Just watched the movie. Saw this comment. I also lost my brother 7 years ago in just a few weeks from now. Just seeing him cry watching his sons I felt like I knew what he was gonna say before he even said it. My condolences to you man.
Also wanted to say that I am glad we have studios like A24 to distribute these truly hard hitting & gritty films that most studios seem to be dropping as direct to streaming. This was my favorite film I was able to catch at the cinema alongside GOTG 3, Oppenheimer, and the 4K Remasters of Titanic/The Abyss in April/December respectively.
Too redundant, since 2 of the other brothers unalived themselves as well. Plus Kerry and Chris' death were similar. Remember: it's a movie not a documentary
As a Texan who is from Dallas/ Fort Worth watching this allowed me to look back at my childhood. If you grew up in the 80s you saw these tragedies play out in real time. Even though these actors do not resemble the people they are playing physically they do capture that place and time.
What do you mean they don’t resemble them physically? Like do you think height / weight is off… ? Or that you think they should have cast people who looked more alike … even if they weren’t as physically gifted?
@@iamskippy Not in height or weight . The actor who portrayed Kerry Von Erich was the least like his muse. Kerry was 6’3 or 6’4 at least 250lbs. Kerry Von Erich is in the prison scene of the movie Problem Child. (Which was filmed in Dallas). Look at him standing next to Michael Richards in the movie.
Mor important in the scene with Kevin's sons is you see the breaking of the curse. He says they shouldn't see him cry but his sons admonish him and say it's OK to cry that everyone does and they do all the time. this is in direct contrast with the way his father would have handled the situation. Then they tell him they will be his brothers so h edoesn't have to feel sad anymore in only the way a child can with pure innocence and love. He then gets up and plays football with his boys. Another thin you don't see Fritz do. He doesn't play with the boys he just trains them. Kevin ends the movie surrounded by love and family. In contrast Fritz and his wife are alone together in their house. living amongst ghosts and shadows.
If you're a fan of wrestling, toxic masculinity is a huge part of the entire industry. The Von Erich story is such a sad one. All of the brothers worked so hard and the Iron Claw was absolutely heart wrenching. It's just so sad, and im amazed that you actually covered this. Thanks, Definition.
I always felt that this story deserved a film but godamn it,the director out-did himself that ending literally had me bawling like a baby, this film deserves much much more recognition & Zac deserves so much more respect for his acting skills
I agree the ending is so well done very beautiful and sad and it's rare to see your father cry in his case he's recalling playing football with his brothers while looking at his two boys😢
This was an amazing film that was overlooked for major awards for no good reasons. It's easily one of the 3 best films of the year. I've seen the movie 3x first with my brother and his wife, then with my dad and lastly with my wife. The swell of emotions leading to the end scene with his kids left ever person I saw the film with tears rolling down their cheeks. A24 has become a true power house in amazing cinema with some of the freshest ideas for movies coming from them.
Funny you dropped this watched this over the weekend early in the morning nice and quiet. A real breath of fresh air compared to today's movies definitely in my top 50
I haven't seen this movie but I lost both of my parents in the last 6 months so this review had me sobbing. My mom died 6 months ago, my mother in law (who I was very very close to) died in November and my dad just died 3 weeks ago. I'm only In my early 30s . It's been so hard. Even as I type this my eyes are tearing up and I have a giant lump in my throat. I keep telling myself I will see them again one day and I genuinely believe that's true. Seeing the clip of the brother crossing the river and hugging his family is exactly how I hope it will be.
I'm very sorry for your losses. My dad died unexpectedly in September and I'm only 28, so I know what you mean when you say it's been so hard. I hope you'll be alright, sending healing thoughts your way.
I couldn’t stop crying after the movie. I invited my mom since she loves movies that make her cry, and all I could think of were my brothers. They’re both alive but they’re my best friends
It's funny how different people experience moments in cinema. I loved the film. The afterlife scene did not work for me at all, took me out of the film. However the following scene when Zac was crying and said it was because he used to be a brother had me weeping uncontrollably.
@heavyspoilers I really wish they would have added him to the movie. In life, he erased himself because he didn't live up to the Von Erich name, and in death, he was erased from the most powerful feature of his family. It adds even more to the tragedy of his passing.
Damn, chris felt left out from the rest of the family and then a movie gets made about the family and they deliberately leave him out, that is just sad.
I couldn't stop crying at the end of this movie. I haven't seen a movie that more closely resembled my life growing up with my 3 brothers than this one. We were a family of 4 boys. Almost 5 boys but he died at birth. We were very close in age and did absolutely everything together. But I did something that started a negative chain reaction to the rest of my family. I moved to another country. After that my parents got divorced, then later my brothers all moved to different states. My oldest brother's wife took the kids and left. That was too much for him. he became a nomad and roams the countryside. It's nearly impossible to contact him. My younger brother found out his wife was cheating on him and everyday when he came home from work always found his kids hungry and completely neglected. It went on like that for years. He ended up doing something to her that, let's just say the cops still him haven't found him to this day. I have no idea if he's dead or alve or if I'll ever see him again. I only have one brother left that I can still talk to. I truly and honestly i believe that I started this whole mess. Like i cursed my family
Saying this movie was good just doesn’t feel like enough. I really thought I could handle watching it as someone who was born and raised in Texas, I grew up knowing all of this but halfway into this movie it felt like being strapped into a vehicle being driven off a cliff. At one point in the theater you could hear people gasping and crying because it felt relentlessly. The thing I was so impressed with was how perfectly the movie captured Emotional Parentification. Showing how the parents never emotional supported their children, so the children learned to emotionally supported each other and how Kevin took on carrying the emotional weight of being the parent. Framing the story through that lens was really such pure and honest storytelling, making it so relatable and everything that much more devastating. I honestly can say I recommend the movie but I can say I can’t remember the last time a movie made me cry until I thought I was gonna puke.
The end of this film was an amazing representation of how masculinity isn't necessarily toxic, but more how toxic masculinity can be changed into healthy masculinity. "I'm sorry boys, you shouldn't see me like this" to "Its ok Dad, we can be your brothers" is utterly heartbreaking
I like to think that the curse was actually Fritz ingraining into his sons' minds that crying or showing emotions is a sign of weakness. This caused the brothers other than Kevin to become closed off and detached themselves from the world. When Kevin's sons told him that it's okay to cry and show emotions, he realized that in order to be a better father to his children, he has to be better than his own father, Fritz. He allows himself to be emotional and opened up to his kids, which is the complete opposite of how the Von Erich family kept each other at arm's reach in times of need.
What if Chris had a dream about the future and he dreamt that a movie was made about his family and he was left out of it and that was final straw for him to commit suicide. I personally found it very distasteful to leave him out of the movie as if he never even existed.
Well forcing your dream on to your children is in a way not caring about them if you really think about it.... The only person he cared about was himself at the end of the day....
I grew up in the Attitude Era and have never heard of the Von Erich. Went into this movie blind and was easily one of the most "heavy" movie ive ever seen. How much can one family go thru?
even if you lose the people you love, they will always be your family. him saying he is no longer a brother is wrong cause even if his brothers were all gone. you will always be their brother. it's a tragic story of the real family. but, it's also why people shouldn't push their kids to do this and that just because you didn't get to. but, every family is different on how they do things.
I'm glad that Kevin didn't entirely leave wrestling as you would think that his whole life experience might have embittered him to wrestling but his sons are in it now.
So glad that I've chosen this movie to watch tonight instead of going out, I feel that it gave and released so much emotion to me. Not gonna lie I shed some tears, but I was happy for the ending.
The dad definitely wasn’t the “bad guy”. All good parents want more for their kids than they had. He just pushed them in way he thought was helping them and was really hurting in the end.
The fact that all except 1 died in weird and/or tragic ways is scary. Putting in Chris would have been devastating to viewers. As a life-long wrestling fan this story is well known and a tragic cautionary tail. Fritz was like Lavar Ball times 10 without a heart.
1:28 "aaaa yaa ahh yes he was controlling and and and he he heee motivated his his is his his sons you know you know to try you know you know to become to become to become champions, and maybe he did push to hard sometimes" HOLY SHIT MAN, when actors dont have anything to read....its tough.
Well it was a question he didn't expect. And he's talking about a real life person and there's the family that knew him personally that are still living. So he's gotta be careful about his words.
Jim Cornette (a wrestling promoter from the same era) described Chris's situation like an even rougher version of Mike's, being smaller, less athletic and very injury prone.
The ending is easily my absolute favorite of the year. It does suck it got so overlooked but I can sort of understand that A24 spent allot of FYC budget on Past Lives.
Personally, I took Kerry joining his brothers was Kevin imagining the afterlife as a way to deal with the loss and getting to peace with it. I didn't know the directors vision yet while watching it. Just wanna say I love you're doing more "regular" movies lately (like the classic breakdowns too). It's a nice change from the superhero stuff.
1:17 the subtitles say “after missing out on what he believed he was Jew” and I was like wow Paul that’s a little on the nose. He definitely said due but TH-cam is trying to cancel him.
I feel like the merry afterlife scene is is what David visualized where he went when he put his body on the table. I amazing move great review as always.
See someone doesn't necessarily need to be physically abusive... in the von erichs case the dad was emotionally abusive and apparently narcissistic those two can sometimes be enough 😢
I just saw this movie and I must say it was very hard to watch. I think the family had to go through a great deal of tragedy, I don’t know If there was actually a curse, but I think the father made a huge impact in his son’s lives and not always in a good way. He pushed them all too hard to achieve success and his kids by trying to live up to his father’s dreams got lost in the way. There was a scene in which Eric (Zac Efron) tried talking to the mom and told her to try taking to the dad because he was too hard on one of his brothers, but she didn’t do anything. I think both the parents could have been more open to communication and understanding towards their kids and I am sure all of this tragedy would have not happen. But that’s just my opinion. Going back to the movie I think it was a very good movie, with very good performances, Zac Efron really shined in this one, and I must say the ending was heartbreaking but it was really worth the watch.
To be honest, I believe the reason why it hasn’t been nominated or talked about for nominations is because somebody filed some work late for it to meet the deadlines to be in the Oscar run. Otherwise, Zac Efron would have definitely been nominated for best actor and probably would have one.
Am I the only one who thought the father is an absolute ab8usive monster?? I understand why the director labeled this as “toxic masculinity” but that almost feels like a very mild description of the father.. when in reality I feel like the father is way worse than that, it’s just full on ab*se
While I loved this film, I was very familiar with the tragic story of the Von Erichs. Thusly, I felt the film took very little chances and kind of wished a little humor was mixed with the joy in the afterlife scene. Kerry is LITERALLY holding his oldest brother in his arms. Would to have loved just a moment where he takes it all in: "this is a trip" or something similar being said. Just to break the seriousness to the audience a bit and let everyone enjoy the positive outlook
The wrestling business truly is tragic. Word has it that they are working on a film about the Guerreros. Chavo did a lot of the ring work for this movie and he’s been tapped for the Guerrero film
Wow I almost casually watched this the other day. I’m kinda glad I did. I almost cried during this breakdown. I would’ve been a wreck all weekend. Now I can put my emotional guard on before I watch.
Why do we call pushing your children to be better for selfish reasons, parenting? These type of parents may get a successful career for their children. But most have toxic self worth and or toxic relationships with other people…It’s one thing for a parent to support and guide a child with their passions. It’s another thing for a parent that pushes their desires onto their children..
I must have zoned out but i don't remember when the youngest brother died .. that scene when Jeremy went into the afterlife and met up with his brothers was great moment. But yes i just remember the youngest was kinda vegetable and he was trying to play guitar again but couldn't thats all i remember seeing him last in the flim until the afterlife scene

This was such a good movie. Thank you for this video
1:17 the subtitles say “after missing out on what he believed he was Jew” and I was like wow Paul that’s a little on the nose. He definitely said due but TH-cam is trying to cancel him.
This was my favorite movie from last year. I wish they would have released it earlier in the year so it could have gotten some more awards attention.
i fukn cried a lil at the end when he met up with his brothers, havent done that since the lion king
This has easily become one of my all time favorites
Thanks for this, Paul. Fantastic breakdown and a terrific film. Keep up the excellent work.
This movie was hands down best picture of 2023. It’s an absolute atrocity that it wasn’t nominated for anything anywhere.
I feel like the merry afterlife scene is is what David visualized where he went when he put his body on the table. I amazing move great review as always.
It’s no Mid Damn Web but it’s still a good movie
See someone doesn't necessarily need to be physically abusive... in the von erichs case the dad was emotionally abusive and apparently narcissistic those two can sometimes be enough 😢
Even if you're not a wrestling fan, AMAZING MOVIE!❤
My mother’s mother had five children, and my mother is the only one left. I certainly understand what the story is about.
I’d love to ask Zac how he balanced acting against dealing with the irony of playing a character killing himself for entertainment.
I get this is a wrestling movie, but anyone who has siblings can relate to how horrible it would be to lose them
A24 is such a cool studio, and this is another winning entry.
The movie was amazing its a shame it received 0 oscar nominations
The wrestling business truly is tragic. Word has it that they are working on a film about the Guerreros. Chavo did a lot of the ring work for this movie and he’s been tapped for the Guerrero film
I just watched this movie. Definitely a fave from last year
Wow I almost casually watched this the other day. I’m kinda glad I did. I almost cried during this breakdown. I would’ve been a wreck all weekend. Now I can put my emotional guard on before I watch.
Also in that final picture….he fucking launches that kid
This movie doesn't hit as hard as " The Wrestler" but still it had a very deep message, never live your life to achieve someone else's dreams
1:28
This guy reminds me Jimmy Two times,im gonna go get the paper's, get the paoers😂😂
Wow Amazing ending, thanks for the video.
- - I saw them ALL wrestle in CC Texas, when I was a kid!!!
I was not expecting to cry thru half of this movie 😢
That scene was so perfect.
As someone who's empathetic I'd lose it totally watching this movie I mean just watching brief clips is rough as is 😢
Great movie, but that ending really got my *EYEBALLS SWEATING HEAVILY* 🥹
That was also the first time we saw *KEVIN’s eyeballs sweating* in the Texas summer heat!!
Not sure if you did it already I’m subbed just having hard time remembering if you did a breakdown of the movie I liked this
Can’t believe it didn’t get any nominations
I must have zoned out but i don't remember when the youngest brother died .. that scene when Jeremy went into the afterlife and met up with his brothers was great moment. But yes i just remember the youngest was kinda vegetable and he was trying to play guitar again but couldn't thats all i remember seeing him last in the flim until the afterlife scene
I think it’s only
Getting overlooked because it’s considered a 2024 movie maybe ? It’s only out here in Ireland last week
Fantastic ending
Great but sad movie brought me to tears
That poor family man....
Na the ending broke me down when Zachs talking to his kids about not being a brother anymore made me break
I live not far from where the Von Erichs grew up. Everyone around knows their story. Tragic.
Great movie, but why no Chris von erich???
This whole movie is PERFECT!!! 🫡🤙🏾💜
