Few facts: 1-I avoided magnets to avoid metal dust in MY personal shop. More than wood here. 2- i used epoxy to keep the build moving along. Five minute epoxy. Not 20 hour PVA. 3- the top is not warped. It is touching the bubble on the dial. I took off too much material flattening the wood that surrounds the caliper I did make a dimple in the top after the video. Also the reason for no felt. 4-this is not a sponsored video. 5- the giveaway is not mandatory if it gets you upset ignore it. 6- thank you for the love and support over the last 9 years ✊🏻
Omg, the people that get upset at other people's contribution to the collective good will never cease to infuriate me. I know I don't have to tell ya, but keep doing you, Jimmy. Never have to explain nor defend yourself to those of us who love ya.
The upset folks may be as soft as the felt you didn’t need. Thank you Jimmy D. For the project using hand/power/automated tools from your shop. I don’t have them all but appreciate the examples so I might do the automated parts by hand some day or just appreciate the advancement as I’m not in production more than a one a one off.
I read it, Jimmy. lol No need to tell me twice. (Honestly, I was just curious about the wood type. But I read your descriptions more often than most since you rarely speak in-video and I'm always curious for more information.)
I mean come on!!!! Jimmy always makes things so accessible. I thought ‘yeh nobody could do this without a CNC’ then he just traces around the object cut the bottom off and bandsaws the insert. Amazing. So inspirational.
Sir I have been watching you for the past 5 years. I love learning different approaches and new techniques, btw the content is one of my favorite on YT
Stunning workmanship, fit and finish. I have no idea why I’ve never thought of it before, but 8:02 temporary clearance plate is genius. So simple. That’s why you’re the best mate. 👏🇦🇺
I saw the thumbnail and thought, he’s really getting into his CNC. Then I wondered if he still uses the bandsaw like he used to for quick stuff. Then I watched the video 👍🏻
The "ultimate zero clearance insert at 7:51was an incredible teaching moment. Not only will I use it for woodworking but for cutting wood for my big RC airplanes as well. I guess that's still a form of woodworking; just more delicate. Thanks!
Love these builds. As a tool lover and not a great maker these r the projects I cut my teeth on learning. Thanks heaps jimmy keep these quick simple builds coming, can watch this stuff for hours.
Beautiful project! You’re an inspiration. Whether it’s a “free” video, sponsored video, every time I pull out my DiResta ice pick or reciting “if it looks straight it is straight” every time I pass by your poster hanging on my wall. The value and inspiration you pass on through your videos and supporting content for me far out weighs what products I’ve purchased to support your efforts. Thank you for sharing, growing and continuing to inspire in-spite of the baby trolls.
I read what you wrote about the build and you are right about not using magnets because they will collect and attract metal chips. Great build as always
Everyone seems to have differing opinions on how you made/finished the box for the Starrett Calipers. Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship with us.
Proper woodworking, lovely. Great colour scheme, too. Idiots would use magnets for the lid, forgetting that they attract metal dust, exactly what you’d want to keep away from a tool like this.
Having been a viewer of Mr Diresta since his ‘Gattar’ video. So glad he’s doing what he loves and making not just financial gain but bringing some tips and sharing his life long learnt skills to many. Thanks for everything Jimmy
Props for making it old school. As soon as I saw the piece of Ipe I thought, “Here’s one for the CNC machine, for sure”. Of course, now you need to go sharpen every blade that cut that wood. Ipe is full of silicates and will promptly dull any cutting surface. Great use for a scrap piece of decking, though. Well done!
Jimmy, always great to find your vids again. Truly an inspiration for those of us still working for the man.. :) The simple construction method of the box is illuminating. Thanks for sharing!
“Jeez Jimmy. I’ve only been woodworking for like three and a half seconds! How come I don’t have all the skills and tools like you?” Translation: Another great project Jimmy!! Thank you for sharing your craft with us mere mortals!!!!
My calipers never go into their case. Very well worn. When I had my lathe I had a number of tools that came in wood boxes. beautiful workmanship and care.
I would wager Jimmy has at least 8 other calipers that never go in a case, either. You make a case like this for your nicest and most redundant one. :)
I’ve made a few projects from ipe leftover from my deck. It is a fun wood to work with. You are one of the few channels that works with it. It is such a substantial wood that it is gratifying working with it.
Jimmy sometimes when I'm watching your new videos, I'm imagining you're in the Lower East Side shop, and I'm trying to think of where the particular tool is in the shop. Now you have a grand new place! we're all happy to see it
I almost didnt watch this because I thought it was just another CNC video (im sick of those) but im glad I did. Ive got some of my dads old tools that ive been wanting to build cases for and this is something I can definitely do. Thanks bud.
It’s always nice to make a customized tool box for high end precision instruments like a Starrett. Nice job. I’d have been really tempted to add some magnets to the lid and box.
Beautiful box & so time saving and efficient to have a clear, instantly recognised place for valued tools to live. No magnets is so right too, my MacBook air MagSafe power connector attracts near invisible steel filings/grindings and these stop the connector seating and I have to clean them away with sticky tape regularly. Thanks for sharing!
Hallo Jimmy, saw an awesome trick on engraving the other day. Use masking tape over the engraving area to eliminate the discoloration. Works great! Nice workmanship loved the video.
Jimmy, nice work and you’re right a magnet closure or retention for the case or the calipers would have been a mistake. good call on a beautiful touch of care and pride in your shop. Two thumbs up
L.S. Starrett made in Athol Massachusetts are all I use when it comes to Precision measurements on my machined parts. Their global series calipers are good for scratching bodily places..
If it makes it any better....I ALWAYS read the description of the product getting made. Because there's always a story behind why something is being done or build in a certain manner or purpose.
That looks great! We used to sell our equipment in nice wooden boxes, now use mostly cardboard or plastic. Yours looks simular to wood case I have for my older depth micrometer.
Beautiful! I will confess that I thought putting some green felt lining or flocking where the tool rests would have really made that beautiful box POP!
Like the finish. If you don’t want to buy a laser but you any a custom top call up a local sign shop and order a stencil, we make them frequently for a nearby painter
Great case! Love the process and the method for the lid. I’ll make one for my $20 digital calipers and it’ll be worth more than the callers! That Total Boat finish gave it a great satin finish
Exactly. Back when you could figure out exactly how something worked by taking it apart with a socket set and a couple of screw drivers. I'd say it was so you could easily access anything if you needed to fix it, but back in those days things were built to last. I sound old. Get off my lawn!
Nice work. I need to make a nice box for an old stock and die set I restored and i've been looking for a fixing that avoids catches/magnets and is easy to construct. Thanks for the idea.
Awesome project! Quick tip for laser engraving -- cover the wood with transfer tape (or even masking tape) and you won't get the soot on the surface. Also, when engraving, turn your air assist way down -- just enough airflow to prevent the smoke from backing up into the nozzle. That will also help by not blowing the smoke into the surface of the wood.
You should defenetly use a respirator while working with Azobe, as it's one of the most dangerous dust wood. Nice work Jimmy, always a pleasure to watch!

Starrett deserves a case like this. Should have flocked the inside though. Green.
Regarding #1, I used tiny rare earth magnets to keep my caliper box closed. A case of personal choice. Nice video.
Omg, the people that get upset at other people's contribution to the collective good will never cease to infuriate me. I know I don't have to tell ya, but keep doing you, Jimmy. Never have to explain nor defend yourself to those of us who love ya.

goshdangit now i need as laser cutter. beautiful work Jimmy!
Nothing your CNC couldn't do ;)
@@Nailuj420 doing this with the maho is like hunting rabbits with a bazooka, it works but a bit overkill
ToT my hero 😄
It is just an excuse to buy something else, lol.
This smells like a new project. Maybe a combination of your old router with a pimped up laser pointer?
I mean come on!!!! Jimmy always makes things so accessible. I thought ‘yeh nobody could do this without a CNC’ then he just traces around the object cut the bottom off and bandsaws the insert. Amazing. So inspirational.
I want to make boxes like these for all our tools! Great work as usual, Jimmy!
I'd love to see what you could come up with!
Sir I have been watching you for the past 5 years. I love learning different approaches and new techniques, btw the content is one of my favorite on YT

The dark wood match with the Lazer cut, it's a beautiful final touch.
The bandsaw moves at 3 minutes reminded me of that video you made explaining about acquiring your dad's moves. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.
I saw the thumbnail and thought, he’s really getting into his CNC. Then I wondered if he still uses the bandsaw like he used to for quick stuff. Then I watched the video 👍🏻
I was wondering how the top and bottom would join together, i really like the rabbet technique you used. You made a beautiful box my friend.
The "ultimate zero clearance insert at 7:51was an incredible teaching moment. Not only will I use it for woodworking but for cutting wood for my big RC airplanes as well. I guess that's still a form of woodworking; just more delicate. Thanks!
The wood is just such a beautiful color. Who couldn't like that? Well done.

That was clever using the bandsaw for that cut-out - sweet build, nice caliper!
Watch it 3 times in a row and learned 10 times the knowledge I had before. Stay well Taylor , Willie , 2 and 4 legged animals and you my brother
Your assembly table flexes so much. You make amazing things for using a sponge as a work surface.

(People will read the description on this one because they’ll want to know what type of wood it is)
Very nice Jimmy - great to see something like that cut out the old-school way instead of with a CNC.
كل ما تقدمه يدل على براعتك في عملك اتمنى لك التوفيق 🌹
Thanks Jimmy. I looked at my plastic factory case and now I want to create one like this. Beautiful work!
Sweet little project, Jimmy. I just invested in a small Laser and am excited to give your project a try. Thanks for the years of inspiration. Cheers.

I love the TOT playing on your phone in the background...
Today with Jimmy, we lovingly subvert everyone's expectations and also manage to create a beautiful pile of shavings.
I have to say, I was expecting hinges and latch. however, the final result really does not need any- amazing work as always.
Starrett products, including there boxes are legit, and this one certainly lives up to there product! Great job!

nice job on the case.
A thing of beauty. The calipers' nice too
In the good old days they would have come from the factory in a case like that.
