  • Today I talk about a topic that my viewers have been wanting to see. I share my recommendations for more powerful and moving graphic novels that brought me to tears. Books that moved me because of particular scenes or the entire book was sad. Not books that sucked so bad that they made me cry. :)

"Spider-Man: Blue" ... my all-time favorite Spider-Man story. It hasn't made me cry, but I felt the emotions welling up. It is a truly beautiful story and shows the power of Spider-Man comics in a way that most comics haven't. Ya'll ought to check out the Gallery Edition next year. It's going to be amazing.

Chip Zdarsky’s Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #310. Beautiful, beautiful issue on what Spider-Man means to people. There’s one particular passage about a young boy. Peter changed his life for the better, but couldn’t remove him from being near those who wouldn’t/couldn’t change . . . I had to set the comic down several times to wipe my eyes and collect myself.
Better Place published by IDW, I believe, is incredibly touching, too.

Maybe the climax of Seconds (to match your LaS)

This is more tears of rage but with a lot of sadness and heartbreak too.
Ultimates 3/Ultimatum. Before I start, Omar, I know you don't rate the Ultimates or Mark Millar much, and I know that Joe Madureira is one of your fave artists which makes me sad too.
After Ultimates 1& 2 which are my second favourite books of all time, I opened U3 and Joe Madureira's 'art' hit me first, just Effin' Diabolical as Mr Butcher would say, a mix of crappy graffiti with manga (2 things I loathe) after Bryan Hitch's glorious finely detailed art, this junk scribbling gave me my first WTF moment Then I started reading, and I wanted to strangle Jeph Loeb, all the characterization Miller had built up over the previous 6 years reduced to 'Biff-Pow' writing from the 50's I was literally crying 'WTF have they done?' I must have thrown that book across the room like 10 times, then Ultimatum came along and Loeb just gleefully killing characters left and right. I don't know what the heads of Marvel were thinking, green lighting this, the Ultimate Universe saved Marvel from Bankruptcy, and most of the MCU is lifted from the UU, to see Marvel Peeing all over it just broke my heart.
Sorry long reply, but this is the edited version down from 2 pages.

Of your list I have only Y The Last Man 5 hard cover set and the Strangers In Paradise omnis (and related) books. Yeah, they were touching stories. I started branching away from traditional superhero fare a few years ago. I like the Brubaker Criminal series and some of his other work. Currently reading the Complete American Gods omni and it is a slog for me. I think Gaiman is not for me. I hope it comes together and gels.

Yea, its damn near impossible to pick a "best 10" when there are about 100 worthy works in the medium. You definately did a great job highlighting some lesser known and important works. Daniel Clowes's "eightball" would have certainly ben worthy had the lost been longer.

I tend to blend "uncomfortable and crying" as the same emotional reaction from a story, because I don't literally cry over comics. So this is my top 5 emotional single issues since I don't read many trades.
    1) Marvel Secret Wars 1 (2015) that final page where Reed loses Susan Richards left me GUTTED.
    2) Wolverine 2 (2020) I read this before I had any knowledge of Krakoa and the Resurrection protocol. I literally gasped and died inside with Logan when I learned he actually killed Jean.
    3) Spawn 29, as a father that issue hits home. It's real hard for me to read, and I'm not sure I will ever read it again. Testament to the Todd Father's writing in his prime.
    4) Watchmen 2, the Comedian and Sally Jupiter scene. All time uncomfortable moment for me and the Comedian is my all time hated character because of it.
5)Sandman 10, the stuff children go through in this series is nearly enough to make me put the series down. But it's a legendary series in a guilty pleasure kind of way.
