Piccolo being able to pronounce the Makankosappo is a very clever way to tell the viewer, that this isn't actually Piccolo speaking.

What's weird is how Gohan even knows the name of that move.
Trunk's back story is why he is no nonsense in fights. While everyone kept letting freeza transform and live he just took care of business fast. He didn't grow up on a world with Dragon balls and so danger and death are permanent to him so threats are to be taken care of.

One of my favorite episodes, of all anime ever, is when trunks goes back to his time and just fucking wrecks everyone. Very satisfying to watch him finally set his world right.

Future Bulma is a great character in her own right and the additional story beat that Team Four Star added of her shooting her shot for Future Gohan is hilarious.
Man, the Gohan death scene was easily the most impactful part in this entire viewing. Such a shame to have it cut. :(

Trunk's transformation into an SS is one of the most sad, poetic, and badass moments. This movie is I think the only one that is in fact canon.

In the manga trunks was already a super saiyan from the start, which makes more sense but dramatically the anime did it better.
I remember back when YT let users submit subtitles, I actually helped out with the beginning. So this one holds a bit of a special place in my heart.

Vegeta screaming in the background while Trunks was talking with his mom about the time machine being almost done.
This is a throwback to season 2 where Gohan stole one of Vegeta's dragonballs, which sent him into a uncontrollable rage.
Somehow that scream was able to travel through space from Namek to Earth. Vegeta being so pissed off he was able to scream so loud that his voice was perfectly audible even after... what... 18 years? through the vacume of space which physically should not be possible
There are so many things here that I would want to touch on, but we get there when we get there.
I will say that we are one step closer to Krillin's one big win.
Y'know saying Krillin gets one big win at all (while vague) is a big spoiler all on it's own right?

@@qtippz no, the divergence from this timeline and the canon one is after the Freeza saga, and Vegeta did that scream while still on Namek.
@@portalworld9880 But THIS future Trunks is from a different timeline that came to the main timeline. The canon/main timeline will always play like how WE watch(ed) it.
Bulma had most of her character development in the original Dragon Ball series, before Z. She was the first character to meet Goku when he was a kid, and she’s the reason he went on an adventure in the first place. She’s one of the most important characters in the Dragon Ball universe, but she became a side character when the show started focusing on high action fight scenes.

Monty Oum was originally planned to be Gohan in this movie, but he sadly passed away before they could record with him.
Also, the screaming in the background at 17:16 was Vegeta’s back on Namek that everyone could hear across reality
What I've noticed is that Ken is more reactive to funny things with a chuckle, and Bethany is more reactivate to anything dark, morbid or risqué with a 😲 face.

I mean it’s fine. It’s not like they going to even know much about the red ribbon army to even have much connection to them. Plus I’m pretty sure the abridged version just goes fast and they’ll be fighting cell in next 10 episodes.
it's okay, they aren't the big bad of this saga anyways.
It’ll just make the appearance of Androids 19 and 20 more mysterious, which is fun in its own way.

A bit early for this, but it's not too big a deal. I always find it wild how light hearted Dragon Ball is. Occasionally there are some serious moments. Mostly from Z onwards. Yet you go to Trunk's timeline and everything is so bleak. Goku gives his enemies second chances or time to power up. But Trunks knows how bad things can get. So he doesn't waste time and he goes straight for the mission
That's the thing I like about DBZ; it consistently shows how badly the Blood Knight character archetype can shoot themselves in the foot, unlike something like Bleach where Kenpachi is just soloing everything else and one shotting people he comes across.
Android 17 actually becomes a park ranger in Dragon Ball Super
And TFS didn't predict it or anything, I think they said they got the idea from a Toriyama interview.

Makes sense though tbh both time travellers with dark heartbreaking pasts what with...
Trunks: baisically never got to know any of his extended family in the z fighters and only father/mentor figure murdered as well as his world baisically having ended
The doctor: the fucking time war and just the sheer amount of things he had to go through, losing his companions continuously to either them leaving or dying (katarina, Adric, peri, donna technically, the ponds, Clara, bill and nardol) like christ its heartbreaking, only women he ever ends up loving end up leaving (rose trapped in Pete's world with the meta crisis doctor) or even the fact of his literal wife cause of thier own timestremas being in opposite directions knowing how she dies cause he witnessed it as thier first encounter while for her it was their last and that's just the surface level stuff
The Roller Coaster guy honestly did not deserve that. That had the be one of the most polite workers I've ever seen. He even offered them fast pass options instead of calling security.
It's funny that they're laughing at 17's dream goal but wait until they see that he's actually a park ranger lol
Also the androids and trunks are both based on terminator and back to the future
I hadn't realized that this was done about the time of Monty Oum's death, or that they even knew him. At 22:47 they showed "In memory of Monyreak 'Monty' Oum" in the credits. That gives me a new appreciation for the creators of this abridged series.
For those who don't know, Monty Oum was the creator and lead animator of the Rooster Teeth web anime series RWBY, until his death in 2015. He was a genius at fight choreography. RIP Monty.
They had met Monty. They looked up to him as a legend, meanwhile Monty had a thing where he watched dbza in the background while he animated rwby.
There was a mutual respect
This was a really fun special. I like Trunks and Gohan’s relationship was really well built up and I’m glad they brought back the dodge joke. The Androids lines were also hilarious I especially liked the line about the clothing shop. It’s also great to see that Master Roshi is still kicking he’s as funny as ever.

This is one of my favourite pieces of dbza media, it let's them exercise their dramatic muscles much more, Scott's scream as Trunks still gives me chills. You're kinda a few episodes early for this but it doesn't really matter since trunk's backstory can kinda be told any time at the start of his appearance
Edit: also it's a shame you didn't pick up on Vegeta screaming all the way from the past on Namek at 17:18

Yes this whole thing is before Frieza came to earth and also this was one of the most serious DBZ stories that’s probably why TFS made it a lil more tense to capture the original tone why also adding the comedy that we love TFS for😂
Bulma doesn't get a lot of attention in Z since she isn't a fighter, but she played a much bigger role in DragonBall. She was the one who found Goku living alone in the woods and recruited him to help her track down the dragon balls (so she could wish for a boyfriend)
Or a lifetime supply of strawberries. She was going between those wishes.

He was basically the whole mind behind RWBY (which ive never watched) but he was also very important in a lot of Rooster Teeth productions (he was the main animator on Red vs Blue) and animation in general on YT
Something to note is that Master Roshi is 300 years old and technically immortal after eating the Paradise Plant.
He can still die though. Probably just immune to dying by aging or something like that.
17 talking about being a park ranger is a reference to later Z where he becomes one and starts a family, this is his main thing in the sequel as well, Dragon Ball Super.

You probably won't notice this if you're not fans of the show, but almost every dramatic moment Trucks has, TeamFourStar plays Doctor Who music over it.
The outro of this special is also the intro to Doctor Who.
Because, well, they're both time travelers.....

They also used the Chrono Trigger festival music for the amusement park intro. Not DW related, but still time travel related.

Remember when Vegeta found out Gohan stole the Namekian Dragon Ball he dropped into a lake back in the Frieza saga? Then he started screaming so hard everyone heard him?
Therr is a part in that scene where the scream reaches Earth in the future and we see Trunks saying "Daddy?"
You can actually hear Vegeta scream in that exact same scene in this episode (17:20).
I think that was an amazing deatail throwback.

So I don't think it ever really is mentioned in the official show or the abridged version itself, but, you wanna know what makes Trunks's timeline REALLY dark?
The fact that everything that happens in this special, From Goku's heart virus results, to The Z Warriors being murdered one by one, to most if not all the towns being in ruins from the Androids, to everything Trunks had went through, to Gohan's death, etc.
ALL OF THIS was in fact part of the ORIGINAL TIMELINE of DBZ.
Everything that happened during the Saiyan Saga and Frieza saga leading up to this, was all a part of the original first timeline.
Once Trunks travelled back in time and once we saw him officially on the show, the main timeline switched from the original, to an alternate universe one since Trunks's interference changed certain events that would lead to the Androids causing destruction thus why Bulma mentioned Multiverse theory.
So just think, if Trunks never went back in time, the Dragonball series originally would've concluded in a much more depressing note.

The reason for the Monty Oum tribute was because they got him to play adult Gohan but he tragically died shortly before they could record the lines
This isn't just about Trunks' future, it's also the future where Gohan never makes peace w/ his father. (Goku)
One of the greatest aspects of s3 and this movie in particular is their ability to weave their wonderful brand of comedy in with surprisingly accurate story telling.
"The Story of Trunks" is dark and terrifying, and despite the very very limited training Trunks received in actuality, he still became incredibly strong.
He's a half-saiyan who has grown up on the edge of life and death, he has no capacity for mercy towards anyone who threaten the things he holds dear.
Given that Toriyama has FINALLY allowed Gohan and Trunks to age up, this one hits a little different now.

Never seen the abridged version of DBZ and it’s super funny. Watching it with you guys makes it 100x better. Also since I didn’t see you react to it, the end credits scene was a Doctor who opening theme song which was a cover or remixed and was funny to me.
Well, now you have a better understanding of Trunks, and his Bad Future. Even with TFS’ weird humor, this is probably the hardest DBZA episode to watch. SO many feels. 😭
Funny point: when they were doing the "everyday life continued even as the cyborgs were destroying city after city" thing and showed a bunch of citizens ignorant to the danger and the morning zoo radio stuff, they thought they were being satirical. Then Covid happened
24:30 It's funny you say Bulma isn't even a secondary character, because she IS the main female character in the series, and probably the most important character in the series in terms of plot advancement. She was the one who found Goku in the woods as a kid, and took him with her on the very first quest to find the Dragonballs.
Yeah Bulma in OG Drqgonball was the secondary Protagonist, so its nice they gave her more focus.
The sad thing is, Piccolo isn't in Gohan's head, the voice is just Gohan's imagination as when he was about to die, the voice confirms that he isn't really Piccolo.

Also its muted down quite a bit but if you remember back in episode 18 when Vegeta's "rage broke" and they could hear it 20 years later they put that back in to keep the continuity.

When trunks and Bulma are talking you can hear Vegeta’s scream in the background. It’s when ghost Nappa told him that gohan took the dragon Ball. It’s the scene where Bulma said she tried to replace him.
You might have missed it, but remember back in the Namek saga when Vegeta got so pissed, his scream echoed ridiculously? 😄
The original gohan vs androids final fight is so good and emotional, hope yall react to it after this!

The story of trunks is really sad in general but also one of the best moments when it comes to dragon ball.
Easy to miss easter egg: you can hear Vegeta's scream on Namek at the introduction of the time machine
The whole special in the real show has a real different feel to it than the rest of the series. Its one of the darker sections of the show.

Another youtube channel called RobotUnderdog2 made a live action adaptation of future Trunks's story that's actually pretty decent. It's called Dragon Ball Z - Light of Hope. The whole thing covers more of Trunks's story than you have seen at this point, but the pilot is spoiler free (and only about 10 min long). Oh, just be aware - it's meant to be serious, so it doesn't have DBZA's humor.
I can understand why Trunks' transformation/Gohan's death probably had to be cut, but it's still sad nonetheless to miss out on the reaction to such an impactful moment. Glad you guys enjoyed this special, though! Both in the original and in TFS's work, it's easily one of the best specials in DBZ. Plus, this definitely marked a major turn in not just being laughs, but TFS pulling in some genuine, moving narrative work; if the show as a whole came into its own with the Namek saga, I put forward that TFS came into their own with their writing as a whole - not just their comedy - with this special.

It is interesting that you guys can learn more about Bulma since in the original DragonBall with kid Goku, the 1st character he meets that starts his journey is Bulma. Bulma was definitely a lot more important back in the day before she got relegated to this side role.

The creator of DBZ based the the saga off the terminator series Trunks being John Connor and Android 16 is pretty much the terminator there is a episode where we see 16's metal skeleton and when you see it tell me just by looking at it you'll see the similarity

Team Four Star was on to something with Gohan using the Specual Beam Cannon. Who knew that would happen in the future
In OG Dragon Ball, Bulma was very important character. 2nd only to Goku, and maybe Krillin. Unfortunately, most people nowadays are more familiar with DBZ, and early Z didn't have much for Bulma to do, especially on Namek, where all she really did was complain. (Not a great first impression) Thankfully, she comes back into the spotlight with this season.
Also, if you can, you should react to the full version of Trunks' first transformation. It's one of the best in the series

MAN, what a devastating movie. i think i get emotional over it pretty much every time i watch; scott frerichs and zach holsman's performances as trunks and adult gohan respectively are just heart-wrenchingly tragic. can't give them enough credit for playing the scene where trunks finds gohan completely straight, no jokes to cut the tension.
also i LOVED your reactions to seeing gohan as an adult! seeing gohan grow over the course of the series is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of both DBZ and TFS's version. and absolutely agree, bulma is a fantastic character when she gets a chance to shine. you see more of her in the original dragon ball series (before Z) where she's almost the secondary protagonist for a while, but whenever she gets the spotlight, she's fantastic. only woman in the world strong enough to put with with vegeta AND raise trunks on her own in an apocalyptic timeline.
oh and she made a FREAKING TIME MACHINE THAT WORKS???? candidate for best 'genius inventor' type character in anime. loved the video, hope you have a lovely day and enjoy what's to come
What I've always found interesting with the "Androids" (cyborgs, really) is that you've a character like Frieza who has ruled the entire known Galaxy, and only the fulfilment of an ancient legend was able to finally end his reign, and yet some insane genius on Earth is able to take ordinary humans and turn them into these powerhouses that not only kick around Super Saiyans, but does so with little to no trouble. It's one thing with a certain character that'll be introduced later due to how he was made, but those two were just mere humans that became part machine, part human.
I don't know why, but this has always intrigued me. It makes me wonder just how powerful someone like Goku could potentially become if he too became a cyborg.

Dbz is usually split into 3(4 if you count gt). Dragon ball, z and super, but in the og dragon ball, Bulma was actually the main character alongside Goku, and the person that started the whole journey to begin with.
