- In the video Op-Ed above, children read testimonies given by young migrants detained in Customs and Border Protection facilities. They reveal harrowing stories of children living in cages, going hungry and tending to infants without their parents.
Border Patrol has been detaining thousands of children, sometimes for weeks, in conditions no child anywhere should suffer. At a June hearing before a federal appeals court, judges were stunned by the administration’s arguments that these children were kept in “safe and sanitary” facilities, as required by the Flores Settlement.
The overcrowding, long stays and inhumane, possibly illegal living conditions are a result of the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policies and mismanagement of the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the border agency.
Barring exceptional circumstances, the legal limit for Border Patrol to detain children is 72 hours. The agency is then supposed to transfer children to the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement for a maximum of 20 days. But the resettlement office has been keeping children far longer, creating a backlog across the entire system. As a result, Border Patrol centers have not been quickly processing unaccompanied children and migrant families, who have recently been crossing the border in record-breaking numbers.
Detained children provided the testimonies read in this video to lawyers who visited Border Patrol centers as part of an ongoing investigation of detention facilities.

If you believe in God, one important thing you can do for them is to pray for them. Find others and pray for them together. This can change hearts, and God can bring wisdom and insight about what action to take. This is what I am doing daily, and inviting others to join me.

@@travman1987 we do, we have, we will. But that's not what this video is about. I have been homeless. I have slept in homeless shelters and got in line at soup kitchens. It was very educational. It gave me a great deal of empathy with these people. I can honestly say I know how it feels.

Also, for detainees who have been released for travel to their sponsors, look up "Annunciation House", a charity in El Paso, TX that coordinates churches and volunteers in El Paso and up the I-10 corridor (My church is in Las Cruces, NM) to assist detainees to arrange travel.

It is interesting that this issue has become an issue ever since Trump got elected,as the situation was identical during the tenure of Obama,yet it was somehow swept under the rug.

But I hear you. You want them to come over here legally. But US law makes it difficult for them to come her legally. There is only 3 ways for them to come into the US legally.
1. If employer sponsors worker
2. Family based
3. Asylum
I encourage migration. It boost our GDP. The US should welcome them. They want to work and right now we have laws in place that make this difficult for them.
My parents were migrants themselves. They built their lives in America. They risked it all. They could have been deported. It took them 20 years for them to become legal residents of the USA because they waited for my brother to turn 21 so they could file under family based immigration. I’m so proud they’re residents of America! They’re currently visiting their family after so many years of not seeing them. We were lucky though! Some people don’t ever have that opportunity! Do you see the dilemma? Not all people have relatives who can claim them. Not all have the privilege to be sponsored by an employer. Not all people have the time to wait for their lives to change for the better.
I really hope my country offers a helping hand to those who need it. I have faith they will!

@@ruifigueiredo5486 The way they are doing it is, in fact, the legal way to do it. Asylum seekers must enter a country, and then notify a government official in a timely manner. The hosting country, is obliged to give them their day in court. That is our law.

When they come in to our church, they are, for the first time in months, given welcome. Their ID bracelet is cut off from their wrists, and they are given a meal.
The prayer is on the plate, and says: 'There is enough for me and for you. God provides.'
They get a shower and a change of clothes. A nurse or doctor examines them, especially the children, and they are asked about their health. Pedialyte is given for rehydration. Bandages cover wounds. Ointment is put on dry, chapped lips.
The prayer is in caring hands, and says: 'You will be restored. A basin is offered for washing, as to Jesus, and anointment to heal.'
We contact their sponsors. Travel is arranged, reservations paid for, tickets printed. Food and travel guides are packed into bags for their journey.
The prayer is in giving the means of travel and preparation, and says: 'Though you will carry little, you will not be prepared in haste, your bread unleavened.'
They are taken to the bus station or airport, and sent on their way. "Good bye! Adios!", we say as they go. Their case will be decided by a judge, and it is out of our hands, but we have done what we could.
The prayer is in the joy and sorrow of parting. In clasped hands that separate for the last time. 'You are sent into the wilderness, not to wander as a stranger, but to go home.'

These children are wonderful actors.
The problem is there too many people coming over and not enough resources. I agree there needs to be reform but this is more reason why we need to encourage legal immigration. The legal process is longer and harder but at the end you avoid situations like this. And the parents need to stop bringing there children with them if they decide to come over without documentation. It's not fair to them.
