I don't agree that the video was too long. I get frustrated when I start watching a video only to have it cut before the end of the train arrives. Nice job!
Scott - never too long for me. Another great capture by you. It is fascinating to listen from about the 1.00m mark where the EMD's helpers' exhaust and cooling fan whine is more evident than the lead locomotives. That drone of yours is such a steady platform - it was very stabilised vision from it. And an EMD bringing up the rear. Another great presentation by you. Thanks.
Thanks Mike. I'm getting so confident of the drone's stability I'm starting to just position it, start it recording and then concentrate on my regular camera. It will even come home when it's battery gets low if I forget about it.
FINALLY someone records where they go after the first horseshoe before this all you got to see is trains passing each other on the lower horseshoe now I understand Mullans Pass. thank you
I have watched this video numerous times and I love it especially with the sound going through the amplifier to big speakers the whole house shakes [ my wife hates it], the drone camera work is fantastic not the slightest sign of movement . Excellent recording 5 stars.
Great job Scott! I really like how you used the drone as a camera platform for a stable stationery perspective. The editing including the audio was perfect.
Great job capturing the true beauty of trains.... I posted else where .. I know this section of track as I worked for a utility contractor on a crew that rail plowed fiber optic into Helena. What an interesting but long days job to plow cable off a flat bed car towed by an engine.
Way back at the beginning of the Powder River Basin coal rush the BN thought hard about how to ship more coal in fewer trains. They came up with a 13-segment coal car 278'-4" long between the pulling faces. Built one train set of 23 cars. The Trough Train. It had its problems but as a modeler, I just love the way it snakes around curves. Sad they are all gone. Would have loved to see it at this viewpoint.
This was Northern Pacific rails, the tunnel at the top of the hill was daylighted as part of the expansion project, if it is where I think it is located ...
I love the sound of those MRL helpers, 4300hp times 4 all in harmony. I love the sound of big diesel motors, I got a little baby diesel, VW Golf 2.0 TDI. Wish it could sound like these!
Very Nice Video ! Thank you for Sharing ! Greatings from Germany ;)

the pressure on the inside rail must be tremendous.!!!!!!! it's a wonder that they don't " string-line" the train. you must be a really good engineer and have REALLY GOOD power to run THAT TRAIN and not have problems. ( from one with 20 years of running DP coal trains ).
Man the American rail system certainly gets the most out of their locos, talk about putting them to the test, this is one long train and quite a steep gradient to boot, we have long coal trains in Australia but nothing like this, I would hate to be at a level crossing waiting for this to pass, this is excellent video footage and please don't apologise, I wish it was longer, oh and does anyone know the gradient of this Iron Ridge track.
Thanks EMD. I use a sound devices mixer and an AT BP4025 mic, both of which are very very quiet and allow me to turn up the audio a lot in final edit. Plus it is kind of a box canyon there which keeps the sound in
Nice video, glad you caught both trains and we were able to see the length of these monsters. Only thing I wasn't thrilled with is the distance, you might as well filmed it from the International Space Station.
Gary Plastek I know, I wanted to drop down and get closer but didn’t want to get caught in the trees below. If I could do it again I would do a scout out run beforehand
What a place where the engineer can see the end of his train across the ridge 200 feet below him coming up behind him. This place is mesermizing all train guys should see it just once.
Hi, Scott. Nice job and I like it very much. As a pro artist I know quality when I see it. This is great and the sound is wonderful as someone else commented. Could you drop the name of the drone model/maker and if the camera is stock to the drone. If not specify what camera please. I'd like to get the same sort of equipment. This is some of the best and "heard" I have seen. Kudos of the first degree. PS: I'm a pro artist. I know quality.
Thanks J. The drone is a DJI Inspire 1 with the standard x3 camera that comes with it. It's ancient by today's standards but still smooth steady and reliable. Video is recorded at 1080P60. The camcorder is a Canon XF100, and the audio is recorded into that. I use a Sound Devices MixPre D to provide phantom power and for its absolutely stunning limiters; they let nothing distort. The mic is an Audio Technica BP4029 stereo field mic. I put the Canon video, drone video and the audio into FCPX on a Mac and I cut and paste audio to match the view as needed, since the drone at times is well away from the audio being recorded. Let me know if I've missed anything and thanks for the kind comments.
@@ScottHiddelston .. I know this section of track..we rail plowed fiber optic into Helena ( basically we chained a trachoe to a flat car with a special tooth on the end of the boom..stretched it out to the edge of the tracks had a engine pull us and 3 other flat cars with rolls of optic .... ( equipment rental i.e.: engine w/ men 4 flat cars ..$1 mill a day 😳) another co. Had the contract before us ..we picked up where they left off..no wonder our company was adamant about getting it done in 2 weeks. Gotta love 14 to 18 HR wrk days.
Great use of the drone and editing! I notice the mid-train helpers don't go up to notch 8 until they come out of the curve. Maybe something to do with stress on the couplers?
Thanks Cliff. The sound has been time-shifted to match the drone video, so it doesn't really sync. From what I hear on the scanner, the engineer on the lead locos has the helper engineer go up and down to suit him.
What an awesome video and thanks for providing. Question, on the coal train, what railroad logo was on the middle set of dark color locos? Don't recognize that RR logo.
That was utterly fantastic. Where were you with the microphones? Gosh, to have something like that when it was SD 45s and slagged out covered wagons and Geeps slipping and spinning. I'm jealous. A definite 10.01.
Dave Skinner a sincere thanks Dave. Glad you enjoyed it. The mic was set up on the opposite side of the drone , where the opening shots were filmed from. Thanks again
I watched it and listened to it again. It's that good. Reminds me of a couple times at Pritchard Loop (U 30 Cs) and on the Moffat Road along Oak Creek with some tunnel motors in full scream. I hate you.
Yep. You are doing good stuff. Orders of magnitude better than 99 percent of foamer wannabees. You understand image and sound and that's just too rare, not just here on You Tube. In Montana, it's statistically impossible, but I'll take these odds. You keep getting better, you're increasingly taking full advantage of what comes before you, something almost nobody else seems to be able to grasp. That aside, I will "brag" one time that I decided to pace five units of "green era" SD 45 road power up the west side of Mullan. No pictures, no tape, just a window rolled down on a perfect fall afternoon at 17 mph. The only thing better would have been sitting in the right front seat with a sandwich and coffee.
I'd also like to mention the panning on the sound if stock to the photography was very realistic. Or did you modify the sound in the studio. Either way, kudos.
Great shots of the valley Scott. You are a wizard with the ball head and now it looks like you got the touch with the drone as well. Loved the way you corrected the shot by backing up and then recomposing. That is one long coal train. 8 pushers. Just to be sure, is that coal train heading west? Oil cans heading east?
Thanks Gra Gor. Yes that coal train is heading west, likely for export to Asia, and the oil train is an empty, heading east to the Dakotas for a refill.
I cant believe that it doesn't just pull sideways off the track, like a piece of rope being pulled would tend to straighten out? Nice drone work also, very still.
Sometimes they do Bradley!! It's called "String lining" and it can happen if a train is built incorrectly with light cars in the middle or front of the consist. Gregg:-)
Trains are loaded for the steepest grade with top speed of 10 mph or 16 kph I’ve often gone to sleep with a V12 alco at full throttle when I was a fireman with NSWGR Australia.
I don't agree that the video was too long. I get frustrated when I start watching a video only to have it cut before the end of the train arrives. Nice job!
No apologies needed, I love long trains and the videos that take the time to show the full train.
Thank-You!!
Eastbound and down. You were blessed with a meet. Thanks for sharing
Now there's a new location on my bucket list! One day I hope to make the trip from the UK to the US specifically to get some films like this!
That was incredible to watch!
alussinant un convoi pareil Magnifique
No fast forwarding necessary. Absolutely amazing video. A+
Thanks Herr Scoot airing the outstanding vid and sounds of those "Helpers' ,such symphony of sounds.Your endeavors are unmatched.Bliss
Excellent use of the drone. Well done.
WOW!!!
That was a SHOW!!!👍🏿🥂

A stunningly beautiful video, my friend !! Thank you!!
On the contrary, it's a superb video. You certainly knew how to make these trains interesting
FINALLY someone records where they go after the first horseshoe before this all you got to see is trains passing each other on the lower horseshoe now I understand Mullans Pass. thank you
That grade looks RELENTLESS!
Beautiful photography, well done!
Great camera and drone work. Excellent transitions. And you caught a meet. Thanks.
I have watched this video numerous times and I love it especially with the sound going through the amplifier to big speakers the whole house shakes [ my wife hates it], the drone camera work is fantastic not the slightest sign of movement . Excellent recording 5 stars.
It's amazing how it timed out that they both ended in front of the camera at the same time.
Great camera work, lovely scene!
I love helper engine video. You captured a great one. Excellent video Scott.
iusetano thanks Hans
Really well done. You have captured the essence of railroading with your camera and sound. Thanks.
Absolutely rock steady with that drone. Excellent!
This is amazing. It is time to visit that place of the US once again... ;-)Thank you so much.
A great video of great railroading it doesn't get much better than this, well done
Keith Grafton thanks Keith. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great job Scott! I really like how you used the drone as a camera platform for a stable stationery perspective. The editing including the audio was perfect.
Awesome video! Wish I had scenic railroads near where I live. Keep up the good work!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Fantastic! another for my favorites.
Sorry forgot to mention your name Scott once again great video and great use of the drone.
Beautifully shot! Best train running video on TH-cam, perhaps!
Mark Rose thanks Mark I really appreciate it
You lucky Dog! Would love to be there watching them Boys do there thing. What a great vantage point guy! Great work!

Best RR shot I've seen in months! Nice one. Great stretch of track there.
Thanks Coxy.
Coxy's Railroading thanks Coxy
All I have to say is wow. You have out done yourself again. Thank you for sharing.
Now that is an awesome viewpoint.
Way cool. Thanks for posting this. No apologies necessary for the length of the video. Keep it rolling!

Another ripper Scott! Great to have you back buddy!
Cheers Gregg.
Really enjoyed your video, clean, stayed focused. Thank. You.
Another great catch Scott, that BNSF Ace on end of coal train , just as loud as the MRL Aces , LOL
Cheers Glynn
Holy shit!!! What an amazing video!!! And the sound!!!!! Thank you !!!!!

Love you videos and you don't need to apologize for anything for none are too long.

Beautiful. Awesome. Thank you.
I had no idea they had double tracked all the way up the ridge! I thought the north/west end still ended there just beyond Austin.
Wow! The audio at that distance is unbelievable
Thanks EMD. I use a sound devices mixer and an AT BP4025 mic, both of which are very very quiet and allow me to turn up the audio a lot in final edit. Plus it is kind of a box canyon there which keeps the sound in
Hollywood quality video :)
Excellent video, the scenery is awesome Sir. Man that first train was long,if you straightened it out maybe 2mls ?
Can you imagine getting caught at a railroad crossing with this thing going past? You’d have to book a hotel room for the night!
LoL ...was think the same thing..did ya bring a lunch?
LOL...
Hotel room? I'd sit down right there and watch it. Perhaps get me a six pack? 👍
I was thinking the same thing. 😂
@@shawnhayden6674 Perfect! Almost jealous, thinking about it . . . .
Breathtaking view!
Loved this! 👍
That was an epic view
Great video, totally lost count as to the number of wagons but I'm glad that I was not waiting at a rail crossing!
Love the echo!

Powerful traction motors.
Darn near perfect video! Thanks!
Good stuff, excellent job!
Awesome video
outstanding .
How long would this coal train be and this is a very interesting video too, thanks for posting.
Amazing example of brut power.
Fantastic, love it!
I have a Philips 2.1 mini speaker system plugged into my iPad (5th gen) and this is giving it all that it can handle!! I got it cranked!!

Great video.
I liked the sound of the trains rather than cheesy elevator music.
God must look down and be very proud of His children’s activements.
Nice view from the Drone, where is this located?
Thanks WWT, this is located about 10 miles west of Helena MT on Mullan Pass
@Bulletman7 Wait you didn't get the memo to document the cars...lol

Jim Athey that would be Montana Rail Link Jim. This is their railroad, leased from BNSF
That was mad. 3 locomotives at the front, 4 in the middle and one at the end.
nice perspective.

Did they have a siding at Skyline that was pulled out?
DL541 yes it was pulled out a long time ago.
mesmerizing
Not too long but awesome !!
This is SOoo cool!! I think I see a future James Bond scene where he jumps from one train into a coal pile on the other! : )

How is it possible to move that much weight? With only 3 engines pulling, 4 in the middle and 1 pushing; boggles the mind.
