- This set is a lot of fun to use and a nice value. I love that you can keep all of your supplies and finished paintings compactly together. I also think it would make a pretty excellent gift. amzn.to/3XJavMo *affiliate link

My opinion has not changed on this paint since I posted my first review 6 years ago, you can see that review here: • Wow! Cheap paint?!? Pr...
Pros:
Price
Useful storage box/travel workspace
The paints are extremely transparent and easy to use
The paper included is nice (100% cotton)
The tin is a sturdy 48 half pan tin.
Included 36 transparent watercolors and 12 metallics
There is room for brushes as well
The depth of the top layer is 1/4" or so and the bottom layer is around 3/4"
Cons:
None, I love this paint and the new case! If I had to pick a con it would be that there is no open stock availability (but you can buy a set of the 36 colors in tubes to refill.)

Hi Lindsay! Just wanted to let you know that I, along with most of your regular viewers, love your longer videos, especially watercolor swatching. It’s relaxing and just feels like I’m hanging out with a good crafty friend. And great review, as always!
Oh thank you!
Unboxings -- I'm not one who needs to see all of the packaging being removed, but I so love seeing the new stuff. I have loved all of the Paul Rubens watercolor products, including the Meiliang. Honestly, I was surprised by how much I did love it. I wish they could offer some open stock options.
Here's a fun tip I learned from an experienced watercolor artist -- one that should work perfectly with this new kit:
You can soak a piece of watercolor paper for a few minutes so that it's well saturated. When it's ready, pick it up, then lay it down onto the acrylic lid of that new kit box. Make sure that the whole surface of the paper has contact with the acrylic (no air bubbles), then let it dry until the surface is just right for painting -- the point where it glistens, like you'd want it for wet-on-wet. Otherwise, just let it dry. The paper will be stuck onto the acrylic until you peel it off. You can paint without any buckling or even the bendies. No taping involved.
Good idea! I've done that on plexiglass ot a cutting mat and it works great!
@@thefrugalcrafter Well there you go. For me it was an old acrylic box frame I was never going to use, but didn't want to just toss. With this kit, you've got yourself a twofer -- nearly always a good thing. :)
I stashed all my neocolor 2s in mine and the ones I'm currently using for a picture can fit in the thinner first layer! Waterbrush can fit in the bottom area and it works great!
Hmmm, I have a bunch of loose Neos, that sounds like a good idea
That's a great idea!
I do not do pearl
I appreciate how you compared the extruded pans to the poured as i was super curious about that too. I'm happy they seem the same as I probably use Meiliang paints the most 😊
The word “turquoise” derives from French meaning “from Turkey” and was the word originally used to describe minerals and gemstones that were greenish-blue in colour because they were brought to France from mines in the Middle East via Turkey. I think that they are trying to translate Turquoise to English or in China, similar shades might be referred to as Turkish blue instead of turquoise.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I have enough watercolors. 😂
I have the Mei Liang 36 set, so I bought the clipboard on Amazon. I paid $9.99 at the time, and they come in many pretty colors. ❤
That is awesome!
Love swatching videos!!
Thanks 😊
I always learn something new when you swatch paints!
The storage clip board looks very useful 🎉
It really is!
I have way too many paints and all artist or professional grade paint... But I must say this kit is really enticing me. The box itself is amazing I don't need to lug my bag with me I would have everything I need right in the clipboard!!!
Yup
Lindsay, you are so AMAZING!!! Love all your videos! Thanks for sharing ❤
You are so welcome!
I bought the medium-size Meiliang watercolor and I have loved that thing for so many years. It sits well loved in my travel bag still.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
This looks like a cool set! Thanks for sharing!
Perfect review day..just in time for prime sales! ❤
Yup! Paul rubend will have lots of deals!
Nice!!! If I didn't already have this 48 Meiliang set I would jump at the chance to get it with the clipboard. It looks sturdy. I am still confused on "cool blue, warm blue". I did try to use this Meiliang set on a tutorial and quickly got confused and went back to my Cotman. But the Meiliang colors are really pretty and they wet really quickly. thanks for the review!!! HUGS
Warm blues are blues that lean toward purple (like untramarine) whereas cool blues lean toward green like pthalo blue or Prussian blue or turquoise.
I don’t know why but i just love it when you review watercolor palettes especially Mei Liang Pretty Excellent sets. Im guessing its because I love them so much and its great to hear a professional agrees that they are a great budget starter set. I brought the 48 pan set when they had the BOGO free a bit ago. I just pulled it out and opened it for an in-person class im teaching and I felt the glitter/metallics were quite nice compared to my 48 set of tinge metallic set, which I believe are superior white labeled. I also brought 5 new set of the 36 set of Mei Liang Pretty Excellent for my students to keep and as i was going through them for quality control before the first day of class. I noticed some of the papers were stickers like usual, but there were several that were fuller wrapped around the pan and weren't stickers. I wish I would have taken better note of it, at the time I didn't think anything other than, they charged package. My students have already settled into using their palettes, so I can't double check how many and if they were extruded pans. Im just thrilled the quality is still so good! Thanks for sharing!!
These are the ones that were extruded in my most recent purchase in Aug 2024 of the 36 set:
109 Cadmium Yellow
206 Deep Magenta/Crimson Lake Deep(old)
231 Deep Violet/Dioxazine violet(old)
139 Sky blue/Coerulean blue hue(old)
327 Fresh Blue/Intense Blue(old)
538 Prussian Blue
322 Payne's Grey
696 Emerald green/ viridian(old)
447 Olive Green
744 yellow Ochre
337 Coal Black/ Lamp black
I found one of my students swatches that got left behind in class and I was able to see which ones may have extruded pans. Its interesting my list is a bit different than yours...as long as it's the same or better quality. I'll be a ver happy customer.
Thanks, I wonder if they are switching them all over?
Thanks Lindsay. It's a very good deal with the 20% coupon makes it only $43.20 for all that ! 36+12 metallic, papercand that really handy organized case and clipboard: excellent. They could sell just the case for nearly that🎉
That is awesome!
I'm all stocked up with various watercolors and gouache, but I do love a chatty swatch sesh. Thx!👍🎨
You and me both!
Lovely review; thank you!!🙏🏾 🎉
You are so welcome!
Hullo Lindsay, nice review with the nurses clipboard! I had one years ago, but I broke it and simply didn’t replace it. I have no interest at this time in purchasing any watercolor paints. I just made a good basic set for a niece with a collection of DaVinci watercolors. I love starting a person out with the split primary colors and then add a couple of my favorites or if they have a favorite color put one in! She loves teal so I know she will love the new Charlie O’Blue or Seaglass. I do have the 37ml tube of Cobalt Turquoise but I hesitate to include heavy metals just because she is younger but she has had a children’s set and has made some wonderful paintings! Thank you for sharing your opinions on these paints once again. It did get a little confusing when flipping back and forth with the poured or extruded pans! Still well done!
Sorry about that 😆
This kit is really cool. When you said it was like a stamping platform, I wonder if it could be with some craft foam sheets stacked in the bottom! I didn't think of this idea, Once, I searched for how to DIY a stamping platform and someone did it with an Ikea picture frame/box that was hinged. That stuck in my memory.
Lindsay, my darling girl, I love you, but sadly my wallet doesn't share that feeling 😅😅😅
Oh no, if it's any consolation my wallet didn't love me either lol!
I’m so excited!!! I’ve been looking at this and wanted to know what you thought and couldn’t find a review from you until this morning!! 🎉 I’m going to get it - and I’m not angry about the 20% off!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hope you like it!
Hello, Lindsay. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
I'd like to get an empty box! Don't need the paint but enjoyed the swatching and discussion!
Here's the box empty: amzn.to/3BBbNAj
❤ Thanks Lindsay
Thanks for review Lindsay. These were marked down to 43.00 and some change today so I got it.
Excellent!
That was a fun video.
Thanks 😊
Nice watercolors. As for sparklies, I've tried everything from Fine-Tec to Paul Rubens to Hobby Lobby to Prima. The swatches can vary, but honestly when painted on a painting, I see very little difference. I kind of just love paint. Ha.
Thanks for the tips!
Lindsay's spidey sense leading her to open an extruded pan immediately :)
Thanks so much for sharing!!
You are so welcome!
I'm thinking Turkey Blue means Turkish Blue? Googling it brings up a muted turquoise and also something called a Nazar, or eye bead, which seems to be usually made in a cobalt blue color with a turquoise "iris." It's an amulet to protect against the evil eye.
I looked on Amazon and their is a Nursing storage clip board for under 20 dollars!
This is the on from the kit amzn.to/3BBbNAj
Hi Lindsay, Wonderful video! Have you ever tried the Schpirerr Farben Watercolors?
No but according to Becca from Natto Soup the plastic box is Superior paints which is the same as the Artify set I reviewed.
Synchronicity: I just bought a storage clipboard to use on the couch but mine has a separate smaller compartment where I can put pencils and brushes. I already have the original 36 Mei Liang. 😊
So cool!
Hi Lindsay! What is the cutter you are using? BTW love your shows!
What is the better deal Paul Riubens 48 color set with new colors or this set of Melaing?
First! Love your videos Lindsay!
Yay! Thank you!
What is the difference between the $15 set by Arrtx and the Lightwish $ 20 set? Thank you for your informative videos! Not going to sleep, hanging on every word😊
There shouldn't be a difference, it's rhe same company. Sometimes they test prices or turn over old stock. They might be trying to move inventory out of one warehouse so they mark down all the stock st one location. Get the deal!
Do you have a link for the original clipboard box you have your markers in?
Let me see if I can find it, this is the same box as this set tho: amzn.to/3BBbNAj
This is similar to my marker box: amzn.to/3YdIcFS
Lol! I did fall asleep, but it's no reflection on you. I'm a caregiver, I'm exhausted and all it took was for me to lie down.
Aww, get some rest, you deserve it:)
What is the difference in extruded pans and poured pans?
20% off for prime in the states!
I think the top part is for single sheets of paper
It's thick enough to hold several sheets.
How do you tell if poured or not???
You can tell by the way the watercolor is shaped in the pan. If it looks like it's been extruded through a machine (like pasta, for example), then its extruded! A dried down version would be if you poured paint from a tube into a pan and let it dry out
The poured ones atr flat and flush with the pan or may have a dent but extruded look domed, a bit like a pillow.
Maybe they meant peacock 🦚 blue, but it was lost in translation, so it became turkey 🦃 blue 😂
Could be 😆
Or the country?
I hope you are reading my comments to you on your substack. I am livid.
Yes, I responded as soon as I saw the comments today.
