videos mentioned. 😅
My vet told me the scruff and lick method works on older ferrets as well but may take longer to learn his new habbit.
thank you so much, you saved my fingers! 🥲
Our latest rescue is just 9 weeks old, lost his last milk tooth yesterday. We are his 4th home so god knows when he was taken from his mum
Oh my gosh! Thanks for sharing, best wishes to the little orphan.
Mine got be during an extended rough play session. Got me right in the web between the thumb and pointer. He was just too excited. I keep the play hand wrestling down to a few minuets at a time and break it up with chase the plastic bottle.
Hi! I love your videos 🥰😘😘😘🌹GBLSssss!
The ferret whisper. ;)
I really need the "bite protocol" to learn my ferret how to bite, but I can't see the link 😦 Do you have a video with that?
Me too I need that link
Me to me too, lol.but 4 reals,I really need that link too✌️🫶🌸
The,"Pay attention to me or else human!", bite. 🤣🤣🤣
I have two and I couldn’t even make them bite someone. Bad girl bit me one time when I brought her home because she was absolutely terrified and just a baby
Thank u so much . my new boy sushie is a lil rough and i didn't like doing what the pet store said how to correct
