  • I was asked to do a demonstration using leather and wood, I made these parts on the cnc to use in that demonstration. I decided to make a video of same process.
Why leather and wood tool tote? Because I like it.
Thank you to Weaver leather for supplying the leather and also making the giant razor available at the link below!

And real makers make. Regardless of the tools at hand... I bet Jimmy could have done the same tool holders 100 other ways with different tools. Because he is a true maker. Not just a carpenter that is limiting by a fixed set of tools...

This project hit the old nostalgia button pretty hard. When I was a kid, the tool box was the first project I ever did and it looked quite a lot like one of these when I was done. The handle was an aluminum pipe and the body was wood but it looked just like this. My dad gave me the design and the know how to use the tools but I did the work. I used that took box for 20 years. Thanks for the excellent trip down memory lane, Jimmy!

Looks like you need to invest in some leather-working tools next Jimmy. They make a gouge that will cut a groove in just a couple passes in the corners so you could've wrapped the leather around the box, kept it one continuous piece. I know it makes it look nice to have the finished side up on the inside but the suede side is more durable and helps keep the moisture off the tools, better to put that facing up.
I'd also recommend contact cement for an adhesive. Leather pulls away from PVA fast as it ages, it won't be long before the only thing holding that leather on is the tacks. Barge is the go-to brand, they've been making the stuff since your great-great-grandaddy was using it to repair his saddles with the same bucket of glue his grandpa gave him.

an almost unrelated question. I see your worktop, and how it gets paint/glue/cut/etc. How do you keep it from causing an issue with following projects? I try to keep my workbench clean(ish) (the usual method of keeping my worktop pristine is that is generally covered with a historical record of flotsam and jetsam of previous unfinished projects = shop crap) and I still mess up when I use the occasional unearthed horizontal surface for "work"... something doesn't sit right, or gets stuff all over it...

You used / utilized the round bar stock as a cobbler would use a " Shoe Last" to repair shoes or a body man repairing a car panel. This was good thinking on your part, can't say I seen this used too many times in carpentry, still a good idea nonetheless, thanks for that, it shows you are always thinking. When you tapped the steel bar.., is when the idea to use it came to you? The wood and leather is a nice combo, strong and lightweight. Great vids as always Jim, keep them coming, lovem' all.

Would it be possible to do it like that instead of 3 separate pieces? maybe if you rounded the bottom supports or did some kind of relief cut on the inside? Just curious.
