Animal Crossing Multiplayer is a Joke

- Today we look back at the history of Animal Crossing multiplayer, how it's always been slow and needed more to do, how one game was able to break the curse, and how the next brought it back on
Thanks to everyone who helped jump the jaw-dropping amount of hoops in order to get some of the multiplayer functionality back online. Cityfolk was horrendous, dude. At least 4 hours and 6 Wii's. I owe Kevin Domino's. Jon and Kyler too
"Now you can be bored while standing next to each other"

Jello Apocalypse reference
I was thinking about that too when I saw the cover
I remember the first day the game came out and I sent my code in a random reddit chat thinking only a few would show up. Turns out 8 people showed up within the span of 1 minute and it was actual hell. Just sitting there for 8 minutes watching people enter and leave. Never touched online again.
LMAO THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO
Watching 20 minutes of loading screens to interact with players for 3 minutes!! worth it!!
No way I did that on some random forum the minute I got a switch + animal crossing. Received friend requests for up to one and a half year almost every day
It blows my mind how much stuff gets disabled in ACNH multiplayer. No balloon presents, villagers can't hold or do things anymore, no moving furniture, etc. The whole online experience feels like they barely even got the basic parts working, so they cut everything else out.
okay i was going to originally post another Super Bomb Survival reference for the sake of "wow the creator is commenting on this video I found! What a rare occurance" but your interests line up so well with mine that I practically see you every tuesday
so i'm just gonna instead say I agree with this entire statement and also add that an Animal Crossing fangame that instead focuses on online interactions (although fan-held online servers would be difficult to manage) and therefore doesn't have to deal with the expectations or limitations that a story-focused simulation game by Nintendo has to be hindered by, would be very helpful in seeing just how good Animal Crossing multiplayer could actually be if Nintendo really put their heart into it
@@cryodual Since both games were made by Nintendo EPD Group 5, let's hope that the improvements to the online experience in Splatoon 3 (like how you can move around and practice between matches seamlessly) can carry over to the next Animal Crossing game. Other than that, I think the real biggest issue is the lack of dedicated servers for their games; they use Peer2Peer which kind of limits what is possible to do in multiplayer.
Switching to dedicated servers would be a great improvement and would put less load on the console itself during online multiplayer but it seems like most of the people Nintendo don't want to use dedicated servers to host their online games, unfortunately.
@@ConcavePgonsIt's not about "most of the people at Nintendo", it's about if the higher.ups will spend millions of dollars to maintain a big server for several games that sell dozens of millions of copies
Holy hell its polyhex
I think the justification for no furniture moving is to prevent griefing, but I feel that could be solved by having a "friend mode" (allowing you to decorate a town together with a friend) vs "visitor mode" (to prevent new visitors from just messing up your town and leaving)
i fear the series peaked at new leaf and we'll never get back there ever again
New leaf HD remake with new horizons features added would be the definitive animal crossing experience, hope we get that on the switch 2
@@MinFJE nah you'd still be missing what Wild World brought to the table. That needs to be relearned and mastered more than anything else.
@@codyhanson1344 Lol no it doesn’t, we already have city folk with is basically a wild world remaster. New leaf deserves it way more
@@MinFJE If you truly believe that, then you don't know the games well enough. The similarities between the two are mostly just surface level. When you actually earnestly pay mindful attention to the details, you'll know that there is a lot missing/altertered between the two.
The most relevant difference when it comes to this discussion, is that wild world's villagers and special NPCs have a lot more depth, charm, and dynamic personality to them. Wild World truly is peak when it comes to NPC interaction in general, and that aspect of the franchise has always been the core aspect.
@@codyhanson1344 In that case, all that really has to be done for a new leaf remake is to improve that aspect of the villagers, not much more than that whereas wild world would need a lot more to reach new leaf’s and even new horizons level of content
New Horizons’ inability to evolve core features like this makes it stick out like such a sore thumb in the grand scheme. Like a stoplight in the series’ innovative momentum. Next game is now tasked with relearning all the stuff we already learned in 2012, alongside evolving the new formula. We’re either cooked or cooking
I really hope they are cooking cause I do feel like maybe Nintendo learned the criticisms of New Horizons. So hopefully since Animal Crossing is a big series now they can cook on the next one.
New Horizon innovated much more than New Leaf did, it just didn't focus on core features. That's why it's far and away the most successful entry both critically and commercially.
It's also still selling stupidly well because the casual market loves its features.
@@JubbiHubbiall new horizons did was the tiled island building system and DIY. It has nothing else that it innovated on over new leaf. It doesn't even have mini games except for like holidays.
I think what happened is that they were so focused on innovating on the decorating aspect, they sorta forgot about everything else. Literally almost everything besides indoor decorating feels like they weren't thought out all the way.
@@JubbiHubbino it sold best because it was a switch game and because of the pandemic
New Leaf had the best multiplayer experience. I hope they bring that back or refine it in the next entry!
I dont understand how nintendo finally got AC to be a huge IP, and they completely abandoned updating the game when it was thriving. ACNH NEEDED tortimer island & its mini games SO badly. There's nothing to do with friends! The mini games wouldve given players so much to do with each other when playing together
Thought it was quite odd to not include multiplayer fun, especially when they promoted wanting to sell nintendo online so much!
The majority of my time in Animal Crossing is playing solo, but the few times I've played with friends or family it was pretty underwhelming. It's like a few minutes of joy because of the novelty of running around with each other, and then you realize there's nothing to do. But now that it's one of Nintendo's big boy franchises I'm hopeful the next one will be better. The best thing to come out of AC multiplayer is that one time Elijah Wood was like "may i pick some fruit?"
And Aika Village too!
AC has always been a big boy franchise with nintendo, it just caught everyone’s eye bc they released a hyper HD version of what everyone loved in an escapism game back then, only to take away most of what everyone loved and then bring back half of it in a later update which should’ve been in the base game from the jump to work towards. they seriously fumbled new horizons. it goes past any sort of “nostalgia blindness”, it’s just straight up sad how they just threw out an incomplete animal crossing game with a bunch of mini, cool novelty features and mechanics. and the fact that they took away so much of what fans loved and wanted more of, only to add it back once they were berated for it?? sorry but the splatoon team never should have touched animal crossing. they’re perfect working on only splatoon. the animal crossing team from new leaf should’ve stayed throughout the making of acnh….
sorry for ranting 😅
wait i need a video link to elijah wood asking for fruit 😭
the loading screens are literally atrocious. there is no reason for that in 2024 it’s actually painful when you go to treasure islands/have big groups for multiplayer
I mean ACNH is a 2020 game tho.
@@vivid8979 yes, the old age of 4 years ago. Heck, phones didn't even exist in 2020.
Also, updates exist.
That's just the norm for Switch games around the time lol. Don't forget about Mario Maker 2. The devs of that game didn't even originally plan on including friend multiplayer. And when it finally came out, it was laggy as heck! And Smash Ultimate. To this day, it's still very laggy.
I was in disbelief at the multiplayer. Actually so embarrassing for Nintendo. No games, no helping each other decorate and terraform. The loading screens!!! The game is absolutely beautiful with so many details. I'm still very impressed overall. But I NEEEEED!!! them to listen to their fans.
I think people have severely downplayed how big of a loss the lack of any Tortimer Island equivalent is in conversations about New Horizons's shortcomings. This video is the first time I've seen anyone outside of my circle talk about it in more than passing.
Also you should've mentioned that the loading screen for visiting players in New Horizons is *waaay* longer than it was in any previous game. I remember it taking no more than 30 seconds or so in New Leaf.
I still don't get why NH got rid of Tortimer's Island. This would've literally been the perfect game to include it! Since you're already on a different island and all, lol
best animal crossing multiplayer experience is amiibo festival
Back when everyone begged for the roost to be added to new horizons, I'm pretty sure I was the only one who wanted club tortimer the most. I wanted a way to meet new people and play potentially new minigames, not sit and drink coffee :/ which btw, why the heck can't we sit in the chairs in the roost?! We could do that back in new leaf, a game that came out in early 2010.....
that new horizons direct where they showed off kapp’n but no tortimer island was the final nail in the coffin for how i felt about nintendo. Needless to say having a homebrewed switch that has a mode where it can’t send any information to nintendo is more useful than ever right now
And the “free updates” and kinda mid stuff in general too, really hope when the switch 2 comes out Nintendo stops doing that stuff and have more personality again like during the Wii/WiiU/3DS Era
How hard was the homebrew process, or did you buy it post-hombrewing? Nintendo randomly banned me for a year so i cant play any digitally purchased games and making, so homebrewing a switch is very appealing to me rn
@@mixingpaint7724 YT is being very mean to me and deleting my comments every time i try to reply to you. i homebrewed it a few years back and it wasn't too bad! i recommend buying one of those RCM jigs so you don't accidentally damage your switch.
@NickMario1 Ironically enough, the Wii U era is when they started this practice with Mario Maker and Splatoon lol
@@Faniwa828Yeah but the difference is that Mario Maker 1 and Splatoon 1 were already great games without taking the free updates into consideration
The coolest thing about the animal crossing multiplayer is leaving the airport

Nostalgia blind
This has become “doll house simulator” as another creator put it. Tbh, all they need to do is add some minigames - like - tic tac toe or pong for goodness sake. Slap some AC icons on it and boom. But we don’t even get that. Instead for fun we have to create our own tic tac toe boards and drop stones and pearls…. Or figure out - and I mean really do some creative thinking - to do group stuff - like musical chairs with king tut masks on.
… I won’t even get into the furniture and not being able to use 3/4 of it. Looking at you Ferris wheel.
It makes me so happy someone tried to port Mario Party into Animal Crossing at 10:35. That's really creative.
"The People's Animal Crossing" LMAOOOO im calling nl that from now on
The concept of lockdown nostalgia is so funny to me because I had zero money at the time and no Switch or decent PC so I never engaged with anything like ACNH or other popular stuff online. I spent most of my time reading books and crocheting, which was nice, I guess 😂
yep, same. books and crocheting was my way of spending time aswell. day in, day out.
I was much more hurt by the non-implementation of anything that could make the local, switch sharing experience halfway decent.
I couldn’t transfer resident representative status to my sister. We couldn’t share said powers. We couldn’t play split screen spontaneously.
So when I burnt out sooner than she did, the island was left in purgatory. (I hadn’t done the K.K. Slider thing yet)
My favorite tweet during this time was "its only 2020 guys multiplayer gaming is still new"
Someone said that? 😭
I liked the GameCube’s “multiplayer”. You know, when I am going on the train when the second memory card slot is filled with separate Animal Crossing data. It felt obscure and like I was making a small impact, especially with characters like Blanca or letters. It’s just sorta neat and underrated. Dunno what else to say.
Gamecube’s local town thing was a social lubricant, and you had to be together to enjoy it.
Nintendo lucked out with the pandemic when it comes to AC. The game was a massive commercial success. Even to the casuals it remains a great game because they ditched the game after the first month or two. But for old AC fans the eyes were opened after that, when you got the plaza all renovated and launch content slowed down to a crawl, being drip fed trinket updates with little substantial content and most of the NPCs that made Animal Crossing interesting were lost in time. The Happy Home update was honestly the only one that partially redeemed NH, also due to them finally listening to us on some things. But that "this is the last major update" line in the trailer was a middle finger to us especially since people were fine with more DLC. Imagine someone asking something from you and you do it, but then you also say "don't ask me for anything ever again." That was them and not in a tsundere kind of way. Meanwhile there's 1 or 2 new Mario universe games coming out every 6 months. I guess they have 1000 developers on that and 10 on every other franchise they make. I'm pretty much done with Nintendo, I'll likely go Xbox for my next console.
Xbox is dying, switch to PC
The fact that they gave you the power to literally reshape the very structure of your island but only let you own a single one and not have friends help you build it is a crime. It's such a no brainer but they really couldn't be bothered. (also I want my bridges over valleys already)
I have no idea how people get so many friends to play Animal Crossing, I can't even get online friends doing that much less irl ones 😭
Literally, the only people who I was able to find to play with me were two of my cousins or people from AC Discord servers..
My boyfriend and I are in an LDR and ACNH multiplayer is still important for us, but every time we played it, we would be complaining about how much stuff we couldn’t do.
What is a LDR
@@comradecaspy Long distance relationship I'd guess.
New Leaf, my beloved 🧎🏻♀️
I miss the island challenges so much. They were so fun lol
The 2016 new leaf update was more exciting and addicting than NH's 2.0
If we’re paying for online, would it kill Nintendo to let us play unrestricted simultaneously via server-side hosting of the islands. Instead we’re paying paying for the same old, restricted, reload when someone joins, peer-to-peer connection
I firmly believe that lockdown was a double-edged sword for ACNH in particular. Sure, everybody had all the time in the world to pick up this game with digital codes, play online almost 24/7, and show each other our progress in social media posts or on streams. But the downside to this was all we HAD was time. What I mean is, the beauty of Animal Crossing is to live your day to day life. It’s suppose to be one of those games you pick up maybe once/twice a day, when you have a free minute between other commitments (school/university hours and commutes, breaks between chores or jobs, sick days, weekends, etc.). It’s suppose to be one of those games you can play in short spurts, do some tasks, and then call it a day once you can’t realistic complete anymore in-game tasks, before having to prepare for tomorrow irl. But lockdown was no-holds-barred, and the complete upheaval of a day-to-day life with most of those commitments. You had people reaching their 5-Star islands in like 2 weeks to a month, something that should’ve taken most of us WAY longer if it were any other time before lockdown. It was the perfect recipe for monotony and burnout within the game’s first few years…because we really did it ALL in that year of lockdown.
This isn’t to say these issues didn’t already exist with New Horizons. I think it’s mostly agreed that NH has the most nothing dialogue of an Animal Crossing entry with most of the villagers. They aren’t combative and don’t try to play games with you unless you’re offering they come to/stay on your island, or around the holiday events. These issues always existed with New Horizons; all lockdown did was expedite when those cracks would begin showing.
Multiplayer has always basically just glorified trading with extra steps and Making your own fun.
I was dang "popular" on a discord since I was one of the small handful of people who was a South Hemisphere and was willing to multiplay so early on, Mostly because my island was in the first month of fall so I had fish, items and DIY recipes half a year away. I was making Bank really fast simply because I had Dorados on my island and I find fishing and bait digging weirdly zen, My trees got shaken within an inch of their lives for pinecones and acorns and when I got red leaves I made maple bags and all the other fall DIYs, I also got a lot of table DIY's so I became the table lady, bring me wood or a Bell Tip and I'd make them tables.
but as time wore on, what I had to trade dropped in value, I spent two weeks making essentially making a raffle game (mostly cus I had to hoard wrapping paper of specific colours to match the Colorful wheel's item customization) and Nobody frickin' showed up for it, I made sure do even host it on a Sunday almost at the crack of dawn for me due to timezones
the raffle game basically sat on my island for a month collecting dust Mostly cus I didn't have the space to store it away until a newish player needed fruit and crops.
I had them growing in abundance because I like making farms and they had asked to explore after taking one of everything and stumbled upon the raffle game and had asked what it was.
they had a little fun time playing the game and grabbing the prizes and found the dummy prize of 99 sticks, 99 weeds and 100 bells fucking hilarious, I basically let them clear out the game table so I could get the excess prizes out of my house, I gathered enough prizes that at the very least 7 players could leave with 5 prizes each, it got to the point that I didn't even remember what most of the prizes were so it was fun watching a new player enjoy the thing I'd made and even had to make a trip back to drop off what they won.
I mean, minus the fact multiplayer was slow into announcing incoming new players visiting your island, then waiting for players to arrive on the island, in my opinion, the real elephant in the room is Nintendo still using the outdated friend code feature. I mean, I understand if it’s Gameboy or back in the old days where multiplayer was new, but c’mon, it’s already modern era of gaming where inviting/drawing in players is the simplest of multiplayer functionality. If Nintendo wants to take notes of “player safety”, then they should take notes from Dead Rising 2 - Dead Rising 2 Off The Record. Those two entries have the option to “open the flood gates” to incoming player join-ins in the middle of online mode within single player, and you as the player have the option to accept or decline players’ invitations when they show up in the game’s walkie/bluetooth. Or if you don’t want any random players showing up, you can “close the flood gates”. Anyway, that is ALL Nintendo needs to do. No way I’m gonna go through all the social media hassle and wait for 30 min. to over an hour to find one person to invite me into their island to either collect their exclusive fruits or worst, find better turnip selling prices. 🤦♂️😑 Nintendo really needs to step into the modern era of gaming and stop digging their heads into the ashes of the past.
Don't mean to be pedantic, but my family was using Skype in 2006 to talk to international friends and family. Maybe we were niche, but talking and playing games over Skype was common for lots of Americans back then. In fact id play brawl online and use Skype to talk to my friends. Great video, was just a bit thrown when Skype was mentioned as not existing in 2008 lol
Yeah bizarre to even say that, Skype was literally the first major VOIP program. I first used it in like 2004
I love how everyone forgets about animal crossing wild world ds multiplayer
There was a lot that sucked about old AC titles. Literally all of them had their share of issues. People forget about them because nostalgia. If things like Resetti, non-optional villager trades, WW multiplayer, or City Folk in its entirety were to release now as brand-new concepts, people would be pissed lol
It's almost like Nintendo doesn't actually want their player base to have fun, and I'm not just talking about multiplayer. There are aspects in just the single player experience that seriously could have been made better!
I think it'd go a really long way if they just added a little feature where you bump into the other player if you walk into them. Maybe even when you go to talk to another player, say like its a player in a Dream Town, you get some dialogue options to interact with each other. I could imagine a slew of different things. A rock-paper-scissor thing where you both do an emote at the same time, whispering this way, open a trading menu with both your inventories and swap items that way, like come ON! Honestly, not making a replacement for Kappn's island was such a weird decision. Really hope the next game delivers more
I'm so sorry, no Animal Crossing game will ever come close to New Leaf after they created that Tortimer Island... just... wow...
You realize even more how bad multiplayer is when you compare it to loading times on a game on the Nintendo Switch called Sky Children of the Light and try to join a friend over there with multiple people. It takes like 10 seconds, and it has cross plattform with PC, PS4 and Mobile.
New Horizons didn't innovate or expand on ANY returning features, and only put effort in its new features like crafting and terraforming (which I don't like anyways). I really wish we'd get an Animal Crossing game that goes all out on the social/community game the original was meant to be.
Assuming the next AC game uses the same engine, I could easily see the team carrying over all the DIY stuff and then re-investing in the actual AC stuff - minigames, villager interactions, more Stuff to Do in mutliplayer, et al

I still come back to City Folk because its one of the most consistent games in the series and there’s a lot of fun in coming up with unique activities that aren’t just given out to you via the island.
Not to mention, even 15 years later, City Folk trumps New Horizons ten fold, actual voice chat, free online, more items, and most importantly, more fun.

Peak animal crossing multiplayer would be the ability to co-run/live in a town that you can both visit and do the same stuff in
Imagine sharing a town with your friends that you both live in and can both log on whenever you want
Okay I will say that the multiplayer in Let's Go to the City while still boring, it was extremely amazing to 9 year old me being able to connect with my cousin from the opposite end of the country, talking through the Wii microphone

Animal crossing doesn’t have haters. The fans make up for that absence, lol. Jk good video & editing

I would like a few activities! Some of the games players made up themselves are great ideas, but I'd also like to see working restaurants. Maybe there are about 4-5 unique ones that cycle like native fruit. I'd also like to see little interactions like hugs be a thing.
Animal crossing has always been a game where you made your own objectives, its the same thing with the online. Multiplayer made sense back then because it was a way to keep in touch when we didnt have the ways of comunication we have nowadays with smartphones and pcs and all that.
I think I dont need minigames because I like the things people make on their own, but I want to be able to have the same experience in singleplayer as in multiplayer, decorating and all that

no... no... no NO ONE has nostalgic thoughts over that fecked up time.
it’s funny because you’re wrong
The reason Tortimer Island didn't come back was cuz randos you'd bring there would gate keep letting yall leave without payment so you'd have to either give into their demands or hard cut the game whereas everyone would lose all items they gathered after their last save. But NH could've brought it back with a work around this issue
I've never played animal crossing, I don't know why I clicked on this. Amazing video, very entertaining

i was screaming about this. new leaf was incredible. i LOOOOOOOOOOOVED the online features and i hate that they just took it away as well. nintendo tends to take L's with old games.

Multiplayer is literally the worst. See: the spinoffs of Club Penguin.
huh?
The only spin-off Club Penguin had were 2 single player DS games and a Wii party game.
What are you talking about.
New Horizons tried too much at the same time while ignoring most of the past features the prior games introduced.
I mostly just did roleplays with my online friends during ANCL playthroughs XD
Animal Crossing's online was all about socialization. It was only fun because I liked to hang with my online buds.
im ngl i think the most fun i had in ACNL was playing with my online friend. but while we did do minigames together and they were fun, in the end the most fun we had was just using it like discord lmao. i still remember spending hours just sitting on a bench chatting. anyway, in comparison to new leaf, new horizon's multiplayer is pretty disappointing. i only ever used it for trading or selling turnips.
Forever grateful for multiplayer and all our shenangians
god i didn't even know New Leaf had minigames and now I'm genuinely questioning why they decided not to add all the stuff they didn't add to New Horizons. like no nintendo character amiibo villagers **or** minigames??
animal crossing multiplayer may have been kinda bad looking back in retrospect, but it was MY bad multiplayer
Nintendo caused Co to increase sales of Animal Crossing. We're all thinking it, Voyan was the only one brave enough to say it.

LOL at the screenshot.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
Funny enough I barely got to really enjoy the multiplayer on both NL and NH cuz for some reason it was nearly impossible to join or have someone come over via wifi?? Like I could play fine in college with folks but the moment I wanted to connect with a friend via online it was impossible. Never got to figure out why sadly. As for NH its super finicky since it would take a bunch of tries before it suddenly allowed me or anyone else to connect and there was that chance of there suddenly being a disconnect and just had to start all over. (worse if we had traded shit and the game didnt bother counting it as a save.)
Either way I definitely agree that NL felt much more fun to play with folks while NH well... Never really had anything to do in it other than to just invite my friend over to give her crap I collected for her.
Should've just pulled a Denny's
