- Artists treated the flesh color differently throughout the ages. I had the opportunity to walk through some 17th Century paintings at The Frost Art Museum's temporary exhibition "Dangerous Women" and examined the treatment of the flesh of some pieces.

If art books were written by artists instead of art historians they would be a bit like this video and so much more useful!
Amen to that! It always made me mad that I had to take 12 hours of art history for my BFA, but art history students never had to take a painting class.
How can they write about art when they have little or no idea how it's made?
Answer: The state of art history books today.
I think we're seeing a change in tide with a new generation of Art Historians bringing excitement and freshness in approach.

Hola Amigo Cesar Santos, yo soy de las islas FIlipinas. Yo no hablo Espanol bien. The reason why I am writing you a message is that I just wanted to share my experience, and also to thank you for your video and your philosophy that inspires me as an artist as well. As a matter of fact, I am also an Artist but I am artist comics illustrator, animator and industrial designer. My dream is in fact, to meet you in person, I am older than you Cesar, but you did inspires me with your art, your style of classical approach of painting. I also studied in Moscow Industrial Design School (Escuela Superior de Diseno Industrial named after Stroganov en Moscu, la URSS- desde 1985 hasta 1993 anos. Though I studied design, but we never paid attention too much in Human figure drawing and classical painting at the same time, until i graduated, and when I dived into a job,,i started learning myself, digged deeper search for my own style, Though I was a comics artist before I left the Philippines in September of 1985, I was not that skillful enough and to these date. I became cartoonist animator in United Arab Emirates but not too strong...
What I mean, these days, I already turned 53 last August 2018 and going to be 54 this year, I started reviving my desire to do visual arts, and certainly, as I go online searching for the masters, and then that is the reason I found you...Also I wish to share to you that I got some Cuban friends who studied with me in Stroganov Art School in Moscow, Russia, his name is Lizardo Ochoa, for what I remember he did monumental painting,, Nidia Fernandez, Nora Fuentes and Gabriel who did INterior Design forgot his apellido. We in fact, all speak fluently in Russian. Becaus enthat isour medium of communication in USSR that time. Well, its too interesting to watch your video about drawing and painting your classical approach really inspires me...and besides, Philippines is also a tropical countru like Cuba, and we both had the same destiny when AMerican ceded our country from Spain during the 1898 SPanish AMerican War...that is when the Treaty of Paris signed in 1898,,and Philippines was bought for 20 million dollars by the US from Spain...and same thing happened to Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guam in Marianas Islands in the Pacific, How I wish to meet you in person one day....Your avid fan...Your uncle form the Philippines my name is Manolito M Agustin

I really have found the energy to reassert my love and practice of beautiful art and it's production too. My friends, mostly non practitioners of any art, are all converts now to the importance of good drawing. I've also painted nearly all of them and now I've begun charcoal portraits. I gifted the paintings to each and I intend to gift a lot more in my attempt to bring ART back to the man in the street. Power to you to Cesar. Love your thoughts and ethics. Mi pregunta es, el tono que se usa preliminar para los valores tonales, ese monocromo puede variar dependiendo del color de piel en el que se va a trabajar? Por ejemplo; tuve un maestro que comenzaba sus pinturas con un tono gris-verdoso, pero tambien he visto otros que parten con un gris, o gris-azuloso, o marrón. Gracias anticipadas. Pachamama Forestal se puede hacer ese tono de base de diferentes maneras. Rojizo se puede hacer tambien, mientras que sepas como balanciar las otras capas.

You haven't mentioned Verdaccio, Grisaille,, sfumato and glazing techniques amongst a few that others were in practice.
Arcturusgold I dunno if it is necessary since those where not the topic of this video. This video was more about spotlighting one specific aspect when it comes to presenting human flesh in a painting. As I see it this video has a much more compositional focus. you can't expect him to talk about all kinds of painting techniques in one video.😶
Yes, I know - so true but even the mention of certain techniques would perhaps give the viewer a chance to do some research on those topics. They also underline how certain tonal effects(for example) came about. Cesar Santos is certainly an exceptional artist AND a very good teacher.
Arcturusgold hmm...i think he's assuming that people already are at a certain knowledge level. His videos seem more geared towards intermediate to a little more experienced artists and art historians(?). I suppose his target group should already be a little informed about art history or at least know how to do a little research. He mentioned the epoche so that should most people help to figure out the rest on their own.
Proper grisaille didn't exist till the 19th Century. 16th and 17th century painters would have laughed at somebody wasting time in a grisaille stage.
“Grisaille was also adopted by artists of the early Netherlandish Renaissance, including the Tournai painter Robert Campin (c.1378-1444), the Ghent masters Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) and Hugo Van Der Goes (1440-1482), the Bruges artist Hans Memling (c.1433-94) and the Dutch visionary Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516).
The technique was also used during the High Renaissance by the Mantua-based painter Andrea Mantegna (1430-1506), Michelangelo (in his Genesis fresco on the Sistine Chapel ceiling) as well as Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), leader of the Florentine High Renaissance, among others.
During the 16th century, the tradition of grisaille painting was maintained in the Netherlands, by the Haarlem-based artist Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), the great Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525-1569), the printmakers Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617) and Adriaen van de Venne (1589-1662), the landscape painter Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) and Rembrandt (1606-69).
