      I just adopted a ferret that wasn’t taken care of very well by the previous owners. She is about 1/4 the weight and size she should be. I’m trying to learn all I can so I can help her.

  • @DJPOLONESHKA
    @DJPOLONESHKA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +139

    Just a small tip that may help.
    You can easily include your ferret to everyday activities by teaching him/her to stay on your shoulders. It is very easy for a ferret to learn that. If you have a hoodie, oh boy they will love it.
    Etsuko (my ferret) loves to go from shoulder to shoulder and to lie in the hood.
    Rule #1 straight back, don't bend your back to help the ferret
    Rule #2 don't excessively help the ferret to stay on, they will learn and then they will love it.
    Etsuko when she is tired of a long day out of the house she actually tries to climb on me so she can rest on my shoulders or even better in the hood.

      hi do u have one or more ferrets and if u do have one alone is it doing good?

    • @DJPOLONESHKA
      @DJPOLONESHKA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@cinnamoth2206 I have 1 ferret, but I sometimes meet with other people with ferrets (it is very possible that there is a group on Facebook in your country, with people with ferrets. I live in Greece and that's how I met people like that)
      And personally since Etsuko (my ferret) was like 2-3 I Had a dog for a while and now a cat, so she has some company.
      Sorry for the long reply, but just to end my monologue 😝, it is preferred to have at least 2 ferrets (females), but a ferret, without siblings in the house, can have a very happy and fulfilled life as long as you care for her/him properly and give love.

      @@TheModernFerret I was a ferret owner from 1986 to 2018. They are the best. One thing that very few vids comment on is the joy of elderly ferrets. They've mellowed out and just want to hang out with you. All the cuddles you waited for when they were younger really pay off at this point. I miss having them. I still watch ferret vids all the time.

      I take my ferret for 6-8 block leash walks every night of the year, rain or shine. My current ferret is a big time sniffer, so you have to be patient with a sniffer, he sniffs everything in sight. He's a Scorpio, sign of the detective, perhaps that explains it.

    Have had at least 10 ferrets over the years. They are the best. My first ferret was over 40 years ago. I had to obtain a wild animal permit to own her. Also had to find an intact male to breed her. She was a wonderful mother. My other ferrets were all adoptions of unwanted animals. I just got 2 more rescues this year. I love them. I had forgotten how wonderful they are. Good to see your videos making people understand what great pets they are.

    Excellent Video! As a ferret owner of now 9+ years I can absolutely confirm all of those. I am actually in a new bonding process myself. Now after my two first boys died (Odin 8 years, dementia and cancer; Baldur 9 years, cancer and heart issues), and after a few months of mourning, we put our names down at a private ferret-shelter, and took two lovely boys, and a little girl in. All of them are very friendly to humans, although they didn't have the best life before, but of course they needed bonding as well. What I really can say, it that it is beneficial to simply have them around you all day, or at least as much as possible (like you would with a cat or a dog). Playing is essential, but even if you are just resting, they enjoy your presence, and are entertained by every singe thing you do, making the bed (playing hide under the blanket), sweeping the floor (hunt the broom), and hang up laundry (diving in the basket). All those daily chores will take a little more time, but your little fluff-noodles will surely enjoy it. Try to lure them with snaks just as a little drop of vitamine-paste for cats, or some eggyolk. With time they will be more and more interested in you.The thing with the smell is also a very good tip. I often leave worn t-shirts on the floor, and regularly find one of the ferrets in it. Its been 3 weeks now since we have taken our little group in, and all are playing with us, can be picked up and cuddled, and one of our boys, Balin is even occasionally sleeping in my bed with me. Well socialized ferrets are just so rewarding and fun to be around. After a few weeks at a new home they personality really comes out. Our shy girl turned out to bee a sneaky, cheeky energetic little party-bouncer, our little troublemaker has become quite the cuddle machine, and our shy, silent, deaf boy has become so adventurous he as already redecorated the whole flat, and shows us which parts of our living space are not ferret- proof lol. It is soooo worth it.

    I have owned three businesses of ferrets. My last one ended in 2021 :( I miss them so much. My fondest memory of my three amigos was playing with them in the basement area of my house called the “rec room”, with the doors closed the area was basically easily ferret proofed. Back when I was still subject to exams and tests in my undergraduate studies. I would make sure there was lost of freer enrichment items in this area, which I would switch out every week to make sure it did not get old when I had to use this method of making sure they got their out of the cage time. Well this was a very large area with all corners fitted with litter boxes and like I said lots of ferret enrichment items, some were permanent like those huge cat towers you can buy but the rest were interchangeable. Well when I had a lot of reading and studying to get done and I could not interact with them as much as I would normally like to. I would simply make a bed in the middle of this play area by laying down four large blankets to work as a mattress and about two to three pillows to lift my head up enough to read. Most times I would make sure this was orientated in such a way that my head would also use the wall to support my head for reading/studying. During these sessions they would play with themselves until they tired themselves out. Every time I did this and most times this would always happen. I would read/study until the point where I was fighting a war to keep my eyes open and keep myself awake, I would always lose… lol. But this is where I found their cutest behaviour with me and I knew they were super attached to me. Every time I would have nights like this and I’d fall asleep while reading/studying, I would always wake up with them all cuddled up in between my legs on top of the blankets covering me. It was the cutest thing I ever seen. I miss all my ferrets so damn much… Cheers!

    “Time & commitment.” Yes! Also, do a lot of research before you choose a ferret as a family member. My tiny ferret, Olive, BEGS for attention; never runs from me. She gets whatever she wants❣️She has full access to my home (completely ferret-proofed) but chooses to follow me around in cute & mischievous ways. When I pretend to fall asleep, she licks my eyelids. I think she’s deaf, but I still talk to her. When she grabs her toys & hides them in the “hammock” she’s made out of the underlining of my furniture, I die. Some of them are bigger than her.
    Gotta go play with her now!

      if she is without another ferret than that’s most likely why unless she has issues with other ferrets you should never ever only have 1 bc you’ll become their 2nd ferret and typically you can’t always provide what a 2nd ferret would she begs for attention because you’re all she has it’s sad so many people have normal ferrets by themselves and without a companion

    I love this! U give me hope that my "killer" can still bond with me! I have one friendly ferret, and one that doesn't bite me anymore, but bites everyone else, and doesn't let go! Even unprovoked. She walks up to them and sinks her teeth in! I'm going to follow your bonding guide and hopefully she can come out when my husband and kids r home! 🤦‍♀️

    I have a little girl who's deaf. I got her a few days ago and I was hoping we would be best buds before the end of the first day. She can't hear me, so she jumps if she can't see me before I pick her up, and she doesn't respond to sounds, so I can't talk with her like I want to, but I still do anyway. It's nice to know there are other ways to encourage her to come out of her shell. I can't wait to try bonding exercises with her!

    This was honestly really helpful because my boyfriend and I got a ferret recently and he stays with me but I work 40 hrs a week, I try to let him out of his cage earlier before I leave so he has an hour or so to play and wander/explore. Even when I get home from work I immediately get him out of his cage because I'm sure he hates it haha I even try to get other members of my family to let him out and play because I don't want him in the cage so much. But I've definitely noticed some subtle signs last night of him bonding with me which is really nice.

      please give your ferret to a better home you are not a good home for him, you should NEVER have one unless they have issues being with other ferrets and even if they do and you do have one you clearly cannot spend enough time with him especially if you’re asking family members to do YOUR job as his owner and your ferret won’t want that he isn’t likly to bond with them idk why do many unqualified people are ferret owners do what’s best for your ferret bc your home isn’t what’s best for him, it may hurt but you chose to get a ferret without doing enough research and without being able to do what you should as an owner

    I adopted a juvenile sable from a pet store that no buddy wanted because he was abused which caused him to be a very bad bitter. Up until he passed away he still would bite but he wouldn't bite me hard, now other people it was a different story. We always played around the house he was particularly found of blanket rides up and down the hallway. We ate together, napped together, went on outings, and enjoyed the great outdoors. He really enjoyed the winter time when he got to burrow through deep snow. For a little honey badger of a ferret he was a really great friend.
    I have found that ferretone is the nectar of the gods for these little carpet sharks, I used this to trim the nails on my little bitty ferret. I ended up naming him Draco because he was quite the angry little dragon when I first got him.

      I started with one but within a month ended up with 2 little ones. I rescued and adopted from people online to avoid supporting the pet stores (who use ferret mills). Spend some time doing a ton of research. I spent about a month or two doing INTENSE research and I still wasn’t 100% ready haha. They’re the best pets ever and I literally regret NOTHING haha they’re absolutely amazing, even with their insane zoomies and potty training and what not haha ❤️ if you decide ferrets are the right pets for you, you’ll never regret it haha they’re so amazing ❤️

    We just adopted 2 rescue Ferrets. Stoney and Pebbles. 2 and 3 years old. All we know of their past home is they were kept outside in a hutch and had very little human interaction. Both bite, neither of them like being held. It's going to be a long road, but we're 100% dedicated to giving these little floofs the best life possible and this video will really help. Thank you

    I adopted an EU hybrid to keep my big polecat company. She was super shy and very bitey. It takes patients and a will not to react if bitten. After 6 months of work she now climbs up my leg for a stroke. It feels very rewarding to bring her round but it did take time. My first ferret was the same, he bit me hard a few times and some family members, but he turned into a big softy after some time.

    I no longer have ferrets, but when I had a bonded pair, one of them instantly bonded with every single human he met. I think new people were his favorite toys. 🤣 The other had a chronic illness (mystery illness, not adrenal disease) and mostly wanted to be left alone by anyone other than me. I had him tucked away in the ferret room when most visitors came over, although he he did seem to simply tolerate one of my friends. I miss them both dearly. It's been about 12 or 13 years since they crossed the rainbow bridge.

    I wish I could've used this. I had a fun ferret once. We were close, but one day, my sister brought her friend over. She played with my ferret so roughly she nearly killed my ferret. Then she was terrified of me and would never trust me again. She was scared to the point where she would try to escape any time she could and would destroy everything. We had to keep her in her cage all the time because of this. She was like this until the day she died alone at the bottom of her cage. RIP Lilly. Know that I would have never hurt you and I still love you.
    God, I cant even type this without crying... it's been two years...

I lost my first babies over the winter and this makes me miss them SO bad. It took them nearly a year to want to be held by me. They had been neglected for a while at 3 years old but I won them over eventually 😎 Still have one boy left who is my soul mate and we go a lot of places together. I’m sure you follow The Hiking Ferret but their bond was so inspiration. DIP Oliver DIP Cheech and Brady (mine).

    I watched this because I'm always trying to give my ferrets the very best and it turns out I'm already doing all these things, so that's validating! My ferrets have their own ferret proofed room and don't go in a cage. I work from home currently so I let them free roam my immediate area until they all start falling asleep in various places 😆 (checking on them constantly of course because I'm a worry wart). They don't try to sleep near me though, so I might try sleeping in their room one night. Great video! Thank you!
