      Ill copy and paste the comment I left about what worked for my ferrets. Also I would buy a a good pee cleaner with enzymes to get rid of any odor in the house. If they smell it in a corner, they will keep using the area as a bathroom. I use OUT! Stain and Odor Remover...its awesome. You can get it at Walmart or on Amazon. You can even put it in laundry. :)
      " I have some tips to share! When you get a new animal there is always a trial and error period before figuring out what works. My ferrets have always done great with using the litter box in their cage...but not so much when they are let out. They had three favorite spots to go on my wood floors. I tried putting litter boxes in those spots but they would just push the litter box out of the way (or play in it) and then go on the floor beside it. (I don't know how anyone uses puppy pads...mine just play with those or steal them lol). I didnt think it was a big deal because I would clean it up right away. But recently I noticed the house would start smelling like pee any time i mopped. I took up the floor boards where they had been going...and found that the urine had soaked through even though I had been cleaning it up quickly. (It took a year for it to get that way.) So I replaced the bad boards and the backing underneath and set out to find a fool proof solution...and I found it! I just bought some VERY thick silicone pads from Amazon (Ill leave the link). They are made for putting under a litter box. I worried that the ferrrets would chew them up or move them...but they can't! These pads are so thick that even if they chew on them they can't leave bite marks! And they are too heavy for them to run off with lol. I just place the pads in their favorite potty spots and waah laah! Problem solved! They now potty directly on the pads and my floor is safe. I just clean it up after they go! Here is the Amazon link if anyone is interested www.amazon.com/dp/B019ZSDDOC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share.
      I also agree with what she said about having them go in their litter box before being let out to play. That works great for my boy ferret. My girl has a one track mind though and if she knows its play time all she cares about is being let out of the cage. I take her to her potty spot outside of the cage and have her go there before playing and that works for her. They also will not potty on their beds. I have several large beds for when they are outside of the cage. If there is place they try to potty that I dont want them to go on, I just put a bed there and that keeps them from using that spot as a bathroom. Placing a blanket or rug there usually works also."
      Good luck! :)

    It's hilarious to me that ferrets are smart enough to fake poop to be let out, but they don't give any effs about bothering to go back to the cage to poop.

    I currently have 4. The only one that needed potty training was the 1st out of the 4. He was the lone ferret for about 6 months. We had a little cage for him & he knew he wasn't allowed to come out until he pooped..... So he started faking it. Lol. Even now, he's gunna be 5 in March & all of them have been free roam for about 3½-4 years. But he knows he's not coming downstairs with me until he poops. So when I say, "Buddy, go potty." He'll back his butt up, lift his tail halfway, wait about 1 second & walk away. I can tell when he's actually trying or just trying to humor me by his tail & he squats a little when he's actually gunna go. He also leaves something behind on the puppy pad when he really goes. Lol. He's the only one, since as ferret math happened, the newest addition would just go where the older one(s) went. So he was really the only one who was potty trained. We did both corner litter pans & puppy pads. We would take them with us if we went to see my mom & since people don't tend to have a litter pan hanging around, puppy pads are very convenient to throw a couple in your purse & throw them away when you leave. So we trained with both. After we got the 3rd ferret though, the litter pan would be full after 3 hours, so it was easier & cheaper to switch to puppy pads. Plus, they can wipe their butts after they go on the pad instead of my carpet. Lol.

      That is so awesome! I love hearing success stories. I agree, puppy pads are just so much more convenient sometimes.

    We didn't cage our ferretts so that method was a nonstarter. When they were young we let them sleep at night in an open travel cage, with a poo box nearby. The interesting thing for us is we used vocals in potty training. Every time I brought the ferret to a poo box I would say "Gå på do" which means go to the bathroom in norwegian. we picked up with the treats for good behaviour as you describe. As they got older, I could look right at my ferret and say gå på do, and it would run to the litterbox. As you say, after a while one gets to know when a ferret has to go so when I wanted him to take a poo break, I would tell him. Sarek was really good with it. Some mistakes we made were poo boxes that had a lip that was too high, but I started to use winter shoe mats. I wonder if others have been able to verbally train their fuzzballs

    My daughter's ferrets always go to sleep under the back corner of our massive couch, they can't be retrieved. We have 2 litter box locations & 2 feed stations. One always goes to box but the other one doesn't. Ferrets bring so much joy, I cannot in good conscience keep them in a cage so we set up a pen for them but when they are "trapped" together they fight and hiss at each other, outside the pen they are perfectly friendly & playfully interacting. Thank you for all your great information.

    Hi my name is Chris and I used to have 2 female ferrets and in the bottom of the cage I would put down cedar on the metal base. And on the hard wire I would use regular carpet in the cage and walk ways. And my Mom would clip their nails we would use Ferret Tone or the other brown liquid gel. First, I guess I need to thank you for our new addition to our family. My daughter fell in love with your videos and ferrets and been asking me for one for months. I finally got her ferret last week for Xmas. Is just us 2 and I can see already how much happiness her new ferret has brought her. The ferret (Penny) is only 4-month-old and she training to train her but there is something particular with her. She does NOT like to poop on the pads. I don't know why but she will move them before pooping. She will even wait for me to clean the cage, it will hold her poop until I close the cage and she is able to move the pad away and do it in the corner. ☹ the pee goes under the pad, poop between the cage and the floor. is madness! This video was so helpful, Thanks!

    I’m planning/hoping to get a couple ferrets by the end of the year, so these vids should hopefully be helpful. I’ve told a few of my relatives of my plan and most of them seem uncomfortable or even grossed out by it, apparently my aunt thinks they’re too vicious; I tried to argue that they’re really just like smaller cats, but they weren’t convinced (but they won’t be living or caring for them so it’s not their business, really.)

    Hey, my ferrets are older (3.5 and 2.5 ish) and they both came to me as 8 week olds, and potty trained. And immediately they both stopped using rhe box. They go beside the box, even when i lay towels and blankets down. They'll go anywhere they want in the house, usually the same 2 or 3 corners, but sometimes just in the middle of the floor. Litter boxes always get ignored or played in. My female absolutely DESTROYS pee pads within seconds of placing one down. I've used every cleaner I can find to remove odors and have rearranged as much as possible to encouage them. They will only use a box if I catch them in the act and place them in, and they KNOW they get a treat afterwards. Now for the shocker..... I work at a pet store and we get new ferrets every few months or so and I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM training any other ferret I've been in contact with. So I don't think it's me. And i have a feeling if I can get my male to use the box my female will do it automatically (she's already pretty good about running into the cage when she's playing and has to go, but again, she'll go beside or behind the box). And yes, they're fixed, which I've heard un-neutered ferrets can be more stubborn but that's not the case here. This is my absolute last resort SOS before I'm just destined to clean up ferret poop the rest of my life.

      @@d.sanchez7687 my duo go to the vet once a year for their shots and checkups they're both perfectly healthy. And their droppings are normal looking (colour texture etc) and they do go intentionally-- they'll usually stop whatever they're doing and run to their favorite corner. Sometimes if they're really excited about something they wait too long and then that's when they go in an odd place because they just can't make it to the corner I think. They just choose not to use the box as far as I can tell.

    Tape does not help with tearing up the potty pads!! They are relentless on destroying them as well as kicking litter out of the box. I’m at a loss

    • @trexpaddock
      @trexpaddock 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With my ferrets, they will kick out, and/or play with/in the litter if it is 'to clean'. That seems to make them think it is to play with/in, and will even motivate them to poop somewhere else. I find if I keep a small amount of poop in the litter box after I scoop/clean it, it helps them to not do that.
      I don't know about the pads . . . maybe get a couple of welcome maps to hold down the front side of the pads too. I can't say I have tried that myself, however it may be worth a shot.

    I have some tips to share!
Placing a blanket or rug there usually works also. Good luck! :)

      @TheModernFerret  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that is a really clever solution! I will have to try this myself with moose and see if it works - thanks for sharing your experience, I think the best way to improve everyone's ferret experience is to share tips and tricks that work just like yours ♥

      @Mila 1228 the reason why I wouldn’t do that is because you are trying to get them to potty there, not sleep so if you just “allow” them to sleep there they will think that’s what you’re supposed to do and they will keep pooping everywhere else and sleeping in the litter box

      @@TheModernFerret Well they live in the house. I have 2 large cages (4 floors in each) connected with tubes, so they have quite a lot of room when they aren't running around my living room! Lol!
      Sometimes they are all up before I wake up and sometimes I have to wake them! Lazy buggers! While I make myself a coffee they wake up and use the litter trays (I have 2 as sometimes they want to go at the same time!) And then I let them out for a run. While they are out playing with all their toys and stealing things that I've forgot to move out their way, I clean the litter trays (its easier while they are distracted! 😂
      They can still have accidents but its very rare. If they are out playing and they need to go poop, they just head back into the cage, poop, then come back out to play. After awhile they take themselves off back to bed......all except Ziva, she likes to curl up under the bookcase. But, a sqeaky toy soon brings here out as she knows they get an egg yolk once they are all back in the cage. 😊

  • @IsaFromUruguay
    @IsaFromUruguay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay so this is so weird
    My ferret doesn't have a lot of accidents.. it's going really well! When I'm home, he can free roam as long as he poops/pees when he wakes up. Then I'll open his cage.
    BUT!! My ferret is sometimes so impatient to go out of the cage.. He PRETENDS to poop. He does the stance and most of the time I can see when hes faking but then it takes so long for him to actually poop and I want him to play and have fun before I go to work when I'm not working from home. So he wants to go out asap to play but with this behavior it only takes longer and I have to keep an eye on him longer so that I can praise him when he ACTUALLY goes
    Did anyone else experience this?

    Very informative video. Wish you would have been around at the start of our Ferret adventure. We use paper bedding in the cage vs. a litterbox. It works also but is more mess and maintenance. Instead of litterboxes and pads outside of the cage we use Bounty Paper Towels in the potty corners. This has worked out well for us and is less expensive than pet pads. Sometimes our girl though just will poop where she wants to. Ferrets are highly independent and somedays our wakes up and just looks at you and you know its gonna be a 'bad ferret' day. She has attitude. It's fleeting though and ordinarily she's very easy to care for and to love.
