I'm from Brazil, South America. The Scots are the best people I met when I was in the UK for an internship in 2007. They were so warm and kind to me. I really wish Scotland the best.
I'm Polish-Canadian. This relief of Scotland map made me cry. It makes me think how quickly things are forgotten. Thanks to two wonderful people the map is again possible to be enjoined. DW as always is the best.
I'm of Scottish descent and part of the Stewart Clan and entitled to wear the Stewart Plaid? My family is from the Borders (Dumfries & Galloway) I am a retired Mechanical Engineer and cant wait for the "wee krankie" and her mates to "piss off " and never ever try to rejoin the Union again? The way they did in approx 1620 when they were bankrupt by the Panama Canal "Project" when the Union "rescued" them! Before the Likes of NS and AS even existed to try to destroy "Caledonia!"

As an Italian, I have to say Scottish people are the best people I ever met. A beautiful country with amazing people. The personality you have and the proudness for your country make you similar to us. Even us Italians would die for our flag! Not many people may know this but it was a Scotsman, Mr. Allan Octavian Hume, that reinvigorated the Indian independence movement in 1883. Thanks to his ideas and motivation, we became independent 64 years later. I have great respect for the Scots, having visited Edinburg and the surrounding areas and my only wish is for them to taste the freedom that one of their ancestors created for us. Most of the history of settler colonies is steeped in driving the natives out, bringing settlers (most of them from Europe, but some from East Asia and the Arab world) and, in some cases, importing gigantic amounts of African slaves. Until today, social problems are still lingering, though the progress in previous decades has made these societies welcoming to citizens of all backgrounds. Basically, the migrant roots of the societies were adapted to better fit everyone who comes, in line with the previous progress for minorities there. The US is the leading example, and as much as people point out what Latin Americans experience near the border, the country is overall receptive to foreigners. If you pair the friendliness towards immigrants and the global influence of the US, you can see why this flexible vision of society and culture has spread so much outside its "original" space, and why it is more present on countries more influenced by the US. Countries elsewhere (basically, Eurasia and Africa) were mostly (except for *terrible* colonial borders) formed by the interactions between local native ethnicities/cultures and its neighbours. Some were invadors and spread their influence far away, like the Chinese in Eastern, Hindustanis in Southern Asia, Arabs in North Africa/Iberia, Vikings and Goths in Western Europe, Huns in the Carpathian basin, Ethiopians in Eastern Africa, Zulus in Southern Africa, Bantus in Central Africa etc. Besides the horrendous colonial borders mentioned earlier, nations have remained largely dominated by one culture and ethnicity, and foreigners are gradually absorbed into society. I'm no ethno-nationalist, because such ideology advocates for absolute ethnic purity, disregards how culture (morality, language, laws, traditions etc) can transform human beings regardless of their ethnic backgrounds and, worst of all, is terribly violent and anti-democratic. My point is this: every Eurasian/African nation has a dominant ethno-cultural background, challenged only by incoherent lines drawn on a map, not drawn by natives themselves. Excluding mass immigration (in other words, controled numbers of legal immigrants), the foreigners (and their descendants) who come to these countries absorb the local traditions and culture, and society also absorbs them. I can't say whether the current American view of immigration/cultural integration will stand, as it defies the norms and traditions present outside of the settler colony realm. What I can tell you is this: I'm not surprised at all about the focus of the documentary being on a local, Scottish point of view. Just like I'm not surprised by any documentary about, let's say, Iran, being dominated by a local, Iranian point of view, or any other example. It's a matter of history, and although former settler colonies are very prominent in the world stage, they're definitely not the norm. There are different proccesses which led to the formation of the societies worldwide, and every region has its own, so don't worry about not all societies adhering to one of the different societal bases there are. For example, people (especially whites) who campaign for nativism in the Americas and Oceania are stupid, their views are incoherent with their own immigrant background and history. I am English and live in Scotland on the English border. I moved from the industrial north of England ten years ago because of the opportunities in Scotland. Scotland is powered by wind turbines and has a far lower carbon footprint. Scotgov encourages innovation so we have a factory working with cutting edge materials which are eco friendly. My son is French and I look forward to the time an independent Scotland joins the EU.
@The505Guys I was born in England, then worked for the French Government for many years and have children who considered themselves French... returned to England for a couple of years and then Scotland. I consider myself Scottish at heart, then French and a long way back English.
One whole factory wow. I mean Scotland is brimming with factories ??? NO IT IS NOT. All the innovation happens in the south. Scotland is not powered by wind turbines. Wind power is inconsistent and means that energy costs are far higher because of this, you might want to learn a bit about energy production as you obviously know nothing.
@@billjane5522 I work with others on a project to convert end of life tyres into decorative boards using nano technology, using the cheap power provided by wind. Thanks to the vandals from London there are fewer factories. However the level of intelligence has obviously declined considerably since I left England.
I have depression, anxiety and stress, its hard to concentrate in any activity or watching a video. But this Documentary so well made, I watched it whole.

I am Scottish and love Greek people particularly Cretan! I am also struck by our similarities. Our warmth and generous nature, our acceptance and welcome of strangers and our love of a good party!! I also can totally identify with Cretans distance in attitude and personality from Athens as it seems to mirror many Scots feelings about Westminster. After Scotland, Crete has the most wonderful people on earth.
I am Scottish but have some Geek blood in me on my Dad's side of the family though my Gran but I dont know the full story. But if you could see some of my family you could see The Greek blood is in us.
Its funny to me that Ethiopians share a lot in common with Scots and shepherds as well. I love them. I don't know many Scots. Just a lady who sewed my cat her vests in tartan and tweed fabrics. My high school was the Highland Park Scots but those guys were a bit rude to put it mildly. I love Greek food. And dance.

Personally as a British person, I used to be a GB Unionist and believed it was better for Scotland to remain in the UK. However, after Brexit in 2016, and now even hard-line, mainstream Brexiteer channels now saying that Boris Johnson’s Tory government in England is the most corrupt in UK history, with unprecedented levels of corruption, cronyism and sleaze, things are very different now in the UK, than they were in 2016. I regretfully now believe it is now better that Scotland leaves the UK before they are engulfed by the corruption and sleaze coming from Boris Johnson’s Tory government in England. There are also undemocratic changes made by Boris Johnson’s government under the “Internal Markets Bill” will take away a lot of the independent democratic powers of the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and make it virtually impossible for them to avoid the corruption and sleaze coming up from Boris Johnson’s government. 🇬🇧🤬

As a born and bred Scot, I have to say this is one the best interesting and factual documentaries, going to Sophie at 27:00 where she says I pride myself in saying I'm Scottish before I'm british. That's exactly me. Just hearing other local peoples beliefs that is the same as mine feels amazing. Scotland and England are very different, one I don't think English people will understand. Most English people have never been to Scotland and are completely ignorant of everything about it, from scenery to culture to architecture, with their knowledge of Scotland being informed by Trainspotting, Taggart and other stereotypical representations. Although I live overseas now, I spent most of my life pre-25 years old in Scotland (Aberdeenshire and Edinburgh).
I pride myself in being Scottish first then British. England prides itself in being English. We are an island. All the romantic documentary's in the world wont change the fact that we will be better off staying British. We need a say in our future yes but no way do i think we should go in to Europe again.

Scotland will forever be one of my fav countries and something in my bucket list to visit since my school was founded by a Scottish missionary and several Scottish teachers served in past as our headmasters, the school itself named 'Scottish church'(college named as well). Despite living millions of kms away from this country, I feel like always connected to and fascinated about its culture, crest and flag. Students of my school are nicknamed 'Scott's, and we feel like we're part of that nation as well. Love u Scotland, from India💙

I’m in the same boat, I was born in England, but have English, Scottish and Irish heritage, but with a little bit of Welsh too. We currently live in West Wales, but my partner is training to be a kiltmaker and we plan to move to Scotland next spring. Neither of us want to live in England ever again, too many closed minded people.
Scotland's relationship to England is a lot like Canada's to her powerful southern neighbour. Canada has a few degrees more political autonomy than Scotland does although in the words of a past Prime Minister in reference to the US: “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.” Canada is similarly culturally divergent from it's giant southern neighbour.
Feels apples to oranges. The only real similarity is that both countries have more powerful neighbors, which is true of many nations. The Canada-Britain is actually more analogous to Scotland-Britain.

Im an American but went to University and worked in England. While there, I first visited Scotland in 1970 and thought then that the Scots were very different from the English. More direct, tribal. I love the place. Hiked the WHW. Sent one of my kids to St Andrews. Cant wait to get back.

In my lifetime I have formed the impression that a United Ireland plus an independent Scotland and Wales would be a very natural happening and would be an appealing prospect to most people in the United Kingdom.

I'm Welsh Born, lived in England the majority of my life, and served 8 of 10 years of my British Army career in Scotland. I love all 3 countries equally and if Scotland wants independence they should be allowed it! I wish we could all just get along.
As a Scot, we will get on better when our larger neighbouring country, (England) stops trying to keep us chained to them. The fact that the country of Scotland can be outvoted by the city of London in the UK Parliament says it all. We have our own Parliament in Scotland, yet the UK Parliament keeps sticking its nose in.
I'm from Shimla, India. It's a big town in Himachal Pradesh. Our town, roads and railway was build by Scottish people in 1700. You can see the Scottish graves and Castles here.

I live in Limburg at the edge of the Netherlands, stuck between, Germany, French en Flemisch Belgium. We speak our own dialect and also feel like we are no part of the Dutch. Our opinion on live is so much different than the North. I know how the Scottisch feel and have those independent feelings. Scotland is a great and most beautiful country which I visited several times now
@@jamesmedina2062 Limburg is a lovely area, my sister lives in Heythuisen. As for the dialect, every town and village has their own dialect, which can be frustrating if you have taken the trouble to learn dutch. That's where the term " double dutch " stems from.

Scotland does not disappoint! If & when you do go, be sure to travel Northward and tour the Highlands. The landscape is absolutely stunning up there - & if you can continue beyond the Pentland Firth, Orkney's profoundly mysterious archaeology awaits.

What a beautiful country, amazing landscapes and great people with a different ideology of their own. @The505Guys well they are definitely not states. The United Kingdom is a state. If any of these four constitute countries is actually a country it's Scotland. Wales and Northern Ireland aren't really countries, and England kind of is the United Kingdom.
This is poor stuff. The majority of Scots live in the Central Belt and this is barely acknowledged here. Life is not all green fields, tweed and fresh air as this film puts across. There is huge poverty, deprivation, ill-health and disaffection with politicians of all parties - there is no clear path to the future for Scotland as it is the few monied landowners and big businesses whose needs will come first - just as they did during the independence referendum when they and their lackies frightened people with so many lies and again during the Brexit vote when we were promised milk and honey. The rest of the world, as is reflected in the comments below, sees Scotland as a quant place to go on holiday. Nuff said.
Got to agree with you. As a Scot, I am in constant state of patriotic ambivalence; there is a heck of a lot to be proud of as a Scot, but my god do we have some shocking issues. of course, all countries have issues. This documentary turns a blind eye to what it's actually like to live in Scotland. It's like doing a documentary on Brazil and only talking about the Amazon region.
My childhood best friend is living in Scotland. Hope to visit someday. My Hay clan ancestors arrived in Louisiana from Scotland in 1850... 7th generation Texan.
I'm a New Zealander and proud of my Scottish heritage - 75% Scots, 12.5% Welsh, 12.5% Irish and not a drap of the Sassenach :-) Grandad George was a Presbyterian minister amongst the inhumanity of the Corbels (slum area) Glasgow, around 1905. There was much misery there and he was a hard man. Come to the province of Otago and you'll see how similar the land is to Scotland's and why immigrants settled there.
As a Scot I don't feel particularly European and when asked I'm a Scot not a Brit. Having said that I find the English to be incredibly tolerant and friendly. They are a fantastic neighbour to have and I'm sure this will continue wether we have our own sovereignty or not.
On may 6th we the Scottish will go the polling stations and that on our future in the United Kingdom. Whether you pro independence or anti independence. At the end of the day we are all Scottish. And we all get to live in this amazing country. From Aberdeen’s industries, To Edinburgh’s history, from Glasgow’s forward thinking people to Dundee’s modern art. All together a great place to be 🏴🏴🏴

I have all the time in the world for our Scottish Celtic cousins. Wonderful people, great cities, and spectacular scenery, almost as good as Ireland's.
as an Irishman having been to the Scottish highlands, I can safely say their scenery tops ours by a wee bit. Two very beautiful countries - England and wales are also lovely.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see no negative comments or being hateful or making fun of people or mocking them. I'll be in Glasgow in months, hopefully, and being able to see it from the perspective of people who don't mock Scots is really helpful.

Scotland is a special place, so different than many places I have been. It is definitely different than England. I wish I get more chances to see more of Scotland after I retire and after travel is allowed.
As an Irish person from Ireland I felt at home when I first visited Scotland I found the people so friendly. The landscape is beautiful and breathtaking. I grew up knowing many scottish songs and scottish history - Bony Prince Charlie,Battles etc.. Irish music and Scottish music have much in common not forgetting the Gaelic language once spoken in the Highland and islands of Scotland and getting somewhat of a revival in recent years.
I don't believe the Scots will ever vote to leave the UK. It would mean that a border would run across the island. That the Scots can't freely travel, study, work or move to the UK anymore. The economy of Scotland could grind to a complete halt. And membership of the EU is not expected to be achieved very soon. Member states with national minorities (like Spain f.i.) would block this to avoid a precedent. So much would be lossed, while the desired gains are very unsure

@@Abraham_Tsfaye Ireland is member of the EU, Scotland is not. And the treaties about EU membership make it impossible to become a member in the forseeable future. It's a process that takes decades. That is if the 27 members want Scotland to become a member in the first place. Currently there are several of them who would veto this for domestic reasons. Now it is up to the Scots to decide about their independance. But they sbould realize a EU memebership is not very likely in the first decades.
Before Covid-19 the last time I was outside the US was Scotland in 2019. Scotland has to be probably my favorite place I've seen so far. I'm only 21 and I've been to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Dominican Republic, France, and Austria, but Scotland is by far my favorite trip. I plan on going again. Actually I wanna move to the Isle of Skye one day. That island was just so peaceful, beautiful, full of baby sheep, good nice people, adventure and calm weather, (well at least it was when I was there). Scotland's hilly landscape kinda reminds me of my home Pennsylvania in a way. I like it. Monastery in Fort Augustest? I think that was the name of the town below Lockness. I saw the castle were Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed at. Edinburgh was a fun city too, the whole 3 days I was there it was sunny. Before I left Scotland I even saw the UK's aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Love from America.
Aye it's nice alright up Skye and especially in the sun, but don't go thinking it's like that all the time. Google sunshine map UK and you'll see it's among the gloomiest places in Europe.
I'm from Skye, lived here all my life. It's a great wee place where everyone knows everyone - but it can be a hard and lonely life during the winter months. Many southern English people move to Skye but struggle with loneliness or not knowing people. We are very welcoming though and we will very much welcome you here. Have a good yin!

@@robson2939 Absolute Tripe! Read some history, we became part of the United Kingdom by the 1707 Act of Parliament. Yes the Jacobites rebelled and resisted but the vast majority of my country did not (like the 2 referendums we had in which the majority of the country voted to stay in the union). We've had a very happy union for the past 315 years and many more to come!

The union today has provided Scotland (through the Barnett Formula) with a lifeblood keeping our economy afloat where Oil and financial services are deficit to our expenditure. I live in London and go to university in Scotland. For what it's worth I also have Scottish and Irish grandparents. As much as I don't want Scotland to leave the UK, they have every right to. I think in the long term, a large federal nation, when set up in an equal way, has a lot more to offer than lots of small independent states, but the UK doesn't have that. Power and wealth has been concentrated more and more in London and a few other cities in England, and has caused people in other parts of the UK, especially in more rural areas, to migrate to the cities, which has created even more political and economic inequality. Without some major changes to the UK and a government that prioritises the regions over the cities, Scotland will better off outside the UK. If people want to see a more prosperous country in future, the most important thing to do is vote. Too many people in this country feel disillusioned with politics and don't see the point in participating, but that makes it worse. The smaller the proportion that politicians are representing, the worse that representation is, and the more disillusioned people feel. Vote in every election and get involved. Vote for people that will pass the policies you want to see. Otherwise the political rot that we currently see will only get worse.

Being Scots is about a culture, especially if you are from the Hebrides (inner or outer) and a connection with family, cuisine and language. Only there is Gaelic kept alive.

I'm British (English for you nationalists) and I don't really see anything in this that I could say was different to anywhere else in the UK. We've all got similar problems, similar complaints and attitudes. I was also expecting more about an actually independent Scotland the practicalities/issues are, not just wishy washy 'we're different because we don't like X'

As an Italian, I have to say Scottish people are the best people I ever met. A beautiful country with amazing people. The personality you have and the proudness for your country make you similar to us. Even us Italians would die for our flag! Then the atmosphere I found in Scotland, was something unique that I could not find anywhere else in the UK.

Not many people may know this but it was a Scotsman, Mr. Allan Octavian Hume, that reinvigorated the Indian independence movement in 1883. Thanks to his ideas and motivation, we became independent 64 years later. I have great respect for the Scots, having visited Edinburg and the surrounding areas and my only wish is for them to taste the freedom that one of their ancestors created for us. As a Brazilian, I get to see how former settler colonies (including my own country, but most prominently the USA/Canada/Australia/NZ) developed differently from other societies, as you pointed out Scotland. Most of the history of settler colonies is steeped in driving the natives out, bringing settlers (most of them from Europe, but some from East Asia and the Arab world) and, in some cases, importing gigantic amounts of African slaves. Until today, social problems are still lingering, though the progress in previous decades has made these societies welcoming to citizens of all backgrounds. Basically, the migrant roots of the societies were adapted to better fit everyone who comes, in line with the previous progress for minorities there. The US is the leading example, and as much as people point out what Latin Americans experience near the border, the country is overall receptive to foreigners. If you pair the friendliness towards immigrants and the global influence of the US, you can see why this flexible vision of society and culture has spread so much outside its "original" space, and why it is more present on countries more influenced by the US.
Countries elsewhere (basically, Eurasia and Africa) were mostly (except for *terrible* colonial borders) formed by the interactions between local native ethnicities/cultures and its neighbours. Some were invadors and spread their influence far away, like the Chinese in Eastern, Hindustanis in Southern Asia, Arabs in North Africa/Iberia, Vikings and Goths in Western Europe, Huns in the Carpathian basin, Ethiopians in Eastern Africa, Zulus in Southern Africa, Bantus in Central Africa etc.
Besides the horrendous colonial borders mentioned earlier, nations have remained largely dominated by one culture and ethnicity, and foreigners are gradually absorbed into society.
I'm no ethno-nationalist, because such ideology advocates for absolute ethnic purity, disregards how culture (morality, language, laws, traditions etc) can transform human beings regardless of their ethnic backgrounds and, worst of all, is terribly violent and anti-democratic.
My point is this: every Eurasian/African nation has a dominant ethno-cultural background, challenged only by incoherent lines drawn on a map, not drawn by natives themselves. Excluding mass immigration (in other words, controled numbers of legal immigrants), the foreigners (and their descendants) who come to these countries absorb the local traditions and culture, and society also absorbs them.
I can't say whether the current American view of immigration/cultural integration will stand, as it defies the norms and traditions present outside of the settler colony realm.
What I can tell you is this: I'm not surprised at all about the focus of the documentary being on a local, Scottish point of view. Just like I'm not surprised by any documentary about, let's say, Iran, being dominated by a local, Iranian point of view, or any other example. It's a matter of history, and although former settler colonies are very prominent in the world stage, they're definitely not the norm.
There are different proccesses which led to the formation of the societies worldwide, and every region has its own, so don't worry about not all societies adhering to one of the different societal bases there are. For example, people (especially whites) who campaign for nativism in the Americas and Oceania are stupid, their views are incoherent with their own immigrant background and history.

I am English and live in Scotland on the English border. I moved from the industrial north of England ten years ago because of the opportunities in Scotland. Scotland is powered by wind turbines and has a far lower carbon footprint. Scotgov encourages innovation so we have a factory working with cutting edge materials which are eco friendly. My son is French and I look forward to the time an independent Scotland joins the EU.

Thanks to the vandals from London there are fewer factories. However the level of intelligence has obviously declined considerably since I left England.

As a born and bred Scot, I have to say this is one the best interesting and factual documentaries, going to Sophie at 27:00 where she says I pride myself in saying I'm Scottish before I'm british. That's exactly me. Just hearing other local peoples beliefs that is the same as mine feels amazing. Scotland and England are very different, one I don't think English people will understand. Most English people have never been to Scotland and are completely ignorant of everything about it, from scenery to culture to architecture, with their knowledge of Scotland being informed by Trainspotting, Taggart and other stereotypical representations. Although I live overseas now, I spent most of my life pre-25 years old in Scotland (Aberdeenshire and Edinburgh).

Scotland will forever be one of my fav countries and something in my bucket list to visit since my school was founded by a Scottish missionary and several Scottish teachers served in past as our headmasters, the school itself named 'Scottish church'(college named as well). Despite living millions of kms away from this country, I feel like always connected to and fascinated about its culture, crest and flag. Scotland's relationship to England is a lot like Canada's to her powerful southern neighbour. Canada has a few degrees more political autonomy than Scotland does although in the words of a past Prime Minister in reference to the US: “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.” Canada is similarly culturally divergent from it's giant southern neighbour.

Im an American but went to University and worked in England. While there, I first visited Scotland in 1970 and thought then that the Scots were very different from the English. More direct, tribal. I love the place. Hiked the WHW. Sent one of my kids to St Andrews. Cant wait to get back.

I'm Welsh Born, lived in England the majority of my life, and served 8 of 10 years of my British Army career in Scotland. I love all 3 countries equally and if Scotland wants independence they should be allowed it! I wish we could all just get along.

As a Scot, we will get on better when our larger neighbouring country, (England) stops trying to keep us chained to them. The fact that the country of Scotland can be outvoted by the city of London in the UK Parliament says it all. We have our own Parliament in Scotland, yet the UK Parliament keeps sticking its nose in.

I live in Limburg at the edge of the Netherlands, stuck between, Germany, French en Flemisch Belgium. We speak our own dialect and also feel like we are no part of the Dutch. Our opinion on live is so much different than the North. I know how the Scottisch feel and have those independent feelings. Scotland is a great and most beautiful country which I visited several times now

Limburg is a lovely area, my sister lives in Heythuisen.
As for the dialect, every town and village has their own dialect, which can be frustrating if you have taken the trouble to learn dutch.
That's where the term " double dutch " stems from.

This is poor stuff. The majority of Scots live in the Central Belt and this is barely acknowledged here. Life is not all green fields, tweed and fresh air as this film puts across. There is huge poverty, deprivation, ill-health and disaffection with politicians of all parties - there is no clear path to the future for Scotland as it is the few monied landowners and big businesses whose needs will come first - just as they did during the independence referendum when they and their lackies frightened people with so many lies and again during the Brexit vote when we were promised milk and honey. The rest of the world, as is reflected in the comments below, sees Scotland as a quant place to go on holiday. Nuff said.
Got to agree with you. As a Scot, I am in constant state of patriotic ambivalence; there is a heck of a lot to be proud of as a Scot, but my god do we have some shocking issues. of course, all countries have issues. This documentary turns a blind eye to what it's actually like to live in Scotland. It's like doing a documentary on Brazil and only talking about the Amazon region.

I'm a New Zealander and proud of my Scottish heritage - 75% Scots, 12.5% Welsh, 12.5% Irish and not a drap of the Sassenach :-) Grandad George was a Presbyterian minister amongst the inhumanity of the Corbels (slum area) Glasgow, around 1905. There was much misery there and he was a hard man. Come to the province of Otago and you'll see how similar the land is to Scotland's and why immigrants settled there.

As a Scot I don't feel particularly European and when asked I'm a Scot not a Brit. Having said that I find the English to be incredibly tolerant and friendly. They are a fantastic neighbour to have and I'm sure this will continue wether we have our own sovereignty or not.

I have all the time in the world for our Scottish Celtic cousins. Wonderful people, great cities, and spectacular scenery, almost as good as Ireland's.
as an Irishman having been to the Scottish highlands, I can safely say their scenery tops ours by a wee bit. Two very beautiful countries - England and wales are also lovely.

Scotland is a special place, so different than many places I have been. It is definitely different than England. I wish I get more chances to see more of Scotland after I retire and after travel is allowed.

I felt at home when I first visited Scotland I found the people so friendly. The landscape is beautiful and breathtaking. I grew up knowing many scottish songs and scottish history - Bony Prince Charlie,Battles etc.. Irish music and Scottish music have much in common
not forgetting the Gaelic language once spoken in the Highland and islands of Scotland and getting somewhat of a revival in recent years.

I don't believe the Scots will ever vote to leave the UK.
It would mean that a border would run across the island. That the Scots can't freely travel, study, work or move to the UK anymore. The economy of Scotland could grind to a complete halt.
And membership of the EU is not expected to be achieved very soon. Member states with national minorities (like Spain f.i.) would block this to avoid a precedent.
So much would be lossed, while the desired gains are very unsure
It's a matter of 'when' and not 'if'.
Republic of Ireland is a flourishing country. So Scotland can be too.
No point hanging on to a dying decayed entity that is UK. It's a broken country.

And the treaties about EU membership make it impossible to become a member in the forseeable future. It's a process that takes decades.
That is if the 27 members want Scotland to become a member in the first place. Currently there are several of them who would veto this for domestic reasons.
Now it is up to the Scots to decide about their independance. But they sbould realize a EU memebership is not very likely in the first decades.

Before Covid-19 the last time I was outside the US was Scotland in 2019. Scotland has to be probably my favorite place I've seen so far. I'm only 21 and I've been to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Dominican Republic, France, and Austria, but Scotland is by far my favorite trip. I plan on going again. Actually I wanna move to the Isle of Skye one day. That island was just so peaceful, beautiful, full of baby sheep, good nice people, adventure and calm weather, (well at least it was when I was there). Scotland's hilly landscape kinda reminds me of my home Pennsylvania in a way. I like it. Monastery in Fort Augustest? I think that was the name of the town below Lockness. I saw the castle were Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed at. Edinburgh was a fun city too, the whole 3 days I was there it was sunny. Before I left Scotland I even saw the UK's aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Love from America.
Aye it's nice alright up Skye and especially in the sun, but don't go thinking it's like that all the time. Google sunshine map UK and you'll see it's among the gloomiest places in Europe.
I'm from Skye, lived here all my life. It's a great wee place where everyone knows everyone - but it can be a hard and lonely life during the winter months. Many southern English people move to Skye but struggle with loneliness or not knowing people. We are very welcoming though and we will very much welcome you here. Have a good yin!

@@robson2939 Absolute Tripe! Read some history, we became part of the United Kingdom by the 1707 Act of Parliament. Yes the Jacobites rebelled and resisted but the vast majority of my country did not (like the 2 referendums we had in which the majority of the country voted to stay in the union). We've had a very happy union for the past 315 years and many more to come!

I live in London and go to university in Scotland. For what it's worth I also have Scottish and Irish grandparents.
As much as I don't want Scotland to leave the UK, they have every right to. I think in the long term, a large federal nation, when set up in an equal way, has a lot more to offer than lots of small independent states, but the UK doesn't have that. Power and wealth has been concentrated more and more in London and a few other cities in England, and has caused people in other parts of the UK, especially in more rural areas, to migrate to the cities, which has created even more political and economic inequality. Without some major changes to the UK and a government that prioritises the regions over the cities, Scotland will better off outside the UK.
If people want to see a more prosperous country in future, the most important thing to do is vote. Too many people in this country feel disillusioned with politics and don't see the point in participating, but that makes it worse. The smaller the proportion that politicians are representing, the worse that representation is, and the more disillusioned people feel. Vote in every election and get involved. Vote for people that will pass the policies you want to see. Otherwise the political rot that we currently see will only get worse.

I'm British (English for you nationalists) and I don't really see anything in this that I could say was different to anywhere else in the UK. We've all got similar problems, similar complaints and attitudes. I was also expecting more about an actually independent Scotland the practicalities/issues are, not just wishy washy 'we're different because we don't like X'
100% Agree I really see no difference whatsoever I've Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Danish and French friends and strangely enough we're all pretty much the same who'd have thought it. I'd genuinely love to know from those that want independence what it is in their daily lives that England does to them that makes them fixate on so called independence, and what they believe would change afterwards instead of just some vaporous idea of controlling the direction of the country.
