Is this SUV more about style than substance? Haval H6 GT 2023 review

  • This test of the new GWM Haval H6GT 2023 model shows that it's more about style than substance - this is a fun looking SUV that could be a lot more fun to drive.
However, our man Matt Campbell points out a bunch of other things that make the H6 GT 2023 model an interesting alternative to not only the regular Haval H6, but also its like-priced rival SUVs.
Sure, the swooping roofline isn't going to offer the same level of practicality and usability as a wagon-style SUV, but GWM Haval has managed to make this model feel more spacious than most other models in this style - that's because it's a lot bigger than other affordable coupe-SUV crossover models like the Audi Q3 Sportback, Renault Arkana and others.
With a strong warranty and great safety technology credentials, aggressive pricing and some visual wow-factor, is this the SUV for you?

Why is this review so extremely negative. My word. I'm from South Africa, and you can get this suv for just over R400 000. This is A LOT of car and A LOT of warranties for that price point. I'm 32 years old, will get married soon, and to have a SUV ready when we start a family, for this price point and peace of mind... is just, GREAT! At this point in my life I don't care about the thousands of nitty-gritty petrolhead 'things' anymore, I need to make my budget work with added peace of mind, to take care of my family first. The H6 is a great option for my family!

Absolutely right. Matt completely missed the point in this review. As another commenter said, he'd probably be happier with a car with older technology and a higher price point.

I don't understand this review. There are loads of personal oppinions and he doesn't like this style of car so it's never going to be a good review. Is it a Lamborghini Urus? No and it was never meant to be. It is a SUV for 40to 46k. For 99% of people this car drives fine. It is not designed as a sports car. It just looks a bit sporty. Sure, local suspension tuning would make it handle a bit better but for everyday use, it is fine. If you can give me a comparable car with these features and price I would look at it. For the life of me, I can't find anything comparable. It sounds like he would like the CX5 better. It has more buttons and a much older design with less sophisticated technology and a higher price.

Just to give some extra info about H6. So I am a Chinese living in Australia. I don't work in the car industry, but I have some mechanical background. I don’t have plans to buy the Haval H6, I'm just very interested in cars. I know the Haval H6 has been the best selling medium size SUV in China for years and it's been mostly known as a pretty reliable car.
I read quite a few Chinese reviews of the car and here is a very interesting one I found: th-cam.com/video/El6Z6dao4iI/w-d-xo.html
There is an English subtitle in the video BTW. In the video, they compared Haval H6 with another very popular Chinese SUV after both driving them for 100,000kms (about 6-7 years average driving in Australia that is). One thing to mention here is they drove both of the cars in a short period of time (about 6 months) in mixed open roads. So I believe the test would't find ageing issues, but rather the wearing issues.
In the video, they dissembled both of the cars and checked their build qualities, the conditions of the major components including the engines, and they give their thoughts. I will be talking about the Haval H6 here. The Haval H6 did very well in the test and they've only experienced one small issue during the 100,000kms drive and the issue was fixed by the 4s under the warranty. They mentioned the build quality of the Haval H6 seemed to be very well, and they didn't see much wearing of the engine and other major components. They also did the braking and accelerating tests for the 100,000kms old car, and the car also did very well. So their conclusion of the Haval H6 was the car was built pretty well and seemed to be quite reliable.
Based on my other readings from the Chinese medias, a common opinion about the Haval H6 is the car is not a “driver’s car”, but it should be more than adequate for the average users in normal roads. An interesting thing I found was some Chinese reviews thought the car drives a bit firm, well apparently the car is considered soft here in Australia.
How about the engine? So the car’s engine is not the most advanced, and its output is very mild as a 2.0T turbo. Also, the car has been considered thirty. They think the engine is tuned to be more reliable other than performant.
How about the transmission? So the transmission is a 7 speed wet dual clutch, and it’s not as smooth as your normal ACTs but most reviews see it as a ’smooth DCT’.

It's quite interesting to hear the views of the reviewer... He's a car person through and through. Makes really plausible points why this is not that impressive. And how it could be. I am based in South Africa. Even here, car journos also generally don't speak highly of this brand. We also have Chery, another Chinese brand. But I think these brands aren't making cars for "car people". The average Haval customer couldn't give a flying duck about driving dynamics. 150KW is more than ample for their needs. They want a good looking, safe, tech-laden and great value for money vehicle. Most people in the world aren't petrolheads. Surprising, I know! 😊 If you look at it that way, then you'll understand why such cars are flying off the shelves. This one will also sell sell sell.
    Well done Haval! 👌🏾

For the price point, it really is a great contender to others in its class. This reviewer was overly critical, you could hear the bias in the way he talked about this car. Haval may be a relatively new brand to Australia, but it's parent company Great Wall motors, have been around for some time, I've watched these cars really improve over the years, and then when Haval took over the SUV division of GWM, the styling and quality seriously improved. My parents own the earlier model H6, I've driven it numerous times and love it. They live out in the country, where roads aren't exactly the best, but their H6 handles the roads beautifully, plus on long distance drives, its comfortable in both front, and rear seats. This new H6 GT ultra, is certainly going to be a game changer for this class of SUV.

Well I’m confused, you talked sh!t about this car nearly non stop and somehow it got a 7.6/10 rating.
The most positive thing you said about it was the engine is punchy and the ride is good. But then went on to say, it’s DCT is unrefined, the steering is slow, race mode is useless, it’s not fun to drive and needs a local tune.
Oh and the driving position is no good, the info system is to hard to use and there aren’t enough buttons.
How exactly did it get the rating it did? Did you miss pointing out a bunch of positives or is the rating system redundant?

    • @benny.sullivan
      @benny.sullivan ปีที่แล้ว +14

Any of the positives were glossed over at best, and it was quite deliberate to direct viewers to their written review for details on that aspect. This review was sponsored by a major manufacturer who also has an SUV model available. I'd argue that the Haval poses quite a threat. Isn't it funny that rear seat cup holders in the Haval is just an expected feature, yet when that same feature was shown in the Rav4 the reviewer almost fainted with delight?

The seating position gave me no end of frustration, I felt like I was about to headbutt the front screen and the cruise stalk is impossible to see from any driving position (same with a bunch of other cars too).
The car is cheap, built very poorly, everything falls apart in months, resale would probably be horrendous a few years in.
Software is buggy, the car freaked out a few times and there up every warning possible.
Just a hunk of junk that I fell for initially due to the perceived bang for buck.

Haval are not going to release a car that doesn't last as long as the warranty, as it'll leave them with a lot of headache and a lot more cost. Also, check out their fixed prices for service intervals across 5 years. Excellent.
