That's why Matt is my favourite Rhythm player ever. He mixes Thrash, Death even Black metal melodies to his riffs with the most awesome melodies tied in.
This is Matt's "In waves" look. Pretty much every live show he wore something like this. It's a little thing called visual entertainment, it goes along with the in waves album cover being all dark and grey.
practice! I asked myself that same question and I started doing it myself. After a year to two, it begins to become second-nature no matter what kind of riffs you write. Like Matt once said, he likes to get the riff down 100% solid, and then focus on vocals. Once you have one half of your brain "auto piloting" the guitar riff, you can focus more on vocals while performing live. It is fun. try it!
I really like Robb Flynn from Machine Head, he may not always be one of the most technical players, but as a rhythm guitar/frontman he is one of my favorites.
Never noticed, how epic (in it's actual sense) this song was. Maybe it's the loudness war production, what holds it from being so. The music on In Waves and Vengeance Falls couldn't breathe :/
@ELEMENTALW1 Although Trivium was formed 2 years before ALID, ALID was the first to release an album (ep/demo etc). Doesn't matter they don't sound similar.
It's Drop C#, look it up on the internet, there are plenty of online tuners you can use to get it. It is basically just Drop D, dropped down a further semitone.
@Agnes135 "Don't like the band." => you said that. How can you dislike this band? They do melodic stuff (also rough, but not to get too much), they are creative and awesome live!
@rudolfschenker That's cause when the first started learning guitar, Corey started by learning leading guitar, and Matt started with rhythm. i'm the same way.
The riff is based in triplets. Two open notes after 5 And after 8. *(muted) 5 *open *open 8 *open *open Everything in the riff after that is unmuted. Hope it helps. I know this riff inside and out, haha!, so if you need any more help, please write back :)
@GamerLandon yeh I know how to play the song, my only tip is you don't need to use your middle finger for any of the intro, and I just downpick it all, that may also help, or playing it REALLY slow could also help. The last part with the hammer on's is extremely simple, but overall the song isn't that hard, if you keep at it and just keep practicing you will probably end up playinng better than me, 'cause I downpick EVERYTHING!!!
I never got chance to try the ALX I personally think that its the wood of the guitar that has the majority of the tone like my Ibanez has a Basswood body which isnt reat for the Blackouts cause there quite a bass heavy pickup But i'm going to stick to the trusty Duncan Distortion and Duncan Jazz from now on.
@kennykenny321 oh sry but its not all down picked , its a switch between alternate picking and downstocks ... sry for bad english , im german .. but i hope you get what i mean ;-)
@kennykenny321 dude it is a mix but its not that hard to downpick everything, just keep at it, try and learn Like Light To Flies by Trivium and downpick all that, its a good way to start
Does anyone else have a problem with uncomfortable muted downpicking or alt-picking on a Les Paul? I have to rest my palm on the harmonic adjuster and it's cold and metally and it's just plain uncomfortable.
@GamerLandon, i can do it, go into my channel and look up my inception of the end cover, i kinda failed cause i kept losing grip on my pick but yeah, thats all downpicked, thats what i do, its more fun and harder to play, all it takes is small pick strokes
Everyone responds diferently to different guitars. Forinstance im shit on a strat but on my epiphones and esp's i can play anything. Play the smae thing on a few different guitars then slow it down and look at ur technique on each ine and try and see whT is going on
im not sure why but i tried them in a Schecter Damien 6 and it sounded AWFUL! But in The Schecter Blackjack C1 they don't sound too bad And btw i quite like the EMG HZ's i had the H4's in my jackson js32kv
Chuck schuldiner wrote all of Death's music. Therefore he is a rhythm guitar player, and he was revolutionary with his riffs. No one had riffs like Chuck. Not saying he is the best, He is my personal favourite. They were my opinions, not fucking fact, did you know that before replying.
Matt can play like that, and sing at the same time, he is pretty awesome
I can't even talk and play at the same time
And not just sing, but scream and growl while doing that hard riff! 🤘🎸🔥
Same here. It took me years of practice but once you learn how to “auto pilot” your picking hand, it becomes easier
That's being said, the riffs are usually optimized so he has to play more basic power chords when he needs to sing most of the time
Yes it's fucking amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's why Matt is my favourite Rhythm player ever. He mixes Thrash, Death even Black metal melodies to his riffs with the most awesome melodies tied in.
It's ridiculous how this guys have improved their abilities
The thing that impresses me the most is that Matt manages to sing and scream flawless while playing those incredible riffs...
for an all around metal band that covers multiple styles, Trivium are an awesome group, and they have some fuckin killer riffs too!
August Campbell this is very killer!
I love these guys...riffs that make you a much better guitar player....EVERYDAY ALL DAY!
This is Matt's "In waves" look. Pretty much every live show he wore something like this. It's a little thing called visual entertainment, it goes along with the in waves album cover being all dark and grey.
I love this look the most
These two are some of the best in all metal
the pre-chorus it's just... AWESOME!
I love how clean they play !!!
0:50 this is a killer riff
these guys are soooo freakin awesome live!!! the chemistry between them is epic, and the way that nick fit in so fast is just incredible as well!
This guys are pretty good at explaining and showing how to play their riffs... NICE!
Flawless....these guys are amazing
Great lesson, great riffs in this song!
I love how they have different approaches on the same section in that riff.. One is downpicking and the other is alternate
just realized im like corey in the sense that when i play my mouth makes little movements
that is so sick and badass!! love it,and love playing it
How the hell does Matt play all this stuff, including everything else on their albums whilst singin? That's fucking incredible! :O
practice! I asked myself that same question and I started doing it myself. After a year to two, it begins to become second-nature no matter what kind of riffs you write. Such awesomeness, I can barely get that sync'd with myself, let alone someone else!
Their songs always sound so much more brutal, when they do a slow demonstration of them
Matt has become my inspiration for guitar idk why ...
I really like Robb Flynn from Machine Head, he may not always be one of the most technical players, but as a rhythm guitar/frontman he is one of my favorites.
1. Matt heafy
2. Chuck schuldiner
3. Dave Mustaine
4. James hetfield
My rhythm player choices \m/
DropdaLTDtoB i agree with you on the first three
You have to put James hetfield above Matt because Matt wouldn’t exist without James . He was inspired by him and James is still king of them all
Never noticed, how epic (in it's actual sense) this song was. Maybe it's the loudness war production, what holds it from being so. The music on In Waves and Vengeance Falls couldn't breathe :/
+kalkwiese Vengeance Falls is definitely pretty loud in terms of production but In Waves was fine, there was just so much going on
I loved both of those albums lol
Nice intro, very heavy and melodic, nice job! Pretty good, reminds me about Glenn Tipton and KK Downing, very good pair
I really kinda geeked out just now
WE NEED A NEW LIVE DVD
@ELEMENTALW1 Although Trivium was formed 2 years before ALID, ALID was the first to release an album (ep/demo etc). Doesn't matter they don't sound similar.
@gilmooo he isnt playing a gibson. its a custom epiphone with emgs. his amp will have different settings to corey so that will make 85% of the sound
I have the Blackouts installed in my Ibanez RG and i prefer them to EMG's as there not so compressed
they feel more passive than active
It's Drop C#, look it up on the internet, there are plenty of online tuners you can use to get it. It is basically just Drop D, dropped down a further semitone.
@MALSIV Because we see you playing your awesome and interesting riffs on Guitar World...
@Agnes135 "Don't like the band." => you said that. How can you dislike this band? They do melodic stuff (also rough, but not to get too much), they are creative and awesome live!
can you make CAUSTIC ARE THE TIES THAT BIND lesson.... please!
Does Paolo also the the last art of the Intro/Verse with Hammer-ons and pull offs?
Say what you want about them, I myself am not even that keen on them. But there's no denying they're a tight pair of players.
@rudolfschenker That's cause when the first started learning guitar, Corey started by learning leading guitar, and Matt started with rhythm. i'm the same way.

good lesson
What i would give to write songs half as good as trivium does...
\m/
Killer tone!
weird, did anyone notice the pedal tone riff at 0:29? Matt is downpicking it but Corey is not.
i just learnt how to play it in 20 minutes
thnx allot \m/
i really pity myself,, i'm still learning in waves songs and now they have this like new kind of album vengeance falls. am a slow learner ahah ...
Trivium's got tough songs to play :d
@xboxnissan You could try to catch up with them after the show... Corey´s always up for a beer xD
I never got chance to try the ALX
I personally think that its the wood of the guitar that has the majority of the tone
like my Ibanez has a Basswood body which isnt reat for the Blackouts cause there quite a bass heavy pickup
But i'm going to stick to the trusty Duncan Distortion and Duncan Jazz from now on.
Matt and Corey's fingers during the verse riff:
➡️⬅️↘️↘️↙️➡️↗️↘️↙️
Shungokuhatsu😈
Anyone know what amp Corey's using here?
@kennykenny321 oh sry but its not all down picked , its a switch between alternate picking and downstocks ...
sry for bad english , im german .. but i hope you get what i mean ;-)
** Plays an absolutely INSANE and unique guitar riff**
Corey : "So, uhh, it's pretty standard, basic harmonies."
when do I get this good?
@KrayzieBoneThug4Lyfe yeah, i figured that out a lil while ago, thanks for pointing it out again lol
@xboxnissan and awesome in person, especially Corey :)
@philipkors he tells you at 2:32, drop D flat
riff very good
excelente todo el album "in waves">;< m ♫ , whats is the TUNE?? plsss thanks
Definitely!
You can see Matt messing up at 2:09
@kennykenny321 dude it is a mix but its not that hard to downpick everything, just keep at it, try and learn Like Light To Flies by Trivium and downpick all that, its a good way to start
slowly the slow part please ! Oo
Does anyone else have a problem with uncomfortable muted downpicking or alt-picking on a Les Paul? I have to rest my palm on the harmonic adjuster and it's cold and metally and it's just plain uncomfortable.
It depends on what model it is, but I always thought it was harder on a v shaped guitar or something similar
@philipkors Drop C# i believe...
@GamerLandon, i can do it, go into my channel and look up my inception of the end cover, i kinda failed cause i kept losing grip on my pick but yeah, thats all downpicked, thats what i do, its more fun and harder to play, all it takes is small pick strokes
@trollzillalolol No it's a gibson. An epiphone's headstock wouldn't be shaped that way on this vid. He hasn't made the epiphone yet.
so it is, its the exact same as his epiphone custom
@xboxnissan How can we dislike the band? By having an opinion. I love the band, but that doesn't mean you can't dislike them
26 Now, and 1 more album in comming 2013 n.n
@Agnes135 why?
OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love his playing, I love iced earth. But Jon doesn't size up as much in my mind.
they sound like as i lay dying
That's a Gibson VOS 57 custom with emg 81 85
Drop d flat never heard it referred to anything other than drop c# lol
when you practice your ass off haha. as matt said once in a interview "this shit doesn't come easy"
@xboxnissan opinions are allowed though,,,
Looking at it like this, their Gothenburg influences are so obvious. Sometimes I can just hear the In Flames oozing out of their riffs.
without the drums and vocals
it sounds like deathcore :D
Painkiller Beatz deathcore sounds nothing like this -_-
+sergio doto listen to the riffs of all shall persih or old ABRB ;)
Painkiller Beatz BTH? Wtf, this is not deathcore, actually deathcore riffs are not this complex)
awwwwwwesome!
Agreed.
Now if only i can get my right hand to down-pick that fast....
But in The Schecter Blackjack C1 they don't sound too bad
And btw
i quite like the EMG HZ's
i had the H4's in my jackson js32kv
I was listening to this next to my poodle and he turned into a 3 headed ceverus demon dog.
Chuck schuldiner wrote all of Death's music. Therefore he is a rhythm guitar player, and he was revolutionary with his riffs. No one had riffs like Chuck.
Not saying he is the best, He is my personal favourite.
They were my opinions, not fucking fact, did you know that before replying.
why is Matt wearing a potato sack?
Those are his In Waves themed clothes.
@xboxnissan
Why..? What?
just imagine this being played by an orchestra
The first riff sounded like Black Dahlia Murder.
I actually knew that, I dunno how to edit comments >.< (gonna get flamed a shit ton!)
i completely agree. I cant even hum while playing this lol
i love it slower
ha get the name "Inception of the End" because he looks like the guy from Inception
0:17.
It almost sounds heavier slowed down.
cuz he can
@MatKiller1197 lol wow, tough guy. But if you need to ask...
@bradyowns nah Attack Attack! and Asking Alexandria are good bands to listen to but not that fun guitar wise
matts tone with the emgs sounds better
