7 Musical Easter Eggs in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

  • Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is quickly becoming my favorite soundtrack from Zelda for one reason alone: It quotes themes from previous Zelda titles everywhere you turn. There is so much symbolism, nostalgia, and straight up cool throwbacks to moments from other games, I can’t help but be in awe when i come across yet another.
    In this video I explore very briefly 7 references or Easter eggs in the music of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, as well as a bonus.
    This video was voted on by the channel (what a fun giveaway) and MarianoGM99 gave the request, 49% chose this.
    BUT
    Tristan was a close second with 46% Majora’s Mask Music Theory of the Astral Observatory and Milk Bar Themes. So I will definitely add that to my summer “todo” list.
    And lastly, I actually loved the request from Patron Anna, to break down some of Final Fantasy VI. And being a Patron comes with it’s perks… we’ll do that one too 🤣
    I have a new Top Patron Tier now, $10 fan requests. It’s not a 1 to 1, but you’re very likely to get your request done if you stick around for any significant period of time.
    Please Like, Subscribe, Comment, and Share with a friend.

      My favorite was hearing the prologue theme in the regular battle theme, the lore accuracy to the monsters only being hostile due to being enslaved by Ganon is awesome

      A small one I liked was the sound when you use Tulin's power. It's the beginning of the sound of the hawk grass in Twilight Princess. I don't know if that's where it's originally from but I liked the callback.

      I think my favorite musical easter egg is link humming Saria's song once in a while. It's just such a subtle reference, that only people who played the game *excessively* notice.
      Or on that note (pun intended) the fact that everytime you cook link hums the first few notes to various Zelda songs. For example the ballad of the windfish, eponas song, song of storms, Hyrule field theme, breath of the wild theme and much more.
      I could go on with so much more because this game is full of musical easter egss

    Fi's theme was the one I picked up instantly. A testament to how good and emotional the theme is that most of us found Fi infuriating yet listen to the song with a feeling of fond nostalgia.

    I'll never grow tired of hearing Fi's theme whenever the Master Sword is the main focus of a scene (took me so much time to notice it even plays when Link dies in BotW, by the way).

    I love the thematic consistency the Zelda series has maintained over literal decades. This game(and botw) expands that even further with not only self referential moments but they even further develop themes for their setting in this game. Consider the evolution of the dragon roost theme from Wind Waker and all the way until now. So good.

    The only one I caught was the tower launch, I couldn't forget that first visit to the Forsaken Fortress.
    Also, I wanted to mention on the house theme video there's one that wasn't included. It isn't actually in one of Link's homes so I don't know if it counts, but it is on the "home" screen of Hyrule Warriors. The song playing on the title screen is an epic, fanfare version of the same house theme.

I remember feeling cold as a kid listening to snow peak mountain and to this day I get chills listening to it. I don't mean Zelda, or Nintendo, or videogame music. In the early games the Master Sword was just a final item upgrade, the best of the sword line, no different than the biggest bomb bag. But starting in Skyward Sword, the series now has storylines _about_ the Master Sword itself: its creation, its repair.
    Fi's theme gives the Master Sword its own musical identity, and allows it to participate in the musical-motific storytelling on equal footing. It's not just "a Skyward Sword reference", not anymore. It _is_ the Master Sword's theme.

    I think there's another easter egg that can be heard in the battle theme that plays when you encounter an enemy in the Hyrule Castle Chasm, near the end of the game. In the track there's a flute that plays three notes that sound quite similar to the Bunny Link theme from A Link to the Past. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but it could be an interesting find.

    Also about the towers, once you reach the peak you hear 5 notes in quick succession. D6, Bb5, C6, G6, G6. This string of notes is also present in the main theme for BOTW
    Yes I did sit down at my piano to find these notes while writing this comment.

      Hahaha for sure! Definitely a Main Theme BOTW AND TOTK quote. This motif is in both main themes. End of BOTW and beginning of TOTK. Which has some significance to the game’s chronological order. Very cool stuff.

    The house theme in Tarrey Town references multiple building themes, and there's a clear reference to, of all things, Spirit Tracks' Castle Town theme in Lookout Landing's theme. The Lightning Temple also uses the big chords from OOT's spirit temple.

    • @ZeldaMusicTheory
      @ZeldaMusicTheory  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you get time please send me links and times for both! I’ve tried finding the Castle Town theme before and was unsuccessful but you’re the second comment about it. Thanks!

      @@ZeldaMusicTheory th-cam.com/video/mhPrUKGfDgg/w-d-xo.html in the Lightning temple is the start of a recurring musical theme that references the very opening of the Spirit Temple - not the two opening notes, but what immediately follows: th-cam.com/video/YDFVGKfhXyY/w-d-xo.html
      As for lookout landing - the piano here th-cam.com/video/f2W4A_HUXJE/w-d-xo.html is the same tune as the main melody of ST's Hyrule castle, best heard here: th-cam.com/video/y_NCsqpNp1w/w-d-xo.html Castle Town and Hyrule Castle have the same theme but the comparison is more obvious with Hyrule Castle because it and Lookout Landing are both in 4/4 where Castle Town is in 3.

    • @ZeldaMusicTheory
      @ZeldaMusicTheory  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@flop47 thank you for sending these. So I actually am not sure either one is intentional. The Hyrule castle one sounds similar but it’s not the same notes (or shape, like whole and half steps in the scale). But kinda similar.
      The Spirit Temple one after the first two notes why immediately follows is parallel fourths descending in Phrygian mode. But I’m the Lightning Temple that’s not yore what plays. I’m trying really hard to make it fit but I don’t quite hear it. The only overlap I hear is the first two notes are a whole step moving down, then everything else is different. And they are in different keys.
      But let me know if I missed something.
      Also also send these. I’m happy to vet 3-4 ones that end up not being intentional references for the sake of finding a really cool one I didn’t hear on my own 👍🏼
