  • God's Number is a concept that is fairly well known within the cubing community. But what about its sister, the Devil's Number? Is it possible for one single algorithm to solve any position?

    It would be very cool to have a devils algorithm for OLL and PLL, although it wouldn't be very useful.

    For puzzles with fewer permutations, like a floppy 3x3, a devils algorithm CAN be worked out. Not sure how hard it was to figure it out, but it’s 192.

    There's a program you can download somewhere called BOINC, which lets the program use your computer's processing power to process information for companies of your choice. Finding a solution for this would be a great thing to be able to choose from on this program, I sure hope it can become a reality.

    If you put the 3x3 hamiltonian circuit algorithm into a txt file which can be downloaded off the Internet it's megabytes large. Keep in mind it is just text files(yes multiple, some are just for sub-sub-sub-sub-sub algs) full of LAYERS of algs made up of other algs hundreds of moves long. It's insane, I downloaded it and I could barely understand I even though I knew what it was.

    Your Devils Algorithm for the 2x2x2 is incorrect. Applying R2 U2 F2 R2, then applying the said algorithm R2 U2 R2 U2 R2 B2 R2 will not resolve in a solved state at any given time within the algorithm.
    You can trivially see, that the algorithm must be wrong since you never touch the LFD corner.
    Apart from that I like the way you present the topic even though it's nothing new to me. You present it interestingly enough such that I watched the video to the end.

      My definition of what a devils algorithm actually is was wrong. On the sourced website (anttila.ca/michael/devilsalgorithm/), micheal states that they allow repetitions of the algorithm which cleared things up.
      And yes, my statement concerning the LFD corner are plain wrong. Knowing that for a 2x2x2 is the very same as makes this very clear. Thus, precisely as you state, the cube "becomes solved around LFD"

      @SeriousJester - You are right by what you are saying here. But by the nature of a 2x2 ,being that it has no centers, the orientation can be decided by choice. So to apply the algorithm you first place a piece that will be in accordance with your orientation into LFD and then apply the algorithm. This drastically shortens the possibilities and in another reason why 3x3 is extremely hard to do... even in half turns.

    It would be possible for small cuboids like the 1x2xN cuboids, and maybe even the 2x2xN cuboids including the shapeshifting ones if you don't do any shapeshifting moves. It would definitely be possible for the 2x2x3.

    I'm sorry to be the one to tell you, but for a devil's algorithm to exist, it would require a few things that the permutation group of the 3x3x3 rubik's cube doesn't have. It would have to be a cyclic group (can be generated by 1 element, the devil's algorithm being it). But non abelians groups (like the rubik's cube) can never be cyclic. Therefore, the devil's algorithm does not exist. Sorry, would be cool if it did.
