In wudang we call parries "counters" and when I'm training for sparring, I like to drill them 10x to drilling my cuts. The reason for this is that in real swordplay, the only viable strategy over time is to be able to strike cleanly without the possibility of reply, such that making *definitive* counters is the prerequisite to a strike, if one values one's life.
