    So sorry to learn of Ahmad Jamal's passing. So grateful I got to see him play once at Blues Alley in DC about 30 years ago. He was one of a kind, will be missed. RIP.

    Got brought to see him at 18 or 19 years old by a friend who had an extra ticket at his table at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. We had literally the best table in the house and I (somewhat selfishly, in retrospect) snagged the best seat at the table, with a perfect view of Ahmad's hands. To say my mind was blown would be the understatement of the century. I have seen literally over 1,000 acts perform and I know for a fact that I will forever consider this to be one of the best concerts I ever saw.

    A Master Jazz Pianist!!! Period! Just watching those digits move! Once saw him play 'Live' in NYC, late 90's, following an interview he did on, "The Joey Reynolds Show," on WOR/NYC where I was a Producer at the time. Ahmad Jamal's wife was there with him. I cherish the CD 'gifted' to me at the time.

      Yes, if you love bass its better to be able to hear it! So many great bass players went their whole careers without anyone hearing what they were playing 90% of the time. Amazing that so few jazz bassists adopted electric when they became available in the 50's. Fender even made one called the Jazz, specifically without frets.

    Some very tasty fretless electric bass. I know the acoustic upright is the classic style but you can barely hear it most of the time. Electric fretless, handled properly, has a flowing, vocal quality to it. Snazzy drumming too. Top-notch rhythm section backing up the agile piano playing.

    • @danceswithbadgers
      @danceswithbadgers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not on the bass he's playing - there's not enough fretboard curve. It can be done on upright electrics though, which tend to have a fretboard curve more like a traditional double bass.

  • @christophercharles9645

    Is it me or does it seem like Ahmad is riding that drummer like crazy. Visual cues almost to distraction. But just for the drummer - not really for James Cammack. Weird. An amazing group though. I love James Cammack's fretless playing!

    • @rataMacue22
      @rataMacue22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I get the feeling Jamal "settled" for this drummer and isn't pleased. Great drummer, but not Jamal's typical flavor. He does favor the China cymbal a bit much .... a lot of folks don't like that. His tom angles and head choices tell me he's probably more of a rock or fusion drummer. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @BLUEPLANETJAZZ
      @BLUEPLANETJAZZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think he was riding him--just not used to playing with him--Bowler is great--very different from Jamal's other drummers but killed good--I am a sure Jamal appreciated him.

      I saw this band in London at jazz cafe and Ahmad was not pleased with the drummer , he would not play the cymbal where Ahmad wanted it and he was furious , and the place was a building site , James cammack is one of the very best though , i do prefer him on a real bass , top man !

    • @dfolegna
      @dfolegna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I didnt know this drummer, but played with jamal for many years and recorded 3 album, so I guess Jamal did not dislike him or he would have changed, considering his status. He sounds a modern drummer, less traditional jazz. But this kind of palette is similar to herlin riley before him and idris muhammad, after. I find him a very good one, maybe just a bit fresh and not enough rich in tone for jamal level, but he plays really well.

    • @JimDanis
