How can you prime then paint the inside of hollow iron spindles that are not yet attached to the railing?

You can not do it but the manufacture can by putting the hollow iron inside container full of paint and then cock the iron metal in a special furnace.

I have some stair rails that I wanted to paint . The guy painting is recommending that I spray them but I don’t want to fumes around my home and I can’t get the paint color that I want in a ready to go paint can . If i use a brush doesn’t it leave brush strokes ? How can I get a nice look with a brush and why do you recommend using a brush vs spray ?

You can use only a good brush and the result will be great. I used brush and spray. Spray is faster and can reach places easily than brush.

just wear a mast and get a piece of cardboard. Spraying will provide the cleanest finish. Brush will leave streaks, I hate streaks on my rails. If you have asthma, I get it... In that case a mini paint roller may work.
