What is it about railroads that makes them so acceptable in nature? Even non railfans will usually see beauty in this pairing of technology with the landscape. Like a magnificent bridge across a pristine canyon, the two forms of beauty just seem to compliment each other.
Railroading is still the coolest form of transportation to watch. This video is a perfect example of that. Railroads move freight by far and away cheaper than any other form of transportation. Regarding passengers, yes airlines are the fastest and are cheaper than trains. With passenger trains however, the trip is the highlight of your vacation. The views are breathtaking, and best of all you can sit down with family and friends and enjoy a nice meal at the same time. Great video.
Stunning Dan! Drone footage like this, makes you realise (from over here in the UK ), just how huge these American freight trains are.... fixed footage from the lineside is ok, but when you see it all in 3D like this, it just brings it home much more.... Brill !
8:15 and 10:50 are just beatiful! Aerial chase scenes where the subject has a fixed position on the screen are my weakness, and boy, my heart is melting from this one!
I''ve poked around the OT here and there over the years, including the old line near Madras. But I just wanted to thank you for this and the Washy Line sequence, you've shown me spots that I had no idea existed and I'm honestly disappointed they haven't been photographed by others, at least not to my knowledge. Keep opening those horizons.
I loved the Trunk. The Canyon along the Deschutes on the North end is my favorite piece of railroad anywhere. I know what part of the Washy you're talking about too and that is some extremely rugged terrain! The Pacific Northwest has some absolute fascinating pieces of railroading. I captured some more scenes from the OT about a month ago that I'll be putting up in the next video or two hopefully within a few weeks.
I'm sure my TH-cam algorithm will pop it right up. You're right about the PNW keeping a lot of "fascinating" secrets. For example, I learned about the Trinidad Loop while riding a gondola at four in the morning. That was before Google Earth, of course. So I'm happy to see droners such as you and Scott Hiddleston putting in the time and effort for this stuff, AND getting great footage.
Man I like the footahe.I wonder how much turbulence closer to the train for some awesome close ups? it is a drone and should be stable enough in the canyons right? Anyway enjoyed your clip very much. The music was great as well
There was another channel that had some equally great content like this but I guess was taken down. All videos pulled, even out of my history. Can’t remember the name of the channel, but like this, was pretty cool stuff. Thanks.
Yeah people keep mentioning that to me... I had seen some of his stuff and he was a skilled flier but I couldn't get passed how overly saturated in color everything was. I think it's best to keep it all as organic as possible. My opinion.
@Railfan Dan: At the 11:20 minmark the consist is passing by a wayside park. Can you tell me where that is? I'm pretty sure I've stopped there at sometime. :) Fantastic footage. I applaud your skill at maintaining height and distance from the train, while perfectly (near perfectly? LOL) tracking the consist ! EDIT: Found it. Went Google earth and followed the tracks. Yes, I have been there. :)

That is enormous cumulative horse power. I think the Locos are controlled electonically and probably have two drivers at the front only. @@TheRailfanDan
Hi Dan - Love this footage. Would it be possible to license a clip of the footage for a documentary we're producing on James J. Hill and the Great Northern Railway?
There are certain locations on railroads called sidings where a side track is used so that trains can meet and pass each other to achieve this. Most freight rail lines in the US work that way.
@@TheRailfanDan try to google location (not so easy as google isn't rail enthusiast, very difficult to see railway lines) I-84E, 197S to Tygh Valley, join 216 (Sherars Bridge Hwy), then about 3km unnamed road, is that correct?
@@franzbrunner499 Not really unfortunately. I know most of them are probably references in several books but I can't think of one book alone that might mention them all.
I'm a fan of unit trains and this video took my breath away. I have occasionally heard of the Oregon Trunk Line, but with your videos, I'm acquiring an appreciation for it. You've gotten another subscriber. Perchance do you know the destination of this train?
This is by far the most realistic and detailed HO train layout I have ever seen!

That was an award winning video. One of the best I've seen. 👍👍👍👍
The Deschutes river is so beautiful. I got to drive that one while traveling for work and I couldn't believe it. Makes me want to move to Oregon
Fantastic landscape. Fantastic trains. Fantastic movie. Thanks a lot!
Glad you enjoyed!
Hello from Germany.
This was one of the best vid I see on TH-cam. Thumbs up !!!!! I add it to my favorite list .
That was epic. The irrigation canal crossing at Madras is a very interesting design.

What could be finer a cool train with the right background music.
Nicely done! Those drones are a real game changer for the action shooter. They could be the one thing that gets me interested in railfanning again!

Incredible scenario and fantastic trains, very well filmed. Time 05:05 and on, what a shot!

Fantastic Scenerie !!!
Nice video, Dan! That flat area at 8:30 would be great for a home, small park or housing development if more foliage were planted.
Amazing! Love all your videos.

The Crooked River Gorge. That's some Oregon right there. Not too far from Smith Rock.
Deschutes River the first half
Beautiful!

Yep depending on the drone they're stable between 15-25mph winds and sometimes higher.
Well done plus the choice of music.

you ever get concerned flying blind backward for long distances ????? power lines crossing the canyons always comes to mind
nice flying
ok, i don't understand how another train can go the opposite way. Or is there another track for trains that go the other direction?
FANTASTIC...🙂👌🙏
Hello! would you mind if I used this footage for a project I have? I really only need about a 10 second clip of it but wanted to ask for permission!
I don't see another adjacent track. Can trains go the opposite way on this track? How is that done?
There are certain locations on railroads called sidings where a side track is used so that trains can meet and pass each other to achieve this. Most freight rail lines in the US work that way.
@@TheRailfanDan Thanks! I need to study more on these. I'm fascinated by real trains and model ones.
at 2:00 the locomotives cross a bridge -can this place be seen from a road, hike lookout, or is it too complicated to access? thanks for info
Oh yes there is a road directly above it on the other side of the river. You can kind of see where it's cut into the side of the hill.

It would be nice if the drone was a little
lower so the road name on the car could be read for us model railroaders. We model what we see.
Flying forwards that is easy enough but flying backwards I've got to stay high enough to not risk running the drone into a trees or a hill!
Annoying music. I want to hear the train.
Drones don't record audio because you would only be able to hear the buzzing of propellers if they did.
I love USA I love bnsf
thats a long ass train
