    Great Video George, Just note guys some turbos have filters in the oil pipes to/from them make sure they are clean or replace them. Crank case breather is there to draw fumes/ moister out of the engine its has the spring as a oneway valve so if you get a "backfire" (not common now days) but if you do get a backfire in the inlet manifold you don't set fire to the oil vapour in the engine , so yes a good point to clean that out while you was in there. And one thing spotted on your bench CG29 NEVER use copper grease on aluminium brake callipers that will introduce a third metal (steel, copper,aluminiun)= electrolyses = stuck pads and callipers degrading and a that VW clunk when you go from forward to reverse baking use high temp grease/ silicon ht grease or Au grease.

Anyways, it seems to have survived the ordeal after some testing. What I'm most curious about is what do you think caused your turbo the fail - do you have any ideas? Also is the car still running ok 6 months later?

    The intake pipe that you mention is a nightmare to get back on (42:26); can you give any hints on how you managed it? I can barely see the pipe, so I'm trying to figure out how I'm supposed to get my hand in there to force it onto the turbo. Did you push it with a tool? Come up from underneath the engine or the side or from the top to the right of the pipe itself? So frustrated. I changed the thermostat and water pump on mine and everything is completed, but I'm not 100% sure that I've got this pipe connected to the turbo as you can't even see the connection. Greatly appreciate any advice/tips!

    Intresting how diffrent versions off the 3.0 engine has diffrent set ups. For example on my 40d twin turbo it has a circle style filter on the head / at top off the engine and nothing at the side. Both turbos live on top of eachother on the left side of the engine where you said the air filter is

    Is it one of those quick connect style boost pipe with an internal o-ring that you're supposed push until it clicks? I had a pita of a time trying to shove it back onto the intercooler side when I replaced my N20's turbo. Like seriously I was pushing so hard the car was straining on the parking brakes. ISTA specifically mentioned that you're supposed to install them dry without any lube, but I gave up and gave it the lightest smear of engine oil. The damn thing clicked right in afterwards and so far hasn't given me any trouble with leaks or popping back off. Maybe you can install it without lube with a new pipe/o-ring, but re-installing an old one, even in good shape, I guess is less forgiving.

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that’s right, needs a lot of force to push it on which it’s hard to do as there is no room in the X5 engine bay😅

  • @neiled44
    @neiled44 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi George, glad to see you got it sorted but what's the coding/mapping you'll need to have done, where will you get it done and how much will it cost? I've seen a few X5 videos on EGR & DPF delete which mention needing to get it mapped or coded out but nobody ever explains what or why it needs doing or where to get it done and how much it costs.

    • @bigjml
      @bigjml ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Biggest problem will be that removing DPF means the vehicle is no longer compliant with Construction and Use Regulations.
      Which makes it illegal to use on the road.
      Being able to pass an MOT is irrelevant

    • @neiled44
      @neiled44 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigjml Thanks George but how can you say that not passing an MOT is irrelevant.... if it doesn't pass the MOT then you can't use it which is pretty relevant to most people! I've been told that examiners are now beginning to look for signs of DPF removal and failing modified cars whether they pass the emissions test or not.

    • @bigjml
      @bigjml ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@neiled44 The reason I say that is some DPF removers justify their position because they gut the filter and refit it and get it through an MOT because either the Tester is incompetent or they have welded it up in a place the Tester can’t see during a Test.
      Thats why an MOT is irrelevant, also because a diesel only has to pass a smoke test, and yes, DPF vehicles do produce some smoke when revved hard when they have some miles on them.
      Construction & Use Regulations are what your car NEEDS to comply with to be used on the road.
      Go and ask a Traffic Copper about it, or look it up.
      A visual inspection by an MOT Tester is just that, a visual inspection that the DPF is fitted
      If you have a DPF gutted/removed you can’t legally sell it without declaring it.
      The vehicle is uninsurable.
      Phone up your Insurer and ask them if they will Insure a car that isn’t Compliant with Construction & Use Regulations.
      This is an interesting channel but it was disappointing to see a DPF removal being performed.
      Would have been better to sort the issue with the EGR and DPF to retain the cars value.
      Though since the Turbo failed soon after it’s probably the issues with the DPF we’re caused by the soon to fail Turbo.
      DPF problems are either a problem with the sensors or an engine problem causing the DPF to clog up.
      Something that would have been obvious in a non DPF diesel as it would have been smoking from the exhaust

    • @neiled44
      @neiled44 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigjml Thanks again for your reply but I fully understand the legalities of the law regarding DPF removal/gutting.
      I've only owned my X5 E70 30sd for a few months and my concerns are over the prevalence of videos and discussions on TH-cam, Facebook and forums suggesting EGR & DPF removal /gutting rather than offering help and advise on overcoming the DPF issues by getting the engine to run right in the first place starting with a regimented preventative maintenance schedule ie. regular servicing to begin with.

    Having undertaken the removal and installation of the turbos on this model of vehicle, I would caution that the access is extremely limited, particularly for the main (large) unit. Should this work be encountered again in the future, then an engine out would be the preferred approach.
