This is an instant classic, forget about Casablanca, forget about Ben Hur, The Godfather, The Blue Lagoon, or One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest: this is the greatest piece of movie spectacle ever put together. And it really makes you think deeply about the complexities of life and after-life. It’s a thinking man’s picture, one could certainly argue. Will re-watch often.
A common literary device in fiction where the hero (sometimes its a villain) fights someone early in the story and of course the protagonist wins with no more than moderate difficulty to show how tough they are. Technically he won the fight (by default since the opponent backed out) but I love how the fight never happened. The other guy backing down in fear and not fighting him knowing he would get slaughtered was a greater way to show how b@d@$$ the hero was than him winning the fight since it would not ONLY show that he was a great fighter but that he had a huge REPUTATION and people knew to fear him.
I think IRL they would have rules that no professional MMA or ex professioal MMA fighters would be allowed to participate. It looked like one of those amateur fight night things.
The original was much more focused on establishing the bar as a dangerous place. This movie feels so much more focused on the traumatic backstory of Jake gylenhaal’s character. His performance is good, but the movie itself has a story that’s so much less fun than the original, though they try to present really depressing things through the lens of an action movie. Like he tries to get himself hit by a train and it’s played off like an action beat for some reason. Jake does a good job but the movie has no identity and is carried entirely by him and Connor macgregor, who was brought on just to play himself
I keep thinking that this movie looks pretty decent but they never should have tried to remake Road House. Road House is considered a classic and trying to remake it is just stupid, very few remakes are considered anything other than bad. They should have called it something else and just moved on. The people who liked RH would enjoy the nod to the movie.
That has got to be the most ridiculous tough guy with a sketchy past scene ever. He voluntarily gets stabbed in the gut by the dude, having no reaction, and the man let's go of the knife _still_ in his gut and and runs away in fear of his alpha threat energy.
