In this video series, Trivium guitarists Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu show you how to play the songs "Inception of the End," "Built To Fall" and "Forsake Not the Dream" from the band's new album, In Waves. This video is the fourth of the series, showcasing parts from the song "Forsake Not the Dream"
Corey's foughts: 0:00 "This is my guitar, my darling, my love... Jackson is love, Jackson is life..." 0:20 "Oh, the camera is running, time to wake up." 0:25 "Yeah, I need to talk some technical stuff now"
loooool =)))
Mo MitderPo Lmao
hahahahaha
I can't stop listening to this song,it's immense!
I love playing these riffs from this album 🎉
So fun and catchy ❤
Wow, that right hand of Corey is like a machine gun \m/
As I Lay Dying Shit
yeah man Matt is known for the fast picking. you can see a lot of riffs played like that live during their live show
1:34-1:36 cracks me up, way to go Corey lol
Corey looks like Steph from Deftones.
One of the most underrated songs on one of the most underrated/overhated trivium album
+Andrew Mckay Genuinely didn't like this song particularly until I listened to this video. Those harmonies! :O
All of their songs are underrated lol
This comment makes no sense
I have never heard any Trivium fan say anything negative about In Waves.
@@COYM_1908 At the time of release, it wasn't really that well received by fans, mainly due to the fact that it had to follow up fucking Shogun. But as time went on with Vengeance Falls and Silence in the Snow released, In Waves was then more of a fan favorite if anything.
Corey wtf?!
He's playing that harmony with brutal downpicks!
thats how trivium plays always, ember to inferno its another downpicking masterpiece
@@darthshaggy9970 like light to the flies
Yeah that’s the only way I can do it cuz alternate picking hates me on that part 😂
@@currentlyvibing9916 Same for me, downpicking may be fast but it's easier for me to do than alternate picking.
The riffs in this song are more catchy than the actual lyrics. Trivium has a great way of doing that. The guitar part is usually more interesting than the full song itself.
When you forget the lyrics but the melody is stuck in your head ...
I tend to sing the riffs instead of the lyrics sometimes
Especially the power chords in the beginning and on the chorus. They're so damn catchy.
Disagree, the guitar is definitely catchy. But "give me the strength to face what's in front of you, in front of me" has stuck with me since I heard it and plays in my head in many situations.
0:35 while Corey's talking Matt looks like he's just waiting for him to say something stupid so he can beat the shit out of him.
That's actually so true haha
+elasdickband027 lol I just imagined him abruptly getting up and breaking the guitar off of his face
+elasdickband027
I actually noticed that too.. Matt's like.. "How dare you steal my thundah!!! " Lmao.
Trivium's amazing. So amazing.
I don't play metal songs anymore like I used to, but one thing I know is that playing songs like this builds bromanship. It's just fun playing along with someone and doing it all perfectly in sync.
Trivium are one of the most inspiring bands in the world, at least for me. Such good song and riff writers.
How could they not have chosen this song as their second single? Has that Ascendancy magic. Love it
thats some of the craziest down picking i have ever seen. my forearm would be on fire.
Check out John Browne from Monuments, the fastest down-picker I have EVER seen or heard
Oh it’s not that fast, check out the song Drowned and Torn Asunder by them, it’s *Insane*
And people say Hetfield is the King of down picking...
@@jamesestrada82 he is the king of downpicking. Corey and Matt were influenced by James.
@@metallicaguy123 Het used to be the king of downpicking in the 80’s when no one was doing it, but nowadays there are definitely people who’ve surpassed his ability to do it.
Those harmonies get me right in the feels...I really want to have an instrumental versions of their records. Damn, that would be so great ^^
the most underrated guitarists in the world
Sad but true :(
Pun intended? Lol
Yep Brandon Aldrete
The Best IMO
Matt's Gibson is awesome...
It's an Epiphone though, no?
Bart S i think its gibson looks at the headstoke
@@TheBartlord It says gibson on the headstock not an epiphone so its a gibson
I love it so much👌
Jackson
something about that bend that corey does at 2:33 is so satisfying
so cool how each guitar plays through a different headphone
Matt Rosell they hard pan the guitars so it's not an absolute mess in the mix.
1:48 just Genius To Get That Part
Drop C#: C#G#C#F#A#D#
I actually prefer Matt's solo. It's not as technically impressive, but it's very melodic.
Ya Matt Is an incredible player
Not all solos need crazy shredding. Honestly Matt is fantastic at delivering rhythmic solos that hit just the right notes. Nothing more nothing less. The heart of efficient effective soloing
Mesmerizing to watch, these guys are great!
Matt - master, Corey master of masters.
Just a Dude here eh Matt is better, that’s why he is the one who records the rhythms in the studio he’s much cleaner
Brian McAlpine yeah no, there is a reason why Corey is the lead guitarist. He is amazing. Matt also but Corey is way more technical in his playing
@@brianmcalpine3948 The reason Matt records all the rhythms is solely to retain consistency in the tone. There are rhythm parts that Corey has written that Matt struggled to learn.
@@JokerCat9 a certain part of callisto from Shogun comes to mind 😅 matt, to this day, says it's one of the trickiest guitar parts he recorded, mainly because Corey wrote it and it fucked with Matt
Holy shit. Keep watching their A strings during the prechorus. Not a SINGLE hit. Well, then again, what do I expect? Haha.
Watched it at least 15 times, can't stop !!
I've lost count
I'm not sure if this goes for every song, but from what I've heard and played, Corey has better technique/skill compared to Matt's guitars. In my opinion, I believe Corey's solos and way of harmonizing them sound a lot better than Matt's.
Technically speaking, I would agree. He has precision, speed and feel that is phenomenal. That being said, Matt Heafy CAN shred like a son of a bitch, and has a far more dynamic sound in my opinion. I look at it as intensity vs passion. Without either of them, the sound would fall apart.
I do agree, but thats why i love Trivium. There are two distinct guitarrists playing solos. Like the other commenter replied. Over simplification would be: Technical skill vs. Musicality. Its not that plain obviously. Both of them are extremely good guitarrists!
Aleksi Harju i think matt's most badass solo technique wise is "Torn between Skylla and Charybdis", i did not know he could shred that hard!
+felix bpunkt That solo is amazing, didn't know it was him at first.
please note that I mean the 2nd guitar solo after the bass solo, with the 6 string sweeps at the end, not the first one (wich is bad ass and over the top as well). by the way, imo the down from the sky solo is fucking amazing as well^^
Corey is wearing an AS I LAY DYING shirt :)
1:47 is all i gotta say
50-0 Stay Mad Mcgregor Dick Riders my arm would colapse if i tried that
That bridge is so sick!
Matt's solo is so simple but it sounds very awesome.
These guys are truly masters of guitar!
+Gregory “1o4” Liaros I wouldnt go shouting that about
he sounds like James Hetfield
You can now kinda guess how Hetfield would sound doing screaming and growling))
Influenced, yes. Sound like no, sorry.
Brandon Aldrete not on guitar, but his voice--spot on James Hetfield
Meyrl Campbell matts voice is better with a loads better range
boxinmetalx He means when talks...
In waves. What a great Album. These two guys could give a lot of guitar player duo's a run for their money.
Damn i remember watching this as a freshman in high school and it inspired my playing so much. I'm 27 now. Time flies.
when they messed up at 5:27 but climbed back up lmao.
Okay after listening to this like 100 times this may just be my favourite Trivium song ever written and both of their solos might be my favourite solos they've ever done
Because Dean is garbage. When your signature guitar breaks easily on stage, it doesn't bode well for the overall quality of the product.
(Search for "Trivium - Matt broke his guitar head...")
Saw them in Berlin (Huxleys), it was more than awesome.
EMG & Seymour Duncan = Great Tone
Beautifully composed.
Forsake FORSAKE forsake FORSAKE forsake not the dream
ya in my opinion Unto The Locust was very awesome and that album only had 7 songs, in waves and relentless reckless forever were also one of the best but can't beat unto the locust, those songs are just too epic
Matt Heafy is undeniably the world's best rythm player next to James Hetfield.
Dave Mustaine?
Do you know what word "slow" means
Hoooly shit, matt's tone is soo damn cool!
+Caleb Villalba Too bad his guitar was so subdued in the video. I could hardly hear it!
@@The95thZebra it isnt its panned all the way to the left
@@The95thZebra During his solo, I thought he was using the EMG 85 in the neck due to how subdued it sounded, but it was actually his 81 in the bridge.
check out TUNDRACHANNEL - Forsake Not The Dream
They have an awesome cover video of this awesome song!
I'm happy that i can do this perfectly after practicing for a couple months after seeing this video
Despite the bad press EMG's get from a lot of people, I personally thought Matt's guitar tone here is pretty badass!
trivium and as i lay dying = future the metal
that corey guy is a monster!
This took me 8 months just to learn this whole song!!!! \m/
Seems like a Blackouts vs EMGs to me, lol.
+Cahyo Amiseso they both sound sick together they dont seem to clash
I'm so glad they got rid of the deans.
Matt plays Heavfy A.F.!!!
did anyone catch the harmony on the bridge riff? normal speed matt played it, but slow corey played it. i think corey fucked it up so matt jumped in on normal speed. not knockin them in anyway. they are great guitarists, i was just curious if anyone noticed that as well.
My fav band out there, such talented guys just love their music no matter what album love em all 🔥
One of Corey's best solos
I’m biased as they are my favourite band and have been for years. But my goodness, they are so incredibly talented. A serious level of class on every regard. They deserve far more recognition than I think they get.
corey fucks up @ 1:34
I don't know why, but Corey's sliding at 2:40 is awesome!
Go back to their first guitar world video and then watch this. They have improved so much as musicians and technically as players. Really inspiring!
This riff make my right hand go to the hell😱 especially corey stuff
This was sloppy but you can see in Matt's technique the crazy economy of motion in the downpicking section versus Corey. He barely moves his hand past the strings after striking them.
nah I think they have different techniques
could be the different camera angles as well as the position the pick is hold between the fingers. But every guitarist plays how it's most comfortable for him.
There is nothing inherently different in downpicking technique. You are striking the strings in the same motion. Sure pick angle, wrist, elbow and finger motion can be different but they are all a means to a similar end. What I am saying is Matt's is superior from a technical standpoint.
Matt himself has said, that he down picks better than corey!....corey on the other hand is a shredder!
I was about to say you were wrong, that this isn't a kirk/James deal. But then payed attention to the video.. Haha you'reright hhere does have a better DP technique.
i can't stop..
Ok... 12 Year old video but................. the pre chorus is hard as fuck... or fast as fuck. Struggle so hard with it
I love the riffs of this song so much 🔥🤘😍
TRIVIUM ❤
It's going to be hard to beat the album "In Waves." Can not wait to hear what's next!!
that pickup switch tho
The song is 100x better with no vocals, no excessive drumming just a great click sound, and slowed down
@Colton527 Your "valid argument" is shit. You're just throwing shit at them without giving any notice to the music or the artwork or the effort they put in to it. They said it themselves this record is not meant to be like Shogun which was a true masterpiece, it was all about keeping it simple when they could've been just as generic as all the other bands out there. This was keeping it simple and serving the songs in the most calm and emotional sense period.
@DeadlyDictator Yeah I kinda like just screamo but I dont really know why I think I just like the loud sound:')
I think bands like slayer and metallica, iron maiden and bands from like 70's 80's and 90's that type of metal just isnt really around anymore. The majority of bands I listen to are 2000's bands.
Have you ever listen to epica? they are metal and opera kind of singing but they are a really good band
@ellis0896 yea mixes of vocal styles are great but all those scene and screamo bands that just sing like homos and then yell into the lyrics about how much they hate their parents and teachers really fuck up the metal genre. once a kid asked what i was listening to and i said FUCKIN SLAYER! and he said o that screamo band? and then i spit in his face. i dont now i guess im a kind of dude who likes what he likes and hates everything else, but i really only hate opera, rap, screamo, and rap.
@ellis0896 actually its just because the vocals and some of the riffs... its just a really over used riff pattern type you know? like im into mastodon and cannibal corpse alot, and they have some tech stuff. i also like red fang and the sword with more mellow groove metal. but this is borderline screamo band stuff. like i clicked on an in flames video like this and what they played was kick fuckin ass, but then i went to the actual song (parallels) and the singer kicked in, it was a huge letdown
Honestly, i don't get how Corey can downpick the pre-chorus part at that speed (it's like 220bpm, or more?), i've gotten up to 75% tempo maybe, but 100% seems impossible, my hand slips to the skipped note almost everytime ;/ chorus is alot easier, but that's obvious cause of the versatility and thickness of high strings, does anchoring his palm helps with the build up?
@Colton527 Obviously from the time they lost Travis they have had a hard time getting to know their completely new style and that's what they are doing now, they are testing different styles in order to find themselves which is how a band should work instead of releasing 20 albums of Ascendancy during their career.
@meshuggah220 Is that right? Look how miserable Corey is! He's obviously bored as fucking hell! They focused more on oh this blob above the shore is so artistic. Let's write an album based on this blob and make it sound like punk and pop music. Shattering the skies above alone is better than this entire album. They've lost their aggressiveness.
@Abyssvx People like you restore some faith in humanity in my eyes. You see real talent that you don't personally like but you still see that it is true talent and you praise it for being true talent instead of saying it is shit just because you don't like it. Sorry for the random reply but I just had to say something.
@unknownuser890 im an atheist and you cant prove that god doesn't or does exist. that's the problem the only way you can 95% disprove it is with simple logic. but personally i dont think it exists or we had a creator as its only "evidence" is from a book written hundreds and hundreds of years ago and changed many times. But you cant simply say god doesn't exist.
@Biake22 "Down From The Sky," "Into The Mouth of Hell We March," "Shogun," "Departure," "Contempt Breeds Contamination," "Built To Fall," "A Grey So Dark," and "Inception Of The End." Those ones kick some serious ass, but in all realness you should just pick up a cd or two and listen to their albums to completion. Life changing stuff, I guarantee it.
@Rafterman123 i play bass, and good basses are very low maintenance, like it crunchy? throw some new strings and a low level of gain on. like it smooth? wear out some roundwounds and boost the low end. I'm sure a guitarists mix can be a bitch when not running through a huge rig. but thanks for all the info you guys.
i just cannot seem to make that muting noise that happens thruout the chorus starting at 1:30
it has to be a pickup problem :/ idk what it is, i gently lay my fingers on the strings and strum exactly in the rhythm they do but it really sounds terrible. nothing like theirs at all
anyone have any advice or tips?
i kind of see some metal bands now as similar to guns n roses. not musically, but there's a lot of bands that aren't really sure what they're doing, and bands like trivium, machine head and mastodon are writing writing killer music and taking everything with a serious focus.
Insane, i cant stop watching it! Im lightyears away from trying to play this :D
Actually a lightyear is a measure of distance, not of time
+Luis Bgarza Yeah Shithead, i know that. Stop correcting people on the internet. nobody likes you folks.
If you´re such a smart guy, write an article about your smarty smartness and leave people the fuck alone.
+dynatwenty Chill mate, it was supposed to be a nice gesture of mine to correct you because I thought you didn't know. God, there are so many pussies on the internet.
+Luis Bgarza i was just kidding :P high five metalfriend
It depends what you mean by being good as a musician, because matt has an amazing outlook of musicianship, and is very, very skilful at playing his guitar, sure he doesn't know theory particularly, but tbh that doesn't mean he isn't that good as a musician.
You want fast downpicking? Watch James Hetfield, the things he can play by only downpicking is insane.
He downpicks pretty much everything, so don't worry about me not giving you an example of this, you will find one quickly enough.
@ellis0896 ill check them out real quick, and i do wish a certain little known band uhh whats the name... metallosa metallita metalli somethin that are doing a collab with some guy named lou reed or something. .. would really quit. ;D
@MajorPonch you're right, i only heard 'the crusade'. i'd say feel/cachiness of the melody is important, but without other guy, their songs would be kind of boring... not that I know any of their songs. Could you suggest me some? I like melodic stuff.
i used to think that but i really dont think he is. matt has a wider range of play. seems like he can double what ever corey does. he just never chooses to play the craziest riffs anymore. but when he does. it's amazing
None of metallica`s songs are hard honestly, master of puppets is probably the only song where a person can break a tiny sweat with the downpicking, other than that, it`s not really that bad
Can someone tell me what notes they are hitting during the bridge starting at 2:05 to 2:28???
This riff is killing me, especially when they do some pull offs on the 2nd string. Can't figure it out. Help!
@ShogunJackson play a lot of thrash and death metal. you'll develop that ability. imo it's the best way to do rhythm parts like that usually. it gives it this extra punch and unique tonal consistency.
@KrayzieBoneThug4Lyfe I give a valid argument and you get pissed. Sorry but In Waves is an inferior album compared to the rest. Shattering The Skies Above alone is better than the entire album.
@mrstillarookie I'm sure your God is very proud of the way you carry yourself and talk to people.Way to turn the other cheek and be the bigger man. You're representing religious people just perfect:-)
@DeadlyDictator Fair enough, Yeah yeah I get you. In flames arent even that popular either I think they are quite good even the singing because he has kind of a mix between screaming and clean
no not that lol i wouldnt call that noise. i can do that easily. what i mean is the muting that they do in between those octave chords. "chicken scratch" stuff when i try that it sounds terrible lol
DAMN, these guys are TALENTED. That shit is string skipped?? At that speed? Wowza.
hm, i have big problems with alt. picking but fats downpicking is easy for me... in the 5 first months of learning guitar i only played metallica...so there i got my influence
