Paid £195 for mine as an ex shop display watch and am very happy with it. Generally I’ve found that Citizen’s are better built for the money than the equivalent Seiko, they don’t seem to suffer anywhere near the amount of misaligned bezels, hands etc
I don't agree. The Miyota 8 series movements they use in their entry level watches are pretty horrible. It's why the Ali Express brands tend to favour the NH35. It's a more refined movement
Casing-wise Citizen watches are the tad above Seiko (maybe) but paying anything more than $150for a watch with a $25 Miyota 8x movement in it seems like a ripoff of feebleminded rest of us.
I like the Tsuyosa. In my opinion it counts as a budged watch given it's from a major brand and offers sapphire crystal and a hacking automatic movement. Try and find a Seiko integrated bracelet sports watch with similar specs as at a similar price.
It's certainly a "hype watch". However if you are 100% objective and only look at the facts, then watch reviews would be a series of videos reading from a spec sheet. Subjective thoughts however make this whole thing we call watch collecting interesting, and reviewers have been giving it a thumbs up. If you look solely at specs, Pagani Design are the greatest watchmakers ever. And somehow I doubt many people would agree to that statement.
If you believe the whole "everyone rips everyone else off" trope, Pagani very well may be the greatest watchmaker of all time, for economically democratizing art.
I have had mine now for about a year, and I am extremely pleased with it. Sure the crown is ridiculously small and the clasp is sub standard, but the rest of the watch is brilliant. It has that eye catching effect. I see on Chrono 24 they are selling at around $250.
I have this watch in the yellow dial - I chose yellow over the Tiffany dial. A great watch, however, the crown is an absolutely HORRIBLE design for winding.
Couple of points to consider. 1) Citizen hasn't pushed automatic watches outside of the Asian markets for sometime with the rest of the world having mostly EcoDrive offerings. 2) While not a direct homage of the DateJust it has some shared characteristics but more budget offering. 3) The polished folding clasp is typical for Citizen I have owned several and all of them that came on bracelet had a polished folding. Overall it's a good offering and around 50% of the PRX automatic.
You get an automatic movement for the same price as a quartz PRX. I think it's a pretty decent deal, plenty of people are hesitant to buy a cheap Chinese watch, so another name-brand automatic in the under-$500 bracket is always good to see.
Citizen have been selling mechanical watches on the down low outside of Asia. Brand perception is very different in the west compared to Japan. Consumers don't really understand or appreciate tiering within the same brand and look down on Seiko and Citizen because of how cheap their lowest tier watches are. Seiko took years of expensive marketing to chance perceptions and I would argue they have had limited success and only really in the collector community. Citizen has chosen to buy western brands instead.
I think a lot of people expect Tissot levels of finishing for the same price. What you do get is a decent retro design from a well respected manufacturer at an ok price, an automatic for a similar price to the PRX Quartz. When Seiko are charging similar prices for a design they've used for many years on their 5KX I don't think the Citizen is unreasonable. It's not for me though.
I don't get why people are comparing this with the PRX as the automatic version isn't at a comparable price point, more than double the RRP in fact. The Tsuyosa is a good option for those wanting a stylish and affordable automatic that will no doubt be durable and reliable. Tissot quality and value is not all it is cracked up to be and given the price difference you could actually buy both a Tsuyosa and a PRX quartz (more convincing than the automatic IMHO) for the same price as a PRX automatic.
@@paulc9588The Citizen automatic is at a similar price point to the Tissot quartz. The Tissot automatic is about double the price. All things considered, unless I just wanted a Tissot, I'd go with the Citizen in this case.

Very fair and accurate observations of this watch. I am more than pleased with my Tsuyosa (it has the pebbly blue dial). I had a PRX, but I like this better. The Powermatic80 in my PRX developed a helicopter rotor situation after having it for about 3 months (I also had a MIDO with a version of the Powermatic80, and it also developed the same issue), I sent it back to Tissot to be serviced and it took quite a while to come back. I picked up the Tusyosa around that time. I had both watches at the same time for month or so (and there were ample opportunities to compare them) and then when the Powermatic80 in the MIDO acted up, I sold both the MIDO and the PRX (and I'm guessing that it will be some time before I think about a Powermatic 80 movement again). When I had both the Tusyosa & the PRX, the Tsuyosa got more wrist time. For my wrist, It's more comfortable and I prefer the look of the bracelet to the flat link looks of the PRX. As for cost, Citizen has priced it at $450 here in the US , but I was able to get mine from Masters in Time for about $280. $450 is WAY too much for this watch lol. I could not agree with you more about the clasp on the otherwise nice bracelet. What in the world are they thinking? And the crown is a bit small and hard for my sausage like fingers to easily use. It's a pretty good watch for less than $300, but would not look at it for much more than that. My experience is as told above, YMMV.

Seems like a case of managed expectations. For $250-280 I'd think this watch is great, and it can be had for that price. But $450 is right out. Thanks for the honest review!
Several options on Amazon including the orange dial arguably the best at £229 pretty decent value at that I think better than equivalent Seikos which I own 🙁
It's a nice watch, but I definitely don't regret getting a PRX instead. The quartz dial is so underrated (and I found one new for only $220 because of it)
In the U.K. You can purchase it at just over £200 if you dig down the internet rabbit hole. I personally thought it gained attention from the dial colours that really popped.
It’s an ok watch for the price, only if you can pay well below retail. It’s small on the wrist so if you lean towards a mid to large wrist it will look small. Finish is just ok and comfort is good. The bracelet punches above its weight and looks damn nice. All in all a good but not great watch if you can score one for a bargain well below retail. If I had to chose again I would pick the PRS as its bigger and better made. I have the light blue dial one and have to say I do enjoy the colour.
Its about $249 dollars in the USA for most colors. Its a good watch but not PRX good. But it is an alternative to it specially if you want a mechanical watch. The Prx is more than double the price. It is a budget watch after all
The crown is an absolute nightmare. I bought one and it looks nice enough. But the crown was a pain in the a** to the point that you can’t even wind the damn watch if you have big fingers like mine. My bracelet was also squeaky af. Sold it pretty quickly.
Got this for 240€ but i would've never payed more than 250 for this. Its a great looking watch with nice specs but it is not worth 300 pounds or 400 dollars
As someone who is (still) lusting over the the PRX, the Tsuyosa was kind of a swing and a miss to me. This video weirdly made me like it more 😂 I guess I just don't like when people are hyperbolic about anything
I have one, and although I like it, it hasn't by any means captured my heart. It's better than the PRX, but it wears thick for some reason, I find the crown difficult to manipulate, and I'm disappointed in the pressed clasp. I find myself grabbing the Maen Manhattan 37 far more often, but this completely replaced the PRX. Good, but not great, is my verdict.
the only tsuyosa i want is the white one. Sadly, its never on sale and you have the pay way more then for the orange or black one ^^ Or i want one of the new pantone collection, but they are over 100 dollar more
Well, I bought one of these, and while it's not awful, it's not all that great either. The dial looks nice enough, but the lume is entirely useless. Citizen could do better. The 4 o'clock crown is difficult to use, and has no real advantage. The caseback protrudes well below the bottom of the lugs, so the watch stands much higher than it ought to. It's effectively too thick. The quality of the bracelet is fine, but I find the 5-part construction more blingy than I like. Overall it's just OK, and I don't wear it as much as I should, given the rather high price. I have a bunch (too many) of relatively inexpensive Seikos that I like better and wear more. Not to mention a few Chinese watches that offer much better specs and design for half the money.
Cyclops windows are usually set to see the date when you tilt your wrist, and are therefore off centre. Many reviewers don't seem to understand this simple fact.
I bought a black one on Black Friday last year. The crown sucks if you have giant hands like me. The clasp is stamped garbage. Adding a milled clasp made the watch perfectly balanced on my wrist and I wear it 8/10 times I wear a watch now after over a year. I've picked up a couple more watches since and they are just collecting dust
i have a soft spot for pressed clasp inners.. i slipped on the stairs about 30 years ago and my TAG bracelet caught and broke a pine spindle slowing me down and although the clasp inner twisted and needed replacing (about $40 at a TAG service centre back in the day) something had to give and i'd rather it was the clasp not the bracelet and certainly not me!
The bright flat white dial is by far my favorite aspect of the watch. I just think it is a really pretty watch. It is a mechanical watch watch, with a sapphire crystal, and solid link bracelet for under $400 street price. I'm not going to lie, I really really like this watch.
It’s a very budget friendly appealing combination of the daydate (bracelet) and the OP (dial, hour markers), But they missed it on a few things, spending the money for a viewing caseback vs a solid caseback and putting the $ in a better clasp was a mistake for citizen, the crown is not great, and the cyclops is terrible, so yes it’s a sub
Its most definitely a PRX killer. Ive had several lads come through my shop looking to the PRX and I present the tsuyosa as an alternate and people fall in love with it. The small seconds release is pretty damn snazz for the money.
This watch have one major issue and it's lack of 100m WR it's only 50 and i don't understand why, it is not a dress watch it's more sporty with loom and bracelet which is well integrated so let me jump in to the pool, if i can't swim with sporty watch than what's the point? i will go for proper dress watch....
I would really like that Citizen makes a more quality version of this watch. Just add 100m water resistance and a better clasp, but I still really like it. It is such a timeless design and suited for almost every occasion. If you ask me, it looks better then gentleman, prx, alpinist or seiko 5.
Can be found for $200/$250 so a lot cheaper. I have the yellow dial. +5 seconds per day. I like it. I just wish the bracelet was less rounded. It should be like the back of the bracelet.
Hey Gary, I agree with most of the things you said. If you find it for the right price (poor Americans), it's a nice watch. But you really should have picked another colour. 50% of the charme of this one comes from the vibrant colours. Cheers
I think the watch is great and the specs may not be amazing as far as it’s comparison the bracelets is so comfortable. Lots of 200$ watches in seiko market you’d need to replace the bracelets.
My first watch was Tissot gentelman. Blue dial, quartz. I love it. A few watches later, i fell in love with the PRX, tried it on, and it felt really cheap. I am sorry, but the bracelet feels too light. The whole watch has this cheap filing. And the lug to lug is really to big for my wrist. The small one looks funny. So yeah, Rolex killer no, but PRX killer,...
The bracelet was the reason why I said no to this one. It just doesn't look like it *should* be what's integrated. It looks like any old bracelet that was put onto a watch, just happened this one was integrated.
I have this watch, got it on sale for $314 USD. I mainly bought it as a Summer watch, I got the light blue dial. Is it the greatest watch I’ve ever owned? Not even close. Is it a bad watch? No. Unfortunately some reviewers tend to over embellish and consequently and unfairly give this watch a bar it can never reach.
Thank you for a balanced and reliable review as always! I thought the same about the clasp and having already got a Citizen Eco-Drive Calibre H820 with an incredibly well made bracelet and milled clasp, it would a downgrade in quality to get this watch, although its simplicity of use would be a massive improvement 😂
My wife gave me the green dial version for a Christmas present. She got a great deal at $235 US. I also like the Tissot PRX but at over $600 it has been out of my price range. The Tsuyosa saved the day and filled the gap nicely.
If your wife gave it to you , you than have the best watch money can buy. The prx isn't worth the 250 to 300 more price point. I have many watches and find myself going to my green citizens. My grand Seiko, Hamilton, oreints and Tissot are sitting in watch my watch case as like you, my wife got it for me on my bday😊
The four problems I have with this watch at this price point are number one the second hand is so thin as to be virtually invisible especially as it rounds at 12:00 position. Number two the two digit date is incredibly difficult to read especially with the cyclops which apparently has no advantage whatsoever. Number three the crown at the 4:30 position is impossible to wine manually with two fingers and is difficult to set the time in the third position. And last again at this price point having a stamped clasp instead of a milled one is ridiculous especially if a Chinese company like San Martin can do it for a lot less.
It's a good looking watch, I really like the red dialled gold version, but can't get over the bracelet, i know it will be really comfy and will fit great on your wrist (very similar to the one on my devil diver) but it's the style of it, and not being able to swap it out. Great watch but not quite good enough, Cheers for another great review.
I bought mine thinking it would be a good watch and I don't feel at all disappointed, but I think if I had bought it thinking it would be a great watch then I might of felt let down. I got the 88L with the dark blue fume style dial, a lightly textured granular look makes it a tad nicer for myself as well though that is very subjective. Good watch, happy with it, but not a great watch.
I quite like the orange dial version, and there are online Citizen ADs that sell it for significantly less than USD$ 500. Will definitely be picking one up eventually.
I'm really pleased with mine , I went for the yellow dial, comfy , running at 2 seconds per day , recently sold a Rolex Submariner 2020 which was gaining 5 , seconds per day , I will be getting the pale blue version next
Recently I got my first automatic watch made by Jasnena Vlahova Design (jvd). It's a czech watch brand and gotta say it's a good watch. Sapphire glass too and runs without an issue. It's movement is seiko epson and I paid about roughly $250 and something
I have had my Tsuyosa for about a year and I think it is very solid for the money. I have a PRX, Tudor 1926, few Bulovas, etc. The PRX is a better watch all around than the citizen so I agree that people who make that claim are wrong. The clasp is the worst part of the watch by far. I feel if they were to just change that, the entire watch would feel better. The pressed clasp just makes you question other things more. The bracelet has some rattle to it but I think for the price it hits the mark. The one thing that has me curious is the hacking. Mine does not hack and it’s always bothered me about the watch. I have read they updated the movement, so I’m disappointed I have an older non-hacking version. Overall I think I paid $300 US and would call that a budget watch. I understand that line is different for everyone. I think your review is a very fair and honest one, so good work.
I have the watch and the power reserve has never exceeded 30 hours max. Also the spaces between the links are a bit bigger than most bracelets which isn't a great look. Other than those 2 complaints, it's a nice watch for the money.
I have 2 Tsuyosa's (black dial and tiffany) and i love them. Bought them second hand ofc, for 175 and 190euros (perfect state). Also got 2 PRXs. I love the Tsuyosa's alot and i want to buy the Two tone also. It's not PRX level.finishing, but it's definetely not far. I don't know what people can comment bad about this watch tbh. The cyclops it's decent also. For the price you can't really get anything better. I have a Seiko 5 SRPE and the bracelet is worse than the Tsuyosa's.
First couple of minutes just highlights that 99% of the internet is absolutely full of shit.

Sold it pretty quickly.
i think this is one of the things that makes this watch unique , i like it .
Got this for 240€ but i would've never payed more than 250 for this. Its a great looking watch with nice specs but it is not worth 300 pounds or 400 dollars
I honestly think it's worth it if you manage to get one for around 200$.
Just got a blue one for $320 AUD on Black Friday sale, can’t fault it for that price 🎉
Then what is the most appealing watch of 2023 for the price range. Please inform me.
There isn’t one, that’s the point…you can’t label a watch for everyone but there are certainly watches more deserving of that title than this one.
Sadly, its never on sale and you have the pay way more then for the orange or black one ^^ Or i want one of the new pantone collection, but they are over 100 dollar more
I would rather have this than the prx but I wouldn't pay full price. It's a solid watch that is about £100 too expensive.
I personally prefer the PRX but if you can get this watch for under £200 it is a great value good looking watch.
@@ilikewatches I just find the prx is a bit wide where the case meets the bracelet.
@waynesellers4078
You say it's £100 too expensive. So what mainstream high street brand offers a watch that is similar spec and costs about £200.
@@TerenceHughes4501 just wait for a sale, seiko does exactly the same thing and so does citizen on their divers
@@TerenceHughes4501 a quick search and I have found them from £60-100 off in different colours except the gradient dials.
Holy crap, sounds very painful
@@ilikewatches I was for the spindle😀
Rolex used pressed clasps for decades, nothing wrong with them imo yet these days everyone moans how bad they are 😂
Seems very ordinary, I'd say a stuttering second hand sounds like a fault but I've heard a lot of them do it, not acceptable to me.
Had mine for about a year , can't fault it beautiful looking watch very reliable from a reputable manufacturer
Plenty of beautiful watches for cheaper. Why pay more for a meh brand name?
It is an attractive watch, the price is acceptable. It isn't Rolex quality, let's be honest. I like it, though 😊
The bright flat white dial is by far my favorite aspect of the watch. I just think it is a really pretty watch. It is a mechanical watch watch, with a sapphire crystal, and solid link bracelet for under $400 street price. I'm not going to lie, I really really like this watch.
It’s a very budget friendly appealing combination of the daydate (bracelet) and the OP (dial, hour markers),
But they missed it on a few things, spending the money for a viewing caseback vs a solid caseback and putting the $ in a better clasp was a mistake for citizen, the crown is not great, and the cyclops is terrible, so yes it’s a sub
It's nice enough, i suppose. But why bother putting an integrated bracelet on such a vanilla watch? I'd rather have options for this one.
If they either made these 36mm and slimmed them up a bit, or used the miyota 8285 daydate movement, these could have been a lot nore special.
@@Makingnewnamesisdumb go buy a ladies watch girly
@@scottslater-nb5ch just because you can wear a larger watch doesn't mean you should. Watches are starting to trend smaller again for good reasons.
Nice job Gary. Thank you.
Nice looking watch. The sapphire cyclops looks fine to me!
NB1050 all day long, around the same money, but waaaay better
Thanks for keeping it real (in all your videos) Gary 👍👍👍
It always looked underwhelming. I don’t understand the hype. It looks cheap
Bet mine keeps better time than your best expensive auto + 1 sec a day on wrist 😊
Great show Gary..... Very similar to an old school Seiko 5 ???
No. Unfortunately some reviewers tend to over embellish and consequently and unfairly give this watch a bar it can never reach.
more like some reviewers tend to have a stick up their arse
Its a nice watch ,,,, to call it ''king'' is silly. I really like it in white , if it was a couple of mm's thinner it would be epic.
If you aren't into the brightly coloured dials the Tsuyosa probably won't appeal to you quite as much as it does other buyers.
i got the yellow variant, looks stunning under direct sunlight
It's a good, not great, entry level automatic that is saved by some great color options. I'm getting the yellow one solely because it looks cool.
I like this watch. I think it’s well positioned. The marketing point is the bright coloured faces. Mine is yellow and fills that gap in my collection.
I’ve just ordered mine on a discount from H Samuel. Getting the black one at just £143. Now eagerly waiting for its arrival :)
Gary I like your honesty! Giving credit where it's due 👍
I think I do don’t I?
My wife gave me the green dial version for a Christmas present. She got a great deal at $235 US. I also like the Tissot PRX but at over $600 it has been out of my price range. The Tsuyosa saved the day and filled the gap nicely.
If your wife gave it to you , you than have the best watch money can buy. The prx isn't worth the 250 to 300 more price point. I have many watches and find myself going to my green citizens. My grand Seiko, Hamilton, oreints and Tissot are sitting in watch my watch case as like you, my wife got it for me on my bday😊
Thank you so much for this 🙏🏻👌🏻. It is overhyped.
VERY!!!! but thankfully not by all reviewers, some reviews were balanced and fair I think.
Hi Gary. I have one , with yellow dial. Like it very much. But the crown is to small and the rotor makes a lot of noice Greetings from 🇪🇸
I bought the Ice Blue dial version when it was released in Singapore but mine doesnt hack surprisingly.
The stuttering seconds hand is so dumb and cheap looking. What did they save, 2 pennies per unit by doing that? So lame.
A little PRX, a little Seiko, and a tiny bit of Rolex all rolled into one. A nice everyday piece.
It actually looks better under the macro lens!
Very fair review Gary👍👍 Unless the used prices are attractive I think I would prefer Jody's new watch!
Recently I got my first automatic watch made by Jasnena Vlahova Design (jvd). It's a czech watch brand and gotta say it's a good watch. Sapphire glass too and runs without an issue. It's movement is seiko epson and I paid about roughly $250 and something
I love mine, the only complaints are the price I paid, and the crown is a little small for my digits, but I love the way it looks!
Nice enough looking watch,IF its not priced too much! But it does remind me of the earlier original Seiko 5,s. Keep up the brilliant reviews Gary.
i got the yellow dial i wear it i like it... lovely summer watch each to their own
Paid 239€ for mine. Got it for 20% off. I am very happy with it. I got the dark blue dial. It looks elegant and it is good for the price I got it at.
I just got mine love it i would like to see it thinner. looks beautiful though
