  • Portpatrick is one of the most attractive coastal villages in Scotland.
Cut into steep cliffs, Portpatrick village was built around 700 years ago adjacent to the ruins of Dunksey Castle on the far west coast of Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland.
It offers spectacular views of the Northern Irish coastline which is just 21 miles further west with picturesque cliff top coastal walks and fine sandy beaches nearby.
The Southern Upland Way, a long distance walk across Scotland, starts at Portpatrick and makes it's way through stunning scenery to Cockburnspath on the East coast of Scotland.
The magnificent ruins of Dunskey Castle are picturesquely perched on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the Irish Sea.
First recorded in the 14th century, this castle was destroyed around 1500 by the McCullochs of Myrton and Cardoness.
The massive towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt - the same family that owned the Castle of St John in Stranraer - and the long wing to the north was added in the 1620's. By 1700 the whole building was derelict.
The defensive ditch on the landward side is all that survives of an earlier Adair Castle.
Less than a mile from the pretty town of Portpatrick, near the Dunskey Castle you'll find Castle Bay Holiday and Residential Park, ideal for those looking to pitch up their tent or park up their touring caravan or motorhome.
