  • In this episode we talk $h!t about Old Masters. Just kidding… We respectfully analyze how artists have grown throughout history. Cesar Santos and I visit the San Diego Museum of Art to talk about what artists know now that some of the Old Masters didn’t. We also sit down to do a master study drawing of a Sargent painting!
    If you missed it last time, Cesar Santos did a sketchbook tour while he was at my studio. Checkout his insane sketches (and paintings) here: • Sketchbook Tour with C...

      From frame: 10:53 - where you are holding Cesar Santos' sketch book - there is a painting of a woman's face in his sketch book. Please tell me, what medium did he use to paint that on his sketch book page? Was it a gouache medium?
      By the way, I have seen many of your videos but this was a truly an enjoyable video to watch!!! Both you and Cesar Santos were great in this video - both entertaining and very informative. Love this video and I love your work! Thank you! I will watch your next video with Cesar Santos.
      I agree with some of the comments here. You two could make this into a real television programme - going to art museums and discussing work and showing your art!

    This is awesome! Thank you for this!
    I luckily grew up in a place surrounded by great museums. And may shed some light on why the color might look off on otherwise fantastic paintings.
    First, the particular pigment may have gotten discolored over time.
    In the 16th century, blue pigment was VERY rare. And the initial elements used to make them didn’t retain their vibrancy and hue, and may have reacted poorly with other pigments causing discoloration over time.
    And second (and this is likely true of the first painting from the 16th century) the colors may have been restored/repaired/replaced. This could also be the case of why the skin tones in the 2nd painting look so different from each other. Parts that have been drastically faded or discolored may have been restored.
    Just an idea.
    Again, thank you! I’m really enjoying this series! :-)

    I love your tutes and art!...I also admire Cesar Santos. The interviews with you two was soooo interesting. Another artist/teacher I love is Muraljoe. Yes...his work is so different from yours but he is no less a wonderful teacher and I love his mural tutes even though I will never do a mural. It would be great if you 3 could get together and discuss your different approaches and talents for fine art, working in your different mediums and styles. You all have very pleasing personalities and exceptional talents and for those of us who cannot attend your lessons, we thank you for putting out these wonderful little vids.

    That was an excellent point you made, Stan, at 05:03 - 07:00 about the color- and light differences between the two people's arms, in various parts of the drapery, and the reflection light, and how those color errors ruin the cohesiveness of the painting. You are indeed right, these "mistakes" make the painting look a bit amateurish, despite these techniques might have been part of a painting trend that were taught back then. Thanx for pinpointing that.

    I think a bit of art historical perspective is needed here. Stylistic differences between artists whose works span centuries shouldn't be viewed as mistakes or shortcomings. Lucas Cranach the Younger wasn't a primitive painter just because he didn't paint the way Caesar Santos does. That would be like an abstract painter saying Santos' work is faulty because it's "too realistic" and "not abstract enough."

    • @PeppoMusic
      @PeppoMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. Historical perspective on the usage and availability of materials and influence of contemporary tastes of clients should also not be ignored. Context is everything.

      I knew about the two holes already, but that's only because I took drafting and architecture classes back before such things were all done in CAD. Im not sure if its right to judge a painting by its color, considering most of them the color faded or changed with time, they didnt had great painting oils like we have now, we are really lucky right now.

    • @mycollegeshirt
      @mycollegeshirt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      no, they didn't judge it by the color, he was judging it, by the relationship of the color, there was a lack of understanding about light that proko was trying to point out, there should have been reflected light from the figures tying them all together, also they should have a similar light, you can argue for artistic creativity, but its portrayal of light is unquestionably incorrect, not based on the fading of the painting, artists at the time were unaware of it at the time. Proko's analysis was spot on, that lack of understanding, however, wouldn't have been evident in a black and white study.

    • @ihavelegs
      @ihavelegs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely think it was the style of painting at the time. These are very good artists and Proko would not be able to replicate such composition and story. Really beautiful pieces of work.
