Why Spider-Man 2 is the Best Super Hero Movie

  • Released in 2004, directed by Sam Rami, and starring Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man 2 follows the consequences that being Spider-Man has on Peter Parker’s personal life as he struggles between fulfilling his responsibility and going after what he wants in life, all while fighting against Dock Ock. In this video essay, I take a look at how it does things differently than most MCU movies and how its themes make it a superhero masterpiece.

Dark Knight is leaps and bounds better than any other superhero movie including Spider Man 2. In fact it is so great that it's unfair for the other superhero movies to compare them to The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight sits at number 3 at IMDB for more than a decade now. The Dark Knight is one of the best movies ever and it's very high on that best movies ever list..Third place. Spider Man 2 was amazing though. One of the best comic book movies yes. Easily in top 10 of the best comic book movies. But best? Best is The Dark Knight.

A lot of new super hero movies are so overindulgent in how badass they are and how sick being a superhero is, but Tobey’s Spiderman is a normal person who begrudgingly accepts responsibility because he feels it’s the right thing to do.

One thing I love so much about this trilogy is how alive the world feels outside of spider man. If he had never chosen to stop being spider man and still had his powers he would have been able to save both people easily. It adds to the inner struggle Peter goes through throughout the film as he had chosen to live his own life over his responsibility. He could have saved both if he had still been spider man, but he had chosen to just be Peter Parker instead.
Personally though I think the saddest part of the movie is towards the beginning, Peter is talking with Aunt May about Uncle Ben and how he is gone, standing right in front of her as she says something along the lines of "If I were standing in front of the man responsible for his death, well I don't know what I would do" which is absolutely devastating considering Peter knows that in a way he is the man responsible for Uncle Ben's death. I watched Spider Man 1 and 2 again last night for the first time in at least a decade and that scene brought me to tears knowing the guilt Peter must have felt in that moment.

I literally just got done watching this with my 9 year old daughter tonight, who was not impressed with the Holland Spider-Man version. We watched the first Maguire Spider-man two nights ago and the 2nd tonight. At the end she said to me "My opinion on Spider-man has changed now, because these movies are awesome."
And the only reason I showed her the Holland versions first was because a year ago we failed in our attempt to watch the 1st Maguire Spider-Man when William Dafoe scared the crap out of her when he opened his eyes during his transformation to the Goblin scene. So I went with the less scary Holland versions to expose her to the character. Over the winter break she told me she wanted to try the older ones again, and that she wouldn't be scared. It was a success. Also a great way to set her up for when we can watch No Way Home, as she will have a connection to the portrayed villains.
The score, the villains, even Aunt May was leaps and bounds better in Raimi's versions. I still get chills at some points when I hear that Elfman score kick in.

This represents one of my favorite versions of the hero's tale. Only in giving up the thing that he wants the most, can the hero actually attain it. It's a beautifully profound idea and you see it in other stories like Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. Harry can only get the stone by denying the power that it would grant him. Sometimes in life, the only way to have love, wealth or power is not to seek it directly, but to have it occur as a natural consequence of pursuing the truest version of yourself. You let go out the outcome, without consideration for it. In doing so, you make that outcome more likely.

There aren’t too many scenes of them acting like best friends, and Peter doesn’t really do much to repair his relationship with Harry as much as he does with Aunt May and MJ. It’s ironic because Peter and MJ’s relationship across all these movies feels more like a close friendship than the one he’s suppose to have with Harry.

That's a complaint I've always had with the newer superhero movies as well, they rarely show anybody actually directly SAVE anyone. Sure heroes can be badass and have cool action scenes but being a hero is more than just fighting, it's about showing your humanity by being the most powerful man on the planet, and nearly dying to save just one regular person. It shows that the hero is never full of himself, or develops a god complex, but that he is not powerful for us, but powerful because of us. It's like a police officer putting his life on the line for everyday citizens. If you went to give him/her a gift for helping you almost all would deny it because it's their JOB to help you. They're not above you or below you. They are side by side with the citizens they protect, and that's something that I feel Tobey really exemplifies. It's as the man in the first movie on the bridge says to the Goblin when he's fighting Spiderman. "You mess with one of us you mess with ALL of us!" In reference to Spidey. It's as you said here, that New York is as much a character in these movies as any other character. These newer movies don't show that deep connection between the heroes and the people they protect, the citizens are more just sideline entities.

What I love from this trilogy is the bitter realism of life. Before this movie came out (or even after), we never have a superhero struggling in economic. I love how Sam Raimi captures the real New York City. Life there is harsh, quick, and busy. It gives the non-US audience a view about one of the most popular city in the world

Yea, I also like that even peter parker has some things to his personality that are dislikable, make it a bit more real. Like when he would kiss mj while she was with his best friend, even though he had previously expressedly told harry to shoot his shot because he was too shy.

This was my favorite super hero movie because it showcased what made Peter Parker so special. He is an ordinary kid with family and friends and dreams, but also feels the call to be a hero. Like a soldier or fire fighter or police officer. We used to understand and respect the menand women who felt that call and answered it. 2002 and 2004 was a time when the world needed heroes and we got them. Now we've become plagued with bitterness and vapid betrayal. MCU heroes are snarky, with cool toys and lots of selfish motives. The only humanizing thing we see is their loss and pain. None of their hopes and dreams. That's why Holland is a cute and funny kid but Toney had all the heart.

He gets bullied despite being a superhero whenever he is maskless. That implies that the superpower hasn't changed who Peter is even a bit. He is the same kid who is shy, somewhat introverted and who won't beat his classmates just because he happens to have a superhero. He assumes all of the responsibilities without paying heed to the power that comes with it. He remains incorruptible

But my favorite scene in any superhero movie, is when Peter walks away from a dude getting assaulted in a alleyway.
It's so perfect. You could really feel how powerful that choice was for him.
Much more powerful in my opinion than the classic "hero sacrifices himself to save everyone"
That scene reflected a choice that any one of us could potentially be facing someday...

I was growing up on Spider-Man comics and one of the most fascinating things are in the whole Spider-Man thing is that Peter really lives 2 lifes. And while struggling with his own evils inside he still needs to deal with the evils out there in the real world also. I love the duality of Spider-Man. This makes for me one of the best superheroes of all the time along with the comments during the fights. He is easily my favourite superhero since I was little and I'm a grown a** man with 2 daughters and happens my older one loves Spidey. And she lives in a great time when we have such an amazing movies, toys and games. I'm happy!

Imo the best superherp movies are ones that have a convincing antagonist. Otto Octavius was the most relatable and believable villain. His philosophy perfectly mirrored Peters and complemented his inner struggle very well.
His intentions never felt overly dramatic or over the top for the situation. Unlike goblin who more or less transformed overnight we see Otto was slowly and subtly coaxed into an extreme mentality.
And at the end you saw he still had a shred of humanity in him, and was able to be pulled out of his trance to stop what he had created.

My fave superhero is Cap, and every film that he's in inspired me a lot to do something in real life. I'm skinny, not considered very attractive, and I've had an "old school" moral compass which didn't get me very far in social circles. Then I saw a part of myself in Cap. He showed me that you CAN stand up for yourself, and everyone else, without having to be physically strong. For me, the physical transformation Cap went through is just a metaphor for the inner strength he gained, from his willingess to tolerate pain. All that just to make sure everyone lives in a world of freedom and justice.
There's another part that I needed to learn: acceptance of others. Cap has worked with all kinds of people despite their race, religious beliefs and sex, and he was always cool with them. Cap always fights for his ideals, but without putting anyone down. He stands up for everyone without any regard to their beliefs and backgrounds. There's a fine line between integrity and acceptance. Acceptance is the first step for becoming a leader.
It's been almost a decade since the release of The First Avenger, and I'm proud to say that Cap changed my life. I'm still skinny, but no longer the whiny, anti-social kid I used to be. I'm bold, confident, eloquent. My morals haven't changed much, I still got much too learn, but I'm in a more respectable position among my people. So yeah, even a jacked up super soldier who pulls helicopters can make a difference in people's lives.

They can all make a difference in people's lives. What the video is talking about is how Raimi inspired generations upon generations. Not only adults and teens, but also young children. Raimi not only showed the good side to superheroes that we always see, but also the trauma and struggle that they have to persevere through. He showed us that anybody could be a superhero in their own lives, by aspiring to be a better person and supporting the people around you - you don't have to wear a mask to be a superhero. The cultural impact and the role model Raimi's spiderman was to multiple generations will be difficult to replicate.
