I love Raphael in the 2012 Nickelodeon TMNT cartoon, I love most of the characters in that show but focusing on Raph I noticed something special about him while rewatching some of the show a few months back. Despite his anger issues, Raphael was surprisingly pragmatic, normally one would expect a hot headed character to make completely outlandish decisions due to their anger getting the better of them, whereas Raphael in this cartoon was actually very logical with his anger, he was blunt and to the point, often getting angry over very reasonable things and despite his hot headed nature he would usually make decisions that were reasonable within the circumstances. One of the many reasons I love that show is because it doesn't outright vilify Raphael for his angered tendencies, if anything it's portrayed in a way to make Raph more sympathetic. Donatello may be my favorite turtle but Raphael is a very close second.
'87 Raph is one of my favourites because of his personality and he's good for making you laugh. Yeah he might be the gentlest alongside Rise Raph, but I think all of the Raphaels are great in their own way. If we didn't have him, we wouldn't know what he'd be like besides the fighter strong guy personality we always see.
Raphael is my snarky smart ass role model! Along with wilma from the flintstones and alice from the honeymooners. While eveyone in the 87 tmnt cartoon everyone had their comedic moments, Raphael was special because he was just so good at snarky one liner attitude . For example there was a episode where the turtles got a coupon to a expensive french restaurant (that served pizza for some reason lol). The coupon was wet and dripping from sewer water because michaelangelo found the coupon in the sewers. The waiter is super snooty and rude to them, because of the wet coupon, and tells them "your dripping on our carpet " (Can't remember his exact words). Raphael's response is (He's clearly pissed at this classist ass who is judging them) "Yeah well show us to our table and we'll drip there n'est-ce pas!" The episode is call "back to the egg" It on dailymotion dai.ly/x6vhkwf (I think its at 4:05) I laughed so hard at that as a kid because Raphael was basically saying: "dont judge us you bitch ass, we maybe poor but dont think you can just punk up and disrespect us, especially since yo ass is our server " Then the snooty waiter talkes them to their seat and says "I certainly hope you eat and run" (What a punk bitch!!!) Anyway Raphael's response is "Remind me to give that guy a big tip: like dont eat crackers in bed!" (This can be seen at 5:36 of the link i shared) As a kid i howled in laughter, as a African American, i really related to the discrimination that the turtles faced in a situation like that. Im sure it wasn't the writer's intention, but i was so happy to see Raphael quip back at that snooty waiter bitch! Rob Paulsen's vocals add to how relatable 87 Raphael is. I say all this to say that, this is why Raphael from the 87 cartoon is so special!
But I'm sure we would already gotten the hint of what he's be like. Raph ain't known for being gentle or a funny man. They Couldve made him grumpy but a grump with a heart of gold.
Fun Fact: 1987 Raphael is voiced by Rob Paulsen or The Voice of Yakko Warner from the Animaniacs, Pinky from Pinky and The Brain, and Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron.
I've always related to the "smart" character in those team dynamics, although I made a lot of jokes like Michelangelo. Still, I was more of a Donnie fan myself.
I usually don't care for the smart characters, but there was something special about Donnie in 2012. His voice was adorable, and fitted him, along with his tooth gap, he was just a lovable dork. That's where they messed up in Rise, he sounds sarcastic to me.
This isn’t my favorite version of Rapheal, but I’m certainly a fan of him. I love just how much of a jerk he is to everyone. Yeah, a lot of people in this show have that aspect too, but those are characters like Shredder, Kraang, or Vernon, who aren’t supposed to be moral leaders for the kids. Rapheal is one of the heroes, but that’s certainly not stopping from being as cynical as the other characters mentioned. Also, I commend the writers for taming Raph’s personality from the comics, but not to the point where he just felt like another Michelangelo.
Yes this Raphael's snarky, cynical, crude, sarcastic, avoident, dry, bedpan, cheeky, smartass, asshole, distant, blunt, tactless, to-the-point, attitude is a passive aggressive jerk, but is the best. I can relate to him. But there are times, as of late, that I can go to the next level and relate to the "I'm misunderstood, gloated at, mocked, used, unsatisfied, stagnant, unapproved, neglected, abandoned, unappealing, unappreciated, underrated, let down, frustrated, hurt, scared, and abused, so right now, I'm feeling really very confused, unsure, insecure, alone, undecided, and vulnerable, and so, Dammit, I'm Truly Very Pissed Off Here!!" aggressive assertive blunt in-your-face honest rude attitude we see from later characteristics of Raphael. So seriously, I think a good full balance is realistic healthy and good for all. One way or the other its healthy to both keep it in, and, to also let it out when evenly and properly appropriate. That way it's good for both giver and receiver. And you won't get resentful envious bitter prejudice or hateful, nor worry about having either a future cancer stroke heart attack or hyper tension!
I thought the turtles had the most cohesive team bond in this version of the story (not that they don't make good team-mates in the other works). The 1987 group felt a little more like a bunch of teens growing up together who happened to be turtles and go on adventures, while a lot of the other shows/movies/etc. focus a lot more on the 'mutant crime-fighting' angle and explore how that impacts the 'teens growing up' thing. I just like that there is a version that lets us have a slightly more laid-back, lower pressure approach. :)
1987 Raphael is not only my favorite incarnation of the character, but my favorite fictional character PERIOD. It's true that all the characters could make quips and one-liners, but Rob Paulsen's impeccable delivery meant that Raph delivered those punchlines BEST. Furthermore, 1987 Raph may not have been as hot-headed as his successors, but he could be - by his own admission - bitter. It's no secret that he has a chip on his shoulder towards humans, only feeling accepting towards a few close friends. And he's quick to point out Michelangelo's incompetence. But rather than resort to threats or physical aggression, 1987 Raphael channels his frustrations into jokes, making him perhaps the most emotionally mature incarnation of the character. It's partly because of him that I still use humor as a coping mechanism to this day.
Yes!!! There were many episodes where he pointed out his mistrust of humans, his bitterness, his at times reluctance to play the hero. The 87 turtles can be deeper than people give them credit for, esp in the later seasons. Like when Leo and Mike split and Raph and Don split in the red sky seasons. Shows that Raph and Don were always the more reluctant ones.
There's another thing about Raph that made him special. He's the only Turtle to have a love interest in different versions of the series and comics. In the 1987 series he had a girlfriend name Mona Lisa whose a mutant salamander. In the archie comics Raph's girlfriend was a fox name Ninjara. In the comics from IDW Raph's girlfriend is a mutant snowfox name Alopex. in the 2012 series from Nickelodeon his girlfriend was an alien salamandrian also name Mona Lisa. So Raph was the only turtle to ever have a girlfriend.
Also 87 Mikey had a thing with the Nutrino girl from Dimension X. Both 2003 and 2012 Mikey had Renet (plus Shinagami for 2012 Mikey). Leo had Karai in both 2003 and 2012.
Honestly, 87 has always been my favorite version of Raph (1990 movie being my second favorite) I like the other versions as well, but the ”I’m angry and misunderstood” thing sometimes gets tiring to me (personally). Him being more of a cheeky, but likeable @$$h0lę just sits better with me.
Honestly the ”I’m angry and misunderstood” got redeemed in my eyes thanks to the Image/Vol 3 where Raph's anger and need for independence got a proper direction and exploration (taking the mantle of Shredder and trying to the Foot a force for good was a stroke of genius !)... yet even then he has a sarcastic and humorous side to him to round him up.
Yes this Raphael's snarky crude sarcastic avoident dry bedpan cheeky smartass asshole distant blunt tactless to-the-point attitude is passive aggressive, but the best. I can relate to him. But there are times, as now, that I can go to the next level and relate to the "I'm misunderstood, gloated at, mocked, used, unsatisfied, stagnant, unapproved, neglected, abandoned, unappealing, unappreciated, underrated, let down, frustrated, hurt, scared, and abused, so right now, I'm feeling really very confused, unsure, insecure, alone, undecided, and vulnerable, and so, Dammit, I'm Truly Very Pissed Off Here!!" aggressive assertive blunt in-your-face honest rude attitude we see from later characteristics of Raphael. Stop I think a good balance is realistic healthy and good for all.
Also Rise Raph is far from a moody guy too, in fact he's a gentle giant that can be goofy and when he's angry (which is rare) it's justified and not as a "character trait"
2012 Raphael is my favorite incarnation because when I was younger, I could relate to him. I used to have anger-issues when I was a kid and something about Raph really resonated with me.
Leo is the best turtle. You can't say he never looked out for his brother's and tried to improve himself and his bros. Also he has swords which I love swords and he was blue which was my favorite color as a kid. Also he is patient and a responsible older sibling. If you had to take care of your younger siblings and try to keep them in line. You can relate to Leo like I do.
This was the first incarnation of Raphael I've ever seen. I loved his wise guy sarcasm. To me, this was the source material. At least I thought. Imagine my surprise when I don't really recognize him in the comics and the other series. But looking into it, angry Raph is just cynical Raph taken to the next level. He bounces from neutral good to chaotic good. I can see that in myself sometimes. God bless and Jesus loves you bro. Great video.
WTF is with the religious nonsense? How about practicing a little humility by keeping that stuff in your place of worship? And why would you so arrogantly presume that the video uploader believes in your god? I swear, Christian fanatics have no class. Furthermore, I'm going to be merciful by not challenging your claim that your gods love anyone.
@@JanetStarChild All kinds of people, even guys like me, love the Ninja Turtles. I'm really happy you seem to, come to think of it. From what I've heard, kids used to play with nunchucks and end up hitting themselves. Parents through a fit, so Mikey used a grappling hook instead starting in Season 4. The funny thing is that there are episodes where he holds nunchuks, but never fights with them.

The 1987 Raph when he appeared on the 2012 series was depicted as sarcastic as he was but with a bit of a Temper, to the point of having arguments with the 2012 Raph and Donny respectively. He was still funny and sarcastic but this time with a mean streak, which to me seemed perfect to in a way get him to still be the temperamental 80s Raph but slightly meaner to as to not completely change his kid friendly persona that was used on the 87 cartoon and yet remember that Raph IS the hothead of the team.
Yes, this Raphael's snarky, cynical, crude, sarcastic, avoident, and antisocial. His quirks, quips, burns, roasts, put downs, insults, and dry, bedpan humour was great. He was cheeky, a smartass, an asshole, a wise guy. His being a distant, blunt, snippy, tactless, to-the-point, attitude was a argumentative passive aggressive jerk with a mean streak, but he was the best. I can relate to him. But he was social kind and lovable.. but only to a point. He never wore his feelings nor heart on his sleeve. He was private, closed, pushy, dismissive, serious, reserved, but still lighthearted and fun. He deeply cared for others, and really enjoyed his family and friends and their company, but he was introvert and a loner. And that's ok. But, yet, there are times, esp. as of late, that I can also go "to the next level" and relate to the "I'm misunderstood, gloated at, mocked, used, unsatisfied, stagnant, unapproved, neglected, abandoned, unappealing, unappreciated, underrated, let down, frustrated, hurt, scared, and abused, so right now, I'm feeling really very confused, unsure, insecure, alone, undecided, and vulnerable, and so, Dammit, I'm Truly Very Pissed Off Here!!" aggressive, assertive, blunt, in-your-face, violent, honest, and rude attitude we see from later characteristics of Raphael. Though I enjoyed Turtles Forever I was Pissed with their Blatant Disrespect of the 80s Turtles and their Horrible Arrogance towards them and the 80s show! That's when the 2003 Turtles felt like Mean Priggish Entitled Bullies, and so, they Dropped a few pegs down in my book! That Was Wrong! The 2012 Turtles was kinda similar BUT at least these Turtles and the makers of the show showed More Humility Welcome Kindness and Respect towards the 80s Turtles and the show! They went Up a few pegs in my book, and seemed More like Brothers.. Family! 2012 4Ever! Very True! Very Right! Very Correct! It Didn't! The way the movie haphazardly portrayed both the 2003 and 1987 Turtles was Distasteful! Yet without the 87 Turtles there wouldn't have been the 2003 Turtles! But I did LOVE that the Prime Comics Turtles put the 2003 Turtles in their place! That's why I said 'enjoyed' earlier.
87 Ralph is my favourite turtle from that series. Even though he’s fairly different from other incarnations. Ron Paulson’s voice probably has something to do with it.
The only turtle in 87's cartoon who's personality wasn't described exactly as it was in comic book. In the original source material Raphael was the most aggressive and impulsive turtle. Him being a sarcastic philosopher in 87's series was something i wasn't a fan of but it was a right thing to do back then.
The 1987 Raphael was, and always will be, my favorite incarnation of the character. For each version who's mostly the angry one, this guy is more bitter and snippy, which makes him a little more tolerable to me.
Rob Paulson’s sarcastic delivery of the character made him for me. To the point was weird to see the angrier angst version in the 90’s movie, and moving forward.
Well, my first impression was with 2012, so I have a soft spot for it, when it comes down to the specific characters, Imma say my fave incarnation of each of them, besides 2012. Leo: Well, Rise, actually. Though, one of the many reasons is because he has the same va as Sonic in the new Movie, so. But, I didn't like him at first, I was so used to their personalities in 2012, that anything else felt alien to me at the time. Still hate Donnie in Rise, but Leo is awesome. Raph: 2007 Movie, he was kinda the main character, though, so yeah. He actually felt betrayed when Leo left, and went off on his own. Yes, he left Donnie and Mikey, but he had the responsibility of being the oldest, since Leo wasn't around. Donnie: Okay, this hard, since he's my fave, but I actually like him a lot in the 80s show, from what I've seen. Though he was kinda just there when he had something smart to say, I loved him. Absolutely HATE him in Rise, but... I think my love for him is why. In 2012, he was the lovable dork, whereas in Rise, he just seems sarcastic. It might be his voice, but still. I love Donnie in pretty much every iteration but Rise, even NM. I'm just obsessed with him, so I take new personality for him seriously. Mikey: 2003, I just love his girly screams, okay? XD It's cute when he latches on to the others, too. I don't really have an actual explanation as to why I like him in 2003, but I just do. Though, I love them all in 2012, and it will forever be my fave. There was just.. something about it, that was different. Maybe the fact that they actually showed the bond they had with each-other. That one moment where Mikey hugged Raph after Splinter had 'died', kills me everytime. Same with the hug with Raph and Leo, when Raph was saying how 'Maybe that's because you were always Splinter's favourite!' Like, these moments make you really feel for the characters, it what makes it so special to me. Though, like I said before, it's also because it was how I started liking the series, so yeah.
87 Raphael not only had wisecracks I loved, but his personality seemed the most pronounced to me. And I love how he and Donatello interact. ❤ Anyway I love all the Raphs in the cartoons! Though Donatello is my favorite in ROTTMNT.
Oh yeah. Raphael was and always will be my favorite ninja turtle. And this video explains it all. The very first TMNT live action movie was the best one, ever.
Though 2012 Raph is my fav (since he's pretty much a hybrid of snarky and hothead), 1987 Raph is the closest to my personality due to his constant snarky moments. As you said in the video, he still has moments of being a hothead which became more prominent in season 7 & the Red Sky episodes. Deep down I feel he's not so different from his other versions be he's just trying to keep things cool for the audience of this series (in context of him breaking the 4th wall).
Raphael is my favorite 87 turtle, my favorite incarnation of him is the 03 variant but for me watching the 87 cartoon, what keeps me drawn in are the Shredder & Krang, I'm not too crazy on the turtles as a whole in that series which like, the draw of the franchise to me are the turtles, I love seeing how they change within each iteration & I love most of them so when one falls flat on the turtles, it's a bit of a turnoff for me. It's thankful that as a lover of cartoon slapstick, I can remain engaged in the 87 show because it's great seeing the classic gags come up & I actually enjoy how they utilize their surroundings rather than fighting head on with their weapons, it gives them a nice flare. Raphael just seems to embody what I enjoy in that series so it's easiest for me to enjoy him. Also, I'm a Rob Paulsen fan. I tend to like Donatello, he's my favorite 2003 & Rise turtle, I am not too far in the IDW comics but he's my favorite there so far too, so it was a huge disappointment for me that I didn't like 2012 Donnie all that much, I wanted to like him because Rob Paulsen & there are things I do enjoy about him, it's just I struggled to enjoy him as a whole because the writing didn't allow for him to have too much character growth in regards to his interest in April because every time he almost did have his learning moments, it's undone when April kisses him. If he actually learned from those experiences, I would have very much enjoyed that Donnie as a character. So at least with 87 Raphael, there is a Rob Paulsen turtle that I can enjoy. Have to say, 87 Raphael is a fun turtle to write for. Been putting out a fic that's a crossover of 03/2012/Rise & multiple times, the 87 turtles are referenced because the events in Turtles Forever play a big role in it but the 2012 turtles also lightly mention the fact they've met visitors from another dimension before, takes them a while to realize that the 2012 & 2003 gangs met the same turtles. One person commented on it pointing out that I reference them but they're not in here & they're disappointed by that because they enjoy my characterizations of the turtles & they feel I could probably get the 87 turtles accurate. Sadly, I had to tell them that I couldn't do that because I wouldn't know how to write them. I respect those turtles but because I'm not so hooked on them, I don't think I could get the characters down correctly. That had me thinking, I do enjoy Raphael a lot so I decided to do a test run, just sort of write out a little scenario for myself that wouldn't be posted where 2012 Leo, 2003 Mikey, Mutant Mayhem Donnie, & 87 Raphael are kidnapped & tossed into a prison cell together & have to endure each others' company & is told from the perspective of Leo, turtles aged up a bit (except Donnie) & all together is a little more adult, not too much though like there's some light swearing & conversation topics that Leo is constantly trying his best to police because he doesn't want young ears hearing that stuff. Raphael has been my favorite to write in this scenario. It starts with Leo waking up & Raphael is the only other turtle in the cell with him at first, others come in later, Leo has a massive headache because of how he got captured, long story short, slipped on a patch of ice on a rooftop & fell into a dumpster where Big Mama's goons (spoiled the captors, reason why no Rise turtle was in this) happened to be there at that time. With Leo clearly not appearing well, Raphael jokes, "you're lookin' a little green." So it begins, the start of poor Leo having to deal with THAT. Raphael keeps firing off some quips & replying to stuff sarcastically but when it's clear Leo isn't having it because he's not feeling so well, Raphael pulls out what is deemed as his magic candy, pretty much just some ibuprofen in a M&M's mini container & offers it up. One thing I appreciate about the Raphs is that they do care about others & want to help & protect them so he does get the message & lightens up, assisting where he can. Since I can't write the 87 turtles, I don't know if I'd get around to posting it but I think I might do research to fix things up & maybe start getting it out in November since it takes place during Christmas time. I like the plot a whole lot where Big Mama wants to have turtley-boos from four different dimensions duke it out in a Christmas Eve wizbang & of course she had to nab a Battle Nexus Champion in order to stick it to the Daimyo. She picked probably the worst Raphael for it you'd think but part of why the four have to share a cell is so they can get on each others' nerves & actually fight when it comes to it & with how laid back & chill he'd be in the situation, constantly being sarcastic too, would be enough to push the other three to be sick of him & willing to brawl. Mikey ends up getting special treatment since he is a Battle Nexus Champion to help push the fight to happen. Leo picks up on what she's doing & tries his best to control the situation but things do end up on edge throughout, been an interesting thing for me personally because I love looking into people's minds & when you're locked in a cell without much going on, I get lots of brain exploring, yay!
I’ve loved ninja turtles since I was around 4 and my favorite turtle is raph but my favorite iteration is 2012 since he has an arc and not a flat character
2012 was pretty good, because he wasn't just a total jerk at all times. He showed a lot of care for others, and trained a lot to make his anger a strength, rather than a weakness. I thought it was pretty cool
@@k-dogg9086 Nope, he's a calm, loving, and levelheaded leader. Sure, he has his goofy moments, but he still takes his position as leader seriously and I really admire that.
@@superstarultra28 In spite of that, deep down he is still a "Raph" and solves most adversities with his fists, I love him, but he isn't my fav Raph xD I love Leo, Mikey and Donnie in Rise, tho.
I liked '87 Raph for the wisecracks and quirkiness, but the later incarnations of Raph from the 1990 movie on forward (when he adopted the heavy New York accent) was more relatable to me
3:35 if you showed that audience my little pony friendship is magic they'll probably have a heart attack, at least it's better than showing them watership down because they're just gonna combust when the blood appears.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the only version I've watched start to finish and I love the Raph in that one. All the characters in that version are great, especially Donnie. Best adaptation for my money.
Raph has always been my favorite from any incarnation…except for Rise but we don’t speak about that. Yeah they tamed him for the 87 cartoon but definitely made up for it in the 1990 film
I prefer this one cuz he's angry guy but not a stereotypical angry guy here had more to him and honestly I think this version is the funniest. But Leatherhead is best character "I guarantee"
I liked this Ralph the best 'cause this is most memorable. The later versions just made him unsociable and angry. He lost his character and was turned into a walking plot device. Which is not how he is in the comics (both Archie and Mirage). This Ralph reflect that Ralph more. This Ralph shows more concern for his family and others than the later ones. The later ones made anger his personality, which is horrible all around, but hey it makes it easier to write shows. In 87, Ralph's anger was there but was placed and displayed in clever ways. His quips mostly wasn't quips but burns and put downs, Because he was a "wise guy". Look up the def. And you will see how 87 Ralph came too be. O.g. Ralph was the most violent and passionate, so turning him into a cynical know-it-all prone to outburst made the most sense. Unlike later where he gets mad 'cause we need the plot to move.

This version of raph is the only ninja turtle I’ve ever gravitated towards honestly, even while growing up with the VHS’ and the 2012 series. Every other raph is just the generic hothead, but this raph was more complex, realistic and mature to me, in ways that both as an adult and as I child I can resonate with. ❤️
If I had to pick a favorite version of Raph, that would be hard to do. I like him in the first two TMNT movies and I also like the 2012 version of him, but the 1987 version of Raphael would the most nostalgic for me.
The Rapha from 1987 was more sarcastic than movie from 90's and the cartoons from 2003-Forward (Yeah! "TMNT Fast Foward", too). I thought he so sarcastic as Mich.
Bro the 2012 version of TMNT has Leo see the ghost of Splinter when an entire building is going up in flames, he slices Shredder's head off and its this cool montage in b&W like mirage style kind of, and whats even crazier is that he holds the husk of shredder's "helmet" (which WAS fused to his head) above to the rest of them. I know its a thing in almost all the shows that leo does that to shredder, but in the 1987 version its toned down tremendously. You famously couldnt show guns being fired after a certain year I think and almost by then if you rewatch 90s/early 2000s shows you will rarely find guns in them, it'd be laser guns or something. Its just kind of interesting how ive been rewatching the 87 version and foot clan ninjas come out with virtually everything but what a ninja would even use in any scenario. I kind of feel bad kevin eastman and peter laird werent really given more creative control for the fights to at least let the turtles fight but not kill people lol
Raph was my favorite turtle, and for years I didn’t quite know why. He was funny, but so were some of the other characters. But I figured it out: Rob Paulsen voiced him. This is the same guy that voiced Yakko on Animaniacs, and Yakko was my favorite character on that show. What makes Rob so special? He’s funny for one, and his characters have a likability that makes them fun to watch. But mostly I think it’s because Rob himself is one of the nicest voice actors ever. I’ve seen him in interviews and mingling with fans, and he is one of the most gracious, considerate, and genuine people in the entertainment industry. He loves his fans and that enthusiasm comes through his work.
I'd love to, but I need footage for that and the 2k3 series isn't gonna be on DVD any time soon. Plus, I think the episodes on TH-cam were taken down. C'mon, Nickelodeon, put this show on DVD already.
@@charactersin-depth3472 I have the footage of the serie, but it's in Italian and the maximum quality is 360p. By the way, you can still dowload the serie from TH-cam if I'm not wrong! When I first saw the 87 Ralpheal, he was one of my favorites cause he was like PETER VENKMAN N GHOSTBUSTERS & that the fact that they were both comedians like JIM CAREY, WILL SMITH & EDDIE MURPHY all together 😉
I get what you mean when you say he stands out the least, but I still find it so funny bc he was the one who instantly stood out to me when I started watching
It's cool but crude. Raph was my fav back then for the show followed by Mikey'. I'm glad I was the right age to watch the 1987 series in real time. I probably started watching in about 1988, though. Still syndicated and before CBS started showing it and having to tone it down more since it was a Saturday morning program. Cops couldn't use real guns anymore, for instance. Raph was a smartass and sarcastic. He also spoke his mind and pointed out the stupidity of most things. The scene of him losing his temper that you shared is actually a favorite for me. One of my favorite eps is Mr. Nice Guy. For that episode the imply that Raph has more of an attitude about him or that he gets annoyed easily (can't show Mirage Raph angry levels, hence the insults and burns he'd toss out...lol). He was also quick to threaten an enemy. I also seem to be drawn to sarcastic or ironic humor. I also liked his indifference when it came to humans. He seemed to question why they should bother with them sometimes, especially in the later eps. Donatello also kinda gave off that impression at times. Leo and Mikey pretty much never questioned their reasonings and just did what was right. Going back to the "crude" thing...this summed him up perfectly. There's one ep that comes to mind where the guys had to deal with an alien kid. The kid was temperamental and when upset, could destroy or blow up things. At one point, he's hinting saying that they all hate him. Mikey was like, "No, we don't hate you." Raph was like, "I do." Junk like this made me favor him. I also blame Rob Paulsen. He seemed to voice quite a few characters I really enjoyed over the years, like Gusto from the Gummi Bears, Yakko from Animaniacs, Max from Mighty Max, etc. The Archie comics were loosely based on the show, but fazed out Shredder, Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady. Raph was still sarcastic, but he also became more cynical and slightly more of a loner. He also seemed like he wanted to stand out more and realizing their situation of being the only ones of their kind got to him. So yeah, this is why I liked Raph so much back then. I could be biased as that was my first exposure to him. The 1990 movie being my second. I enjoyed him there too. I haven't watched all things TMNT (I've still never seen 2003), but I really enjoyed 2012 Raph. It was a good mix, imo.
3:36 According to Turtlepedia, 2003 series recieved negative reviews from the fans of the 80s series because It had less likeable characters and the theme song wasn't that hype at all.
The 1990 Movie of Raphael BLEW MY MIND AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Especially when up untill that point all I have seen was the 87 cartoon.. But when that first moment when you first hear him speak with Master Splinter about loosing his weapon and then he punches Donatello... I'm like ok this is NOT A FILM FOR KIDS I AM SCARED OF HIM!! 😂😂😂
I've been watching TMNT 2012 first, then a few 1987 episodes to compare the 2 Raphael versions. In my opinion, 1987 Raph is a saint in comparison to his current incarnations. Yes, his hothead temper and aggression is the most personified trait to him, but 1987 Raph doesn’t go into violent rages (except when battling foes) and just use sarcasm and wit in retaliation or fourth wall breaks to crack a joke or two. To me, he's more funnier when delivering his quips, even in a deadpan, snarky attitude.
I give this Raphael an A. The rest of them get b-minuses or c pluses. His wise guy attitude with very little anger problems was perfect. I like how he mixed his precocious, sarcasm & very very little anger little issues together in the late 80's mid 90's cartoon. I know with the 2003 & 2012 Raphael's were trying to stick to the original comic book. And that's another thing I like the red sky series from 94 to 96 kept his wise guy behavior the same. I guess adding alot more anger on the red sky cartoon would've made it too vile for kids. Since they already looked vicious. I'm glad it was really kept at a minimal while fully keeping his wise guy attitude. Even after he mutated into a mutant in the 95 season. But the late 80's to mid 90's will always be my favorite he had more jokes than Michelangelo and mikey was suppose to be the funny wise guy. I even learned jokes from that late 80's mid 90's raphael.
How would You rank each TMNT movie and cartoon? And why don't You make Your top list of Your favorite & despised TMNT characters? Btw, I love Your content, dude. Keep up the good work! ;)
Man why do people gotta be fighting about which series is better in the comments of every single thing that has to do with TMNT like get over yourselves and keep your preferences in your brain if you're gonna argue about it
Being a party, dude, and being a scientist are also not valuable assets to being a ninja ninjas, or spies and assassins, and the four of them basically do none of that throughout their iterations except for the original. At least from what I’ve seen from the shows they don’t do a lot of spying or Intel gatherings they just kind of bumble around different adventures.
Raphael is my favvo. But When I was young and watching TMNT for first time 1987 shows. My favvo was Leonardo and he is close to beat Raphael for me. I started to like Raphael after first TMNT movie and Leonardo become my second favvo.
I guess I do like the 87 version just a little bit more because he is chill and nobody likes a person who’s always angry. It be cool if once in a while, he flew off the handle to show that he does have rage but I would like to see a more focused, angry Rafael, that I would just want her goes off the car for no reason
For me I consider Raph a lovable jerk in this series. I see this incarnation kinda similar to Peter in The Real Ghostbusters, in the sense they toned down the edgier aspects of the characters. I just enjoy most franchise and think 87 is kinda underrated.
1987 Raphael, despite all the differences (not a fan of Raph being a conformist and part of the team. Even Archie and Next Mutation Raph got this right) and me preferring angry Raph in general, was STILL my favorite Turtle on that show. His sarcasm was on point. Just like Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters and Garfield in Garfield and Friends.
Wow i gotta say im a bit hurt at not even the slightest mention of rise of the tmnt raph may be leader but he still rushes in without a plan and him and leo are often butting heads
@@charactersin-depth3472 its a bit less since raph is the leader but i do think that if leonardo becomes leader in the future there will be alot more arguing between leo and raph cause instead of him saying i should be the one intead itll be i was the one and leo has shown great leadership skills the few times hes got a shot but hes still a bit immature
In the 1987 TMNT series Raph was the queer coded character. (Btw in the 2007 movie Donnie was the queer coded one, in 2012 it was Mikey and maybe Raph and in Rise of the TMNT everyone is queer coded with Leo being 100% gay)
Donatello may be my favorite turtle but Raphael is a very close second.
lmao Raph in TMNT 2012 made a LOT of stupid decisions due to his anger clouding his better judgement
He is my favorite turtle
I hate the 2012 series
@@labronthesuperninjayasin2203 So? If you hate TMNT 2012, Then why reply to the comment?

The waiter is super snooty and rude to them, because of the wet coupon, and tells them "your dripping on our carpet "
(Can't remember his exact words).
Raphael's response is
(He's clearly pissed at this classist ass who is judging them)
"Yeah well show us to our table and we'll drip there n'est-ce pas!"
The episode is call "back to the egg"
It on dailymotion
dai.ly/x6vhkwf
(I think its at 4:05)
I laughed so hard at that as a kid because Raphael was basically saying: "dont judge us you bitch ass, we maybe poor but dont think you can just punk up and disrespect us, especially since yo ass is our server "
Then the snooty waiter talkes them to their seat and says
"I certainly hope you eat and run"
(What a punk bitch!!!)
Anyway Raphael's response is
"Remind me to give that guy a big tip: like dont eat crackers in bed!" (This can be seen at 5:36 of the link i shared)
As a kid i howled in laughter, as a African American, i really related to the discrimination that the turtles faced in a situation like that.
@@leeladebris2254 sadly the corporate assholes took it down.
Fun Fact: 1987 Raphael is voiced by Rob Paulsen or The Voice of Yakko Warner from the Animaniacs, Pinky from Pinky and The Brain, and Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron.
And 2012 Donatello 😁
Huh, that's pretty cool. I always liked his voice, but I would never have guess that the same man did all of those. :)
I've always related to the "smart" character in those team dynamics, although I made a lot of jokes like Michelangelo. Still, I was more of a Donnie fan myself.
I'm a sucker for the team genius. Billy is my favorite of the original Power Rangers.
I usually don't care for the smart characters, but there was something special about Donnie in 2012. His voice was adorable, and fitted him, along with his tooth gap, he was just a lovable dork. That's where they messed up in Rise, he sounds sarcastic to me.
I've always loved Raph, this incarnation seemed so strange to me but I liked it
Same here
This isn’t my favorite version of Rapheal, but I’m certainly a fan of him.
Right On! Correct! Spot On! Very True! Point Blank! Tried & Tested! 100%! Exactly! 💯‼️Agreed! Indeed! Good One! 👏🤝👊✌👍🤙👆☝😏🙂😉😄😁😊😀😂
I feel the same way.
With maturity the same can kinda sorta be said about his rise iteration especially in the movie
The Rise version of Leo uses humor to cope too... I think he'd get along with your favorite Raph. Crossover fanfiction idea?
There's another thing about Raph that made him special. He's the only Turtle to have a love interest in different versions of the series and comics. In the 1987 series he had a girlfriend name Mona Lisa whose a mutant salamander. In the archie comics Raph's girlfriend was a fox name Ninjara. In the comics from IDW Raph's girlfriend is a mutant snowfox name Alopex. in the 2012 series from Nickelodeon his girlfriend was an alien salamandrian also name Mona Lisa. So Raph was the only turtle to ever have a girlfriend.
Not really michelgelo had experience with women in the comics. Horridus and Seri
Also 87 Mikey had a thing with the Nutrino girl from Dimension X. Both 2003 and 2012 Mikey had Renet (plus Shinagami for 2012 Mikey). Leo had Karai in both 2003 and 2012.
Don’t Donnie have thing going on with April in 2012 and Rise?
@@Darthzilla99 Leo also had a thing for Blossom in the 87 series too.

Raphael is my favorite Ninja Turtle.

Raphael was always my favourite character... Funnily enough Chandler Bing from friends reminds me of Raph
It’s honestly hard for me to choose my favourite and least favourite Ninja Turtle. There is something that I love about all of them.

Though I enjoyed Turtles Forever
I was Pissed with their Blatant Disrespect of the 80s Turtles and their Horrible Arrogance towards them and the 80s show!
This is actually my favorite Raphael
1980s audiences: Wow this is really violent.
2003 TNMT: Here, hold my beer.
😂True
3:14 Funny how Rise made a great action scene out of just fish and ladders
87 Raphael not only had wisecracks I loved, but his personality seemed the most pronounced to me. And I love how he and Donatello interact. ❤
Anyway I love all the Raphs in the cartoons!
Always thought this version Raphael was a comedian with sarcasm that's when I was a kid when I originally watched the show.
I just like that he’s not a total rage monster all the time like other incarnations
2012 was pretty good, because he wasn't just a total jerk at all times. He showed a lot of care for others, and trained a lot to make his anger a strength, rather than a weakness. I thought it was pretty cool
Rise Raph is my favorite, but 87 Raph is a close second.
@@superstarultra28 can you say Rise Raph is a meat head.
@@k-dogg9086 Nope, he's a calm, loving, and levelheaded leader. Sure, he has his goofy moments, but he still takes his position as leader seriously and I really admire that.
@@superstarultra28 In spite of that, deep down he is still a "Raph" and solves most adversities with his fists, I love him, but he isn't my fav Raph xD
I love Leo, Mikey and Donnie in Rise, tho.
Loved Raph in this show.
Same here
As someone with a tendency to snark and anger issues... yeah, it's not surprising Raphael was always my favorite turtle, no matter which version.
I like this Raphael simply because his personality stands out from the other turtles in the original series.
I always thought about Raphael as Knuckles the Ninja Turtle. Not sure how accurate that is though.
Knuckles is mikey and raph put together
There’s something so charming I find about these versions of the Turtles.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the only version I've watched start to finish and I love the Raph in that one. All the characters in that version are great, especially Donnie. Best adaptation for my money.
I recently started watching it, and by god: Literally all four of the brothers are absolute kings. Raph is a giant spikey teddy bear and I love him.
Raph has always been my favorite from any incarnation…except for Rise but we don’t speak about that. Yeah they tamed him for the 87 cartoon but definitely made up for it in the 1990 film
2012 Raphael is the best!!
I prefer this one cuz he's angry guy but not a stereotypical angry guy here had more to him and honestly I think this version is the funniest. But Leatherhead is best character "I guarantee"
I love Raph, I'd love to see you talk about each incarnation 8D
My favorite Raphael would be 1987, 1990, 2007, and 2018 Rise Raph.
In terms of the violence I loved the first season which they used their weapons and hated when they started throwing stuff at people l.
His portrayal in the 2003 game based on the 2003 series will always stand out to me as cool. :)
He more like me)
Sometimes can be a hothead, but most of all time he`s a chill and sarcastic person even if here less than his bros!
Yes, this Raphael's snarky, cynical, crude, sarcastic, avoident, and antisocial. His quirks, quips, burns, roasts, put downs, insults, and dry, bedpan humour was great. He was cheeky, a smartass, an asshole, a wise guy. His being a distant, blunt, tactless, to-the-point, attitude was a passive aggressive jerk, but was the best. I can relate to him. But he was social kind and lovable.. but only to a point. He never wore his feelings or heart on his sleeve. He was private, serious, reserved, but fun. He deeply cared for others, and really enjoyed his family and friends and their company, but he was introvert and a loner. And that's ok.
But, yet, there are times, esp. as of late, that I can also go "to the next level" and relate to the "I'm misunderstood, gloated at, mocked, used, unsatisfied, stagnant, unapproved, neglected, abandoned, unappealing, unappreciated, underrated, let down, frustrated, hurt, scared, and abused, so right now, I'm feeling really very confused, unsure, insecure, alone, undecided, and vulnerable, and so, Dammit, I'm Truly Very Pissed Off Here!!" aggressive assertive blunt in-your-face honest rude attitude we see from later characteristics of Raphael.
If I had to make improvements I would make him more susceptible to lashing out physically and also obviously to have good fighting scenes
Raphael was always my favorite but why is he the only turtle with the New York accent if they were all born and raised in New York?
I like how Hal Rayle sounds like Mike from Monsters Inc. and Michael Gough is almost identical to Jason Griffith
I too am a fan of the red turtle.
Cool! What about an episode on 2003 Donatello? I think he deservesa a video too.
You just need a program to connect to the East Canadian servers of TH-cam, and you will be able to download it!
Canada is the only place where the copyright thingie applied to the serie is not working yet.
Also, yes, Nickelodeon needs to freaking make a DVD collection...
@@charactersin-depth3472 that sticks I had 3 dvds of the 2003 show but left them behind when I moved!
What Is Your Favorite Raph 🐢❤️ Episode In The Original 80’s Cartoon Series
Raphael Meets His Match
Raphael Knocks ’Em Dead
Raphael Drives ’Em Wild
Raphael Vs The Volcano
Raphael Turtle Of Thousand Faces
This Raph Was Good I Mean Most In Other Icarnation He Is Knowns As The Hothead One And Sensitive
“If the peo0pe in the 80’s watched the 2003 and 2012 series, they would have heart attacks”
If they watched rise they’d be thrown across the earth, crash through a building and die
Also my favourite variant of Raph is… don’t hate me but…. The 2018 version, he loves his brothers, yet is so violent at the same time
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rocks...
My favorite character is Leonardo
Hey, mine too!
The best version of the best turtle
Micheal Go sounds like Sonic The Hedgehog, I imagine his voice as Sonic it will fit in perfectly.
Rob Paulsen Brought The Smart Wise Guy Sarcasstic And Breaking The Fourth Wall To Raph’s Character Raph And Mikey Had The Same Personality’s
Yeah, they weren't that different except that Mikey was more compulsive and worlds more fixated on pizza.
Oh, yes! I agree with you! Rob Paulsen really brought the wise guy out into it.
Yeah But Raph 🐢❤️ #Raph Had Some Tough Moments And Attitude Too In The Show Like When They First Meets Casey Jones In Park And They Fight When He Disappears Raph Says He Has Saying To Many Filthy Harry Movies
Since That What He Is Known For In Other Incarnations
Hotheaded Short Temper Strongest Tough Guy In The 1897 Raph Says Some Wise Quotes And Even Good Lines Even If He Can Be The Comedy Relief At Times And Rob Paulsen Really Accomplished That With The Character
When I first saw the 87 Ralpheal, he was one of my favorites cause he was like PETER VENKMAN N GHOSTBUSTERS & that the fact that they were both comedians like JIM CAREY, WILL SMITH & EDDIE MURPHY all together 😉
I love all the turtles but Raph is my favorite.
I'm so jealous that you watched it back in its heyday.
I'm a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to
3:36 According to Turtlepedia, 2003 series recieved negative reviews from the fans of the 80s series because It had less likeable characters and the theme song wasn't that hype at all.
I've been aware of that for a while. They were missing out.
There was a moment in the Red Skies series when he openly challenged Leonardo for leadership.
The 1990 Movie of Raphael BLEW MY MIND AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Especially when up untill that point all I have seen was the 87 cartoon..
But when that first moment when you first hear him speak with Master Splinter about loosing his weapon and then he punches Donatello... I'm like ok this is NOT A FILM FOR KIDS I AM SCARED OF HIM!! 😂😂😂
I feel so special right now
0:20 How I would like to have the DVD of the ninja turtles too
1987 Raphael In The Original Cartoon Wasn’t Angry But He Was Funny And Comdy Smart Ass Sarcastic Wise Guy Making Jokes And Breaking The Fourth Wall
Lame.
How would You rank each TMNT movie and cartoon? And why don't You make Your top list of Your favorite & despised TMNT characters?
Btw, I love Your content, dude. Keep up the good work! ;)
I love 1987 raph's voice to me this voice fits Raph best I don't know why i just think it does
My favorite Raphael is the 2012 one
I agree with you he was so relatable for me though 2003 is a close contender as well
Raphael reminds me of boom knuckles in the tv show.
Sarcasm is a form of anger
Love raph because he has the same personally as me
Which Raph the one that makes 4th wall jokes
Yeah I always thought Michelangelo was the Funny goofball, while Rafael was the, funny sarcastic, one
Man why do people gotta be fighting about which series is better in the comments of every single thing that has to do with TMNT like get over yourselves and keep your preferences in your brain if you're gonna argue about it
Someday, can you please talk about other versions of Raphael?
Being a party, dude, and being a scientist are also not valuable assets to being a ninja ninjas, or spies and assassins, and the four of them basically do none of that throughout their iterations except for the original. At least from what I’ve seen from the shows they don’t do a lot of spying or Intel gatherings they just kind of bumble around different adventures.
Raphael is my favvo. But When I was young and watching TMNT for first time 1987 shows. My favvo was Leonardo and he is close to beat Raphael for me. I started to like Raphael after first TMNT movie and Leonardo become my second favvo.
Wait till he finds Rise!Raph..
I guess I do like the 87 version just a little bit more because he is chill and nobody likes a person who’s always angry. It be cool if once in a while, he flew off the handle to show that he does have rage but I would like to see a more focused, angry Rafael, that I would just want her goes off the car for no reason
Rob Paulsen, that's what.
For me I consider Raph a lovable jerk in this series. I see this incarnation kinda similar to Peter in The Real Ghostbusters, in the sense they toned down the edgier aspects of the characters. I just enjoy most franchise and think 87 is kinda underrated.
OK so honestly I prefer 1987 Rafael over every other version Because two words Rob Paulsen
The greatest
Raph in the 2007 movie was so good
1987 Raphael, despite all the differences (not a fan of Raph being a conformist and part of the team.
I left Rise out since I don't think I've seen enough of it. Interesting that its versions of Leo and Raph still have their rivalry.
