I love teaching people how to paint!
I created The Idaho Painter as an alternative to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to teach everyone across the globe how to paint from the non-experienced to the long time professional. No experience is necessary. My channel is for the home improvement person, DIY painter, handyman professional, home and garden enthusiast, and even the professional painter.

The paint in the 5 gallon bucket is genius!! I'm a start doing that. Just one paint spill makes it worth it in hindsight lol.
It's not a five gallon. Looks like a 2 gallon. And to work out of a quart in a 2 gallon can is ridiculous - far from genius!!
*****
No, just a master painter with over 36 year exp. I wouldn't work out of a quart can with a big brush - ever. It's silly.

Absolutely agree !
I REALLY didn't want to mask and spray my handrail, so thanks so much for posting an alternative option :)
I watched your video to learn how to cut in properly and used that method for my whole house. Have a 4K sq ft house and that saved me so much time, not having to tape, as well as gave me such a crisp clean line! Ty for your tips! I’m on to my handrails and newel posts next for my stairs with these tips!
The bucket is genius. Amazing how the most simplest things are gane changing
Your voice is so calming lol. I wanna paint all the stairs now and it’s 9pm.
Thanks for the tip to start from the bottom and go up!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
@@Idahopainterwhat type of paint you use for hand rails
Very nice demonstration of the A.S.S. technique - Apply, Spread, Smooth. Good work as always!
Thanks for your valuable information. My fist time doing it . Glad I found you. 🙂
Very nice tips 👌 . Very professional the way You paint 🎨
ive been a painter for 45 years this dudes a pro no dout !
You have all my admiration.
These videos are great. Really helpful tips and tricks. Thanks buddy
Customer never has any idea what problems they could be causing. Stay strong chris!
Thank you man
Your videos are very helpful.
God bless you
I really wanted to see how you got the top part where the rail is close to the wall. Dealing with this now. I can barely fit my hand in that space so a stubby brush is out. I might just have to hold a trim pad in my hand?
Can u spray them or is it better to brush them i understand that is going to be alot of covering
So many good tips thank you!
Thanks for watching Eric!
Thanks for sharing your expertise! You're awesome!!
You are welcome, thanks for watching & supporting!
Painting away from the wetted area vs towards it? Brush marks?
Great video and awesome tips as usual from a pro. Perfect timing because this will be a new project to tackle next month. If you are applying multiple coats would you recommend using a deglosser between each for max adhesion? Don't know if that would help paint stick to itself or not.
I would love to c more videos of hand brushing things like hand rails etc. I'm from n Ireland and we r relatively new to the world of waterbased paints and would love to know what you guys do on hand rails for durability etc
We paint them with multi-surface acrylic
Great video. We are always painting the hand railing that goes upstairs. Is there anything we can do to avoid peeling a lot. Thanks
I never use latex paint for hand railings because of the peeling.
I only use oil base enamel. It lasts forever.
What type of paint do you use gor hand rails? Nobody ever says which type.
How much does the brush quality matter? I tried to do mine and it left a ton of brush strokes so I wiped it all off as best I could while still wet. Is it technique or does the brush really matter?
What paint is good for railing ??
Pro class semigloss last long easy to clean the railing??
what type of paint to use? acrylic latex paint?
Great video ...
like the question below.... how bout a baluster painting demo ?
Can brush marks be covered with another coat of latex paint using a high quality brush? Thx for these videos!
I did it with just sanding down enough to smooth it out, then do the same process as shown in the video.
that's interesting since I was able to fix some of mine. Does it depend on the type of paint? I had used Sherwin Williams Pro Classic that was self leveling. It had happened on my kitchen doors. That was when I ended up buying my Graco TrueCoat II and sanded then sprayed the doors.
***** I think Ruth was responding to my original question. I pretty much spray everything but walls in my house. Thanks for your videos
Great info!
what paint did you use? can you give us the name?
Can you use stain Varathane Wood Stain instead of paint thx plan on doing this soon
you can
I'm painting for my folks today! But the base of the railing is next to carpet and I have no idea what to do except to blue tape it
I have a video masking carpet stairs on my channel!
And remember kids, this is a PRO who is teaching you how to paint a railing, so do everything just as he does and everything will be sweet. For example, DO NOT use any type of drop cloth because drips, spills, and accidents NEVER happen, ESPECIALLY to a pro. Thanks for the pro tips, mr pro painter!
lol, okay
Would a small sprayer like the Titan Flexsprayer or Graco's Truecoat would have been a good option instead of the paintbrush? I'm not sure what kind of finish they would provide so I'm hoping you can help.
alwaysrockn2009 none sprays top of handrail cause it's normally different color and it would take too long
Do you have to sand first?
Thanks
Was the lady customer all like “dude you didn’t cover my carpet and gloss paint does not come out!”?
easy to paint that section in ten minutes and not spill a drop. drop sheet will get in the way and trip you especially on stairs
@@conor8321 I just think its brave especially with a beige carpet. In the UK I've seen painters put a sticky plastic sheeting down that comes on a roll, no trips and it just peels off. Do they have that in the US? I won't put a sheet down when we do ours as we are going to change the carpet. Do you have a video on prepping the bannister and painting the spindles?
Thank you
Using a brush, even with extender added, its IMPOSSIBLE to not have brush lines. Why not use a 4" foam roller? If I am not spraying trim of any kind I like to keep coats very thin whether its with a brush or foam roller. I would always use foam on a handrail as it gets handled and that kind of roller reduces finished texture as much as possible.
Works for us
I wished you lived in GA
Did you paint the bottom?
Yes
what about a stained hand rail to a painted hand rail?
Great video. Is that Sherwin Williams Paint an OIL-based paint?
latex
How do you paint the balusters?
***** why can't you use a brush?
How to slow down drying time ?
Is it not good to roll the rails?
OK
I found John Cena!
lol, not quite John Cena
not clear with paint??
Whoever painted are staircase before we bought the home painted over staples and dirt and didn't even bother cleaning the staircase first. We think we're going to need to strip it or maybe just do some sanding.
Dang
This guy should have used stix primer and a red bull paint brush
you put the paint bucket in a bucket....clever
need to increase your audio input. cannot hear you even with laptop volume maxed. FYI.
You should be wearing a mask doing that , great job though .
Yes, but I do not when I film so I can talk
Good to know ! Great video .
Why would he need a mask? Tree hugger
A pro never paints from the can
Yeah, maybe
Go grab a life Mike
I think Purdy is too OVER rated! There a lot of very good brands, like Proform, Wooster, Corona.., and some even well cheaper.
People always try to do it themselves and leave the repaint looking terrible like it’s my fault, maybe if u don’t know what ur doing don’t do it
Like the advice tho
