Funny how City Folk gets panned for being "too much like Wild World" when Japan literally got three iterations of Animal Forest and nobody ever discusses it. I wonder what the OG Japanese audience would say about it.
This game was also good enough for people who didn't own DS. I liked this game very much and I really can't compare it to Wold World because I have never played it.
True but it was still a very new concept at that point and they got some significant upgrades. The original animal forest was on the N64 and didn't have a whole lot then they ported it to the GameCube with a little bit of an addition than they added even more stuff for the North American release and ported it as eForest Plus with the e-reader expanded functionality. So it was like massive improvements and changes each time whereas wild world to city folk dropped features
@@RabidNemo City Folk also added in features, so it's not particularly that big of a deal. Honestly for me, City Folk has the slight edge since it has *actual* holidays, plus like... WAY better framerate. Also, the DLC items. I definitely appreciated those.
I mean, Japan is known for being less shy with updated versions than the international market. Look at more popular RPGs such as Kingdom Hearts, Persona or Pokemon.(Pokemon in particular is funny because of what happened with the first games, the first batch had two special editions release in japan. They first made the JP-only Red and Green and then the special edition blue, with Blue being then reworked into the western-only Red and Blue. Then when they decided to make a special edition for Red and Blue to cash in on the anime, which they released an earlier no-color version of in japan)

I was perfectly excited to play my favorite game on a big tv with nicer graphics. And the city + bus felt like a big enough addition to me. 10 yr old me had no complaints 😂
Honestly as a child I would've loved to get that game, but the main reason I wouldn't get it is because my TV time after school was pretty limited, and during soccer cups it was nonexistent lol. I'm hoping yo try it out on emulator eventually
Same! The city and the bus were nice enough and I was finally able to play with my friends via internet (my ds couldn’t do it for whatever reason) so it was great!
City Folk was my first AC game. I didn't know to go upstairs and save, so every single time I played I would have to start a new game and do chores. I just thought that was the point of the game. Then when I eventually figured saving out, my sister wiped my town to make her own. :(
As someone who never really played Wild World and was introduced to the franchise by City Folk, it will always, ALWAYS have a very special place in my heart. Even if it doesn’t hold up perfectly today (and evidently largely didn’t for its’ time, either), it got me into this series which I have grown and loved and coped with life with for over a decade, and I am so grateful.
Yes. This game also introduced me to Animal Crossing, and though I like New Horizons more, this game is filled with nostalgia, and I think it deserves more love.
I played City Folk every day for a few hours, for well over a year while I was having a severe depressive episode that lasted an extremely long time. As a result of it being closely tied to that I actually have a very difficult time remembering the experience. In spite of that I think playing it probably saved my life.
Oh man, this is SO true of my experience, too. City Folk came into my life when I was experiencing my first severe depressive episode and was also being bullied terribly, and it gave me clarity and peace in my mind in a way nothing else could at the time.
i think that this game was so good to me simply because most of my family had a profile since as kids we were not so into sharing the DS, so even my dad enjoyed fishing and catching bugs in this version
I’m sorry - city folk will always be my favourite. The soundtrack, the additions to wild world, the graphics, the nostalgia the personality MWAH. I remember it was Christmas last year and everyone in my house was asleep, but i was on a call with my friend and i was just fishing and catching bugs in city folk… good times
I never had a DS growing up so City Folk holds a very special place in my heart ❤️ I was so into it that I cried and made a MEMORIAL for Antonio when he moved out 💀
I was so surprised that City Folk did so bad. It was one of my favorites. Mixing Wild World with a new updated platform, graphics and a new city that was removed from your Village so you could get that small forest village feel with city amenities I loved it.
My mom loves the Animal Crossing series, and so I grew up with the series, playing every game as it came out. To this day however, City Folk is still my favorite Animal Crossing! Whenever I think of Animal Crossing, I think of City Folk, and it's music. The towns are so big, allowing you to get lost in them, or have a favorite spot to hangout in. I still remember there being a ledge near my house, and a small ledge near a waterfall. Those two areas were my favorite spots in the whole town! Although I've played a ton more New Leaf, it just doesn't have that same feeling. Everything is mostly flat, and the towns feel significantly smaller. New Horizons also feels too small, and despite being able to terraform, I just can't get areas to give off the same feeling. I think that if you can get past it essentially being Wild World Wii, you'll find a genuinely enjoyable game. One that you can just relax in while you go fishing in a hidden part of town.
I was already 20 when this game came out. I'd play it after college and work. I had a long distance boyfriend (now my husband) at the time and we didn't have long distance calling, so we used the speaker accessory you could buy for city folk to leave voice notes on his wii. I have nothing but positive memories of the game and you bring up a lot of good points I just never noticed. I still love it to death. Also deteriorating path was a great way to make a natural path for your village. Also if you walk it wouldn't deteriorate. The same is true for new leaf if I remember right
City Folk was my first AC, started playing it late 2009 and still play it today. Now that I think about it, its probably my all time favourite game and definitly the game I sank the most hours in. This is the first and only Animal Crossing game I played until I got New Horizons in Christmas of 2021. I have so much nostalgia for it. I had no idea people were trashing it.
Animal crossing city folk was actually my first title. I had tried it through blockbuster and then eventually got wild world and finally city folk permanently. I never forgot city folk ❤
I never once made the connection between City Folk and Wild World, yet I played both a crazy amount when they came out. Lol I guess it made no difference to me, and the new additions were enough for me to have fun starting a save from scratch on a similar game!
Also, I have sooo many fond memories of playing City Folk online using the WiiSpeak! We had to call each other on the phone to set it up anyway lol, but it was still so amazing to me!
Same! And I loved the city so much. As much as I liked Wild World, there's something about City Folk that just hits me, to the point where I get all choked up just hearing the soundtrack. Especially the rainy city songs...
FYI about the Japanese title of City Folk: While it can be translated as "Let's Go to Town", the word and kanji used in the title imply a bigger, more urban town/city than the one you live in in game, so the title isn't contradictory.
City folk was my first animal crossing. I remember always renting it out at the library until my mom eventually bought us a copy. It may be terrible compared to other entries, but it’s the game I spent my childhood on.
This was my first game in the series and holds so many memories. Maelle was the first villager I ever talked to because she lived right next to me and I still love her so much that she's my profile picture on multiple social media sites almost 10 years later. Also I don't care that this game had a reused sound track. Fight me. Wild World had the best soundtrack in the game. Why try and improve upon perfection?
I have to admit, I grew up with City Folk and I loved being able to play it on a big TV. There's definitely a ton of issues with the game, personally my favorite Animal Crossing game is New Leaf. Though, I can't lie, I have so much nostalgia for this game that I can't help but love it!
I never played wild world. So i loved city folk. And i still do. There is something about sitting in the cafe and listening to k.k on THE BIG SCREEN :D
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who absolutely ADORES City Folk. But it may be because it was my first introduction to an Animal Crossing game. It's still my favorite
Why was it ignored by so many people? Because it was stuck on a home console. You could argue that the first game was too, but it's different. After the original Animal Crossing, we were given Wild World, a fully portable AC experience for the first time and got a taste of being able to take our towns anywhere with us. Didn't matter if you weren't home, you wouldn't often have to worry about missing important things. By the time City Folk came out, I wasn't home very often anymore. This was the case for many.
why do you only have 40k subs? this is genuinely such a good video. its funny, and you dont just use memes to cover up for not being funny like so many youtubers do. (cause your actually funny) and this is hella well edited.
City Folk reminds me of waking up on a winter morning in 2012... Going to school then coming home to play some. To be honest I never played much, not out of choice. Just couldn't figure the controls out.
I love your videos--your jokes are genuinely funny and your delivery is great. I throw these on sometimes while making long car trips just for the chill vibes
My first one was the gamecube version. I loved the feature with kap-n's island where you plug in the gameboy. Wildworld got me through anxiety and homesickness as a kid. City Folk was just incredible for me. I loved it evenmoreso.
Oh my gosh this game.. This game is filled with so much nostalgia. I literally can’t with how many good memories I have of it. People seem to forget it, but I absolutely LOVE IT.
I'm also one of those rare Wii Speak owners. I never had an issue with it either. I only probably used it with like 10 different people, but I never remember having issues with communicating, although my memory is pretty loose of that specifically
There is an explanation behind the dialogue system. They went with a different methodology between WW and CF. I’m pretty sure they’re still using that system to this day too with some variation of course.
I loved Let's Go to the City so much when I was younger. Our Wii was in the living room so I had to claim control of the telly, and I always reserved a spot on Saturday nights for KK. 🎵 I didn't actually realise at the time that I could connect Wild World to it so I never connected my games, I just played LGttC and loved it just as much as WW ❤
I didn't avoid City Folk! It was my first Animal Crossing game, and my daughter made sure that I knew about it the day it came out (so that's when I bought it). Wonderful game. I played it every single day until New Leaf came out. Loved City Folk.
It's so weird hearing this kind of talk about City Folk. When WW came out, I didn't have a DS yet, so I asked a friend about it, & all he told me is "it's basically just the gamecube crossing but without holidays" so I said ew no thanks, City Folk is where my love was, though. I was so intensely excited for a Wii AC and I wasnt disappointed -- though had a hard time finding people to play with. I had no idea it sold so badly and that WW sold so well, though. Seeing that was a complete shock to me. I also didn't know but one person with wii speak & I don't even think he used it when he played online with me. But I used the HELL out of the USB keyboard feature. I'd plug in & write a bunch of letters to my animals all in one go. Still have my town data even if I haven't played in years.
Wild World was my first animal crossing game, but City Folk is what turned me into a superfan of the series. I remember spending a New Years countdown on there with some friends online and it is still one of my fondest memories
Animal crossing city folk was my first ever animal crossing game and I remember being so ecstatic. Everyday when I'd come home from school I would always be excited to turn on my Wii and play some animal crossing while my sisters commentated on the game play. I have really fond memories with this game and even though it has its flaws, it persuaded me and my sisters to become avid animal crossing fans.
I was 7 when this game came out and I absolutely loved it… I was literally sitting on the floor at GameStop to read the little flyer inside the game case 😭
As a kid I became obsessed with a Nintendo magazine that was a special issue all about City Folk. I read the magazine a million times and dreamed of having the game. That Christmas I got the game and I loved it. I never knew about AC before, and I thought it was an underground game or something until pocket camp came out.
I grew up with the OG animal crossing (i played it waay after it came out) but i remember city folk being the first game that was like my own, the wild world game was my brothers but I had a character on their town, but city folk was my first town and I gotta say I loved this game and it still holds a warm spot in my heart
Let's Go to the City was the first Animal Crossing game I ever owned so I like it a lot, except for when I forgot to play for a while and every villager was really really angry at me.
This was my main game for too many years. I was active in xchat groups and played with hundreds of players over the years. Most people got over the game and stopped coming online after awhile, I just started a new character and kept adding new people. It was fantastic. After a few years I modded my Wii which added extreme customazation abilities which added thousands of more hours of fun. I was playing actively up up until the final day of wifi.
As someone who just got into animal crosssing a few years ago, I always wondered why I'd never heard anything about the city folk lol. The retrospective is great !!!!! and the video too !!!!!!!! sending love
City Folk was my first Animal Crossing game, and I didn't even learn about the previous games for several years. It may not have had much new stuff to offer over the Gamecube/N64DD version, but it's still a very fun little game in its own right, and the online multiplayer was a *very* welcome addition. I only ever knew like two other people who played it, both of them family members with busy lives. So every time I got to play online with someone felt like a special occasion. Almost magical in a way.
As someone who missed Wild World, this game is a whole new experience for me, im so excited to see the city also! I got lucky with cat villagers! I have Merry, Bob, and Lolly!
I didn't ignore it. It's my most played Animal Crossing, I loved that game and its still one of my favorite Animal Crossings. If City Folk had the features of New Horizons that let you put furniture outdoors, neighbors didn't change their interiors or move away if you didn't want them too, and they had expanded the city to include even more parts to it with rotating inventory for all the stores, and didn't have the auction house. And it had the events from the first one, It would be the perfect Animal Crossing.
I'm with the gang that didn't play Wild World before City Folk, so I didn't realize it was way too similar when I played it and had a good time with it. But I don't have as many memories with it as I have with the GameCube one, I remember that one much more fondly than City Folk.
Playing city folk right now and looked up videos to watch in the background… I’ve played every animal crossing game and come back to all of them this year and I’m actually having a blast with city folk right now 😭 I didn’t remember how much drama characters had with each other, if they have beef everyone talks about it! The cafe is right there, you don’t have to unlock it, and the city wasn’t in wild world.. I mean, HONESTLY it’s not much more than wild world, but it is very nostalgic and makes me think about the times I fought with my brother over when it’s my turn to play LOL. I think my favorite animal crossing game is the game cube one because it’s just so simple and mindless and you can just run around and get more things, and the gba island is a nice touch. But city folk is like. Simple like the GameCube, but with more believable relationships between the characters, city, and more accessorizing … Yeah I guess it’s like wild world on a TV, but the CITY!!! What does suck though is how many furniture items were lost without online lol I do love new leaf, and new horizons is good but overwhelming for me now because idk when I’ll have as much free time as I did in 2020 to sit down and construct a cool island… Idk. When not on my 3ds, city folk is a nice one to play on my tv. The controls are annoying though, my monitor is close to my bed where I lay down so I have to sit weird to be able to do some things lol. I don’t think city folk is the best but it is more fun than I remembered. I know there’s more to do in new leaf and new horizons, but that’s why I like it I think- depending on my mood, I prefer the simplicity of it. Or…. Maybe im wrong and just full of nostalgia right now, LOL. great video though!!
Your videos are amazing! I've been binge watching and found them extremely fun. You are fresh air in the middle of the craziness TH-cam has become. Keep up the good work!!
I absolutely love your animal crossing retrospective videos! Id love to see you to a complete deep dive into new leaf, I would happily watch it even if it was super long. The way you talk and word things is really lovely and very fair when it comes to critique and the passion you have for the games really comes out in your videos, even down to the amount of effort you clearly put into your videos! New leaf is my favourite so it's really nice to see someone as passionate about it as I feel 💖
I played city folk for like 8 years and then my older sister randomly gave me wild world. Legitimitely thought they were the same game but dumbed down on the DS.
Weirdly enough, city folk retroactively became a great game to play emulated on pc. WASD for movement, whatever interaction controls you prefer and being able to point and click with the mouse is great
It’s definitely because I grew up with city folk as my only animal crossing game but I’ve recently been replaying and I love it so much it’s so fun and gets too much hate it just has such a charm and simplicity to it
I got the game in January and I love it. I think it has the best soundtrack of all the AC games for starters. The Wii controls were a bit difficult at first, but the game runs well once you get a hold of them. As of now, it is my comfort game. I love how the villagers are so interactive with you and each other.
I remember when I had city folk and would literally dream of getting fang on my island and would pray he would move to my island. I’m so happy I was able to get him on my island in new horizons lol
You hit the nail on the head when you described CF as combining some of the best elements of Gamecube and Wild World! Always said that CF was the least favorite release amongst our family of AC fans, but just started a new town last night and the nostalgia was stronger than expected.

Okay I'll fight you. Population Growing had the best soundtrack, not WW.
Wild world is my favorite animal crossing game, so city folk being wild world with extra features means it’s perfect to me lol
Both Wild World and City Folk are the best in the series imo.
My algorithm has been blessing my feed with criminally underrated TH-cam channels and I love it. Keep up the great content :)
I have to admit, I grew up with City Folk and I loved being able to play it on a big TV. There's definitely a ton of issues with the game, personally my favorite Animal Crossing game is New Leaf. Though, I can't lie, I have so much nostalgia for this game that I can't help but love it!
City folk was my first AC game, and even though it literally is just Wild World it has a special place in my heart.
Can't deny, my pet turtle likes City Folk way more than New Horizons. This is an invaluable review in favor of City Folk.
As someone who played the original and never knew wild world existed, I loved city folk
City Folk was my first animal crossing so while I can acknowledge it being not the best it will always hold a special place in my heart!
This was actually my first Animal Crossing game, so this is gonna keep a special place in my heart
I didn't actually realise at the time that I could connect Wild World to it so I never connected my games, I just played LGttC and loved it just as much as WW ❤
FINALLY some city folk love. It was the first animal crossing game I’ve ever played so I loved it and never saw that many problems with it.
Wild World was my first animal crossing game, but City Folk is what turned me into a superfan of the series. I remember spending a New Years countdown on there with some friends online and it is still one of my fondest memories
Loved the edit you did with the main theme song xD
City folk was my favorite and first animal crossing I ever played. I still occasionally go back to play it.
Animal crossing city folk was my first ever animal crossing game and I remember being so ecstatic. Everyday when I'd come home from school I would always be excited to turn on my Wii and play some animal crossing while my sisters commentated on the game play. I have really fond memories with this game and even though it has its flaws, it persuaded me and my sisters to become avid animal crossing fans.
as someone who didnt play animal crossing on the ds and didnt have a gamecube i really really loved city folk :)
I was 7 when this game came out and I absolutely loved it… I was literally sitting on the floor at GameStop to read the little flyer inside the game case 😭
My mom ended up getting into this game just as much as I did, so it always holds a soft spot for me.
As a kid I became obsessed with a Nintendo magazine that was a special issue all about City Folk. I read the magazine a million times and dreamed of having the game. That Christmas I got the game and I loved it. I never knew about AC before, and I thought it was an underground game or something until pocket camp came out.
Oh and I never knew you could use motion controls for tools...
I still want play city folk to this day
strongly suggested, has the strongest music out of all the other animal crossing games
@@kaydenlikescats cityfolk and New leaf are super close in terms of music to me. Hard to pick which is better!
I like this because it's provocative enough to make me watch but still respectfull enough to not make me sad
As someone who just got into animal crosssing a few years ago, I always wondered why I'd never heard anything about the city folk lol. The retrospective is great !!!!! and the video too !!!!!!!! sending love
Wii Speak was my first online voice chat on console. I also experienced it on the DS with Pokémon. I loved my Wii Speak
City Folk was pretty much my first AC game. I didnt play wild world, so city folk was new to me
I'm with the gang that didn't play Wild World before City Folk, so I didn't realize it was way too similar when I played it and had a good time with it.
Simple like the GameCube, but with more believable relationships between the characters, city, and more accessorizing …
Yeah I guess it’s like wild world on a TV, but the CITY!!!
What does suck though is how many furniture items were lost without online lol
I do love new leaf, and new horizons is good but overwhelming for me now because idk when I’ll have as much free time as I did in 2020 to sit down and construct a cool island…
Idk.
I just got a wii to go through old games I never played, I just started city folk and I love it so far
This is the current AC game I'm playing. Quite empty but still I love the vibes of this cozy game and the dialogues are 👌
I knoww, the cozy vibes of the older Animal Crossing games are chef’s kiss
finally!!! i’ve missed your uploads especially the ac ones 😭 and its even better the city folk retrospective
City Folk is the only Animal Crossing game I have ever played and I love it!
i was so paranoid about grass degradation as a kid that even today i'm afraid of running in new horizons
City folk was my first game of the series, wasn’t aware people didn’t enjoy it that much lol. New Leaf was and still is my favorite
Anybody else remember RedPandaGamer's Animal Crossing: City Folk for a year series?
I played city folk for like 8 years and then my older sister randomly gave me wild world. Legitimitely thought they were the same game but dumbed down on the DS.
Weirdly enough, city folk retroactively became a great game to play emulated on pc. WASD for movement, whatever interaction controls you prefer and being able to point and click with the mouse is great
i loved city folk :((( its still my fave one, i remember the city being sooo excited for me and the graphics were so cute
Let's Go to the City was my first videogame ever, I'll love it forever and ever.
finally some credit to jvgsjeff. The king of commitment and ac video essay b roll footage
This was my first AC game and I have a special place in my heart for it for sure. Thanks for this vid!
i spent a year of real life and gameplay regrowing grass through planting and watering flowers. may have been a tad depressed that year.
The fact that it is Wild World, but with more shit and on a TV is what makes this my favorite Animal Crossing.
I remember when I had city folk and would literally dream of getting fang on my island and would pray he would move to my island. I’m so happy I was able to get him on my island in new horizons lol
Jokes on them because I didn’t realize you could get on the bus and go to the city until I’d been playing the game for a year.
I would argue it’s a better wild world in my opinion. I love this game, it’s my second AC
Really enjoyed this video :). I love how you're funny but the videos are nice and chill as well. Definitely comfort videos if you will
You hit the nail on the head when you described CF as combining some of the best elements of Gamecube and Wild World! Always said that CF was the least favorite release amongst our family of AC fans, but just started a new town last night and the nostalgia was stronger than expected.
